Abstract:The generation and transport of laser-driven fast electrons in overdense plasmas is a crucial issue for the success of the fast ignition approach to inertial confinement fusion (ICF), the optimization of secondary radiation sources and the acceleration of ions by sheath fields. The injection of the fast electron beam and the role of selfgenerated resistive magnetic fields (B-fields) at the edges of the beam, pinching the beam, are particularly important to the fast ignition scheme. Whether the beam collimation occurs or not is highly dependent on the fast electron beam source divergence. The criteria, in terms of fast electron beam properties, required to achieve ignition also depend on the electron beam divergence.
