Abstract:A local configuration interaction single (LCIS) excitations approach is implemented and applied to investigate the electronic excited states of extended conjugated polyenes up to 400 carbons within the semi-empirical Pariser–Parr–Pople (PPP) model. Numerical results show that the LCIS approach can reproduce well the canonical CIS results with much less computational costs. The dimension of the Hamiltonian matrix scales linearly in LCIS approach, comparing to quadratic scaling with canonical orbitals. Calculations for the lowest singlet excitation energy and the singlet–triplet splittings up to system with 400 carbons are demonstrated to saturate at about 100 carbons for polyene chain.

Abstract:A local contracted single and double configuration interaction (LC-CISD) method, which introduces contracted singly and doubly excited vectors within the framework of bond functions, has been recently proposed [P. Reinhardt et al., J. Chem. Phys. 129, 164106 (2008)]. The present work improves this method by introducing a coupled-electron pair approximation (CEPA-3) dressing and by incorporating the leading part of linked effects of triples (T) and quadruples (Q) through a series of local four-electron full CI calculations. Two different ways have been adopted to incorporate this linked TQ effect. One consists of dressing the first column/line of the whole LC-CISD matrix. The other one introduces an additional contracted wave function responsible for the linked effect for each bond pair. The present LC-CEPA-3+TQ treatments have been applied to the evaluation of equilibrium bond lengths and harmonic frequencies of diatomic molecules (HF, BF, CuH, N2, F2, and Cl2) and single bond breaking in HF, CH4, ClCH3, ClSiH3, n-butane, and F2 molecules, symmetrical stretching of the two OH bonds in a water molecule, and symmetrical expansion of a triangular Be3 cluster. The results show that the performance of the LC-CEPA-3+TQs compares favorably with coupled-cluster singles and doubles (CCSD) and CCSD(T) methods, presenting similar behaviors around equilibrium and better ones for stretched geometries. The LC-CEPA-3 method is strictly separable, and the size consistency error of our treatment of triples and quadruples is extremely small. The strict separability can be further achieved by dressing the doubly excited bond functions with the linked TQ effect. The efficiency of truncations on the bielectronic integrals has also been tested.

Abstract:Electron correlation effect in conjugated polymer is a long-standing problem, especially for the nonlinear optical properties. We have implemented a spin-adapted Coupled Cluster with singles and doubles excitation with local molecular orbital approach. As a first application, we evaluate the static polarizability of conjugated polyene chains with finite field approach. It is found that the local molecular orbital approach can tremendously reduce the computational costs at sufficiently high accuracy. It is also found that the electron correlation can largely reduce the molecular polarizability with respect to the Hartree-Fock mean field results. (C) 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:Most of the dynamic optimal control problems in chemical engineering can be written in the form of differential algebraic equations(DAEs).Simultaneous approach is an important method for solving these problems.The discretization strategies often used in this approach are local methods,for instance, orthogonal collocation on finite elements(OCFE),which has many advantages.Pseudo-spectral(PS),as a global method,has its own unique properties.It may offer a rapid convergence rate for the approximation of analytic functions and has high precision and low computational effort with a simple structure.As the representations of local method and global method respectively,OCFE and PS were compared.The collocation points and their different distributions were presented,and the degree of freedom(DOF) of non-linear programming(NLP) after discretization was discussed,as well as the criteria were offered to ensure the DOF of the NLPs.At last,a continuous case and a discontinuous case were studied,and it was concluded that if the problem was smooth enough then the convergence of PS was better than that of OCFE.

Abstract:An efficient implementation of the local excitation approximation (LEA) of time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) or time-dependent Hartree-Fock, (TDHF) (or configuration interaction singles, CIS) method has been developed in this work. The LEA-TDDFT, -TDHF, and -CIS methods have been applied to investigate the solvatochromic shift of the n → π* vertical excitation energy of acetone in aqueous solution. The main idea of the LEA scheme is that only local electron excitations within a certain active region (called as chromophore) are treated to obtain the excitation energies for locally excited electronic states. We have proposed an efficient localization procedure to obtain regional localized molecular orbitals (RLMOs) localized on the chromophore subunit. To ensure the accuracy of the TDDFT, TDHF, and CIS schemes for the studied system, we choose one acetone and six nearest-neighboring waters as the active region for each acetone-water cluster. For acetone in aqueous solution, the LEA-TDDFT calculations on 600 acetone-water configurations (generated from molecular dynamics simulation) suggest that the blueshift in the n → π* vertical electronic excitation energy is 1621 ± 52 cm(-1), which is in good agreement with the available experimental blue shift of 1500-1700 cm(-1).

Abstract:We present a novel theoretical scheme for orbital optimization in configuration interaction singles (CIS) based on a perturbative treatment of its electronic Hessian, whose analytical derivation is also established in this work. The proposed method, which can be interpreted as a "CIS-then-CIS" scheme, variationally accounts for orbital relaxation in excited states, thus significantly reducing the overestimation of charge-transfer excitation energies commonly associated with standard CIS. Additionally, by incorporating de-excitation effects from CIS, we demonstrate that our approach effectively describes single bond dissociation. Notably, all these improvements are achieved at a mean-field cost, with the pre-factor further reduced with the efficient algorithm introduced here, while preserving the size-intensive property of CIS.

Abstract:A multireference configurational interaction method based on the separated electron pair (SEP) wave functions, SEP‐CI approach, has been developed as an approximation to the traditional CASSCF method. It differs from the CASSCF method in that active orbitals are obtained from the SEP wave function without further optimization in the subsequent CI calculations, and the active space is automatically constructed according to the occupation coefficients of SEP natural orbitals. These features make the present SEP‐CI method computationally much less demanding than the CASSCF method. Abstract:As one kind of approximation of the full configuration interaction solution, the selected configuration interaction (sCI) methods have been shown to be valuable for large active spaces. However, the inclusion of dynamic correlation beyond large active spaces is necessary for more quantitative results. Since the sCI wave function can provide a compact reference for multireference methods, previously, we proposed an externally contracted multireference configuration interaction method using the sCI reference reconstructed from the density matrix renormalization group wave function [J. Chem. Theory Comput. 2018, 14, 4747-4755]. The DMRG2sCI-EC-MRCI method is promising for dealing with more than 30 active orbitals and large basis sets. However, it suffers from two drawbacks: spin contamination and low efficiency when using Slater determinant bases. To solve these problems, in this work, we adopt configuration state function bases and introduce a new algorithm based on the hybrid of tree structure for convenient configuration space management and the graphical unitary group approach for efficient matrix element calculation. The test calculation of naphthalene shows that the spin-adapted version could achieve a speed-up of 6.0 compared with the previous version based on the Slater determinant. Examples of dinuclear copper(II) compound as well as Ln(III) and An(III) complexes show that the sCI-EC-MRCI can give quantitatively accurate results by including dynamic correlation over sCI for systems with large active spaces and basis sets.
Selected non-orthogonal configuration interaction with compressed single and double excitations

Non-orthogonal configuration interaction (NOCI) is a versatile tool for treating static correlation, offering chemical insights by combining diverse reference states. Nevertheless, achieving quantitative accuracy requires the inclusion of missing dynamic correlation. This work introduces a framework for compressing orthogonal single and double excitations into an NOCI of a much smaller dimension. This compression is repeated with each Slater determinant in a reference NOCI, resulting in another NOCI that includes all its single and double excitations (NOCISD), effectively recovering the missing dynamic correlations from the reference. This compressed NOCISD is further refined through a selection process using metric and energy tests (SNOCISD). We validate the effectiveness of SNOCISD through its application to the dissociation of the nitrogen molecule and the hole-doped two-dimensional Hubbard model at various interaction strengths.

Abstract:A linear scaling local correlation approach is proposed for approximately solving the coupled cluster doubles (CCD) equations of large systems in a basis of orthogonal localized molecular orbitals (LMOs). By restricting double excitations from spatially close occupied LMOs into their associated virtual LMOs, the number of significant excitation amplitudes scales only linearly with molecular size in large molecules. Significant amplitudes are obtained to a very good approximation by solving the CCD equations of various subsystems, each of which is made up of a cluster associated with the orbital indices of a subset of significant amplitudes and the local environmental domain of the cluster. The combined effect of these two approximations leads to a linear scaling algorithm for large systems. By using typical thresholds, which are designed to target an energy accuracy, our numerical calculations for a wide range of molecules using the 6-31G or 6-31G* basis set demonstrate that the present local correlation approach recovers more than 98.5% of the conventional CCD correlation energy.

Abstract:An efficient implementation of the “cluster-in-molecule” (CIM) approach is presented for performing local electron correlation calculations in a basis of orthogonal occupied and virtual localized molecular orbitals (LMOs). The main idea of this approach is that significant excitation amplitudes can be approximately obtained by solving the coupled cluster (or Møller-Plesset perturbation theory) equations of a series of “clusters,” each of which contains a subset of occupied and virtual LMOs. In the present implementation, we have proposed a simple approach for constructing virtual LMOs of clusters, and new ways of constructing clusters and extracting the correlation contributions from calculations on clusters, which are more efficient than those suggested in the original work. More importantly, linear scaling of computational time of the CIM approach is achieved by evaluating the transformed two-electron integrals over LMOs using simple truncation techniques in limited operations (independent of the molecular size). With typical thresholds, for a variety of molecules our test calculations demonstrate that more than 99% of the conventional MP2 or coupled cluster with doubles correlation energies can be recovered in the present CIM approach.
Quantum Equation-of-Motion Method with Single, Double, and Triple Excitations

Abstract:The quantum equation-of-motion (qEOM) method with singles and doubles has been suggested to study electronically excited states while it fails to predict the excitation energies dominated by double excitations. In this work, we present an efficient implementation of the qEOM method with single, double and triple excitations. In order to reduce the computational complexity, we utilize the point group symmetry and perturbation theory to screen triple excitation operators, and the scaling is reduced from $N_o^6N_v^6$ to $N_o^5N_v^5$. Furthermore, we introduce a perturbation correction to the excitation energy to account for the effect of ignored triple excitation operators. We apply this method to study challenging cases, for which the qEOM-SD method exhibits large errors, such as the 2 $^1\Delta$ excited state of $\rm{CH}^+$ and the 2 $^1\Sigma$ state of $\rm{H}_8$ molecule. Our new method yields the energy errors less than 0.18 eV.

Abstract:We formulate a one-center non-orthogonal configuration interaction singles (1C-NOCIS) theory for the computation of core excited states of an initial singlet state with two unpaired electrons. This model, which we refer to as 1C-NOCIS two-electron open-shell (2eOS), is appropriate for computing the K-edge near-edge X-ray absorption spectra (NEXAS) of the valence excited states of closed-shell molecules relevant to pump-probe time-resolved (TR) NEXAS experiments. With inclusion of core hole relaxation effects and explicit spin adaptation, 1C-NOCIS 2eOS requires mild shifts to match experiment, is free of artifacts due to spin contamination, and can capture the high-energy region of the spectrum beyond the transitions into the singly occupied molecular orbitals (SOMO). Calculations on water and thymine illustrate the different key features of excited-state NEXAS, namely the core-to-SOMO transition as well as shifts and spin-splittings in the transitions analogous to those of the ground state. Finally, simulations of the TR-NEXAS of acetylacetone after excitation onto its pi to pi-star singlet excited state at the carbon K-edge - an experiment carried out recently - showcases the ability of 1C-NOCIS 2eOS to efficiently simulate NEXAS based on non-adiabatic molecular dynamics simulations.

Quantum Control of Atom-Ion Charge Exchange via Light-induced Conical Intersections

Abstract:Conical intersections are crossing points or lines between two or more adiabatic electronic potential energy surfaces in the multi-dimensional coordinate space of colliding atoms and molecules. Conical intersections and corresponding non-adiabatic coupling can greatly affect molecular dynamics and chemical properties. In this paper, we predict significant or measurable non-adiabatic effects in an ultracold atom-ion charge-exchange reaction in the presence of laser-induced conical intersections (LICIs). We investigate the fundamental physics of these LICIs on molecular reactivity under unique conditions: those of relatively low laser intensity of $10^8$ W/cm$^2$ and ultracold temperatures below 1 mK. We predict irregular interference effects in the charge-exchange rate coefficients between K and Ca$^+$ as functions of laser frequency. These irregularities occur in our system due to the presence of two LICIs. To further elucidate the role of the LICIs on the reaction dynamics, we compare these rate coefficients with those computed for a system where the CIs have been ``removed''. In the laser frequency window, where conical interactions are present, the difference in rate coefficients can be as large as $10^{-9}$ cm$^3$/s.

Analytic gradient and derivative couplings for the spin-flip extended configuration interaction singles method: Theory, implementation, and application to proton transfer

Abstract:We present the formalism of analytic gradients and derivative couplings for the spin-flip extended configuration interaction with single excitations (SF-XCIS) method. We report an efficient implementation of the SF-XCIS method in the framework of semiempirical quantum chemistry that allows fast excited-state calculations for large systems. The performance of the SF-XCIS method in combination with semiempirical orthogonalization-corrected models (OMx) is statistically evaluated for vertical singlet excitation energies. The SF-XCIS method treats the ground state and excited states in a fully balanced manner and properly describes conical intersections involving the ground state. It can thus be used in fewest switches surface hopping (FSSH) simulations of nonadiabatic dynamics processes. This is demonstrated in an OM2/SF-XCIS FSSH pilot study of excited-state proton transfer in 7-(2-pyridyl)indole.
Coordinate Descent Full Configuration Interaction for Excited States

Abstract:An efficient excited state method, named xCDFCI, in the configuration interaction framework, is proposed. xCDFCI extends the unconstrained nonconvex optimization problem in coordinate descent full configuration interaction~(CDFCI) to a multicolumn version, for low-lying excited states computation. The optimization problem is addressed via a tailored coordinate descent method. In each iteration, a determinant is selected based on an approximated gradient, and coefficients of all states associated with the selected determinant are updated. A deterministic compression is applied to limit memory usage. We test xCDFCI applied to H2O and N2 molecules under the cc-pVDZ basis set. For both systems, five low-lying excited states in the same symmetry sector are calculated together with the ground state. xCDFCI also produces accurate binding curves of carbon dimer in the cc-pVDZ basis with chemical accuracy, where the ground state and four excited states in the same symmetry sector are benchmarked.

Abstract:K-vacancy Auger states of N(q+) (q = 2-5) ions are studied by using the complex multireference single- and double-excitation configuration interaction (CMRD-CI) method. The calculated resonance parameters are in good agreement with the available experimental and theoretical data. It shows that the resonance positions and widths converge quickly with the increase of the atomic basis sets in the CMRD-CI calculations; the standard atomic basis set can be employed to describe the atomic K-vacancy Auger states well. The strong correlations between the valence and core electrons play important roles in accurately determining those resonance parameters, Rydberg electrons contribute negligibly in the calculations. Note that it is the first time that the complex scaling method has been successfully applied for the B-like nitrogen. CMRD-CI is readily extended to treat the resonance states of molecules in the near future.

Abstract:We have implemented the Coupled-Cluster Equation of Motion (CC-EOM) with single and double excitations coupled with semiempirical parameterizations, Pariser-Parr-Pople model and INDO Hamiltonians, to investigate the optical and nonlinear optical properties, electronic structures and the excited states properties for the conjugated polymers, The semiempirical parameters allow us to study the conjugated systems with extensive sizes. Firstly, by comparing with the quasi-exact Density Matrix Renormalization Group theory for the ID conjugated chain, we find that the CC-EOM approach can give satisfactory results for both the ground state and the excited states energies. We demonstrate that our approach can be adopted to evaluate linear and nonlinear response. We find that both the real and imaginary parts of the third-order polarizability can be solved either for static and dynamic responses. Then we apply the CC-EOM approach to study the optical signatures for the polarons in conjugated polymers. We have established a solid relationship between the rigidity of a polymer and its optical signature of the polarons.
