Abstract:Tangible Tetris is a mixed-reality interactive game allowing play with a physical transformable tetromino in a virtual playfield. The extension from game world to the physical brings plenty of new characteristics, strategies and fun to the classic game, as well as more possibilities in interactive art.

Abstract:In this paper we present Tangible light, a simple tangible interface that use behavioral and emotional metaphor to convey meaning in its interaction design. Our purpose is to take advantage of natural physical metaphor to achieve a heightened legibility and seamlessness of interaction between people and information. At the same time we attempts to make control system invisible with embedded sensors. Advances in sensor technology have provided novel approach for user to interact with daily used technical device. Rather than issuing commands to a object via multi-purpose and abstract buttons the way is designed for more nuanced and application-specific approaches. So here we explore the coupling of emotion and action in an interface designed for metaphor and simplicity while manipulate lights as an instance.

Abstract:"Like poles repel, unlike poles attract" is a fundamental principle of magnetism commonly used in instantaneous haptic interaction. Through the assembly design of basic five magnets, MagneChase creates a potential barrier between repulsion and attraction. This allows MagneChase modules to change the direction of their interacting force when brought closer. Applying this interaction principle, we provide application examples of kinetic roleplay to enhance tangible play experiences. A preliminary user study suggests that children were captivated by the magnetic phenomenon and derived pleasure from engaging with MagneChase. We also discuss the potential for MagneChase as a tangible kit to promote enlightenment learning in gameplay.

Abstract:The tangram is a jigsaw-like traditional Chinese art form rich in wittiness and expressiveness. However, there is an absence of efficient support to create animations for children and novice users after designing tangram characters. Thus, we present TangramTheatre, a performance-driven animation tool that combines both creation and animation of physical and virtual characters. TangramTheatre allows users to create characters using seven physical tangram pieces as what they do in real tangram games and then edit animations of these characters. In this paper we present our proof of concept prototype. A preliminary study was conducted to direct a future empirical study with children. The results show that all of the participants express great interests in TangramTheatre.

Cube2Pipes : Investigating Hybrid Gameplay Using AR and a Tangible 3D Puzzle

Abstract:We present our game, Cube2Pipes, as an attempt to investigate a unique gameplay design where we use a tangible 3D spatial puzzle, in the form of a 2X2 Rubik's Cube, as an interface to a tabletop mobile augmented reality (AR) game. The game interface adapts to user movement and interaction with both virtual and tangible elements via computer vision based tracking. This game can be seen as an instance of generic interactive hybrid systems as it involves interaction with both virtual and real, tangible elements. We present a thorough user evaluation about various aspects of the gameplay in order to answer the question as to whether hybrid gameplay involving both real and virtual interfaces and elements is more captivating and preferred by users, than standard (baseline) gameplay with only virtual elements. We use multiple industry standard user study questionnaires to try and answer this question. We also try to determine whether the game facilitates understanding of the spatial moves required to solve a Rubik's Cube, and the efficacy of a tangible puzzle interface to a tabletop AR game.

Abstract:In this paper, we present the design of bidirectional tangible interfaces in a tabletop computing platform. These interfaces allow users to perform natural gestures and perceive physical feedback. Considering the design issues, we implement two bidirectional tangible interface prototypes that can provide kinetic and shape-shifting feedback to users. Finally, we present a series applications using such interfaces in different application domains. The exploratory work shows possibilities of applying bidirectional tangible interfaces in interactive and ubiquitous computing systems.

Our system called “Touch-Space” is an embodied (ubiquitous, tangible, and social) computing based mixed reality (MR) game space which regains the social aspects of traditional game plays. Abstract:With the advancement of virtual reality (VR) technology, virtual displays have become integral to how museums, galleries, and other tourist destinations present their collections to the public. However, the current lack of immersion in virtual reality displays limits the user's ability to experience and appreciate its aesthetics. This paper presents a case study of a creative approach taken by a tourist attraction venue in developing a physical network system that allows visitors to enhance VR's aesthetic aspects based on environmental parameters gathered by external sensors. Our system was collaboratively developed through interviews and sessions with twelve stakeholder groups interested in art and exhibitions. This paper demonstrates how our technological advancements in interaction, immersion, and visual attractiveness surpass those of earlier virtual display generations. Through multimodal interaction, we aim to encourage innovation on the Web and create more visually appealing and engaging virtual displays. It is hoped that the greater online art community will gain fresh insight into how people interact with virtual worlds as a result of this work.

Abstract:Presented in this paper is an immersive and interactive entertainment environment which integrates multi-projector tiled display wall and motion tracking. Calibration methods are proposed for the geometry alignment and color consistency of the tiled display wall, achieving immersive visual experience. To track a player's motion, two markers are clung to the left and right leg, and a robust motion tracking algorithm is designed to obtain the player's moving direction and speed from video streams captured by a web camera. The resulted parameters are finally used to control the avatar in virtual scene on the display wall. The system prototype is featured with low-cost devices, easy and scalable installation, fast calibration and real-time tracking, which provides a natural human-computer interaction environment.
Tangiball: Foot-Enabled Embodied Tangible Interaction with a Ball in Virtual Reality

Abstract:Interaction with tangible user interfaces (TUIs) in virtual reality (VR) is known to offer several benefits in terms of user experience. Incorporating identical-formed tangible objects for foot-enabled embodied interaction in VR is not a well-researched area. To address this gap, in this study, we explored foot-enabled embodied interaction in VR through a room-scale tangible soccer game (Tangiball). Users interacted with a physical ball with their feet in real time by seeing its virtual counterpart inside a VR head mounted display (HMD). Tangiball included a custom-built transparent physical ball, inside which motion trackers were secured using custom 3D-printed attachments. A between-subjects user study was performed with 40 participants, in which Tangiball was compared with the control condition of foot-enabled embodied interaction with a purely virtual ball. The results revealed that tangible interaction improved user performance and presence significantly, while no difference in terms of motion sickness was detected between the tangible and virtual versions. This paper discusses the development and evaluation of Tangiball along with implications of the user study results.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a new immersive first-person shooting (FPS) game. Our system provides an intuitive way for the users to interact with the virtual world by physically moving around the real world and aiming freely with tangible objects. Abstract:We present a novel gestural interface for an educational 3D construction game that helps children practice and learn spatial reasoning skills. Previous research shows that having well-developed spatial reasoning skills is crucial to the success in the STEM fields. Our game requires the player to create a number of 3D target objects by moving, rotating, and assembling smaller pieces in the right way through a gestural interface. The gestures were designed with enhancing the user experience and effectiveness of learning in mind, by having a congruent mapping between hand gestures and spatial operations. The initial results of the preliminary study we conducted with the children show that the interface has the potential to be used for practicing spatial reasoning skills with the game. We also discuss how the study can lead to the development of a theoretical framework for designing gestural interfaces for educational games that leverage the benefit of embodied interactions.

Abstract:Tangible interaction with customized products integrating sensors and actuators recently grows into an interdisciplinary research area in computer graphics and human-robot interaction (e.g., [Groeger et al. 2016; Yu et al. 2018]). In this paper, we introduce tangible interaction into 3D printed modular robots. Our user study demonstrates that interacting with our robots can effectively improve human spatial ability, which plays an important role during a person's development in science, technology, engineering or math (STEM).

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss a novel approach to multimodal input design in Tangible User Interface (TUI). We present a prototype Bubble Journey, a game platform where users control the avatar in flash game by blowing a real handle. This computer game was combined multimodal input tool embedded sensor, which augment experience of user's (children's) five senses and body into game's digital world with previous experience in daily life. Sensor embodied in multimodal input tool can convert data of sounds and movements produced by users (children) into digital signals to manipulate the virtual characters' performance in the game.

Abstract:Human Pacman is an interactive role-playing game that envisions to bring the computer gaming experience to a new level of emotional and sensory gratification by setting the real world as a playground. This is a physical fantasy game integrated with human-social and mobile-gaming that emphasizes on collaboration and competition between players. By setting the game in a wide outdoor area, natural human-physical movements have become an integral part of the game. Pacmen and Ghosts are now human players in the real world experiencing mixed reality visualization from the wearable computers on them. Virtual cookies and actual physical objects axe incorporated to provide novel experiences of seamless transitions between real and virtual worlds and tangible human computer interface respectively. We believe Human Pacman is pioneering a new form of gaming that anchors on physicality, mobility, social interaction, and ubiquitous computing.

Abstract:Mobile phones are becoming de facto pervasive devices for people's daily use. This demonstration illustrates a new interaction, Tilt & Touch, to enable a smart phone to be a 3D controller. It exploits capacitive touchscreen and built-in MEMS motion sensors. When people want to navigate in a virtual reality environment on a large display, they can tilt the phone for viewpoint transforming, touch the phone screen for avatar moving, and pinch screen for viewing camera zooming. The virtual objects in the virtual reality environment can be rotated accordingly by tilting the phone.

Abstract:Mixed reality applications can provide users with enhanced interaction experiences by integrating virtual and real world objects in a mixed environment. Through the mixed reality interface, a more realistic and immersive control style is achieved compared to the traditional keyboard and mouse input devices. The interface proposed in this paper consists of a stereo camera, which tracks the user's hands and fingers robustly and accurately in the 3D space. To enable a physically realistic experience in the interaction, a physics engine is adopted for the simulating the physics of virtual object manipulation. The objects can be picked up and tossed with physical characteristics, such as gravity and collisions which occur in the real world. Detection and interaction in our system is fully computer-vision based, without any markers or additional sensors. We demonstrate this gesture-based interface using two mixed reality game implementations: finger fishing, in which a player can simulate fishing for virtual objects with his/her fingers as in a real environment, and Jenga, which is a simulation of the well-known tower building game. A user study is conducted and reported to demonstrate the accuracy, effectiveness and comfort of using this interactive interface.
