Abstract:Since its invention, optical frequency comb has revolutionized a broad range of subjects from metrology to spectroscopy. The recent development of microresonator-based frequency combs (microcombs) provides a unique pathway to create frequency comb systems on a chip. Indeed, microcomb-based spectroscopy, ranging, optical synthesizer, telecommunications and astronomical calibrations have been reported recently. Critical to many of the integrated comb systems is the broad coverage of comb spectra. Here, microcombs of more than two-octave span (450 nm to 2,008 nm) is demonstrated through χ (2) and χ (3) nonlinearities in a deformed silica microcavity. The deformation lifts the circular symmetry and creates chaotic tunneling channels that enable broadband collection of intracavity emission with a single waveguide. Our demonstration introduces a new degree of freedom, cavity deformation, to the microcomb studies, and our microcomb spectral range is useful for applications in optical clock, astronomical calibration and biological imaging.

Abstract:Microresonator frequency combs and their design versatility have revolutionized research areas from data communication to exoplanet searches. While microcombs in the 1550 nm band are well documented, there is interest in using microcombs in other bands. Here, we demonstrate the formation and spectral control of normal-dispersion dark soliton microcombs at 1064 nm. We generate 200 GHz repetition rate microcombs by inducing a photonic bandgap of the microresonator mode for the pump laser with a photonic crystal. We perform the experiments with normal-dispersion microresonators made from Ta2O5 and explore unique soliton pulse shapes and operating behaviors. By adjusting the resonator dispersion through its nanostructured geometry, we demonstrate control over the spectral bandwidth of these combs, and we employ numerical modeling to understand their existence range. Our results highlight how photonic design enables microcomb spectra tailoring across wide wavelength ranges, offering potential in bioimaging, spectroscopy, and photonic-atomic quantum technologies.

Abstract: Microcombs are revolutionizing optoelectronics by providing parallelized, mutually coherent wavelength channels for time-frequency metrology and information processing. To implement this essential function in integrated photonic systems, it is desirable to drive microcombs directly with an on-chip laser in a simple and flexible way. However, two major difficulties are preventing this goal: 1) generating mode-locked comb states usually requires a significant amount of pump power and 2) the requirement to align laser and resonator frequency significantly complicates operation and limits the tunability of the comb lines. Here, we address these problems by using microresonators on an AlGaAs on-insulator platform to generate dark-pulse microcombs. This highly nonlinear platform dramatically relaxes fabrication requirements and leads to a record-low pump power of less than 1 mW for coherent comb generation. Dark-pulse microcombs facilitated by thermally-controlled avoided mode-crossings are accessed by direct DFB laser pumping. Without any feedback or control circuitries, the comb shows good coherence and stability. This approach also leads to an unprecedented wide chirping range of all the comb lines. Our work provides a route to realize power-efficient, simple and reconfigurable microcombs that can be seamlessly integrated with a wide range of photonic systems.

Abstract:The emerging microresonator-based frequency combs revolutionize a broad range of applications from optical communications to astronomical calibration. Despite of their significant merits, low energy efficiency and the lack of all-optical dynamical control severely hinder the transfer of microcomb system to real-world applications. Here, by introducing active lasing medium into the soliton microcomb, for the first time, we experimentally achieve the chiral soliton with agile on-off switch and tunable dual-comb generation in a packaged microresonator. It is found that such a microresonator enables a soliton slingshot effect, the rapid soliton formation arising from the extra energy accumulation induced by inter-modal couplings. Moreover, tuning the erbium gain can generate versatile multi-soliton states, and extend the soliton operation window to a remarkable range over 18 GHz detuning. Finally, the gain-assisted chirality of counterpropagating soliton is demonstrated, which enables an unprecedented fast on-off switching of soliton microcombs. The non-trivial chiral soliton formation with active controllability inspires new paradigms of miniature optical frequency combs and brings the fast tunable soliton tools within reach.

Abstract:Micro-optical frequency combs are miniaturized coherent light sources exhibiting a tremendous influence on precision spectroscopy, optical clocks, and high-speed optical communications. The rare-earth-doped lithium niobate (LN) is a promising platform to integrate the lasers and comb sources on the same chip of single material. However, microcombs generated in rare-earth-doped LN thin film (LNTF) have not yet been fully explored. To explore the protocols of generating optical combs in ytterbium-doped LNTF, the comb-like laser is studied in the 1060 nm band, and the dissipative Kerr soliton is experimentally demonstrated in the telecom band in a Z-cut wafer. The over-coupled fundamental transverse electric mode with anomalous dispersion is excited at an on-chip pump power of 75.7 mW to generate the robust bright soliton. The broadband spectrum of the Kerr soliton ranges from 1480 to 1660 nm with 110 comb lines, whose repetition rate is 197.8 GHz. The mode-locking of the soliton can be achieved as a result of the photorefractive effect of ytterbium-doped LNTF instead of complex feedback schemes. Numerical simulations are highly accordant with the experimental results. This work expands the microcomb-generating platform and increases the potential for integrated on-chip applications including precision ranging and frequency division.

Abstract:Microcombs have exhibited outstanding potential in the fields of optical frequency synthesizer, atomic clock, lidar, etc. To achieve a fully stabilized optical frequency comb, the microcombs should simultaneously have a nearly octave spectrum for self-referenced locking and a relatively small comb line spacing so that the beating frequency can be located in a comfortable photodetection bandwidth, e.g., 10 GHz. Unfortunately, it is still challenging for microcombs based on integrated microresonators, mainly due to the limitation on waveguide loss and dispersion control. Moreover, it is also highly desired that the microcombs can be stabilized in a simple way rather than complicated control.

Abstract:Optical frequency combs based on mode-locked lasers have proven to be invaluable tools for a wide range of applications in precision spectroscopy and metrology. A novel principle of optical frequency comb generation in whispering-gallery mode microresonators ("microcombs") has been developed recently, which represents a promising route towards chip-level integration and out-of-the-lab use of these devices. Presently, two families of microcombs have been demonstrated: Combs with electronically detectable mode spacing that can be directly stabilized, and broadband combs with up to octave-spanning spectra but mode spacings beyond electronic detection limits. However, it has not yet been possible to achieve these two key requirements simultaneously, as will be critical for most microcomb applications. Here we present a route to overcome this problem by interleaving an electro-optic comb with the spectrum from a parametric microcomb. This allows, for the first time, direct control and stabilization of a microcomb spectrum with large mode spacing (>140 GHz) with no need for an additional mode-locked laser frequency comb. The attained residual 1-sec instability of the microcomb comb spacing is 10(-15), with a microwave reference limited absolute instability of 10(-12) at a 140 GHz mode spacing.

Abstract:In the past decade, optical frequency combs generated by high-Q micro-resonators, or micro-combs, which feature compact device footprints, high energy efficiency, and high-repetition-rates in broad optical bandwidths, have led to a revolution in a wide range of fields including metrology, mode-locked lasers, telecommunications, RF photonics, spectroscopy, sensing, and quantum optics. Among these, an application that has attracted great interest is the use of micro-combs for RF photonics, where they offer enhanced functionalities as well as reduced size and power consumption over other approaches. This article reviews the recent advances in this emerging field. We provide an overview of the main achievements that have been obtained to date, and highlight the strong potential of micro-combs for RF photonics applications. We also discuss some of the open challenges and limitations that need to be met for practical applications.

Efficient Generation of a Near-visible Frequency Comb via Cherenkov-like Radiation from a Kerr Microcomb

Abstract:Optical frequency combs enable state-of-the-art applications including frequency metrology, optical clocks, astronomical measurements, and sensing. Recent demonstrations of microresonator-based Kerr frequency combs or microcombs pave the way to scalable and stable comb sources on a photonic chip. Generating microcombs in the short-wavelength range, however, has been limited by large material dispersion and optical loss. Here we demonstrate a scheme for efficiently generating microcombs near the edge of the visible spectrum in a high-Q aluminum nitride microring resonator. The enhanced Pockels effect strongly couples infrared and near-visible modes into hybrid mode pairs, which participate in the Kerr microcomb generation process and lead to strong Cherenkov-like radiation in the near-visible band an octave apart. A surprisingly high on-chip conversion efficiency of 22% is achieved from a pulsed pump laser to the near-visible comb. As a result of pulse pumping, the generated microcombs are in the chaotic state. We further demonstrate a robust frequency tuning of the near-visible comb by more than one free spectral range and apply it to the absorption spectroscopy of a water-based dye molecule solution. Our work is a step towards high-efficiency visible microcomb generation and its utilization, and it also provides insights into the significance of the Pockels effect and its strong coupling with Kerr nonlinearity in a single microcavity device.

Abstract:Remarkable progress has been made on microresonator-based optical frequency combs (microcombs) in recent years, leading to widespread applications including optical communication and bioimaging. However, due to the significant normal material group-velocity dispersion (GVD) in the visible wavelength range, investigations of microcombs are primarily limited to the infrared and mid-infrared wavelength bands. In this study, we demonstrate the generation of broadband microcombs spanning ∼130 nm in the visible wavelength range, by leveraging the geometric dispersion of high-order modes confined within the thin wall of a microbubble resonator (MBR). Furthermore, we utilize the dispersive wave emission generated by the high-order dispersion to efficiently extend the comb span. Our study highlights the potential of MBRs with precisely controlled wall thickness as an additional degree of freedom for engineering GVD and extending nonlinear photonic applications into the visible and near-visible spectral range.

Abstract:Soliton microcombs have shown great potential in a variety of applications ranging from chip scale frequency metrology to optical communications and photonic data center, in which light coupling among cavity transverse modes, termed as intermode interactions, are long-existing and usually give rise to localized impacts on the soliton state. Of particular interest are whispering gallery mode based crystalline resonators, which with dense mode families, potentially feature interactions of all kind. While effects of narrow-band interactions such as spectral power spikes have been well recognized in crystalline resonators, that of broadband interactions remains unexplored. Abstract:Microcombs -- optical frequency combs generated in coherently-driven nonlinear microresonators -- have attracted significant attention over the last decade. The ability to generate two such combs in a single resonator device has in particular enabled a host of applications from spectroscopy to imaging. Concurrently, novel comb generation techniques such as synchronous pulsed driving have been developed to enhance the efficiency and flexibility of microcomb generation. Here we report on the first experimental demonstration of dual-microcomb generation via synchronous pulsed pumping of a single microresonator. Specifically, we use two electro-optically generated pulse trains derived from a common continuous wave laser to simultaneously drive two orthogonal polarization modes of an integrated silica ring resonator, observing the generation of coherent dissipative Kerr cavity soliton combs on both polarization axes. Thanks to the resonator birefringence, the two soliton combs are associated with different repetition rates, thus realizing a dual-microcomb source. To illustrate the source's application potential, we demonstrate proof-of-concept spectroscopic measurements.

Recently, various microcomb-based microwave photonic systems have been reported such as high-spectral-purity microwave generation, microwave photonic signal processing, true-time-delay beamforming, etc. Outstanding performances including low phase noise, high reconfigurability, and large Nyquist bandwidth have been demonstrated, showing a bright future of microcomb-based microwave photonics.

Abstract:Optical microcombs represent a new paradigm for generating laser frequency combs based on compact chip-scale devices, which have underpinned many modern technological advances for both fundamental science and industrial applications. Along with the surge in activity related to optical micro-combs in the past decade, their applications have also experienced rapid progress, not only in traditional fields such as frequency synthesis, signal processing, and optical communications, but also in new interdisciplinary fields spanning the frontiers of light detection and ranging (LiDAR), astronomical detection, neuromorphic computing, and quantum optics. This paper reviews the applications of optical microcombs. First, an overview of the devices and methods for generating optical microcombs is provided, which are categorized into material platforms, device architectures, soliton classes, and driving mechanisms. Second, the broad applications of optical microcombs are systematically reviewed, which are categorized into microwave photonics, optical communications, precision measurements, neuromorphic computing, and quantum optics. Finally, the current challenges and future perspectives are discussed.

Abstract:Optical frequency comb (OFC) has coherently bridged the gap between light and microwave. Its advent has brought revolutionary progress to the accurate measurements of optical frequency and time, and profoundly promoted the technological development of technology of the contemporary world. The earliest optical frequency combs are generated from mode-locked laser systems. However, optical frequency combs based on mode-locked lasers have typically been limited to laboratory applications, due to their complexity, large size, and high cost. In recent years, a new type of optical frequency comb has emerged to address these problems. It is excited by continuous-wave laser coupling into a high-quality optical microresonator, generating equidistant sidebands in the frequency domain through four-wave mixing, and achieving mode locking in the time domain by using nonlinear effects to balance dispersion. This novel optical frequency comb is named "microcombs". Compared with traditional optical frequency combs, microcombs offer advantages such as compact size, integrability, low power consumption, and a wide repetition frequency range. Their occurrence marks the era of the generation of optical frequency combs towards chip-scale size and has aroused increasing attention from the scientific and industrial communities. This paper is ended by summarizing the current challenges faced by microcombs and giving a prospective outlook on their future development.

The proposed scheme shows for the first time a reliable design strategy for normal‐dispersion microcombs and may make it possible to generate microcombs in an extended wavelength range (e.g. in the visible) where normal material dispersion is likely to dominate. Microcomb generation, repetition rate selection, and mode locking are achieved with coupled silicon nitride microrings constructed from single‐mode waveguides. Abstract:Optical frequency combs have revolutionized spectral measurement technologies, such as dual-comb spectrometers, for fast and accurate spectroscopic measurements over broad spectral ranges. Moreover, chip-scale frequency combs based on microresonators are revolutionizing laser spectroscopy due to their compact size, low cost, and low power consumption, which offer a promising solution for integrated optical sensing applications by replacing costly bulk optical sensing components. Developing new attractive photonic materials for integrated microcomb is critical to realizing chip-based microcombs with high efficiency, broad bandwidth, and low pumping power. In this tutorial, we present novel chalcogenide chip-based microcombs for broadband laser spectroscopy. The integrated chalcogenide microresonators on silicon wafers are achieved using a home-developed chalcogenide glass (Ge25Sb10S65) with ultra-wide transmittance window, high Kerr nonlinearity, and low thermo-optic coefficient. Two fabrication processes of high quality-factor integrated chalcogenide microresonators with different core-cladding structures operating in the telecom and mid-infrared (MIR) regions, respectively, are introduced. Combined high nonlinearity with lithographically controlled flexible dispersion engineering of the chalcogenide microresonators, we have realized the versatile Kerr microcombs generation and physical mechanism, including bright soliton microcomb, dark-pulse microcomb, Raman-Kerr microcomb, broadband Kerr microcomb and the future opportunity of the MIR Kerr comb. In addition, we review the most potent examples of dual-comb spectroscopy applications for molecular characterization and laser ranging with ultra-high sensitivity and high accuracy and discuss the challenges of realizing MIR microcombs with high performance and ultracompact footprint for laser spectroscopy.
Microcomb-based Transversal Microwave Photonic Applications

Abstract:Kerr optical frequency combs, or "microcombs", originated from the optical parametric oscillation in monolithic micro-ring resonators (MRRs), offer distinct advantages over traditional multi-wavelength sources for RF applications, such as the potential to provide a much higher number of wavelengths, an ultra-large FSR, as well as greatly reduced footprint and complexity. In particular, for RF transversal functions, the number of wavelengths dictates the available channel number of parallel time delays, and thus with microcombs, the performance of RF transversal systems can be enhanced in terms of the spectral resolution and quality factor, respectively.

Abstract:chi((2))-translated microcomb generation in microresonators that possess both chi((2)) and chi((3)) nonlinear responses opens the door for ultra-broadband integrated comb sources. The interplay between the second- and third-order nonlinearities within a fixed coupling coefficient fertilizes complicated cavity dynamics which is of paramount scientific and technological potential. However, this coupling coefficient can be drastically wavelength-dependent, which is lack of consideration in previous studies. Here, we extend the range of coupling strengths to a full description and propose a new approach to delineate the spectral response of the interactions between the chi((2)) and chi((3)) nonlinearities. Critically, the underpinned physics is enabled by avoided mode crossing (AMX) in concentric double-ring microresonators. We demonstrate that the evolution of the anti-symmetric mode at fundamental wavelengths disrupts spectral symmetry, leading to asymmetric chi((2))-translated optical frequency combs at second-harmonic wavelengths. Simultaneous generation of skewed two-color optical frequency combs is numerically realized in an exemplary gallium phosphide-on-insulator platform with a coupling constant from 133.3 m(-1)W(-1/2) to 7.4 m(-1)W(-1/2), showing reasonable agreement with our theoretical model. Our findings provide a novel approach to shaping the optical frequency comb, which may facilitate potential applications in self-referencing and frequency metrology with desired comb spectral shapes.

Abstract:AbstractThe advancement of microcomb sources, which serve as a versatile and powerful platform for various time–frequency measurements, have spurred widespread interest across disciplines. Their uses span coherent optical and microwave communications, atomic clocks, high-precision LiDARs, spectrometers, and frequency synthesizers. Recent breakthroughs in fabricating optical micro-cavities, along with the excitation and control of microcombs, have broadened their applications, bridging the gap between physical exploration and practical engineering systems. These developments pave the way for pioneering approaches in both classical and quantum information sciences. In this review article, we conduct a thorough examination of the latest strategies related to microcombs, their enhancement and functionalization schemes, and cutting-edge applications that cover signal generation, data transmission, quantum analysis, and information gathering, processing and computation. Additionally, we provide in-depth evaluations of microcomb-based methodologies tailored for a variety of applications. To conclude, we consider the current state of research and suggest a prospective roadmap that could transition microcomb technology from laboratory settings to broader real-world applications.
