Abstract:This work presents new three dimensional finite elements, originated from the successful implementation of two dimensional methodology, which capture the displacement jumps by the linear interpolation of different proposed separation modes, for the modeling of failure in solids without remeshing during simulation. Nine different separation modes, which consist of three translation, two stretch, two rotation and two shear modes, have been identified by considering a fully softened element with a discontinuity. These modes are captured exactly by nine local enhanced parameters which are identified by considering the nodal displacements describing these modes and their resulting strain field. A local equilibrium equation is concerned between the stresses in the element and the traction along the discontinuity driven by a certain cohesive law along the discontinuity to obtain these enhanced parameters. The failure phenomena is captured by enhancing the strains of existing finite elements (including the displacement based, assumed and enhanced strain elements) with a set of strain modes that depend on these local enhanced parameters. The feature of the locality of the enhancement enable the enhanced parameters to be eliminated by the static condensation at the element level, leading to an efficient implementation of the resulting methods. The difficulty for tracking a smooth and continuous three dimensional failure surface prompts the usage of the global tracking algorithm which can trace the propagation at once on the whole domain. A series of numerical tests are presented to verify the performance of the new elements and several representative numerical simulations using the global tracking algorithm are performed to show the crack propagation.
