Abstract:The number of small wireless devices is rapidly increasing, making the radio channel efficiency in limited geographic areas (individual rooms or buildings) an important metric for MAC protocols. Many of these emerging devices have use-cases that are difficult to satisfy with current hardware solutions and channel access methods; for instance device mobility, small energy reserves, and requirements for low cost and small form factors. However, for most of these applications, such as health care monitoring or sensing, feedback to the radio device is unnecessary and unidirectional communication techniques are not only sufficient, but can also be advantageous. We propose an efficient, reliable technique for unidirectional communication, called Transmit Only (TO), that satisfies these requirements while maintaining packet throughput guarantees and reducing energy consumption. In this paper we will demonstrate the feasibility and performance of this kind of highly asymmetric, transmit-only protocol through theoretical, simulated, and experimental results.

Abstract:Transmission collision causes serious performance issues for wireless sensor networks, especially for dense wireless networks with loose links. Conventional medium access control (MAC) protocols use collision avoidance to maintain data transmission. For CSMA protocols, senders always conservatively choose the size of backoff window. However, traditional CSMA-based protocols usually increase the packet delay, in this work, we propose an probability based concurrent transmission protocol for data collection scenario in multi-hop wireless sensor networks. By adjusting the transmission probability of channel competitors, we efficiently reduce packet delays and improves the channel utilization. We evaluate our protocol with extensive experimental simulations, and the results indicate that the proposed protocol improves channel utilization and works well.

Abstract:This paper investigates the downlink transmission through amplify-and-forward relaying in dense smal-cel networks. In a conventional relay transmission scheme, spectral efficiency is decreased because of the half-duplex limit. It is difficult to acquire global channel state information for the transmitters and receivers in a dense network. In this paper, we propose a distributed successive relaying scheme that avoids the half-duplex loss and reduces inter-relay interference of the successive relaying. We analyze the achievable rates for both schemes and their asymptotic performances under a very large relay amounts. The experimental results show the comparative advantage of the proposed scheme.experience.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate physical-layer security in a wireless ad hoc network in which a large number of legitimate transmitter-receiver pairs coexist with randomly distributed eavesdroppers; each legitimate receiver works in either half-duplex (HD) or full-duplex (FD) mode. We aim to increase the number of secure links per unit area in the network of interest by determining the allocation between HD-and FD-mode links. We use tools from stochastic geometry theory and analyze the connection outage probability and the secrecy outage probability for an arbitrary legitimate link by deriving analytical expressions, based on which we then figure out the optimal fraction of FD-mode links that maximizes the area secure link number given a pair of wiretap code rates. We further develop insights into this optimal fraction and derive a closed-form expression for it assuming perfect self-interference cancellation. Numerical results are demonstrated to validate our theoretical findings.

Abstract:This paper considers the transmission of confidential messages over noisy wireless ad hoc networks, where both background noise and interference from concurrent transmitters affect the received signals. For the random networks where the legitimate nodes and the eavesdroppers are distributed as Poisson point processes, we study the secrecy transmission capacity (STC), as well as the connection outage probability and secrecy outage probability, based on the physical layer security. We first consider the basic fixed transmission distance model, and establish a theoretical model of the STC. We then extend the above results to a more realistic random distance transmission model, namely nearest receiver transmission. Finally, extensive simulation and numerical results are provided to validate the efficiency of our theoretical results and illustrate how the STC is affected by noise, connection and secrecy outage probabilities, transmitter and eavesdropper densities, and other system parameters. Remarkably, our results reveal that a proper amount of noise is helpful to increase the secrecy transmission capacity.

Abstract:Currently, massive data communication and computing pose a severe challenge on existing wireless network architecture, from various aspects such as data rate, latency, energy consumption and pricing. Hence, it is of vital importance to investigate active wireless transmission for wireless networks. To this end, we first overview the data rate of wireless active transmission. We then overview the latency of wireless active transmission, which is particularly important for the applications of monitoring services. We further overview the spectral efficiency of the active transmission, which is particularly important for the battery-limited Internet of Things (IoT) networks. After these overviews, we give several critical challenges on the active transmission, and we finally present feasible solutions to meet these challenges. The work in this paper can serve as an important reference to the wireless networks and IoT networks.

Abstract:Mobility is an intrinsic feature that shapes the wireless network nowadays. In this paper, we analyze the packet spreading time, another practical metric for evaluating mobile networks. We mainly focus on the non-relay-assisted information spreading scenario, in which only the source node broadcasts packets to its neighbors. Several single and multiple packet spreading protocols are proposed, and both closed-form expressions and scaling-law results are derived for their spreading times. It is observed that, while the traditional ACK-based multi-packet spreading protocols have to trade off between spreading time and feedback overhead, the broadcast-with-rateless-coding protocol excels in both, revealing its advantage particularly in spreading large-size files.

Abstract:Recent years have witnessed the remarkable development of wireless embedded network systems (WENS) such as cyber-physical systems and sensor networks. Reliable bulk data dissemination is an important building module in WENS, supporting various applications, e.g., remote software update, video distribution. The existing studies often construct network structures to enable time-slotted multi-hop pipelining for data dissemination. However, the adopted transmission mechanism was originally designed for structureless protocols, and thus posing significant challenges on efficient structured data dissemination. In this paper, we investigate the problem of structured bulk data dissemination. Specifically, we propose reliable out-of-order transmission and bursty encoding mechanisms to transmit packets as many as possible in each transmission slot. As a consequence, the resulting transmission protocol (ULTRA) can fully utilize each transmission slot and propagate data in the network as fast as possible. The performance results obtained from both testbed and simulation experiments demonstrate that, compared to the state-of-the-art protocols, ULTRA can greatly enhance the dissemination performance by reducing the dissemination delay by 34.8%. Abstract:The growing popularity of big data and Internet of Things (IoT) applications bring new challenges to the wireless communication community. Wireless transmission systems should more efficiently support the large amount of data traffics from diverse types of information sources. In this article, we introduce a novel data-oriented approach for the design and optimization of wireless transmission strategies. Specifically, we define new performance metrics for individual data transmission session and apply them to compare two popular channel-adaptive transmission strategies. We develop several interesting and somewhat counterintuitive observations on these transmission strategies, which would not be possible with conventional approach. We also present several interesting future research directions that are worth pursuing with the data-oriented approach.

Abstract:With the explosive growth of wireless communications, new types of data transmission and data management technologies are required urgently to meet the increasing popularity of mobile and wireless customers. This dissertation contains researches on novel approaches for data transmission, dissemination, and communication problems, to satisfy new requirements from clients, to improve current system performance, and to optimize existing transmission protocols. The whole project can be divided into two parts. In the first part, we mainly discuss data management, data scheduling, indexing technology, and data transmission problems for Wireless Data Broadcast, a new data dissemination method for wireless and mobile users to retrieve database information. We design a novel and automatic system named SAMBox for data broadcast under asynchronous multi-channel wireless communication environment, including index design, data structure construction, and channel scheduling algorithm, with optimized parameter selection. We then propose several exact algorithms to data scheduling problem for a special kind of database management system: multi-media databases. These algorithms are the first approaches for wireless data broadcast under the fourth generation network with MIMO technology. Next, we give a novel data dissemination algorithm, which saves around 50% energy comparing with current system. This part also includes three approximations for query dissemination in a special type of wireless network, wireless sensor network. In the second part, we focus on the theoretical analysis for data transmission problem over “backbone” network, which is usually represented as connected dominating set (CDS) in a communication network model. The routing protocols rely on such infrastructure can simplify the routing process and improve system performance. Thus it is desirable to choose a minimum CDS for efficiency. We are aiming at constructing a “good” backbone effectively by optimizing the selection strategies innovatively and analyzing the approximation ratio carefully. We provide a constant-factor (10+&epsis;) approximation algorithm for weighted connected dominating set problem, which is much smaller than the existing literature. We prove a better theoretical bound to approximate dominating set using Euler formula. And finally, we give the first polynomial time approximation scheme (PTAS) for d-hop connected dominating set problem.

Abstract:We investigate the physical layer security in cooperative wireless networks where a source (Alice) transmits a confidential message to a destination (Bob) with the help of a cooperative node (Charlie), in the presence of an eavesdropper (Eve). Cooperative transmission is explored to secure communication between Alice and Bob, while ensuring the desired quality of service (QoS) at Charlie's receiver. We provide a transmit design for outage constrained secrecy rate maximization, taking both security and QoS constraints into account. Unlike the conventional cooperative security that adopts a fixed transmission scheme, we propose a mechanism for transmit strategy adaptation with security protection. Specifically, the proposed cooperative transmission is replaced by a cooperative jamming scheme if either security or QoS constraint is not satisfied. Numerical results confirm that our design enables dynamic transmission, and thus is flexible and environment-adaptive.

Abstract:We consider a dual-hop full-duplex relaying system, where the energy constrained relay node is powered by radio frequency signals from the source using the time-switching architecture, both the amplify-and-forward and decode-and-forward relaying protocols are studied. Specifically, we provide an analytical characterization of the achievable throughput of three different communication modes, namely, instantaneous transmission, delay-constrained transmission, and delay tolerant transmission. In addition, the optimal time split is studied for different transmission modes. Our results reveal that, when the time split is optimized, the full-duplex relaying could substantially boost the system throughput compared to the conventional half-duplex relaying architecture for all three transmission modes. In addition, it is shown that the instantaneous transmission mode attains the highest throughput. However, compared to the delay-constrained transmission mode, the throughput gap is rather small. Unlike the instantaneous time split optimization which requires instantaneous channel state information, the optimal time split in the delay-constrained transmission mode depends only on the statistics of the channel, hence, is suitable for practical implementations.

Abstract:In this paper, a wireless multicast scenario with secrecy constraints is considered, where the source wishes to send a common message to two intended destinations in the presence of a passive eavesdropper. One destination is equipped with multiple antennas, and all of the other three nodes are equipped with a single antenna. Different to the conventional direct transmission, we propose a cooperative transmission scheme based on the cooperation between the two destinations. The basic idea is to divide the multicast scenario into two cooperative unicast transmissions at two phases and the two destinations help each other to jam the eavesdropper in turns. Such a cooperative transmission does not require the knowledge of the eavesdropper’s channel state information. Both analytic and numerical results demonstrate that the proposed cooperative scheme can achieve zero-approaching outage probability.
On Transmit-Diversity Based Multicast In Mobile Wireless Networks

Abstract:We investigate the variations of using the different transmit-diversity techniques for multicast in mobile wireless networks. In particular, we propose and study two different schemes using transmit-diversity for mobile multicast. First, we propose the antenna-beamforming-based mobile multicast scheme which derives the transmit antenna weights by formulating/solving an optimization problem to minimize the average Symbol Error Rate (SER) over all multicast receivers. The simulations results show that our proposed beamforming-based scheme achieves lower SER compared with the existing beamforming-based mobile multicast algorithms which either maximize the instantaneous combined Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) averaged over all receivers, or maximize the worst-case instantaneous combined SNR among all multicast receivers. Second, we apply the antenna-selection scheme in mobile multicasting to achieve the low average SER. We identify that the antenna-selection scheme is suitable for the scenario where different receivers/receiver-groups in a multicast session, experiencing different channel qualities, need to receive different error-control data. The analyses and numerical results show that the proposed scheme improves the SER performance through selecting antennas with better channel qualities and can flexibly support various antenna configurations.

Abstract:Future wireless systems need to support diverse big data and Internet of Things (IoT) applications with dramatically different quality of service (QoS) requirements. Novel designs across the protocol stack are required to achieve effective and efficient QoS provision. In this article, we introduce a novel data oriented approach for the design and analysis of advanced wireless transmission technologies. Unlike conventional channel-oriented approach, we propose to optimally design transmission strategies for individual data transmission sessions, considering both the QoS requirement and instantaneous operating environment. The resulting design can effectively satisfy highly stringent performance and efficiency requirements of future applications.

Abstract:Relay transmission can enhance coverage and throughput, whereas it can be vulnerable to eavesdropping attacks due to the additional transmission of the source message at the relay. Thus, whether or not one should use relay transmission for secure communication is an interesting and important problem. In this paper, we consider the transmission of a confidential message from a source to a destination in a decentralized wireless network in the presence of randomly distributed eavesdroppers. The source–destination pair can be potentially assisted by randomly distributed relays. For an arbitrary relay, we derive exact expressions of secure connection probability for both colluding and noncolluding eavesdroppers. We further obtain lower bound expressions on the secure connection probability, which are accurate when the eavesdropper density is small. Using these lower bound expressions, we propose a relay selection strategy to improve the secure connection probability. By analytically comparing the secure connection probability for direct transmission and relay transmission, we address the important problem of whether or not to relay and discuss the condition for relay transmission in terms of the relay density and source–destination distance. These analytical results are accurate in the small eavesdropper density regime.

Abstract:This paper considers a wireless powered communication network, where a multiantenna power beacon (PB) is employed to assist an energy constrained source to establish secure communications with a destination in the presence of multiple eavesdroppers. We propose a two-phase communication protocol termed as accumulate then transmit to enhance network secrecy. In the energy harvesting phase, the PB transfers radio frequency energy to charge the source; then in the information transmission phase, the PB acts as a friendly jammer to protect the source transmission against eavesdropping. We study the dynamic energy state transitions at the source using an energy discretization method and a finite-state Markov chain. Closed-form expressions are derived for connection outage probability, secrecy outage probability, and effective secrecy throughput, with the aim to evaluate both reliability and security of the proposed protocol. Furthermore, numerical results reveal the impacts of various system parameters on the secrecy performance and demonstrate the superior performance of our proposed protocol over an existing scheme.

Abstract:The bottleneck of wireless communication lies in the contradiction between limited spectrum resources and ever-increasing user demand. Multidomain collaboration (MDC) has emerged as a new framework to solve the problem, to some extent, with a great spectrum efficiency improvement. In this article, we introduce the concept of MDC with the help of some intuitive examples. Specifically, the underlying rationale of MDC for increasing transmission capacity is revealed from the perspective of both multiplexing gain and power gain. Cases studies of point-to-point, point-to-multipoint, multipoint-to-point, and multipoint-to-multipoint transmissions are conducted as preliminary evaluations of the performance limits that may be achieved by MDC.
