Abstract:If existing, neutrinoless double beta decay (0νββ) is a rare process implying leptonnumber violation, identifying neutrinos as Majorana fermions and establishing an absolute scale for neutrino mass. To make a discovery (if the neutrino mass is inverted or if the mass of the lightest neutrino is larger than 50 meV) it is necessary to measure the energy of the two emitted electrons of 0νββ decay using at least one tonne of a candidate isotope. Challenges for such experiments are very good energy resolution, very low background and scalability to one tonne. The first priority of the PandaX-III Collaboration at the China Jinping Underground Lab is to construct a 200 kg enriched Xe TPC with dimensions 1.4 m diameter and 1.9 m length working at 10 bar pressure. The energy resolution is expected to be better than 3% FWHM with Microbulk Micromegas readout and the background level about 10 count/(keV·kg·yr) before a significant reduction by topological cuts, which use the read-out information. The first module is expected to be constructed and installed underground by 2017, and once the first module is successful, the goal is to build one additional 200 kg TPC every year with year-by-year improvement based on continuous R&D in order to reach the tonne-scale in 2022. The Irfu wants to participate to 0νββ decay search with low background detectors and to contribute with R&D on Micromegas detectors and on the associated electronics Readout.
