Determinants on the Development of Internationalization in Chinese Enterprises: Evidence from Firm-level Survey data

Abstract:Different from developed countries and emerging market economies, internationalization of Chinese enterprises may have its own features. After summarizing the issues like scale distribution, industrial and regional selection of Chinese Outward Direct Investment (ODI), the paper explains the competitive strategies and their determinants of Chinese enterprises during the process of internationalization and development. Based on the analysis, this paper chooses firm scale, internationalized experiences, domestic incentives, and host countries’ incentives as explanatory variables for ODI modes and performances of Chinese enterprises. The results show that internationalized experiences, encouraging policies by Chinese government and the market potentials of host countries are main determinants of ODI modes. It confirms the fact that the development of internationalization of Chinese enterprises is confined with government regulation. Meanwhile, on the performance of internationalization, results show that the internationalized experiences have the biggest impact, which confirms that the accumulation of experience and knowledge will contributes positively on the internationalizing process of Chinese enterprises.
