Abstract:Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) represents the most common urologic disease among elderly males and has been a significant health concern in the aging society 1 . The pathogenesis of BPH remains largely unresolved. Several recent studies have shown that BPH is frequently associated with chronic inflammatory infiltrates that are mainly composed of T and B lymphoid cells and macrophages. Proinflammatory cytokine interleukins (IL-1, IL-2, IL-6, IL-8, IL-15 and IL-17) can be found. Prostatic epithelial cells and stromal cells express members of the toll-like receptor family and are capable of recognizing foreign incoming antigens 2 .
