Abstract:Pervasive and sensor-driven systems are by nature open and extensible, both in terms of input and tasks they are required to perform. Data streams coming from sensors are inherently noisy, imprecise and inaccurate, with differing sampling rates and complex correlations with each other. These characteristics pose a significant challenge for traditional approaches to storing, representing, exchanging, manipulating and programming with sensor data. Semantic Web technologies provide a uniform framework for capturing these properties. Offering powerful representation facilities and reasoning techniques, these technologies are rapidly gaining attention towards facing a range of issues such as data and knowledge modelling, querying, reasoning, service discovery, privacy and provenance. This article reviews the application of the Semantic Web to pervasive and sensor-driven systems with a focus on information modelling and reasoning along with streaming data and uncertainty handling. The strengths and weaknesses of current and projected approaches are analysed and a roadmap is derived for using the Semantic Web as a platform, on which open, standard-based, pervasive, adaptive and sensor-driven systems can be deployed.

Abstract:A semantic and automatic framework for network smart space is proposed in this paper. In the framework, techniques of spontaneous service provision, context-aware, semantic reasoning, and pervasive service management are smoothly synthesized. A six-layer conceptual architecture is introduced on the basis of functional characteristics of framework. It enables objects in network smart space to interact spontaneously, provides semantic-integration context awareness, and supports meta-service based adaptability and scalability. We illustrate our ideas through a scenario of conference travel service in network smart space, which demonstrates the feasibility of our framework.

Abstract:After merger of Web Services and Semantic Web, Semantic Web Services (SWS) has received a lot of attention from researchers due to its ability of automatic Web Service discovery, execution and composition. Currently Web Service systems, which publish WSDL-described Web Services in UDDIs, cannot support SWS and UDDI has become the bottleneck of the whole system and would cause single node failure problems. Therefore, we propose a CAN-based P2P system to replace traditional UDDI, by distributing the functions of the UDDI among all the peers in the P2P network. At the same time, we design an ontology-based mechanism, guaranteeing every service would be registered on a specific peer in the CAN-based P2P network, according to the service's ontology. By replacing the UDDI, our system improves the scalability and stability of the SWS system, and realizes an efficient ontology-based discovery of Semantic Web Services.

Abstract:In smart space applications, we usually adopt semantic Web technologies for supporting pervasive context-aware ability to process many onerous tasks, e.g., knowledge sharing, context reasoning and interoperability. In order to achieve above purpose, it is necessary to exploit a Shared Ontologies for Pervasive Computing (SO4PC). These ontologies are expressed with standard Web Ontology Language(OWL) and include modular component vocabularies to represent intelligent agents with associated beliefs, desires, intentions, time, space, events, user profiles, actions, policies for security and private protection. We discuss how SO4PC can be extended and used to support the applications of Smart Meeting Rooms (SMR) which is a broker-centric agent architecture.

Abstract:The Semantic Web (Berners-Lee, Hendler, & Lassila, 2001) has become increasingly significant as it proposes an evolution of the current World Wide Web from a web of documents to a distributed and decentralised, global knowledge-base. Based on the notion of interlinked resources grounded within formally defined ontologies, it promises to be an enabling technology for the automation of many Web-based tasks, by facilitating a shared understanding of a domain through inference over shared knowledge models. Semantic Work Environment (SWE) applications use Semantic Web techniques to support the work of the user by collecting knowledge about the current needs in a specific activity, and providing both inferred and augmented knowledge that can then be integrated into current work. Web Services have emerged as distributed, heterogeneous software components that provide machine access to the services otherwise offered on the Web through Web pages. Built upon defacto Web standards for syntax, communication protocols, and markup languages such as XML, Web services provide a near ubiquitous mechanism for communication between applications and agents. In addition, such services can be composed to provide additional functionality, thus facilitating the rapid construction of new services. However, the dynamic use of services is limited by the need to agree a-priori upon data models and interface definitions. By coupling Web service technology with Semantic Web technology, Semantic Web Services can partially relax these constraints, both in the dynamic use of services, and in the data models shared by such services. Several examples of such services have been developed, for example, the ITTALKS services (Cost, Finin, & Joshi, 2002), which are considered in this chapter.

Abstract:Recently, there has been a growing need for integrating legacy relational databases with semantic web ontologies, however, experience in building such applications has re- vealed a gap between semantic web languages and relational data model. We present a formal mapping system to bridge the gap and study the problem of reasoning and query answer- ing using view underlying the mapping system. Particularly, we consider a special mapping called "constraint mapping" between database integrity constraints and OWL axioms. We then propose an approach to incorporating these OWL ax- ioms and description logic reasoning into query rewriting us- ing views to enable the algorithm to answer more types of queries. The approach has been used to develop a pilot data integration application for neuroscience community.

Abstract:Location-aware systems provide customised services or applications according to users' locations. While much research has been carried out in developing models to represent location information and spatial relationships, it is usually limited to modelling simple environments (cf. [ 13,19,3]). This paper proposes a unified space model for more complex environments (e.g., city plan or forest). This space model provides a flexible, expressive, and powerful spatial representation. It also proposes a new data structure - an integrated lattice and graph model - to express comprehensive spatial relationships. This structure not only provides multiple graphs at different abstraction levels, but it also collapses the whole map into smaller local graphs. This mechanism is beneficial in reducing the complexity of creating and maintaining a map and improving the efficiency of path finding algorithms.

Abstract:This paper presents a brief review of state-of-the- art research in the field of intelligent spaces. With the increased availability of smart sensors and context-aware appliances that are equipped with embedded computing and communication capability, the intelligent space concept have found widespread applications. First, we introduce the concept, and applications of intelligent spaces. Then we explore research issues on the implementation and design of intelligent spaces, including hardware, networking, system architecture, information understanding and inference, decision making and acting from a system-level perspective. Finally, we present a case study on the intelligent transportation spaces in details.

Abstract:Compared with smart spaces addressed previously, the smart vehicle space is quite special. First, unlike room, it is a high mobile space. Second, it requires frequent information exchange with the outer environment; for instance, it may need local traffic information and other local services. The complex vehicle space needs a software infrastructure of high adaptation to meet the complex and easy variational situations. This paper proposes a semantic and adaptive middleware platform, i.e., ScudWare, for smart vehicle space. In ScudWare, techniques of multiagent, context-aware, and adaptive component management are smoothly synthesized. It consists of three key components, namely 1) semantic virtual agents; 2) a semantic context management service; and 3) an adaptive component management service. This enables entities in smart vehicle space to interact autonomously, provides semantic-integration context awareness, and supports component-based adaptability and scalability. A test bed of smart car space is built to evaluate the ScudWare, which demonstrates the effectiveness and efficiency of ScudWare

Abstract:Architectural supports, e.g., user context processing and learning content management are essential for facilitating the development and proliferation of context-aware e-learning services. In this paper, we propose a context-aware e-learning infrastructure called Semantic Learning Space. It leverages the Semantic Web technologies to support semantic knowledge representation, systematic context management, interoperable content integration, expressive knowledge query, and adaptive content recommendation. The functionality encapsulated in the infrastructure handles the common, time-consuming and low-level details in learning context processing and content management. The architectural design and enabling technologies are described in detail. Finally, the prototype implementation and preliminary experimental results are presented.

Abstract:Web of things is a huge network connecting many devices,how to achieve inter-things information sharing and collaborative working in physical world is the essence of the implementation of web of things.At the same time,by virtue of ontology,which is the cornerstone of semantic web,the concepts and the inter-concepts relationships about things can be conveniently expressed,therefore,to integrate the semantic web and the web of things to form semantic web of things is an effective means to implement web of things.For the semantic collaboration method of semantic web of things,we propose to combine the cyber-physical society with the wisdom web of things,by taking the semantic space composed of four sub-spaces of cyberspace,physical space,social space and mental space as target,and combining ontology and ontology reasoning technology in semantic web,to build semantic collaboration service framework of semantic web of things through ontology-based semantic matching.Experimental results show that through the semantic collaborative process,namely,semantic matching,filtering services and service ratings,it is able to provide users with the best services to meet their preferences.

Abstract:The continuous blending of boundaries between personal and corporate data leads to overall enterprise information and knowledge pervading not only common but personal data sources. To fully sharing potentially useful information within entire enterprise, there are growing needs of a generic, interoperable, and flexible infrastructure to integrate and coordinate information across corporate and individual desktops on semantic or knowledge level. In this context, we introduce ESD, a desktop information sharing infrastructure based on Semantic Grid vision to achieve adaptive and intelligence information sharing across enterprise corporate and personal desktops. A primary framework for ESD is introduced based on the analysis of key criteria in realizing the vision of an infrastructure for information sharing, management, searching, and navigating on desktop grid. Focuses of this position paper are placed on the background, vision and the outline of ESD approach.

Abstract:As ubiquitous computing pursues naturalness and harmony, the need for context-ware ability in software middleware is growing to respond to highly dynamic computing environments. In order to facilitate the realization of such ability, the middleware infrastructure is required to acquisition, representation, fusion, and inference context information correctly and reliably. This paper is concerned with semantic and context-based information management in SCUDWare middleware for smart vehicle space. We emphasize on the "semantic" aspect of context information, by using semantic web technology and web ontology language to build the ontology of the context in this space. In addition, we propose an application scenario and a prototype system. The contribution is twofold. First, we present a semantic and context-based information model to develop a semantic and context management service in SCUDWare middleware. Second, we have built an ontology of the smart vehicle space, with which we make context fusion and inference for middleware adaptation.

Abstract:Context information has emerged as an important resource to enable autonomy and flexibility of ubiquitous applications. The widespread use of context information necessitates an efficient lookup service in a wide-area network over multiple smart spaces. In this paper, we propose a context lookup framework based on a semantic peer-to-peer network to support the building of context-aware applications in multiple smart spaces. Collaborative context-aware applications that utilize different context information in multiple smart spaces can be easily built by invoking a pull or push service provided by our framework. We describe the design of our system, demonstrate the development process of context-aware applications, and report the measurements obtained from our prototype.

Abstract:Data and service discoveries are two significant applications in the Internet, and almost all the network functions need their support. A lot of research work has focused on either service discovery or data discovery respectively, although they cannot be separated. The existing network, due to its decentralized nature and weak support for semantic, is still chaotic and lacks the ability to allow users to discover, extract and integrate the information of interest from heterogeneous resources. This paper proposes a scalable, high performance distributed system for data and service unified discovery. In order to exclude ambiguity, our unified discovery system adopts one-dimensional vector in semantic space to generally identify and locate data and services, and then represent specific services by OWL Web Ontology Language for Services (OWL-S). Moreover, we employ Juxtapose (JXTA) architecture as a proper foundation to organize network peers. Experimental results illustrate that, compared with other discovery systems, the semantic-based unified discovery system can improve accuracy and efficiency of the search results, and satisfy users much better.

Abstract:In order to facilitate rapid development of context-aware applications, there is a need for architectural support in the entire context processing flow, and improved programming abstractions that ease the prototyping. In this paper, a toolkit called Semantic Space, is proposed to support rapid prototyping of context-aware applications via a set of programming abstractions on context processing. The functionality encapsulated in the toolkit handles the common, time-consuming and low-level details in context acquisition, aggregation, storage and inference. Architectural design and implementation issues of the Semantic Space toolkit are discussed in detail. Finally, a case study on building a mobile situation aware phone is described to illustrate the validity of our approach and usability of the toolkit.

Abstract:With the increasing development of web service technologies, more and more applications need web services to give strong capabilities. We divide the exsiting information space into two levels - semantic space and information space. It will make the tranditional operations on web services been abstracted from information space level into semantic space level. Through semantic computing and semantic reasoning, it is more effective to implement the service discovering, searching,and composing etc. We give a semantic resource description framework RDF4S and its description document WSDL4S for semantic web service. This paper presents an approach to establish semantic information space model based on WSDL4S document using data mining technologies and ontology technologies. The method constructs a mapping between general information space and semantic information space. A specific case is given to prove the validity of this method at the end of the paper.

Abstract:We present our approach in building WonderDesk - a semantic desktop for resource sharing and management, which is a component of our WonderSpace application and designed to be an e-Science tool. We propose a desktop architecture for resource sharing and management using semantic-enriched RSS model and P2P technology. To enable fine-grained metadata for e-Science, an ontology about resource is presented as basic vocabulary to be used in constructing resource metadata along with RSS. Further, group-specific discipline ontology is proposed to enhance the semantic description of information resource within user group.
