Abstract:We report exact results on the enumeration of close-packed dimers on a finite kagome lattice with general asymmetric dimer weights under periodic and cylindrical boundary conditions. For symmetric dimer weights, the resulting dimer generating functions reduce to very simple expressions, and we show how the simple expressions can be obtained from the consideration of a spin-variable mapping.

Abstract:Reviews in Mathematical Physics, Ahead of Print. We give a complete classification of topological field theories with reflection structure and spin-statistics in one and two spacetime dimensions. Our answers can be naturally expressed in terms of an internal fermionic symmetry group [math], which is different from the spacetime structure group. Fermionic groups encode symmetries of systems with fermions and time-reversing symmetries. We show that 1-dimensional topological field theories with reflection structure and spin-statistics are classified by finite-dimensional Hermitian representations of [math]. In spacetime dimension 2 we give a classification in terms of strongly [math]-graded stellar Frobenius algebras. Our proofs are based on the cobordism hypothesis. Along the way, we develop some useful tools for the computation of homotopy fixed points of 2-group actions on bicategories.

Abstract:We study the dimer model for a planar bipartite graph N embedded in a disk, with boundary vertices on the boundary of the disk. Counting dimer configurations with specified boundary conditions gives a point in the totally non‐negative Grassmannian. Considering pairing probabilities for the double‐dimer model gives rise to Grassmann analogs of Rhoades and Skandera's Temperley–Lieb immanants. The same problem for the (probably novel) triple‐dimer model gives rise to the combinatorics of Kuperberg's webs and Grassmann analogs of Pylyavskyy's web immanants. This draws a connection between the square move of plabic graphs (or urban renewal of planar bipartite graphs), and Kuperberg's square reduction of webs. Our results also suggest that canonical‐like bases might be applied to the dimer model. We furthermore show that these functions on the Grassmannian are compatible with restriction to positroid varieties. Namely, our construction gives bases for the degree 2 and degree 3 components of the homogeneous coordinate ring of a positroid variety that are compatible with the cyclic group action.

Abstract:In this paper we continue our consideration of closed-packed dimers on the kagome lattice. Using the Pfaffian approach we evaluate the correlation between dimers on two lattice edges. It is found that the correlation is extremely short-ranged in the case of symmetric dimers weights. Explicit expressions for the nonvanishing correlations are obtained for two dimers in the interior of a large lattice. We also describe a Grassmannian functional integral approach, and use it to evaluate the dimer generating function and correlation functions.
2D Fermions and Statistical Mechanics: Critical Dimers and Dirac Fermions in a background gauge field

Abstract:In the limit of the lattice spacing going to zero, we consider the dimer model on isoradial graphs in the presence of singular $SL(N,\mathbb{C})$ gauge fields flat away from a set of punctures. We consider the cluster expansion of this twisted dimer partition function show it matches an analogous cluster expansion of the 2D Dirac partition function in the presence of this gauge field. The latter is often referred to as a tau function. This reproduces and generalizes various computations of Dubédat (J. Eur. Math. Soc. 21 (2019), no. 1, pp. 1-54). In particular, both sides' cluster expansion are matched up term-by-term and each term is shown to equal a sum of a particular holomorphic integral and its conjugate. On the dimer side, we evaluate the terms in the expansion using various exact lattice-level identities of discrete exponential functions and the inverse Kasteleyn matrix. On the fermion side, the cluster expansion leads us to two novel series expansions of tau functions, one involving the Fuschian representation and one involving the monodromy representation.

Abstract:The web trace theorem of Douglas, Kenyon, Shi expands the twisted Kasteleyn determinant in terms of traces of webs. We generalize this theorem to higher genus surfaces and expand the twisted Kasteleyn matrices corresponding to spin structures on the surface, analogously to the rank-1 case of Cimasoni, Reshetikhin. In the process of the proof, we give an alternate geometric derivation of the planar web trace theorem, relying on the spin geometry of embedded loops and a `racetrack construction' used to immerse loops in the blowup graph on the surface.

Exact Spin Liquid Ground States of the Quantum Dimer Model on the Square and Honeycomb Lattices

Abstract:We study a generalized quantum hard-core dimer model on the square and honeycomb lattices, allowing for first and second neighbor dimers. At generalized Rokhsar-Kivelson points, the exact ground states can be constructed, and ground-state correlation functions can be equated to those of interacting ($1+1$)-dimensional Grassmann fields. When the concentration of second neighbor dimers is small, the ground-state correlations are shown to be short ranged corresponding to a (gaped) spin liquid phase. On a 2-torus, the ground states exhibit fourfold topological degeneracy. On a finite cylinder we have found a dramatic even-odd effect depending on the circumference and propose that this can be used as a numerical diagnostic of gapped spin-liquid phases, more generally.

Abstract:The monopole-dimer model is a signed variant of the monomer-dimer model which has determinantal structure. We extend the monopole-dimer model for planar graphs (Math. Phys. Anal. Geom., 2015) to Cartesian products thereof and show that the partition function of this model can be expressed as a determinant of a generalised signed adjacency matrix. We then show that the partition function is independent of the orientations of the planar graphs so long as the orientations are Pfaffian. When these planar graphs are bipartite, we show that the computation of the partition function becomes especially simple. We then give an explicit product formula for the partition function of three-dimensional grid graphs a la Kasteleyn and Temperley--Fischer, which turns out to be fourth power of a polynomial when all grid lengths are even. Finally, we generalise this product formula to $d$ dimensions, again obtaining an explicit product formula. We conclude with a discussion on asymptotic formulas for the free energy and monopole densities.

Dimer face polynomials in knot theory and cluster algebras

Abstract:The set of perfect matchings of a connected bipartite plane graph $G$ has the structure of a distributive lattice, as shown by Propp, where the partial order is induced by the height of a matching. In this article, our focus is the dimer face polynomial of $G$, which is the height generating function of all perfect matchings of $G$. We connect the dimer face polynomial on the one hand to knot theory, and on the other to cluster algebras. We show that certain dimer face polynomials are multivariate generalizations of Alexander polynomials of links, highlighting another combinatorial view of the Alexander polynomial. We also show that an arbitrary dimer face polynomial is an $F$-polynomial in the cluster algebra whose initial quiver is dual to the graph $G$. As a result, we recover a recent representation theoretic result of Bazier-Matte and Schiffler that connects $F$-polynomials and Alexander polynomials, albeit from a very different, dimer-based perspective. As another application of our results, we also show that all nonvanishing Plücker coordinates on open positroid varieties are cluster monomials.

Abstract:The dimer tiling problem asks in how many ways can the edges of a graph be covered by dimers so that each site is covered once. In the special case of a planar graph, this problem has a solution in terms of a free fermionic field theory. We rediscover and explore an expression for the number of coverings of an arbitrary graph by arbitrary objects in terms of an interacting fermionic field theory first proposed by Samuel. Generalizations of the dimer tiling problem, which we call `dimer piling problems,' demand that each site be covered N times by indistinguishable dimers. Our field theory provides a solution of these problems in the large-N limit. We give a similar path integral representation for certain lattice coloring problems.

Abstract:We consider nine geometric systems: Miquel dynamics, P-nets, integrable cross-ratio maps, discrete holomorphic functions, orthogonal circle patterns, polygon recutting, circle intersection dynamics, (corrugated) pentagram maps and the short diagonal hyperplane map. Using a unified framework, for each system we prove an explicit expression for the solution as a function of the initial data; more precisely, we show that the solution is equal to the ratio of two partition functions of an oriented dimer model on an Aztec diamond whose face weights are constructed from the initial data. Then, we study the Devron property (Glick in J Geom Phys 87:161–189, 2015), which states the following: if the system starts from initial data that is singular for the backwards dynamics, this singularity is expected to reoccur after a finite number of steps of the forwards dynamics. Again, using a unified framework, we prove this Devron property for all of the above geometric systems, for different kinds of singular initial data. In doing so, we obtain new singularity results and also known ones (Glick in J Geom Phys 87:161–189, 2015; Yao in Glick's conjecture on the point of collapse of axis-aligned polygons under the pentagram maps (2014). Preprint arXiv:1410.7806). Our general method consists in proving that these nine geometric systems are all related to the Schwarzian octahedron recurrence (dSKP equation), and then to rely on the companion paper (Affolter et al. in Comb Theory 3(2), 2023), where we study this recurrence in general, prove explicit expressions and singularity results.

Spinning Partial Waves for Scattering Amplitudes in $d$ Dimensions

Abstract:Partial wave decomposition is one of the main tools within the modern S-matrix studies. We present a method to compute partial waves for $2\to2$ scattering of spinning particles in arbitrary spacetime dimension. We identify partial waves as matrix elements of the rotation group with definite covariance properties under a subgroup. This allows to use a variety of techniques from harmonic analysis in order to construct a novel algebra of weight-shifting operators. All spinning partial waves are generated by the action of these operators on a set of known scalar seeds. The text is accompanied by a {\it Mathematica} notebook to automatically generate partial waves. These results pave the way to a systematic studies of spinning S-matrix bootstrap and positivity bounds.

Abstract:We study a model of fully-packed dimer configurations (or perfect matchings) on a bipartite periodic graph that is two-dimensional but not planar. The graph is obtained from $\mathbb Z^2$ via the addition of an extensive number of extra edges that break planarity (but not bipartiteness). We prove that, if the weight $\lambda$ of the non-planar edges is small enough, a suitably defined height function scales on large distances to the Gaussian Free Field with a $\lambda$-dependent amplitude, that coincides with the anomalous exponent of dimer-dimer correlations. Because of non-planarity, Kasteleyn's theory does not apply: the model is not integrable. Rather, we map the model to a system of interacting lattice fermions in the Luttinger universality class, which we then analyze via fermionic Renormalization Group methods.

Abstract:In this paper we develop a general approach to dimer models analogous to Krichever's scheme in the theory of integrable systems. We start with a Riemann surface and the simplest generic meromorphic functions on it and demonstrate how to obtain integrable dimer models. These are dimer models on doubly periodic bipartite graphs with quasi-periodic positive weights. Dimer models with periodic weights and Harnack curves are recovered as a special case. This generalization from Harnack curves to general M-curves leads to transparent algebro-geometric structures. In particular explicit formulas for the Ronkin function and surface tension as integrals of meromorphic differentials on M-curves are obtained. Furthermore we describe the variational principle for the height function in the quasi-periodic case. Based on Schottky uniformizations of Riemann surfaces we present concrete computational results including computing the weights and sampling dimer configurations with them. The computational results are in complete agreement with the theoretical predictions.

Exact Solution of Close-Packed Dimers on the Kagomé Lattice

Abstract:It is well known that exact enumerations of close-packed dimers can be carried out for two-dimensional lattices. While details of results are now known for most lattices, due to the unique nature of the lattice structure, there has been no complete analysis for the kagomé lattice. Here we derive the close-form expression (13) ln(4xyz) for the free energy of close-packed dimers on the kagomé lattice, where x , y , and z are dimer weights. We use two different approaches: the Kasteleyn method of evaluating a Pfaffian and an alternative vertex model formulation. Both methods lead to the same final expression. The correlation function between two dimers at a distance equal or greater than two lattice spacings is found to vanish identically.
Near-critical dimers and massive SLE

Abstract:We consider the dimer model on the square and hexagonal lattices with doubly periodic weights. The purpose of this paper is threefold: (a) we establish a rigourous connection with the massive SLE$_2$ constructed by Makarov and Smirnov (and recently revisited by Chelkak and Wan); (b) we show that the convergence takes place in arbitrary bounded domains subject to Temperleyan boundary conditions, and that the scaling limit is universal; and (c) we prove conformal covariance of the scaling limit. For this we introduce an inhomogeneous near-critical dimer model, corresponding to a drift for the underlying random walk which is a smoothly varying vector field or alternatively to an inhomogeneous mass profile. When the vector field derives from a log-convex potential we prove that the corresponding loop-erased random walk has a universal scaling limit. Our techniques rely on an exact discrete Girsanov identity on the triangular lattice which may be of independent interest. We complement our results by stating precise conjectures making connections to a generalised Sine-Gordon model at the free fermion point.

Abstract:With a graph $G=(V,E)$ we associate a collection of non-negative real weights $\cup_{v\in V}{\lambda_{i,v}:1\leq i \leq m} \cup \cup_{uv \in E} {\lambda_{ij,uv}:1\leq i \leq j \leq m}$. We consider the probability distribution on ${f:V\rightarrow{1,...,m}}$ in which each $f$ occurs with probability proportional to $\prod_{v \in V}\lambda_{f(v),v}\prod_{uv \in E}\lambda_{f(u)f(v),uv}$. Many well-known statistical physics models, including the Ising model with an external field and the hard-core model with non-uniform activities, can be framed as such a distribution. We obtain an upper bound, independent of $G$, for the partition function (the normalizing constant which turns the assignment of weights on $\{f:V\rightarrow{1,...,m\}}$ into a probability distribution) in the case when $G$ is a regular bipartite graph. This generalizes a bound obtained by Galvin and Tetali who considered the simpler weight collection $\{\lambda_i:1 \leq i \leq m\} \cup \{\lambda_{ij}:1 \leq i \leq j \leq m\}$ with each $\lambda_{ij}$ either 0 or 1 and with each $f$ chosen with probability proportional to $\prod_{v \in V}\lambda_{f(v)}\prod_{uv \in E}\lambda_{f(u)f(v)}$. Our main tools are a generalization to list homomorphisms of a result of Galvin and Tetali on graph homomorphisms and a straightforward second-moment computation.
The Schwarzian octahedron recurrence (dSKP equation) I: explicit solutions

Abstract:We prove an explicit expression for the solutions of the discrete Schwarzian octahedron recurrence, also known as the discrete Schwarzian KP equation (dSKP), as the ratio of two partition functions. Each one counts weighted oriented dimer configurations of an associated bipartite graph, and is equal to the determinant of a Kasteleyn matrix. This is in the spirit of Speyer's result on the dKP equation, or octahedron recurrence [Spe07]. One consequence is that dSKP has zero algebraic entropy, meaning that the growth of the degrees of the polynomials involved is only polynomial. There are cancellations in the partition function, and we prove an alternative, cancellation free explicit expression involving complementary trees and forests. Using all of the above, we show several instances of the Devron property for dSKP, i.e., that certain singularities in initial data repeat after a finite number of steps. This has many applications for discrete geometric systems and is the subject of the companion paper [AdTM22]. We also prove limit shape results analogous to the arctic circle of the Aztec diamond. Finally, we discuss the combinatorics of all the other octahedral equations in the classification of Adler, Bobenko and Suris [ABS12].
