Abstract:I give my perspective on promising directions for high energy physics in coming years. 1 The Standard Model: Glory and Discontents 1. Our standard model, or core theory, understood to consist of the SU(3)×SU(2)×U(1) gauge theory of strong and electroweak interactions, together with minimally coupled Einstein gravity – the gauge theory of local Lorentz invariance – is a glorious achievement. It provides a firm foundation for chemistry, astrophysics, and all practical forms of engineering. It justifies and fulfills the great reductionist program of understanding the physical world based on precise mathematical understanding of the interactions among a few basic building-blocks. Consider, for example, the direct numerical solution of QCD. Here there are no uncontrolled approximations, no perturbation theory, no cutoff, and no room for fudge-factors. A handful of parameters, inserted into a highly constrained theory of extraordinary symmetry, either will or won’t account for the incredible wealth of measured phenomena in the strong interaction. And it certainly appears that they do. Abstract:In the first part of the paper, I give a low-resolution overview of the current state of particle physics - the triumph of the Standard Model and its discontents. I review and re-endorse the remarkably direct and (to me) compelling argument that existing data, properly interpreted, point toward a unified theory of fundamental particle interactions and toward low-energy supersymmetry as the near-term future of high energy physics as a natural science. I then attempt, as requested, some more "visionary" - i.e. even lower resolution - comments about the farther future. In that spirit, I emphasize the continuing importance of condensed matter physics as a source of inspiration and potential application, in particular for expansion of symmetry concepts, and of cosmology as a source of problems, applications, and perhaps ultimately limitations.

Abstract:John Wheeler’s description of the progression from graduate student to professor as being the passage from knowing everything about nothing to knowing nothing about everything carries over with obvious (and inessential) modifications to the progression from talks at parallel sessions to the conference summary. I feel especially daunted here, after listening to a series of beautiful plenary talks that have already summarized their subject areas, so that I’m reduced to providing a summary of the second order. In order to supply at least a small amount of value added, I’ll try to frame the new developments actually reported at the Conference within the broader context of contemporary physics, and also to indicate a few directions that I feel are important and promising, but which did not get emphasized during the Conference. 1. Abstract:The status of the Standard Model (SM) is reviewed. We emphazize the fact that in spite of the success of the SM for the descrition of the fermionic sector, the status of the bosonic sector (gauge and scalar) suffers from many theoretical deficiencies and from the lack of empirical support. This situation, which leaves room for several types of extensions or alternatives to SM, strongly motivates the pursue of intense efforts for finding hints of New Physics (NP) effects. We present a phenomenological description valid for energies lying below the NP scale. We discuss the indirect constraints established from high precision tests at LEP1, as well as the direct tests that could be performed at future machines

Abstract:Fundamental particle physics is at a cross road. On the one hand the Standard Model successfully accounts for all experimental observations to date. On the other hand the ElectroWeak symmetry breaking mechanism is poorly understood and suggests the existence of new physics within reach of future colliders. Building on LHC experience, a hadron collider using the well established LHC magnet technology in a 90--100km circular ring, can reach the required 50--60TeV energy range and uncover the next layers of reality by the early 2040s.

Abstract:We review ideas relating the breaking of Supersymmetry in de Sitter (dS) space-time to amplitudes in which gravitinos are reflected from the dS horizon. A self consistent evaluation of such amplitudes leads to the estimate $m_{3/2} = K \Lambda^{1/4}$, with a constant $K$ that is not easily calculable. LHC bounds on superpartner masses, plus the structure of low energy effective field theory then imply that there must be new superfields with standard model quantum numbers in the region below $100$ TeV. Only one class of models, the Pyramid Schemes, has been found, which is compatible with one loop coupling unification. They have a new strongly coupled gauge sector with a confinement scale in the multi TeV region. We outline the general predictions of these models, which include Dirac gauginos and a novel solution of the strong CP problem. The models all appear to have a "little hierarchy problem": the expectation value of the standard model Higgs field, and its mass, must be a factor of $10$ or more smaller than the masses of the second Higgs doublet or standard model superpartners. Since all of these models contain uncertainties from the strong coupling physics, as well as the physics of the dS horizon, it is difficult to determine how serious this fine tuning problem is.

Abstract:The bulk of this paper centers around the tension between confinement and freedom in QCD. I discuss how it can be understood heuristically as a manifestation of self-adhesive glue and how it fits within the larger contexts of energy-time uncertainty and $\textit{real virtuality}$. I discuss the possible emergence of $\textit{treeons}$ as a tangible ingredient of (at least) pure gluon $SU(3)$. I propose $\textit{flux channeling}$ as a method to address that and allied questions about triality flux numerically, and indicate how to implement it for electric and magnetic flux in material systems. That bulk is framed with broad-stroke, necessarily selective sketches of the past and possible future of strong interaction physics. At the end, I've added an expression of gratitude for my formative experience at the Erice school, in 1973.

Predictions of a fundamental statistical picture

Abstract:The discovery of a Higgs boson at the electroweak scale appears to point toward supersymmetry, as the most likely mechanism for protecting a scalar boson mass from enormous radiative corrections. The earlier discovery of neutrino masses similarly appears to point toward grand unification of nongravitational forces, which permits (for neutrinos) Majorana masses, Dirac masses, and a seesaw mechanism to drive the observed masses down to low values. A third major discovery, cosmic acceleration suggesting a relatively tiny cosmological constant, appears to point toward truly revolutionary new physics. Many other problems and mysteries also indicate a need for fresh ideas at the most fundamental level. Here a picture is proposed in which standard physics and its extensions are obtained (through a nontrivial set of arguments) from statistical counting and the local geography of our universe. The unavoidable predictions include supersymmetry (at some energy scale), SO(N) grand unification, a drastic diminishing of the usual cosmological constant, and a nonsupersymmetric dark matter WIMP which should be detectable within the next several years.

Abstract:The answer to the question in the title is: in search of new physics beyond the Standard Model, for which there are many motivations, including the likely instability of the electroweak vacuum, dark matter, the origin of matter, the masses of neutrinos, the naturalness of the hierarchy of mass scales, cosmological inflation and the search for quantum gravity. So far, however, there are no clear indications about the theoretical solutions to these problems, nor the experimental strategies to resolve them. It makes sense now to prepare various projects for possible future accelerators, so as to be ready for decisions when the physics outlook becomes clearer. Paraphrasing George Harrison, "If you don't yet know where you're going, any road may take you there."

Abstract:Present and prospective fundamental symmetry tests with nucleons, nuclei and atoms are probing for possible new physics at the TeV scale and beyond. These ongoing and proposed table-top as well as accelerator-based experiments are thus a vital component of the Intensity Frontier. At the same time, these tests provide increasingly sophisticated probes of long-distance strong interactions that are responsible for the structure of nucleons and nuclei. In this community report, some of the most compelling opportunities with nucleons, nuclei and atoms are summarized, drawing largely on input received from the nuclear and atomic physics communities. In particular, this report includes many contributions submitted to two recent Intensity Frontier Workshops.
The cosmological constant, dark matter, supersymmetry, and other unsolved problems from a fresh perspective

Abstract:Quantum theory, general relativity, the standard model of particle physics, and the $\Lambda$CDM model of cosmology have all been spectacularly successful within their respective regimes of applicability, but each of these descriptions also has clear limitations. Here we propose a fundamental theory which (like string theory) is based on higher dimensions (with an internal space), a form of supersymmetry, important topological structures, and the implication of a multiverse. Our universe is the product of two vortex-like (or instanton-like) field configurations -- one in 4-dimensional external spacetime, with the big bang at its origin, and the other in a 10-dimensional internal space, which automatically yields an $SO(10)$ grand-unified gauge theory. Lorentz invariance requires a breaking of the initial primitive supersymmetry, as the initial (unphysical) bosonic fields are modified and combined to from physical fields. There is then a new interpretation of all scalar boson sectors -- including but extending the Higgs and sfermion sectors. This last feature predicts a novel dark matter WIMP with no (nongravitational) interactions except second-order gauge couplings to $W$ and $Z$ bosons. Calculations and estimates of the relevant cross-sections for this particle demonstrate that (1)~it may be detectable within the next few years in Xe-based direct-detection experiments, (2)~it may be observable within about 15 years at the high-luminosity LHC, and (3)~it may already have been detected in the gamma rays observed by Fermi-LAT and antiprotons observed by AMS-02. The reinterpretation of scalar boson fields also implies a new phenomenology for sfermions, with reduced cross-sections. There is then a unified picture which may explain why dark matter WIMPs and electroweak-scale sparticles have not yet been detected.
