Abstract:Phillips catalyst is still producing several mill ion tons of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) characterized by ultra-broad molecular weigh t distribution and long chain branching, which are ideal for processing, especially, blow mo lding and final applications [1, 2]. But the real physicochemical nature of active sites, initiation and polymerization mechanisms are still open for discussion even after 50 years of great efforts sin ce ts discovery in the early 1950s [3]. In this work, cluster models [4] are constructed to investi gate effect of formaldehyde desorption, surface dehydroxylation and fluorination of silica support n the transformation from ethylene metathesis into polymerization from induction period to polyme rization stage over Phillips catalyst by density functional theory (DFT). It is demonstrated that th e first initiation reaction of the model catalyst and ethylene follows the metallacycle mechanism bas ed on our calculations. When Cr adsorbed with two formaldehyde molecules, chain propagation is totally blocked on account of steric hindrance of oxygen from formaldehyde. And the adso rpti n of formaldehyde with active centers favors to ethylene metathesis and dimerization to p ropylene and butane, respectively. For the cluster model catalyst before dehydroxylation (Cr(I I)-OH), it shows little activity as the reaction energy barriers of dimerization, metathesis and pol ymerization are very high. Dehydroxylation and fluorination of silica support show marvelous i mprovement on the polymerization process after desorption of formaldehyde molecules. The com putational results are perfectly consistent with experimental results [5-8].
