Abstract:This study aims to explore parenting and developmental delays in the understudied context of rural China. A sample of 1,442 18-30 months old toddlers and their caregivers were randomly selected from poverty counties in Shaanxi Province. Results from the Bayley Scales of Infant Development show that the prevalence of motor delays is in the normal range but cognitive delays affect 42% of the sample toddlers. According to responses from primary caregivers, parenting in rural China does not focus on providing a stimulating environment and lacks interactive caregiver-toddler activities, such as reading, singing, or playing. Caregivers who reported that they engaged in these activities had better-performing toddlers. Caregivers also lack confidence in their parenting skills and rarely resort to the public health system for parenting advice.
