Abstract:The methodology of short-term traffic flow forecasting is presented in this paper based on Elman neural network, which sets sub-network as objectives. To simplify road network analysis, and to reduce dimension of solution space, this paper extracts space characteristics of traffic flow and split the road network more scientific and rational based on general space distance. Then, it introduces Elman neural network to forecast traffic flow of multisections in the mad network whose input vector is constructed by time series of traffic flow. In the last section, the methodology is tested using traffic flow data from the road network, which is compared to the method of BP neural network. The methodology can split the road network into several sub-networks satisfying short-term forecasting demand, and short-term traffic flow forecasting of the road network is realized by Elman neural network. The results are proved to be super to the method of BP neural network.

Abstract:To improve the short term traffic prediction precision, this paper proposes an improved Elman neural network (ELMNN) model for the prediction work. The model input includes two parts: the measured flow data and the theoretical flow data obtained by traffic occupancy and speed. Furthermore, in order to capture the inner regularity of the time series data, the theoretical flow data and the measured flow data are both reconstructed using a phase space reconstruction method. Finally, the reconstructed data are put into the improved ELMNN model, which is developed by employing the mind evolution algorithm (MEA). Compared with the original models, the results of the case study show that the proposed model can obviously improve the prediction accuracy.

Abstract:Daily traffic flow forecasting is critical in advanced traffic management and can improve the efficiency of fixed-time signal control. This paper presents a traffic prediction method for one whole day using a deep neural network based on historical traffic flow data and contextual factor data. The main idea is that traffic flow within a short time period is strongly correlated with the starting and ending time points of the period together with a number of other contextual factors, such as day of week, weather, and season. Therefore, the relationship between the traffic flow values within a given time interval and a combination of contextual factors can be mined from historical data. First, a predictor was trained using a multi-layer supervised learning algorithm to mine the potential relationship between traffic flow data and a combination of key contextual factors. To reduce training times, a batch training method was proposed. Finally, a Seattle-based case study shows that, overall, the proposed method outperforms the conventional traffic prediction method in terms of prediction accuracy. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Short-term traffic flow prediction is the basis of dynamic traffic control and guidance. In this article, a new fore- casting method, which combines fuzzy C-mean clustering and neural network techniques, is used to forecast short-term (traffic) flow. Based on the same real-time data, the forecasting results of this method are computed, and compared to other methods, e.g., Bp neural network and fuzzy neural network. The compute outcomes show that this method can produce (more) exact prediction results than other two methods.

Abstract:Traffic flow prediction is to judge future traffic flow trends according to the current and historical data because traffic flow data are unperodical,nonlinear and stochastic.The nonlinear fitting capability and inference mechanisms based on neuro-fuzzy inference networks apply adaptive neuro-fuzzy networks to traffic flow prediction.Three forms of one-order neuro-fuzzy inference networks were designed to calculate and predict the unperiodical traffic flow by using the data sampled for a 30-second time interval and a two-minute time interval respectively,the results of which were compared with the prediction results of the BP neural networks with various hidden layers.The comparison indicates that adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference networks need only simple calculation and have obvious advantages for traffic flow trend prediction.

Abstract:Traffic flow guidance system(TFGS) plays an important role in intelligent transportation system(ITS).The prediction of traffic flow is the core issue of TFGS.Hence,how to predict traffic flow amount online is the key to TFGS.Based on the properties of traffic flows,this paper analyzes the causes resulting in error ones during collecting transportation data,and proposes the methods of handling these errors.Furthermore,the Elman neural network is utilized to model the forecast of the traffic flow for ITS.The above system is built by using C# and Matlab,and the Elman neural network is used to forecast the traffic flow.Moreover,the predicted results are intuitively shown by using the chart.The application results show that the proposed method is effective for the prediction of traffic flow and the prediction accuracy can meet the actual requirements.

Abstract:Short-term traffic flow prediction is an essential component of urban traffic management and information systems. This paper presents a new short-term freeway traffic flow prediction model based on combined neural network approach. This model consists of two modules: a self-organizing feature map neural network and an Elman neural network. The former classifies the traffic conditions in a day into six patterns, and the later specifies the relationship between input and output to provide the prediction value. The inputs of the Elman neural network model include three kinds of data: the several time series of the prediction location, the historic data of the predictive time interval in the same weekdays, the time series of the adjacent location. The performances of the combined neural network model are validated using the real observation data from 3rd ring freeway in Beijing.

Abstract:As we all know, to predict the short-term traffic flow accurately and efficiently is the premise and key of traffic management and control. Based on these existing study, this paper selected BP neural network model in which the traffic flow difference was taken as the input parameter, applied the thought of dynamic rolling prediction to design a new short-term traffic flow prediction method, and wrote the corresponding program. Then using the actual observation data of traffic flow presented the model structure, thought and calculation steps of this new method. The results show this method is feasibility, reliability, and of some practical value.

Abstract:To deal with the deficiencies of the existing prediction models based on dynamic recurrent neural network, considering the characteristics of the traffic flow itself such as complexity, nonlinearity and uncertainty, a short-term traffic flow prediction method using Elman neural network with variable gain was proposed. The real-time updates of the network were achieved by introducing a variable gain factor based on the real-time error analysis. The method was verified by the field measured data from Renmin Street, Changchun City. The results show that comparing with the existing Elman network based models the proposed method is superior on the aspects of convergence time and prediction accuracy.

Abstract:Short-term forecast of urban traffic flow is very important to intelligent transportation. Although the conventional methods have some advantages, to some extent, in improving the traffic forecast’s precision, it is still hard to achieve high accuracy. In this paper, we propose a short-term traffic flow forecasting method, which is based on the hybrid particle swarm optimization-neural network (HPSO-NN) with error compensation mechanism. In HPSO-NN, the hybrid PSO algorithm is employed to train the structures and parameters of the feed-forward advanced neural network, while the error compensation mechanism is employed to improve the accuracy. HPSO-NN is used to forecast the vehicle velocity in Shanghai North-South Viaduct. Experimental results show that the HPSO-NN, compared with the auto-regressive and moving average (ARMA) model, can forecast traffic flow with a higher accuracy. What’s more, we have also found that HPSO-NN with error compensation mechanism has better performance than that of HPSO-NN alone.

Abstract:Accurate prediction of peak-hour traffic flow is crucial for congestion management. Neural network models have varying performance in different domains, limiting their effectiveness in traffic data. To address this, we propose the SSA-BiLSTM-BP-Elman ensemble model. It integrates bi-directional long short-term memory (BiLSTM), back propagation (BP) neural network, and Elman network. The model uses the sparrow search algorithm (SSA) to optimize the weight distribution to improve the prediction accuracy. Initially, the BiLSTM, BP, and Elman models are parameter-optimized by the Bayesian approach. SSA then assigns unique weights to each model based on the characteristics of the extracted data features. Results from an application to UK high-speed traffic flow data show that SSA significantly improves the accuracy of model predictions. This integrated model effectively utilizes the strengths of each model by assigning appropriate weighting coefficients by SSA, thus improving the overall prediction performance.

Abstract:Traffic flow (TF) prediction is an important and yet a challenging task in transportation systems, since the TF involves high nonlinearities and is affected by many elements. Recently, neural networks have attracted much attention for TF prediction, but they are commonly black boxes with complex architectures and difficult to be interpreted, e.g., the contributions of specific traffic elements are not explicit, hardly providing informative guidance. In this paper, we aim at addressing more interpretable short-term TF prediction with joint consideration to high accuracy, and thus introduces a pragmatic method by applying the efficient hinging hyperplanes neural network (EHHNN) simply built upon sparse neuron connections. In the proposed method, different traffic factors are incorporated into the inputs, including their spatial-temporal information. Besides the pursuit of accuracy, we further extend the ANOVA decomposition of EHHNNs to the interpretation analysis with specifications to traffic data, in which the contributions concerning specific traffic variables are detected quantitatively. As such, the proposed method firstly applies the EHHNN to filter out more important traffic variables for dimensionality reduction while maintaining accurate prediction. Then, variable interpretation analysis is performed from different perspectives, e.g. to quantitatively investigate the influence of traffic factors and also their spatial-temporal impacts. Therefore, a predictor and an analyzing tool can both be attained for the TF by exerting the flexibility and extending the interpretability of EHHNNs, which is promising to provide informative guidance to future traffic control. Numerical experiments verify the effectiveness and potential of the proposed method in TF prediction and analysis.

Abstract:To improve the management ability of expressway service area and formulate strategies for traffic flow changes in time, a short-term traffic flow prediction model is pro-posed. Firstly, cleaning the extracted data according to the rules and constructing four kinds of features (temporal, spatial, statistical and external factors). Then, a short-term traffic flow prediction model WADNN (wide attention and deep neural networks) is constructed. In the model, LSTM (long and short-term memory neural network), CNN (convolution neural network) and self-attention mechanism are used to extract different features respectively. In addition, the STL (Seasonal-Trend decomposition procedure based on LOESS) algorithm is used to decompose the traffic flow to fit the trend better. For the three decomposed components, the OMS (optimal model selection) operation is carried out, the prediction of each component is added to obtain the final predicted value, and the model effect is measured according to the RMSE (root mean square error), MAE (mean absolute error), MAPE (Mean Absolute Percentage Error) and R2 coefficient. Finally, taking an expressway service area as an example, the proposed model is compared with some common models. The results show that the prediction effect of WADNN is better and STL-OMS can further improve the accuracy. (C) 2022 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Accurate real-time prediction of short-term traffic flow is the key technology in traffic control and guidance.Two prediction methods are used to forecast short-term traffic flow:BP neural network prediction method based on L-M algorithm and the prediction method based on chaos time array.Provide the basic principles and concrete prediction step of the methods.Also use the methods to predict a real traffic flow data.The result show that the two prediction methods can be used in the prediction of traffic flow with considerably high accuracy,and the method based on chaos time array is more suitahle for forecasting short-term traffic flow.

Abstract:Traffic flow prediction is important for urban planning and traffic congestion alleviation as well as for intelligent traffic management systems. Due to the periodic characteristics and high fluctuation in short-term periods, it is difficult to accurately estimate future patterns in traffic flow on the urban road network. Thus, to forecast short-term traffic flow, a PSO-Bi-LSTM model based on the combination of Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Bidirectional-Long Short-Term Memory (Bi-LSTM) neural network is developed in this paper. The PSO approach, which searches for the best parameters of a model on a global scale is used and nonlinear variable inertial weights are considered instead of linear weight. Additionally, the Bi-LSTM network prediction model is optimized using the PSO technique, which has the advantages of rapid convergence, high robustness, and large global search ability. To test the performance of the proposed model, traffic flow data has been collected from the Inner Ring Road, South Extension, Delhi, India. The performance of proposed PSO-Bi-LSTM model has been compared with other existing neural network models, e.g., Bi-LSTM, LSTM, Extreme Learning Machine (ELM), Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU), Wavelet Neural Network (WNN), Multilayer perceptron (MLP), and Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA). Experimental findings demonstrated that the proposed PSO-Bi-LSTM model has significantly outperformed the other models in terms of accuracy and stability.

Abstract:Real-time and effective traffic flow prediction has become an important part of intelligent traffic system. It not only helps individuals plan optimal routes, but also benefits transportation managers in making reasonable traffic guidance. An attention-based long short-term memory (ALSTM) network is proposed and applied to predict traffic flow, which considers the temporal correlation and effects of information at each time point. First, a long short-term memory (LSTM) layer is used to capture the features from raw data. Second, the attention mechanism based on the softmax function is utilized to score for attention weights of traffic flow at different time instants. Finally, a regression layer is set at the top of the model for traffic flow prediction. The experiments results show that the proposed ALSTM method for traffic volume prediction is better than traditional models. Moreover, the visualization of attention weights can help us understand the prediction process.

Abstract:This study proposes a short-term traffic flow prediction framework. The vector autoregression (VAR) model based on econometric theory and the CNN-LSTM hybrid neural network model based on deep learning are employed in the analysis. An intrinsic association among traffic variables is first evaluated using the VAR model, and the predictable relationship of these variables is determined. Then the multi-features speed prediction for one spatial location using the CNN-LSTM hybrid neural network model is conducted, the prediction results prove that prediction with multi-feature is better than that with a single feature. Subsequently, several popular deep learning models and other shallow predicted models are proposed to be compared with the constructed CNN-LSTM network model, and the comparison illustrates that the model performance of the developed CNN-LSTM network model is superior to other models in forecasting the short-term traffic flow. Then the multi-feature speed predictions for a group of spatial locations are further conducted using the CNN-LSTM model. The result demonstrates the predictive accuracies are associated with the spatial correlation of traffic flow. Finally, a heatmap is produced to visualize the predicted speed, from which the spatial-temporal traffic condition can be presented clearly. The research results have the potential to be applied to the travel information releasing and traffic congestion management.

Abstract:In a traffic flow prediction based fuzzy neural network,the optimization of the parameters of the nodes is very critical.An improved particle swarm optimization method was used to optimize the fuzzy neural network parameters to improve the precision and speed of vehicle prediction by fuzzy neural networks.Simulation results show that the accuracyof method is faster and accuracy is more accurate than PSO and BP algorithm,and the fuzzy neural network prediction model based on IPSO is an effective method for traffic flow prediction.

Abstract:With the rapid development of information technology, multiple time series forecasting, which is typical of traffic flow forecasting, has become increasingly important in big data analysis. As the cornerstone of intelligent transportation system, traffic flow forecasting has important scientific research value and practical application value for urban traffic operation scheduling, quality and efficiency improvement of logistics transportation industry and public travel planning. Traffic flow prediction is always an important task of intelligent transportation system. Due to the complex temporal and spatial dependence of traffic flow sequence, it is very challenging to construct accurate traffic flow prediction in its ring neural network, graph network and Transformer model. Much of the existing work is based on very good models. Considering the advantages of convolutional networks, such as high computational efficiency and strong feature extraction ability, a traffic flow prediction model based on multi-view spatiotemporal convolution is proposed.
