Abstract:Binder-free electrodes provide great opportunities for the development of high-performance energy devices due to the absence of insulating and inactive binders. In this paper, NiCo2S4 arrays with attractive nanostructures were directly grown on activated carbon textile (ACT) by a facile one-pot hydrothermal method to develop a self-supported binder-free electrode. The nanostructures can be tuned from nanorods to nanosheets by simply controlling the concentration of the sulfur source. Both arrays exhibited battery-type behavior of the positive electrode, where the nanosheets arrays with relatively higher capacity of 183.2 mA h g(-1) at 2 mA cm(-2) and better cycling stability of 82.6 % capacitance retention after 1000 cycles was employed in an asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) as positive electrode. The ASC exhibited excellent rate capability with the maximum specific energy of 56.2 Wh/kg and the specific power of 632.7 W/kg at the current density of 4 mA/cm(2). The presented results are believed to be helpful to the design and application of promising flexible binder-free electrode for high-performance hybrid supercapacitors.

Abstract:Transition-metal selenide electrodes have recently attracted increasing interest in supercapacitors resulting from their superior electrochemical performance, lower-cost, and environmental friendliness. Herein, we report a novel bimetallic Ni-Co selenide nanosheet/three-dimensional (3D) graphene/nickel foam binder-free electrode (NiCo2.1Se3.3 NSs/3D G/NF) prepared via chemical vapor deposition followed by a simple two-step hydrothermal process in this paper. The NiCo2.1Se3.3 NSs array vertically on 3D G/NF with a uniform and stable structure without using any chemical binders. This novel electrode is flexible, highly conductive, and exhibits an excellent specific capacitance of ∼742.4 F g-1 at 1 mA cm-2. Furthermore, with a 10-fold increase to 10 mA cm-2, it still retains 471.78 F g-1 and a high cycling stability of ∼83.8% of the initial retention after 1000 cycles at 10 mA cm-2, demonstrating that NiCo2.1Se3.3 NSs/3D G/NF binder-free electrode has potential for energy storage application in high-performance supercapacitor fields.

Abstract:Free-standing nitrogen-doped mesoporous carbon films were successfully prepared by carbonizing gelatin/HKUST-1 composite films, which converted from gelatin/copper hydroxide nanostrands composite films. Gelatin provides the sources of both carbon and nitrogen. The formation of HKUST-1 crystals expanded the gelatin matrix and produced porous structures which were reserved during the carbonization process. The mesoporous structures of the prepared carbon film were easily wetted by electrolytes and more suitable for rapid ionic migration. This mesoporous nitrogen-doped carbon film was explored as a binder-free electrode for supercapacitor, which exhibited highest specific energy of 28.1 W h kg(-1), specific capacity of 316 F g(-1) at a current density of 0.5 A g(-1), 168 F g(-1) at a current density of 5 A g(-1), and high capacitance retention of 92.9% with degrading of 0.00064% after charging/discharging 11,000 cycles. Abstract:Herein, flexible and porous Co3O4-carbon nanofibers (Co3O4-CNFs) were fabricated by electrospinning technique combining with the followed carbonization process. The effects of material composition and calcination temperature on morphology, pore structure, and electrochemical properties of the Co3O4-CNFs were systematically investigated. Results indicated that the obtained Co3O4-CNFs exhibited high porosity, high mechanical strength, and superior electrical conductivity. Electrochemical characterization results showed that the optimized Co3O4-CNFs as binder-free electrodes exhibited a specific capacitance of 369 F g−1 at the current density of 0.1 A g−1. Even at a high current density of 2 A g−1, the specific capacitance still remained at 181 F g−1, with the capacitance retention rate of 49%. Intriguingly, the prepared Co3O4-CNF film could recover to its original state easily after folding for three times, indicating good mechanical flexibility for free-standing electrodes. Coupled with the excellent mechanical flexibility, high specific capacitance, and simple fabrication process, the flexible and free-standing Co3O4-CNFs with hierarchical porous structure could be promising electrode materials for energy storage applications.Flexible and porous Co3O4-carbon nanofibers were prepared by electrospinning and carbonization,which can be used as free-standing electrodes for supercapacitors.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Binder-free LiCoO(2) -SACNT cathodes with excellent flexibility and conductivity are obtained by constructing a continuous three-dimensional super-aligned carbon nanotube (SACNT) framework with embedded LiCoO(2) particles. Abstract:Rational design of free-standing porous carbon materials with large specific surface area and high conductivity is a great need for ligh-weight suprecapacitors. Here, we report a flexible porous carbon film composed of metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived porous carbon polyhedrons and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as binder-free supercapacitor electrode for the first time. Due to the synergistic combination of carbon polyhedrons and CNT, the obtained carbon electrode shows a specific capacitance of 381.2 F g at 5 mV s and 194.8 F g at 2 A g and outstanding cycling stability with a Coulombic effciency above 95% after 10000 cycles at 10 A g. The assembled aqueous symmetrical supercapacitor exhibits an energy density of 9.1 Wh kg with a power density of 3500 W kg. The work opens a new way to design flexible MOF-based hierarchical porous carbon film as binder-free electrodes for high-performance energy storage devices.

Abstract:Recently, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) derived materials in the form of bulk powders with attractive chemical and structural properties show broad application in electrochemical energy storage. Bimetallic materials-based MOFs usually show better electrochemical properties than that of monometallic derivatives, while achieving the bimetallic MOFs-derived materials on current collector as a binder-free electrode is still a challenge. Here we report a new approach to directly obtain a binder-free electrode of bimetallic MOFs-derived NiCo2S4 nanosheet arrays on nickel foam (NF) substrate. The porous NiCo2S4 nanosheet arrays providing fast electrolyte permeation and rich electrochemical active sites, show an excellent specific capacity of 1354.4 C g−1, high rate performance, and outstanding cycling stability of 82.6% retention after 10,000 cycles. A hybrid supercapacitor assembled with the as-obtained binder-free electrode as a cathode and active carbon as an anode, exhibits high energy density of 49.1 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 375 W kg−1 and superior cycling stability of 94.5% retention after 10,000 cycles. These results offer a novel and general approach to construct binder-free electrode materials with advanced performance for the portable and practical energy storage device.

Abstract:The novel hierarchical Ni-Co sulfide nanosheet-nanotubes arrays were directly grown on Ni foam, as binder-free electrodes, have been successfully synthesized following a one-step facile hydrothermal method combined with a sulfide treatment. The initial value of the area capacitance achieved 2.28 F cm−2 at a current density of 1 mA cm−2. A high areal capacitance retention of 95.2% compared to activation-induced peak value is achieved after 3000 charge-discharge cycles, which is much better than counter Ni-Co oxide electrode (1.75 F cm−2 at 1 mA cm−2, 93.2% retention compared to activation induced peak value). The outstanding and excellent super capacitive performance is ascribed to ion-exchange reaction, which induces a flexible hollow nanotube feature and show higher conductivity, compared with Ni-Co oxide NWs. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and Electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS) results confirmed that the synthesized electrode contains the lowest resistance at high, and at lower frequency, leading to easy penetration of electrolytes and fast transportation of electrons inside the electrode. In this proposed work, a one-step hydrothermal method has been followed, and provided for the sulfide-induced, with a noticeable electrochemical performance of nickel cobaltite compounds and supplying a promising route for high-performance supercapacitor electrodes.

Abstract:Designing high-performance binder-free electrochemical electrodes is crucially important toward supercapacitors. In this paper, a Zn/N-doped porous carbon film coating on flexible carbon nanotubes (ZIF-8@CT-800) derived from the epitaxial Zn-MOF film growth on cotton textile was successfully fabricated via a combination of the liquid-phase epitaxial (LPE) method and calcination treatments. The ZIF-8@CT-800 serves directly as a self-supported electrode for supercapacitors and exhibits a high areal capacitance of 930 mF·cm-2 at a current density of 1 mA·cm-2 and a good recyclability of 86% after 2000 cycles. The excellent supercapacitor property is ascribed to the unique structural design of ZIF-8@CT-800, which provides appropriate channels for enhanced electronic and ionic transport as well as increased surface area for accessing more electrolyte ions. This work will provide significant guidance for designing MOF-derived porous carbon to construct flexible binder-free electrode materials with high electrochemical performance.

Abstract:Electrospinning carbon nanofibers with one-dimensional nanostructures have enormous potential for electronic applications owing to their flexibility, electrical conductivity, high surface area and attractive structure. In this paper, porous nitrogen-doped carbon nanofiber membranes with chemical crosslinking structure (PNCNMs-CC) were prepared for lithium-ion batteries anodes by crosslinking treatment and carbonization process using polyimide as precursor, melamine as nitrogen source and ethyl orthosilicate as pore-forming agent. The heightened nitrogen content synergizes with the augmented specific surface area, engendering a striking electrochemical enhancement. Rich pore structure provides more active sites. When utilized as a binder-free, current collector-free anode, PNCNMs-CC shows an excellent rate performance and long cycle stability. The first discharge specific capacity of PNCNMs-CC delivered 710 mAh g−1 at 50 mA g−1. After 1000 cycles at a high current density of 1 A g−1, PNCNMs-CC shows 88 % capacity retention, demonstrating a promising candidate as the flexible anodes for high-performance energy storage devices.

Abstract:Flexible and binder-free film of N, O-doped carbon nanofibers (CNFs) is the ideal anode for high-energy-density batteries. Here, CNFs flexible films which the N, O dopant give defect in graphite structure results in high specific surface area more than 500 m2 g-1. A flexible film of CNF800 carbonized at 800 °C delivers initial capacities of 2000 and 755 mAh g-1 at the current densities of 5 and 10 A g-1, respectively. After 500 cycles, CNF800 remains the capacities of 1251, 865, 702, and 305 mAh g-1 at 0.5, 1, 5, and 10 A g-1, respectively. The microstructures of CNFs under various state of charge are studied by HRTEM, XPS, 13C NMR, and so forth. The lithiation/delithiation mainly happens to the interlayer of graphite domain of CNFs. The dopants of nitrogen and oxygen involve in lithiation, but much of Li-N is irreversible. The excellent performances of CNFs film can be attributed to the N, O doped structure of graphite domain that has increased the conductivity and lithium storage ability. Further development of N, O doped CNFs may enable practical applications as flexible anode in high-performance lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:It is very important to develop electrode materials with good mechanical flexibility and excellent electrochemical performance to adapt to the development of flexible electronic devices, and the preparation of non-binder flexible electrode is a good strategy. In this work, nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (N-CNT) were grown in situ on the surface of carbon cloth (CC) by a simple method and directly used as binder-free electrodes for supercapacitors. The electrochemical tests show that the electrode can achieve an areal capacitance of 4081.6 mF/cm2 when the ampere density is set at 2mA/cm2, and when the ampere density is promoted 10 times to 20mA/cm2, this electrode can still retain 72.8% of the areal capacitance at 2mA/cm2. The flexible electrode can also retain 90.3% of an areal capacitance after 5000 recharge/discharge cycles at a set ampere density of 10 mA/cm2 and 97.6% of its areal capacitance after 50 bending cycles. The electrode was assembled into a symmetrical supercapacitor for electrochemical performance testing, and an areal capacitance of 572.6 mF/cm2 can be maintained when the ampere density is set at 2 mA/cm2, and an energy density of 79.53 and 40.28 µWh/cm2 at a power density of 1000 and 10,000µW/cm2, separately. The excellent electrochemical performance is mainly attributed to the following three points: (1) No binder is used to avoid the problems that affect the conductivity and utilization rate of active substances caused by the binder. (2) The electrode material has a large specific surface area and has more active sites for electrochemical reaction. (3) The presence of N and O is of great help to improve the electrochemical performance of the electrode material.

Abstract:Silica (SiO2) with high specific capacity and low cost is a promising anode for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), whereas its application is challenged by the substantial volume expansion and poor electrical conductivity. Phenolated and depolymerized lignin furfural (PDLF) resin as renewable carbon precursor, and hollow SiO2 nanotubes are thus designed to address these challenges. Herein, we synthesize the free-standing SiO2 nanotubes@carbon nanofibers (SNTs@CNFs) mat via electrospinning. From the nano-scale morphology, SNTs are embedded into the interior and surface of CNFs along with the fiber framework. The hollow and porous SiO2 nanotubes relieve the volume expansion during the lithium-ion insertion/extraction. Meanwhile, the interconnected bio-based CNFs improve the electrical conductivity and shorten the lithium-ion diffusion path. The SNTs@CNFs mat exhibits excellent mechanical flexibility and is used as a free-standing anode without any binders, carbon black, and current collectors, it delivers an ultra-high reversible capacity of 1067 mAh g−1 at the current density of 100 mA g−1 after 300 cycles. Even at a high current density of 1000 mA g−1, it remains a reversible capacity of 562 mAh g−1 after 700 cycles. This work marks an important exploration for next-generation high-energy density LIBs and other flexible energy storage devices.

Construction of 3D interconnected NiCo 2 S 4 /bio-carbon coated Ni foam as binder-free electrode for high-performance supercapacitor

Abstract:Although transition metal hydroxides/sulfides are considered as promising potential electrode materials for supercapacitors due to their excellent electrochemical activity, the low electrical conductivity, easy agglomeration of nanomaterials and poor rate performance seriously hinder their practical applications. Herein, we construct 3D interconnected binder-free electrode NiCo 2 S 4 /bio-carbon coated nickel foam (NiCo 2 S 4 /GRCNF) by growing NiCo 2 S 4 nanosheets on the surface of low-cost and highly conductive GRCNF substrate via a simple hydrothermal reaction followed with subsequent sulfidation. As suggested by systematic characterizations, the advantages of obtained NiCo 2 S 4 /GRCNF include that the ultrathin 3D interconnected network of NiCo 2 S 4 can furnish massive electrochemically active sites for faradic reaction, and the highly conductive GRCNF substrate promotes electron transfer and meanwhile prevents the aggregation of NiCo 2 S 4 nanosheets. With a high specific capacitance of 7.71 F cm -2 at 3 mA cm -2 , NiCo 2 S 4 /GRCNF has a huge application advantage over the contrast samples Ni-Co LDH/NF (3.29 F cm -2 ) and Ni-Co LDH/GRCNF (5.97 F cm -2 ). In addition, NiCo 2 S 4 /GRCNF shows a much higher rate performance (82.1%) than Ni-Co LDH/NF (44.5%) and Ni-Co LDH/GRCNF (66.4%). Furthermore, hybrid supercapacitor NiCo 2 S 4 /GRCNF//GNPC which is assembled with NiCo 2 S 4 /GRCNF as the anode possesses an impressive energy density of 0.429 mWh cm -2 at a power density of 7.023 mW cm -2 and good cycling stability (82.3% over 5000 cycles). The outstanding electrochemical performance of NiCo 2 S 4 /GRCNF suggests that the reported strategy provides new inspiration for the design and preparation of new binder-free composite electrodes for electrochemical energy storage.

Abstract:The current study aimed to understand the effects of using binder-free electrodes in comparison with those with PVDF binder on the electrochemical performance of MgSrS/CNT composite for supercapacitors (SCs) electrode. MgSrS composite was produced using a hydrothermal method, and then their physical integration with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was done to improve their electrochemical characteristics. After that, electrochemical performance measurements were carried out utilizing PVDF and binder-free setups. The binder-free MgSrS/CNT electrodes outperform their binder-containing counterparts with a significant boost in capacity and energy density. The performance of a three-electrode system was assessed, and it was observed that the electrodes composed of binder-free MgSrS/CNT revealed an outstanding capacity of 1130.0 C/g when subjected to testing at 3 mV/s. Overall performance was high in an asymmetric supercapattery configuration, where the positive electrode was made of binder-free MgSrS/CNT. In particular, precise parameters with values of 245.3 C/g for specific capacity, 54.0 Wh/kg for energy density, and 1610.0 W/kg for power density were obtained. Notably, the product displayed exceptional cycling stability, preserving 87.1% of its initial capacity even after 5000 cycles. Binder-free MgSrS/CNT electrodes excel in electrical efficiency due to enhanced electron transport, improved ionic conductivity, greater active site availability, and reduced byproduct formation without N-poly-vinylidene fluoride (PVDF).

Abstract:SnO2–carbon nanotube (CNT) composite sheets are synthesized using poly(vinylpyrrolidone) to uniformly load a monolayer of SnO2 nanoparticles onto the surfaces of CNTs and CNT bundles within cross-stacked CNT sheets. When they are used as high-capacity (over 850 mA h g–1) and binder-free anodes in rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, they exhibit good cycle performance, as shown in the lower portion of the figure.

Abstract:A non-woven network of porous nitrogen-doping carbon nanofibers (PNCNFs) is prepared by electrospinning of polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), followed by stabilization and carbonization. The specific surface areas, porosity and nitrogen content of PNCNFs can be easily controlled by adjusting the content ratio of PVP to PAN. The non-woven PNCNFs based network provides abundant interface sites and hierarchical porosity for solvated ions. In a three-electrode configuration, PNCNFs-2-3 provides a high specific capacitance of 198Fg−1 at 1Ag−1 in 6M KOH. A two-electrode configuration supercapacitor using PNCNFs-2-3 delivers 148Fg−1 capacitance at 1Ag−1 as well as excellent cycling stability.
Carbon-coated Ni 2 P nanoparticles coated on CNTs synthesized by an in-situ solid-state method for high-performance hybrid supercapacitors and lithium-ion batteries

Abstract:The pursuit of electrode materials with excellent performance in both supercapacitors and lithium-ion batteries holds the potential to streamline the construction of hybrid electrochemical energy storage systems and contribute to cost reduction. In this paper, we introduce a novel nanocomposite—carbon-coated Ni 2 P nanoparticles coated on CNTs (CNTs@(Ni 2 P@C))—via an in-situ one-step solid-state method. This design not only prevents the aggregation of Ni 2 P nanoparticles with a size of 5–8 nm but also mitigates its volume change during charging and discharging cycles. Simultaneously, it establishes a rapid electron transfer pathway between CNTs and Ni 2 P nanoparticles, enhancing the electron transport kinetics within the synthesized nanocomposite. The synthesized CNTs@(Ni 2 P@C) nanocomposite exhibits high performance in both SCs and LIBs. An ultra-high specific capacity of 378.5 mAh g −1 (2725.2 F g −1 ) at 1 A g −1 and a good rate capacity (189.3 mAh g −1 at 20 A g −1 ) are achieved when used in supercapacitors. The hybrid supercapacitor device assembled using the synthesized nanocomposite exhibits a high specific capacity of 84.3 mAh g −1 at 1 A g −1 and excellent capacity retention of 92 % after 10,000 cycles. A high energy density of 67.47 Wh kg −1 can be delivered at a power density of 0.84 kW kg −1 . When used in LIBs, the synthesized nanocomposite exhibits a reliable reversible specific capacity of 329 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 after 100 cycles and a high capacity retention of 90 % after 5000 cycles at 2.0 A g −1 . The proposed in-situ solid-state method and the synthesized CNTs@(Ni 2 P@C) nanocomposite will strongly promote the development of difunctional electrode materials for supercapacitors and lithium-ion batteries.
