Abstract:With the rapid development of online social networks (OSNs), a huge amount of user generated online content is gradually affecting people's lives. Popularity prediction of online content aims to predict the popularity in the future based on its early diffusion status. Existing models for popularity prediction are mostly based on discovering network features or fitting the equation into a varying time function which seldom make full use of the law of sociology. The main contribution of this article is to solve the problem that the accuracy of current popularity prediction model is not high enough and few or no work based on sociology. In this paper, we find that there exists a high linear correlation between the proportion of faithful fans in Facebook homepage with frequent shares in the early and the future popularity. The statistical results about Facebook remind us that the weak ties theory plays an important role in prediction task. Furthermore, an experimental study clearly illustrates that the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:Predicting the popularity of content is important for both the host and users of social media sites. The challenge of this problem comes from the inequality of the popularity of con- tent. Existing methods for popularity prediction are mainly based on the quality of content, the interface of social media site to highlight contents, and the collective behavior of user- s. However, little attention is paid to the structural charac- teristics of the networks spanned by early adopters, i.e., the users who view or forward the content in the early stage of content dissemination. In this paper, taking the Sina Weibo as a case, we empirically study whether structural character- istics can provide clues for the popularity of short messages. We find that the popularity of content is well reflected by the structural diversity of the early adopters. Experimental results demonstrate that the prediction accuracy is signif- icantly improved by incorporating the factor of structural diversity into existing methods.

Abstract:With the rapid development of network. The multimedia information spreads faster since the rise of social network where people can create and share images, video and audio contents. Online content captures online behavior of users who communicate or interact on a diversity of issues and topics. How to predict the popularity of the online content happened recently is a hot topic and lots of researchers are trying to find out the law of information diffusion hidden in it. However, many models missed to make full use of the principles of social science. The main contribution of this article is to solve the problem that there are few popularity prediction work based on principles of sociology. We propose a model based on weak tie theory with a linear regression approach on Facebook. Our goal is to accurately estimate the popularity of a given viral topic at final based on the observation of its historical characteristics. Also, this method provides a better performance in the popularity prediction according to an empirical study.

Abstract:How to predict the future popularity of a message or video on online social media (OSM) has long been an attractive problem for researchers. Although many difficulties are still ahead, recent studies suggest that temporal and topological features of early adopters generally play a very important role. However, with the increase of the adopters, the feature space will grow explosively. How to select the most effective features is still an open issue. In this work, we investigate several feature extraction methods over the Twitter platform and find that most predictive power concentrates on the second half of the propagation period, and that not only a model trained on one platform generalizes well to others as previous works observed, but also a model trained on one dataset performs well on predicting the popularity for other datasets with different number of observed early adopters. According to these findings, at least for the best features by far, the data used to extract features can be halved without loss of evident accuracy and we provide a way to roughly predict the growth trend of a social-media item in real-time.

Abstract:Micro-blogging is one of the most popular social media services on which users can publish new messages (usually called tweets), submit their comments and retweet their followees' messages. It is retweeting behavior that leading the information diffusion in a faster way. However, why some tweets are more popular than others? Whether a message will be popular in the future? These problems have attracted great attention. In this paper, we focus on predicting the popularity of a tweet on Weibo, a famous micro-blogging service in China. It is important for tremendous tasks such as breaking news detection, personalized message recommendation, advertisement placement, viral marketing etc. We propose a novel approach to predict the retweet count of a tweet by finding top-k similar tweets published by the same author. To find the top-k similar tweets we consider both content similarity and temporal similarity. Meanwhile, we also integrate our method into a classical classification method and prove our method can improve the results significantly.

Abstract:In this paper, we study on the popularity prediction of online user-generated contents, where high quality predictions give us much more flexibility and preparing time in deploying limited resources (such as advertising budget, monitoring capacity) into more popular contents. However the high retrieval cost of data used in prediction is a big challenge due to the large amount of users and contents involved. We propose a notion that higher popularity user-generated contents can be predicted by concentrating on fewer but informative users, as we notice the fact that contents generated by those users tend to become popular while that which are generated by the rest users do not. We develop a cost-effective popularity prediction framework to fulfil online prediction. It contains 3 modules: (a) online data retrieving, (b) informative users selection and (c) popularity prediction. A hybrid user selection algorithm and several popularity prediction algorithms/improvements are presented, and their performance are evaluated and compared using (a) the selected users' generated data and (b) all users' generated data, retrieved from Sina Weibo Micro blogger. The best prediction algorithm reaches a 78% accuracy at the time of 24 hours after publishing time when level width Nl equals 500. And the best combination of prediction and selection algorithms performs only about 7% worse on dataset of 2000 users than on dataset of all users (about 4.46 million).

Abstract:Content popularity prediction plays an important role on proactive content caching. Different to most of the existing works which focus on improving the popularity prediction accuracy, in this article, we consider the content caching oriented popularity prediction through a weighted clustering approach in order to improve the caching performance. We formulate the loss of the cache hit ratio as the system regret to indicate the caching performance, and construct a clustering-based popularity prediction framework for overcoming the user request sparsity with considering the similarity of popularity evolution trends. For depicting the explicit relationship between the caching performance and the popularity prediction accuracy, we derive the popularity prediction error distribution of each content, and design the caching threshold. By extracting the insights in the relationship between the popularity prediction accuracy and the user clustering strategy, we develop a weighted clustering-based popularity prediction algorithm, which takes the caching regret probability of files as the weights. Based on two real-world datasets, the simulation results demonstrate that the proposed popularity prediction scheme achieves better caching performance than the state-of-the-art schemes.

Abstract:Predicting the popularity of online content on social network can bring considerable economic benefits to companies and marketers, and it has wide application in viral marketing, content recommendation, early warning of social unrest, etc. The diffusion process of online contents is often a complex combination of both social influence and homophily; however, existing works either only consider the social influence or homophily of early infected users and fail to model the joint effect of social influence and homophily when predicting future popularity. In this study, we aim to develop a framework to unify the social influence and homophily in popularity prediction. We use an unsupervised graph neural network framework to model nondirectional social homophily and integrate the attention mechanism with the graph neural network framework to learn the directional and heterogeneous social relationship for generating social influence representation. On the other hand, existing research studies often overlook the social group characteristics of early infected users, and we try to divide users into different social groups based on user interest and learn the social group representation from clusters. We integrate the social influence, homophily, and social group representation of early infected users to make popularity predictions. Experiments on real datasets show that the proposed method significantly improves the prediction accuracy compared with the latest methods, which confirms the importance of joint model social influence and homophily and shows that social group characteristic is an important predictor in the popularity prediction task.

Abstract:The boom of information technology enables social platforms (like Twitter) to disseminate social content (like news) in an unprecedented rate, which makes early-stage prediction for social content popularity of great practical significance. However, most existing studies assume a long-term observation before prediction and suffer from limited precision for earlystage prediction due to insufficient observation. In this paper, we take a fresh perspective, and propose a novel early pattern aware Bayesian model. The early pattern representation, which stands for early time series normalized on future popularity, can address what we call early-stage indistinctiveness challenge. Then we use an expressive evolving function to fit the time series and estimate three interpretable coefficients characterizing temporal effect of observed series on future evolution. Furthermore, Bayesian network is leveraged to model the probabilistic relations among features, early indicators and early patterns. Experiments on three real-world social platforms (Twitter, Weibo and WeChat) show that under different evaluation metrics, our model outperforms other methods in early-stage prediction and possesses low sensitivity to observation time.

Abstract:Popularity prediction is to predict the number of social network users involved in information diffusion. Recently, deep learning methods have become mainstream explorations for popularity prediction. However, most existing research is limited to making popularity predictions from temporal and spatial (user interaction) data. In addition to temporal and spatial data, there are also widespread types of data such as text (such as information content posted by users and user profiles), geographical location (such as user residence), discrete tags (such as user authentication) in social networks, and these types of rich data have not been fully used. To this end, we propose a novel framework, called Rich Information heterogeneous graph-based popularity Predictor (RIP). RIP refines the granularity of information diffusion across users on Weibo and constructs a rich information Weibo forwarding heterogeneous graph containing multiple types of data. Our experimental results on real-world Weibo datasets including Wb-SSC and Wb-MSC demonstrate significant gains for RIP over state-of-the-art information diffusion prediction models.
Analysis and Prediction of Content Popularity for Online Video Service:A Youku Case Study

Abstract:Understanding the characteristics and predicting the popularity of the newly published online videos can provide direct implications in various contexts such as service design, advertisement planning, network management and etc. In this paper, we collect a real-world large-scale dataset from a leading online video service provider in China, namely Youku. We first analyze the dynamics of content publication and content popularity for the online video service. Then, we propose a rich set of features and exploit various effective classification methods to estimate the future popularity level of an individual video in various scenarios. We show that the future popularity level of a video can be predicted even before the video's release, and by introducing the historical popularity information the prediction performance can be improved dramatically. In addition, we investigate the importance of each feature group and each feature in the popularity prediction, and further reveal the factors that may impact the video popularity. We also discuss how the early monitoring period influences the popularity level prediction. Our work provides an insight into the popularity of the newly published online videos, and demonstrates promising practical applications for content publishers, service providers, online advisers and network operators.

Abstract:Popularity prediction is important for many applications such as service design, network management and so on. Among several factors affecting popularity, content plays a key role, especially when we lack the time sequence data of historical consumption. However, exploring the influence of content-factors on popularity is not easy because of the increasing heterogeneous modalities and their sophisticated inner interplay. In this paper, we utilize several modes to predict popularity. In the meanwhile, considering that it is difficult and little significant to predict the exact number of popularity, we aim to rank pairs of content which is called relative popularity prediction. We cast the relative popularity prediction problem as a classification task and propose an end-to-end multi-modality model with the help of deep neural network. This model combines visual and textual information, maps them to a common feature space and implicitly constructs the interaction between them. Experimental result on real-world data has demonstrated the effectiveness of our model.

Abstract:Interaction behaviors of users on different platforms on the Internet make user-generated content spread widely and become popular. How to model and predict the popularity of topic concerned by users is vital for many fields. Aiming at the problem of topic popularity prediction on microblog platform, a popularity prediction method based on similar topics and co-occurrence topics is proposed. The method is further evaluated with the Sina Weibo dataset. The experimental results show that our method can have relatively better performance in predicting topic popularity than the baseline methods.

Abstract:Predicting popularity of online contents is of remarkable practical value in various business and administrative applications. Existing studies mainly focus on finding the most effective features for prediction. However, some effective features, such as structural features which are extracted from the underlying user network, are hard to access. In this paper, we aim to identify features that are both effective and effortless (easy to obtain or compute). Experiments on Sina Weibo show the effectiveness and effortlessness of the temporal features and satisfying prediction performance can be obtained based on only the temporal features of first 10 retweets.

Abstract:The rapid development of online social networks leads to an explosion of information,however,there are great differences in the popularity of different messages,and accurate prediction is always a great difficulty is the current study.Popularity prediction of online content aims to predict the popularity in the future based on its early diffusion status.Existing models for popularity prediction were mostly based on discovering network features or fitting the equation into a varying time function that the accuracy of current popularity prediction model was not high enough.Therefore,with the help of the weak ties theory in sociology,the concept of tie strength was introduced and a multilinear regression equation was constructed combined with the early popularity.A TSL model to predict the popularity of Facebook’s well-known pages was proposed.The main contribution of this article was to solve the problem and few or no work based on sociology.A high linear correlation between the proportion of faithful fans was existed in Facebook homepage with frequent shares in the early and the future popularity.Compared with other baseline models,an experimental study of Facebook (including 1.54 million shares) illustrates the effectiveness of the proposed TSL model,and the performance is better than the existing similar methods.

Abstract:ABSTRACTPopularity prediction, with both technological and economic importance, has been extensively studied for conventional video sharing sites (VSSes), where the videos are mainly found via searching, browsing, or related links. Recent statistics however suggest that online social network (OSN) users regularly share video contents from VSSes, which has contributed to a significant portion of the accesses; yet the popularity prediction in this new context remains largely unexplored. In this paper, we present an initial study on the popularity prediction of videos propagated in OSNs along friendship links. We conduct a large-scale measurement and analysis of viewing patterns of videos shared in one of largest OSNs in China, and examine the performance of typical views-based prediction models. We find that they are generally ineffective, if not totally fail, especially when predicting the early peaks and later bursts of accesses, which are common during video propagations in OSNs. To overcome these limits, we track the propagation process of videos shared in a Facebook-like OSN in China, and analyze the user viewing and sharing behaviors. We accordingly develop a novel propagation-based video popularity prediction solution, namely SoVP. Instead of relying solely on the early views for prediction, SoVP considers both the intrinsic attractiveness of a video and the influence from the underlying propagation structure. The effectiveness of SoVP, particularly for predicting the peaks and bursts, have been validated through our trace-driven experiments.

Abstract:This paper presents a systematic online prediction method (Social-Forecast) that is capable to accurately forecast the popularity of videos promoted by social media. Social-Forecast explicitly considers the dynamically changing and evolving propagation patterns of videos in social media when making popularity forecasts, thereby being situation and context aware. Social-Forecast aims to maximize the forecast reward, which is defined as a tradeoff between the popularity prediction accuracy and the timeliness with which a prediction is issued. The forecasting is performed online and requires no training phase or a priori knowledge. We analytically bound the prediction performance loss of Social-Forecast as compared to that obtained by an omniscient oracle and prove that the bound is sublinear in the number of video arrivals, thereby guaranteeing its short-term performance as well as its asymptotic convergence to the optimal performance. In addition, we conduct extensive experiments using real-world data traces collected from the videos shared in RenRen, one of the largest online social networks in China. These experiments show that our proposed method outperforms existing view-based approaches for popularity prediction (which are not context-aware) by more than 30% in terms of prediction rewards.

Abstract:Predicting the future popularity of online content is highly important in many applications. Consequently, new items which can be popular (potential ones), are suppressed by the already popular items. This paper proposes a novel model which is able to identify potential items. It identifies the potentially popular items by considering the number of links or ratings it has recieved in recent past along with it's popularity decay. For obtaining an effecient model we consider only temporal features of the content, avoiding the cost of extracting other features. We have found that people follow recent behaviours of their peers. In presence of fit or quality items already popular items lose it's popularity. Prediction accuracy is measured on three industrial datasets namely Movielens, Netflix and Facebook wall post. Experimental results show that compare to state-of-the-art model our model have better prediction accuracy.

Abstract:The randomness, dynamism and uncertainty of social networks pose a challenge for revealing the mechanism of content popularity growth. Evolution of content popularity is characterized by strong heterogeneity. It is difficult for a single time series prediction model to capture all kinds of content popularity dynamic evolution patterns at the same time. Using single model to predict complex social network content popularity will lead to poor prediction ability and limited application scenarios. This paper attempts to establish a combined predicting model that integrates the predicting capabilities of multiple traditional time series models. By applying multi-class regression and analyzing the historical prediction performance of each sub-model, the combined weights of the predicted values of each sub-model are generated. The model can learn to adjust the combination weights according to the real-time prediction performance of each sub-model, so as to adapt to the dynamic changes of the evolution model and to enhance the performance of predicting content popularity. The evaluation results of real social network datasets show that the performance of the proposed model is better than that of the existing single models.

Abstract:Web based social services like Twitter and Weibo are popular nowadays. A large number of users generate massive text-based information continuously and as a result, many topic popularity prediction models arise. However, most of them simply use forwarding or view count to measure popularity, ignoring semantic relations between posts and the topic. Moreover, few model use the important component of opinion - sentiment, to enhance topic popularity prediction. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a attention-based convolutional network model to generate sentiment-aware time series and predict topic popularity. Our model quantifies popularity more accurately with posts' semantic information and incorporates sentiment into popularity prediction. Concretely, our model is composed of a semantic-aware popularity quantification metric, a sentiment intensity detection neural network, and an Autoregressive convolutional network prediction scheme. We have conducted extensive experiments to prove that our model outperforms the existing popularity prediction models on a real-world Twitter dataset. We find that sentiment time series have the ability to improve popularity prediction accuracy significantly. Furthermore, we find our prediction scheme is superior to other models in utilizing sentiment information.
