Abstract:Medical organ segmentation is a crucial step for aiding clinical investigation. However, due to intensity overlapping, blurred edges, large variability in shape and appearance, and complex backgrounds, it is still a challenging task. In this paper, a general framework named region appearance propagation (RAP) is proposed. We further apply it to segment livers with a novel hybrid variational model, in which an edge-based term is combined with two new region-based terms encoding both global intensity and appearance information. With leakage being the primary challenge for liver segmentation, we take into account mid-level and context information through modeling distributions of features in local windows. In fact, discriminative cues such as multi-layer consecutiveness and local organ deformation information are also implicitly encoded. As different features in medical images are not uniformly strong, constant balancing weights for hybrid models often lead to incorrect segmentation. In this work, a spatially adaptive weight is introduced to balance different terms and control their advantages and disadvantages. We evaluate our model on different datasets containing 38 volumes and achieve a sound score of 80 on MICCAI testing set. The proposed method can stably delineate weak edges and exclude adhering tissues according to local and global region appearance. Moreover, it is robust to initialization and can greatly alleviate the requirement for data quality. Our model is nearly automatic and the average segmentation time is about 3 minutes. Last but not least, the new framework can also be used to segment other abdominal organs.
