Finally, existing challenges were addressed and the future perspectives of tidal current energy development in China were provided.

Abstract:Owing to its high resource predictability and power density, tidal current energy has garnered extensive attention worldwide, from both academia and industry, in the past decade. Currently, China is also accelerating the development of tidal current energy because of the abundant tidal current resources along the country's highly populated southeast coasts. The objective of this development is to meet the increasing power demands for coastal cities, islands, and various maritime applications. The tidal current energy conversion systems in China have undergone rapid technological advancements in the past ten years, particularly after the deployment of several large-sized tidal current turbines. Although several review papers have covered the evolution of tidal current energy converters (TCECs) in China since the 1980s, a comprehensive update of the past decade has not been systematically reported, which might be of significant interest to researchers, developers, and investors worldwide. In this paper, we present the state-of-the-art TCEC technological developments in China in terms of scale, efficiency, reliability, and other innovations. Their technology readiness level and problems are also discussed. It is found that TCEC development in China has been diverging toward two different directions: large-sized turbines for grid connection and small-scale turbines for diverse applications in marine environments. Finally, we present the current challenges and future trends of TCEC advancement in China.

Abstract:Tidal current energy has received extensive attention from both academia and industry in the past decade due to its high power density and strong predictability. Besides Europe and the United States, China has also made tremendous efforts in tidal current energy development, as this abundant ocean renewable resource is expected to provide consistent and clean power for highly-populated coastal cities or remote islands. To evaluate the tidal current resource potential in China, both national assessments and regional investigations have been conducted with different methods and resolutions. However, these evaluation results have not been systematically collected, which are poorly informed to researchers, developers, and investors. At the same time, the conducted assessments sometimes show discrepancies, indicating the necessity of analysing data uncertainty and improving data quality. Under the circumstances, this work presents a review of tidal current resource assessment studies in China, and most existing evaluations for tidal current energy hotspots have been included, classified and compared. Particularly, these regions of interest are further categorised with their exploitability, based on not only theoretical energy reserve estimation, but also local conditions of bathymetry, transportation, policy, etc. According to the assessment results, Zhoushan Archipelago has been considered the most suitable area for large-scale tidal current energy development in China, and the waters nearby Chengshan Cape and Qiongzhou Strait are also with great potential. Furthermore, assessment result uncertainties are analysed, and suggestions on scientific research, technology innovation, and business investment are also proposed for future China tidal current energy development.

Abstract:Tidal current energy shows great attractiveness as it stores an enormous amount of predictable sustainable resources that can be extracted and used for commercial power generation. The present study aims at investigating the performance of a 300 W counter-rotating type horizontal axis tidal turbine (HATT) by computational fluid dynamic (CFD) and experiments. And this study provides a novel method to test the performance of a tidal current turbine. In the present work, a bi-directional counter-rotating type HATT, the power and blade diameter are 300 W and 1 m respectively, was designed according to blade element momentum theory (BEMT). The CFD simulations, flume experiment tests, and sea trial were carried out to evaluate its performance. The experiment tests include 1/4 prototype blades towing tank model test and prototype large radius rotating arm tank test. The power coefficients of the blades under different blade tip speed ratios were obtained. Results shown that a good agreement has been obtained between the CFD predictions and the experiment data, moreover, the counter-rotating type HATT has a great power output performance. Such results provide valuable data for validating the hydrodynamic design and numerical simulations of counter-rotating type HATT. What's more, this work provides a novel method to test the performance of a tidal current turbine, which is a large-radius rotating arm tank test.

Abstract:Considering the depletion of oil, coal, gas and other fossil energy, and the increasingly serious environmental pollution, all countries in the world are developing clean and renewable energy, such as wind energy, water energy, solar energy, etc., to alleviate the current energy crisis. Tidal current energy belongs to the marine renewable energy. It is clean, pollution-free, and abundant, with a good prospect of development due to its similarity with wind energy. This paper firstly analyses the reserves and distribution of tidal current energy in China. Then the early exploration of Tidal Current Power Generation System (TCPGS) in China is briefly introduced. Subsequently, it gives the details of the devices and experimental platforms of TCPGS that were researched and developed by various universities, research institutes and enterprises in China. The information mainly includes: the size and the capacity of the system, the support structure, turbine type, the selection of generator, and some river and offshore test information, etc. Finally, it discusses the similarities and differences between China and other countries in tidal current power generation technology, and summaries the current development status and gives the prospect of the TCPGS technology in China.

Abstract:Tidal current power generation system extracts energy by transferring the kinetic energy of tidal movement to the motion of power turbines. The long coastline of China contains abundant tidal energy, but not all coastal area worth exploiting. It is generally considered that a mean spring peak tidal current of at least 2 m/s is required for tidal current power exploitation. Thus we choose to evaluate the tidal kinetic energy of East China Sea coastal area where 95 waterways contained, accounting for 78.6% of China's tidal kinetic energy. Considering the interaction between the Yangtze Estuary and Hangzhou Bay, a high resolution model with unstructured 3D grid system FVCOM (finite volume coastal ocean model) has been applied to simulate tidal motion in the Yangtze Estuary-Hangzhou Bay. The numerical results of the refined model has been validated with: (a) measured tidal currents data after harmonic analysis; (b) measured tide level hydrograph and velocity which were observed by China's coastal physical oceanography and marine meteorological special investigation on the East China Sea during August, 2014. It is also noticed that the area where power density larger than 10 kW/m2 are mainly distributed over North Port of Yangtze Estuary and north of Hangzhou Bay, and the maximal value of the possible maximum velocity of the tidal current reaches 3.0-3.5 m/s at Hangzhou Bay.

Abstract:Tidal current turbine (TCT) is a kind of device which converts the tidal current energy into electricity and its technology has got rapid progress in last decade. The design of TCT includes the blade, power train, electrical system and power converter, sealing system and foundation, etc. In spite of the principle similarity to the wind energy, the design of the blade should be specially carried on for its characteristics of cavitation, corrosion resistance and the big force on the blades. In this paper, the technology developments of the TCT blade design are reviewed, including the hydrodynamics design and the structure design. Subsequently the key technologies to be researched for the TCT blade design are concluded and forecasted.

Abstract:As a clean and renewable resource, tidal current holds significant development potential. However, accurately assessing tidal current energy resources has been a persistent challenge. This study proposes a comprehensive assessment method using a small-scale, high-precision, multi-criteria three-dimensional hydrodynamic model to assess resource reserves applied to the Zhairuoshan Waterway. The hydrodynamic model was employed to simulate critical parameters such as tidal level, flow velocity, and flow direction. Multiple statistical indicators were used to evaluate the model's accuracy, showing consistency. The study analysed the flow speed distribution over a complete cycle, revealing an average flow speed of 1.51 m/s, with a maximum speed reaching 3.83 m/s. The generally high flow speeds within the waterway, coupled with the stability of the tidal current, indicate the significant resource potential of the study area. A quantitative analysis of the spatial distribution of tidal current energy was conducted using energy flux density, and the results showed that high energy density areas are widely distributed. Furthermore, the theoretical tidal energy resources of the waterway were calculated, showing that the maximum resource reserves could reach 9.98 MW at the selected cross-sections. Coupled with the analysis of unit-width energy flux, the high-potential areas within the waterway were further identified.

Abstract:Based on a general review of marine renewable energy in China, an assessment of the development status and amount of various marine renewable energy resources, including tidal energy, tidal current energy, wave energy, ocean thermal energy, and salinity gradient energy in China’s coastal seas, such as the Bohai Sea, the Yellow Sea, the East China Sea, and the South China Sea, is presented. We have found that these kinds of marine renewable energy resources will play an important role in meeting China’s future energy needs. Additionally, considering the uneven distribution of China’s marine renewable energy and the influences of its exploitation on the environment, we have suggested several sites with great potential for each kind of marine energy. Furthermore, perspectives on and challenges related with marine renewable energy in China are addressed.

Abstract:As an abundant, clean, and predictable source of renewable energy, tidal current energy provides a cost-effective alternative to fossil fuels. Tidal current energy harvesting technologies are still at their early stages of development. Even some advanced demonstration projects with full-scale tidal current energy converters (TCECs) still face considerable technical barriers, and their environmental impacts are unclear. This study presents a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art of tidal current energy harvesting schemes and life cycle assessment (LCA) studies of TCECs. By reviewing the state-of-the-art of research and development efforts of tidal current energy harvesting technologies, key advancements required for their successful commercialization at the utility scale in the tidal current energy industry are identified. Detailed LCA studies of TCECs are presented to indicate their energy consumption and environmental impacts. Additionally, some comprehensive comments of development of TCECs and LCA are presented, which can be used to guide decision making towards more sustainable energy practices.

Abstract:Tidal current energy is a promising renewable energy resource. Full scale tidal current turbines (TCT) have been deployed all over the world. To verify the design methods of large TCTs with high reliability and efficiency, a 600-kW tidal current turbine was designed and tested in this study. This turbine consisted of a two-blade rotor, a low speed ratio gearbox and a medium speed generator. The turbine was grid-connected through a full-rated converter, and its speed was controlled to capture the maximum power. First, to reach high turbine performance, system design details and maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control strategy were considered. Then, the 600-kW turbine was manufactured, and an onshore test was carried out to test power transmission and control performance. The power performance of the blades and control system were further tested in the sea trial carried out in Zhoushan. Good agreement was obtained between theoretical analyses and test results. Finally, to ascertain causes for observed power fluctuations, the power spectral density (PSD) was analyzed; the results indicated that power fluctuations may be due to stream shear.

Abstract:Today's environmental problems have triggered ozone depletion, global warming, acid rain and a host of other environmental crises, energy crisis after environmental crisis. Therefore, the development and utilization of clean and renewable energy become the only way for future economic development, is to ease the energy supply tension and an important measure to address climate change. As a renewable energy which can be exploited and utilized, tidal energy can be an important supplement of energy supply in China. But in fact, due to cost, technical level and other practical factors, researchers on the development and utilization of tidal energy prospects are still mixed. In this paper, the basic principle, energy efficiency and environmental impact of tidal power generation are analyzed and summarized based on the research results and practical application of tidal power development in recent years, the feasibility of developing tidal power as a new energy source is also discussed. Compared with conventional power generation, it can save non-renewable resources and reduce the emission of toxic and harmful substances, which has great development potential and value.

Abstract:The ocean contains a variety of renewable energy resources, little of which has been exploited. Here, we review both tidal range and tidal stream energy, with a focus on the resource, feedbacks, and environmental interactions. The review covers a wide range of timescales of relevance to tidal energy, from fortnightly (spring-neap) and semi-diurnal variability, down to array, and device-scale turbulence. When simulating the regional tidal energy resource, and to assess environmental impacts, it is necessary to account for feedbacks between the tidal array and the resource itself. We critically review various methods for simulating energy extraction, from insights gained through theoretical studies of “tidal fences” in idealized channels, to realistic three-dimensional model studies with complex geometry and arrays of turbines represented by momentum sinks and additional turbulence due to the presence of rotors and support structures. We discuss how variability can be reduced by developing multiple (aggregated) sites with a consideration of the enhanced phase diversity offered by exploiting less energetic tidal currents. This leads to future research questions that have not yet been explored in depth at ﬁrst-generation tidal sites in relatively shel-tered channels (e.g., the interaction of waves with currents). Such enhanced understanding of real sea conditions, including the effects of wind and waves, leads to our other identiﬁed primary future research direction—reduced uncertainties in turbulence predictions, including the development of realistic models that simulate the interaction between ambient turbulence and the turbulence resulting from multiple wakes, and changes to system-wide hydrodynamics, water quality, and sedimentation.

Abstract:Tidal current power is one of the promising and reliable renewable energies with the advantage of continuous and predictable resource. It can make stable electricity regardless of weather conditions or seasons all year around. The required technologies for tidal current power in the ocean have been developed for years and now recognized that it could be commercialized after intensive field tests and successful demonstrations. There are several tidal farm development projects in the world, such as the MeyGen project in UK with its commercialization at hand. However, various research subjects in the tidal current energy field are seeking improvements and industrialization of tidal current power in terms of economy and technical reliability. This paper introduces the resource assessment procedure of tidal energy that has been applied in Korea coastal regions. The key research subjects for tidal current power together with the interaction effect of multi-arrangement is described. Also, this paper is to introduce the research output of each subject such as turbine design, experimental validation, turbine interaction and wake, multi-array module, FSI (fluid-structure interaction), and duct application.

Abstract:Tidal current energy is prominent and renewable. Great progress has been made in the exploitation technology of tidal current energy all over the world in recent years, and the large scale device has become the trend of tidal current turbine (TCT) for its economies. Instead of the similarity to the wind turbine, the tidal turbine has the characteristics of high hydrodynamic efficiency, big thrust, reliable sealing system, tight power transmission structure, etc. In this paper, a 1/5th scale horizontal axis tidal current turbine has been designed, manufactured and tested before the full scale device design. Firstly, the three-blade horizontal axis rotor was designed based on traditional blade element momentum theory and its hydrodynamic performance was predicted in numerical model. Then the power train system and stand-alone electrical control unit of tidal current turbine, whose performances were accessed through the bench test carried out in workshop, were designed and presented. Finally, offshore tests were carried out and the power performance of the rotor was obtained and compared with the published literatures, and the results showed that the power coefficient was satisfactory, which agrees with the theoretical predictions.

Abstract:A pragmatic and detailed sequence for the integrated design and implementation of a 120-kW horizontal-axis tidal current energy conversion system is presented, thus offering a valuable experience that contributes to the progress of tidal energy systems. The overall design of a full-scale system, containing the system design, control concept, and sea trial is provided in its entirety. The system design includes the turbine, pitch system, mechanical drive train, and electrical system. The blade parameters, hydrofoil data, and detailed structures of these electromechanical systems are shown. The control concept, comprising the grid-connected, maximum power point tracking (MPPT), and pitch controls, is proposed according to the analysis of the output power characteristic of the tidal energy system operation. The main objectives include confining the captured power at its rated value for protection when the rated current velocity is exceeded, capturing the maximum power below the rated current velocity, and regulating the active and reactive power to ensure electric power quality. A workshop test and a sea trial are carried out. The in situ experimental results of a complete operating period validated the effectiveness and feasibility of the entire system design, control concept, and experimental method.
