Abstract:Many cold seeps related to gas hydrate have been found in the northern South China Sea. This study is focused on southwestern Dongsha area and Baiyun Sag in the northern South China Sea, where we investigated the formation of the authigenic carbonates and their relation with gas hydrates. The results of the macroscopic description, scanning electronic microscope and X-ray diffraction analyses reveal that these carbonates consist mainly of dolomite, high Mg-calcite, calcite and aragonite, along with small amounts of a detrital fraction of non-carbonate minerals. Their formation is related to the migration and at the seepage of hydrocarbon-rich fluids that promoted the aragonite-dominated carbonate precipitation near or at the sediment surface and the formation of dolomite-dominated carbonates in deeper parts of the sedimentary column. δC values of the southwestern Dongsha area samples vary between -49.21 and -16.77‰ VPDB, showing a clear contribution of methane oxidation to the carbon pool from which the authigenic carbonates where precipitated, and most probably this carbon source corresponds to thermogenic or a mixed source of thermogenic and biogenic methane. The δO values, ranging from 0.82 to 3.72‰ VPDB, indicate that these carbonates are most probably related to destabilization of gas hydrates or resulted from higher temperature fluids. In contrast, the sample from Baiyun Sag exhibits normal seawater carbon and oxygen isotopic values (δC of 2.36‰ VPDB and δO of 0.44‰ VPDB), indicating that this sample is not related to methane seepage but instead to precipitation from normal seawater. The range of δCa values is ranging from 1.21 to 1.55‰ VPDB and they are relatively small throughout the total dataset (normal sea water value is 1.77‰ VPDB). The calcium isotope decreased may be caused by the carbonates formation. The samples that contain mainly dolomite fall into the range of 1.21 to 1.47‰ VPDB. Samples BY-1 and DS-3, which no contain dolomite, have slightly larger values (1.52 and 1.55 ‰ VPDB). The results showed that the dolomites tend to have smaller data values compared to the calcite and aragonite. However, the BY-1 sample has a quite high value compared to other calcites. The results showed that mineral composition maybe affected on calcium isotope fractionation.
