Abstract:Piles of acoustic studies on Mandarin tones have been conducted. (Howie 1976; Ho 1976&1977; Shih 1988; X 1997, and among others) However, acoustic studies on Hakka tones turn out to be rare. Following X (1997), this paper seeks to give a preliminary acoustic account of the seven tones in Hailu Hakka, and then illustrate the effects of contextual tonal variations via bi-syllabic nonsense sequences and finally compare the pitch contours of two sandhied tones in Hailu Hakka with those of their phonologically identical counterparts. It is found that (a) the tonal value for each Hailu Hakka tone is 51 for Tone 1, (3)23 for Tone 2, 31 for Tone 3, 55 for Tone 4, 55 for Tone 5, 33 for Tone 7, and 32 for Tone 8, which somehow deviates from three circulated sources; (b) X ’s (1997) findings for the anticipatory and carry-over effect work for Hailu Hakka as well except that the dissimilatory nature of the anticipatory effect is not observable here; (c) The acoustic difference between the sandhied Tone 8 and the citation Tone 8 is much greater than that between the sandhied Tone 7 and the citation Tone 7 since the sandhied Tone 8 falls throughout the whole syllable whereas the citation Tone 8 remains quite constant except right before its boundary with the following tone.
