Abstract:Biological aerosol particles have become increasingly important for atmospheric study, but continuous measurements at high time and size resolution have not been available until recently. Here we report seasonal cycles of fluorescent biological aerosol particles (FBAP) from the boreal forest in Hyytiälä, Finland (18 months) and the semi-arid Manitou Experimental Forest, Colorado (10 months). FBAP at both locations were observed to be highest in summer and lowest in winter, increasing by factors of 12 and 5 between these seasons, respectively. In addition to the low temperatures and reduced sunlight during winter, we suggest that snow cover inhibited FBAP release from local terrestrial surfaces and that more extensive snow cover at the Finland site contributed to lower winter FBAP concentrations. Average size distributions at each site exhibited peaks between 1.5 and 6 μm in aerodynamic diameter. The Finland site consistently showed a dominant, narrow FBAP peak at ~ 3 μm in addition to discreet modes at ~ 1.5 and ~ 5 μm, whereas the Colorado site showed broader peaks at 1.5 and 5 μm, suggesting different modes of biological particles at the two sites. FBAP concentrations in both locations were shown to correlate with daily patterns of relative humidity (RH) during each season. Also during summer at each site, average FBAP concentration scaled with RH, but at the Finland site RH values above ~ 82% led to a significant decrease in FBAP concentration. We hypothesize that this is due to dew formation that inhibits bioparticle release. Lastly we show that rain during summer at each location led to pronounced increases in both fluorescent and total particle concentrations with FBAP peak particle size at ~ 2 μm and concentration scaling with rain intensity. We suggest that these particles are primarily fungal spores and other bioparticles lofted from splashing of rain droplets hitting soil and leaf surfaces. During the summer at the Colorado site we consistently observed a mode of ~ 4 μm particles appearing several hours after rain events that we suggest are fungal spores actively emitted when ambient conditions are most advantageous for spread and germination. The pronounced patterns of fluorescent bioparticles observed here suggest that parameterizations of both daily and seasonal cycles will be important to accurately reflect bioparticle emissions in future studies of atmospheric bioaerosols and their potential effects on clouds and precipitation.

Abstract:Boreal forests are an important biome, covering vast areas of the northern hemisphere and affecting the global climate change via various feedbacks [1]. Despite having relatively few anthropogenic primary aerosol sources, they always contain a non-negligible aerosol population [2]. This study describes aerosol chemical composition measurements using Aerodyne Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (C-ToF AMS, [3]), carried out at a boreal forest area in Hyytiälä, Southern Finland. The site, Helsinki University SMEAR II measurement station [4], is situated at a homogeneous Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) forest stand. In addition to the station’s permanent aerosol, gas phase and meteorological instruments, during the HUMPPA (Hyytiälä United Measurements of Photochemistry and Particles in Air) campaign in July 2010, a very comprehensive set of atmospheric chemistry measurement instrumentation was provided by the Max Planck Institute for chemistry, Johannes Gutenberg-University, University of California and the Finnish Meteorological institute. In this study aerosol chemical composition measurements from the campaign are presented.

Abstract:We studied wintertime aerosol formation and subsequent particle growth events that have been frequently observed in ambient air at a boreal forest site (SMEAR II station) in southern Finland. Aerosol size distributions, gas concentrations, biological activity and meteorological parameters have been measured at the site continuously since 1996. An important observation, based on flux measurements, was that all particle formation events were connected with either increased water evapo-transpiration or carbon dioxide uptake by the forest. However, increased H2O or CO2 fluxes did also occur on days without aerosol formation events, but these occasions were connected to cloudy or polluted days with high pre-existing aerosol concentrations. Thus, our overall conclusion is that in order for an aerosol formation event to occur, some ecological or bio-geo-chemical activity is needed. During wintertime, this activity seems to be mostly related to snow-atmosphere interactions.

Abstract:The Station for Measuring Ecosystem–Atmosphere Relations (SMEAR) II is well known among atmospheric scientists due to the immense amount of observational data it provides of the Earth–atmosphere interface. Moreover, SMEAR II plays an important role for the large European research infrastructure, enabling the large scientific community to tackle climate- and air-pollution-related questions, utilizing the high-quality long-term data sets recorded at the site. So far, this well-documented site was missing the description of the seasonal variation in aerosol chemical composition, which helps understanding the complex biogeochemical and physical processes governing the forest ecosystem. Here, we report the sub-micrometer aerosol chemical composition and its variability, employing data measured between 2012 and 2018 using an Aerosol Chemical Speciation Monitor (ACSM). We observed a bimodal seasonal trend in the sub-micrometer aerosol concentration culminating in February (2.7, 1.6, and 5.1 µg m−3 for the median, 25th, and 75th percentiles, respectively) and July (4.2, 2.2, and 5.7 µg m−3 for the median, 25th, and 75th percentiles, respectively). The wintertime maximum was linked to an enhanced presence of inorganic aerosol species (ca. 50 %), whereas the summertime maximum (ca. 80 % organics) was linked to biogenic secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation. During the exceptionally hot months of July of 2014 and 2018, the organic aerosol concentrations were up to 70 % higher than the 7-year July mean. The projected increase in heat wave frequency over Finland will most likely influence the loading and chemical composition of aerosol particles in the future. Our findings suggest strong influence of meteorological conditions such as radiation, ambient temperature, and wind speed and direction on aerosol chemical composition. To our understanding, this is the longest time series reported describing the aerosol chemical composition measured online in the boreal region, but the continuous monitoring will also be maintained in the future.

Abstract:We investigated size-resolved submicrometre aerosol particle number and volume concentration time series as well as aerosol dynamic parameters derived from Differential Mobility Particle Sizer (DMPS) measurements at five background stations in the Nordic boreal forest area. The stations in question were Aspvreten, Hyytiälä and Utö in southern Finland and Sweden, and Värriö and Pallas in the Finnish Lapland. The objective of our investigation was to identify and quantify annual and interannual variation observable in the time series. We found that the total number and mass concentrations were much lower at the Lapland stations than at the southern stations and that the total particle number was strongly correlated to particle formation event frequency. The annual total number concentration followed the annual distribution of particle formation events at the southern stations but much less clearly at the Lapland stations. The volume concentration was highest during summer, in line with higher condensation growth rates; this is in line with the assumption that a large part of the particle volume is produced by oxidized plant emissions. The decrease of sulphate emissions in Europe was not visible in our data set. Aerosol dynamic parameters such as condensation sink, condensation sink diameter and the power law exponent linking coagulation losses and condensation sink are presented to characterize the submicron Nordic background aerosol.

Abstract:The data from observations made in the Hyytiala background station over the period 1997-2003 were analyzed in order to investigate the possible links between physical, chemical and meteorological parameters for event and nonevent days during different seasons. The seasonal patterns of average trace gas (O-3, H2O, NOx = NO + NO2, SO2) concentrations, UV-A irradiation intensity, temperature, relative humidity and condensation sink were established and used for evaluating their influence on the seasonal dependence of the formation and growth rates of particles in the nucleation mode. For the forest region at Hyytiala, an estimate was made on the contribution of the oxidation products of SO2 and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by O-3 and OH to the formation and growth of the nucleation mode particles. The condensation sink was shown to play a crucial role in the chemical dynamics of gaseous precursors and aerosol particles. The variability of the sink was attributed mainly to the humidification of the pre-existing aerosol particle Population, depending thus strongly on the relative humidity. Our results indicate that the observed growth rate of new particles is connected with condensation of secondary organic compounds originating from the oxidation of terpenes.

Abstract:Boreal forests are an important source of trace gases and atmospheric aerosols, as well as a crucial carbon sink. As such, they form a strongly interconnected coupled system with the atmosphere. The SMEAR II station is located in a boreal Scots pine forest in Hyytiala, Finland, and has over 25 years of continuous measurements of atmospheric and ecosystem variables. In this study, we analyse the seasonal variations of trace gases, atmospheric aerosols, greenhouse gases, and meteorological variables, measured at the SMEAR II sta-tion during the past two and a half decades. Several ecosystem and atmospheric variables show seasonal correlations with each other, which suggests seasonal interactions within the climate system that links together ecosystem processes, greenhouse gases, trace gases and atmospheric aerosols. For instance, increased global radiation in summer increases air temperature and consequently affects the plant phenology, which promotes the ecosystem carbon exchange and biogenic volatile organic compound (biogenic VOC) release. This further affects the ambient concentrations of highly oxygenated organic molecules (HOMs) as well as the formation and growth of atmospheric organic aerosols. Organic aerosols subsequently influence aerosol optical properties and, through increased scattering, have the potential to cool the climate. We also discuss the impacts of the warm and dry summers of 2010 and 2018 on the studied variables. For these years, we find a higher-than-average ecosystem primary production especially in June, leading to an increased VOC flux from the forest. The increased VOC flux in turn leads to higher HOM and secondary aerosol concentration in the atmosphere. The latter increases light scattering by atmospheric aero-sol particles and thus leads to climate cooling. The results obtained in this study improve our understanding of how boreal forests respond to climate change.

Abstract:Number size distribution of ambient submicron and ultrafine aerosol particles have been measured on a continuous basis (every 10 minutes) for three quarters of the year 1996, at a forest site in Southern Finland. Continuous monitoring offers additional insight over the diurnal dynamics of the submicron size distribution, including existence of clearly separate size modes as well as events of new particle formation. Selected examples of the measured size distributions are presented, including the particle formation events observed at the measurement site. Typical characteristics of days with particle formation events versus days of no events are discussed.

Abstract:Three years of continuous measurements of aerosol optical properties and simultaneous aerosol number size distribution measurements at Pallas GAW station, a remote subarctic site in the northern border of the boreal forest zone, have been analysed. The scattering coefficient at 550 nm varied from 0.2 to 94.4 Mm(-1) with an average of 7.1 +/- 8.6 Mm(-1). Both the scattering and backscattering coefficients had a clear seasonal cycle with an autumn minimum and a 4 - 5 times higher summer maximum. The scattering was dominated by submicron aerosols and especially so during late summer and autumn. The Angstrom exponent had a clear seasonal pattern with maximum values in late summer and minimum values during wintertime. The highest hemispheric backscattering fraction values were observed in autumn. To analyse the influence of air mass origin on the aerosol optical properties a trajectory climatology was applied to the Pallas aerosol data. The most polluted trajectory patterns represented air masses from the Kola Peninsula, Scandinavia and Russia as well as long-range transport from Britain and Eastern Europe. These air masses had the largest average scattering and backscattering coefficients for all seasons. Higher than average values of the Angstrom exponent were also observed in connection with transport from these areas.

Abstract:As a part of EUCAARI activities, the annual cycle of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) concentrations and critical diameter for cloud droplet activation as a function of supersaturation were measured using a CCN counter and a HTDMA (hygroscopicity tandem differential mobility analyzer) at SMEAR II station, Hyytiala, Finland. The critical diameters for CCN activation were estimated from (i) the measured CCN concentration and particle size distribution data, and (ii) the hygroscopic growth factors by applying kappa - Kohler theory, in both cases assuming an internally mixed aerosol. The critical diameters derived by these two methods were in good agreement with each other. The effect of new particle formation on the diurnal variation of CCN concentration and critical diameters was studied. New particle formation was observed to increase the CCN concentrations by 70-110 %, depending on the supersaturation level. The average value for the kappa - parameter determined from hygroscopicity measurements was kappa = 0.18 and it predicted well the CCN activation in boreal forest conditions in Hyytiala. The derived critical diameters and kappa - parameter confirm earlier findings with other methods, that aerosol particles at CCN sizes in Hyytiala are mostly organic, but contain also more hygrosopic, probably inorganic salts like ammonium sulphate, making the particles more CCN active than pure secondary organic aerosol.

Abstract:During the spring and summer of 1998 and spring of 1999 three major international campaigns have been performed at the SMEAR II Station (Station for Measuring Forest Ecosystem-Atmosphere Relations) in Hyytiala, Finland. The measurements have been conducted as part of the BIOFOR programme, the objectives of which were to elucidate the main factors leading to nucleation and growth of new particles over forested regions. For typical nucleation events encountered in this environment, total particle concentration and surface area reduce rapidly due to mixing processes in the late morning prior to a nucleation event. After this reduction in pre-existing aerosol, ultra-fine particles (3-10 nm) appear, and grow rapidly lover several hours) towards accumulation mode sizes ( > 100 nm). Volatility measurements of new particle composition, once they have grown into accumulation mode sizes, illustrate a significant organic contribution to aerosol mass. Suggested contributors to this organic mass are pinic acid and/or cis-pinoic acid.

Abstract:We present nearly six years of measurements of surface fluxes of momentum, sensible heat, water vapour, carbon dioxide and aerosol particles, along with a three-month time series of ozone flux, measured by eddy covariance above a Scots pine forest in southern Finland from April 1996 to December 2001. The results show marked seasonal and diurnal variation and a significant effect of local and remote anthropogenic pollution on CO2 and particle data. The flux of inert CO2 followed environmental factors through plant and soil-microbe metabolism very closely. The flux of reactive O-3 depended on the overlapping influences of environmental parameters driving photosynthesis and of the available amount of reaction partners. The flux of multireactive aerosol particles showed no clear connection with any environmental variable. On new-particle-formation days, the average deposition velocity of particles was, however, greater than usual because small nucleation-mode particles have greater deposition velocities than do larger accumulation-mode particles.
Aerosol Particle Formation in Different Types of Air Masses in Hyytiälä, Southern Finland

Abstract:We analyzed synoptic weather maps and satellite images over Scandinavia for the period of 2003–2005 in order to reveal in which types of air masses the new particles formation occur more frequently in Hyytiälä, southern Finland. We calculated monthly number of different types of air masses (Arctic, Polar, and Subtropical) and the frequency of different types of air masses for the days classified according the intensity of new particle formation. The results show that for all seasons Arctic air masses bring most favorable condition for aerosol particle formation in boreal forest. In about 40% of arctic air surges new particles are registered at Hyytiälä. We also calculated the median particle concentration for three different modes (nucleation, < 25 nm, Aitken, 25–90 nm, and accumulation, > 90 nm) in Arctic, Polar, and Subtropical air masses during the days when no frontal passages have been observed over Hyytiälä.

Boreal Env. Res. 18: 145-163. We conducted airborne observations of aerosol physical properties over the southern Finland boreal forest environment. The aim was to investigate the lower tropospheric aerosol (up to 4-km altitude) over an area of 250 by 200 km, in particular during new particle formation (NPF) events, and to address the spatial variability of aerosol number concentration and number size distribution. The regional NPF events, detected both airborne and at the ground, with air masses originating from the Arctic or northern Atlantic Ocean were studied throughout the boundary layer and throughout the area covered. Three suitable case studies are presented in more detail. In two of these studies, the concentrations of nucleation mode particles (3-10 nm in diameter) were found considerably higher (up to a factor of 30) in the upper parts of the planetary boundary layer compared to ground-based measurements during the nucleation events. The observed vertical variation can be connected to boundary layer dynamics and interactions between the boundary layer and the lower free troposphere, likely yielding high concentrations of newly formed aerosol particles. Our results suggest that nucleation does not necessarily occur close to the surface. In one presented case we found evidence of NPF occurring in a limited area above cloud, in the complete absence of a regional NPF event.
The Natural Aerosol over Northern Europe and Its Relation to Anthropogenic Emissions - Implications of Important Climate Feedbacks

Abstract:We use a recently developed parametrization to estimate the regional particle field in the summer time troposphere over Scandinavia that would result if the forest were the only source of particles. The calculated field is compared with available observational data. It is concluded that the needle leaf forest above 58 degrees N alone is capable of producing aerosol mass concentrations corresponding to 12-50% of today's values in the boundary layer over Scandinavia. We also demonstrate that the forest itself could produce up to 200 CCN per cubic centimetre on average over Scandinavia and further show that an increase in temperature by 5.8 degrees C compared to today's average temperature could increase this CCN population by 40%. The study shows that we are able to approximate the natural aerosol field resulting from biogenic emissions over the boreal forest in the northern hemispheric region. This information provide an important contribution in the evaluation of the climate effect caused by anthropogenic emissions of particles over the forest and also opens the possibility to better address the climate feedbacks believed to be associated with the boreal region.

Abstract:We have analysed 184 formation events of new atmospheric aerosol particles, observed at a boreal forest site in Hyytiala, Southern Finland. Recognition, selection and classification of the formation events is based on continuous experimental size distribution data of submicron particles from a period of Jan 31(st) 1996 - Sept 18(th) 1999 (1327 days). The apparent particle formation rates vary in the range of 0.001-1 particles/(cm(3) s). The ultrafine particle growth rates vary in the range of 1-17 nm/h.

In this study, we analyzed over five years of particle concentrations in size classes 1.1–1.3 nm, 1.3–1.7 nm and 1.7–2.5 nm obtained with the Particle Size Magnifier (PSM) and three years of precursor vapor concentrations measured with the Chemical Ionization Atmospheric Pressure Interface Time-of-Flight mass spectrometer (CI-APi-ToF) at the SMEAR II station in Hyytiälä, Finland. The results show that the 1.1–1.3 nm particle concentrations have a daytime maximum during all seasons, which is due to increased photochemical activity. There are significant seasonal differences in median concentrations of 1.3–1.7 nm and 1.7–2.5 nm particles, underlining the different frequency of new particle formation between seasons. In particular, concentrations of 1.3–1.7 nm and 1.7–2.5 nm particles are notably higher in spring than during other seasons. Aerosol precursor vapors have notable diurnal and seasonal differences as well. Sulfuric acid and highly oxygenated organic molecule (HOM) monomer concentrations have clear daytime maxima, while HOM dimers have their maxima during the night. HOM concentrations for both monomers and dimers are the highest during summer and the lowest during winter. Higher median concentrations during summer result from increased biogenic activity in the surrounding forest. Sulfuric acid concentrations are the highest during spring and summer, with autumn and winter concentrations being two to three times lower. A correlation analysis between the sub-3nm concentrations and aerosol precursor vapor concentrations indicates that HOMs, particularly their dimers, and sulfuric acid play a significant role in new particle formation in the boreal forest. Our analysis also suggests that there might be seasonal differences in new particle formation pathways that need to be investigated further.
The Seasonal Cycle of Ice-Nucleating Particles Linked to the Abundance of Biogenic Aerosol in Boreal Forests

Abstract:Ice-nucleating particles (INPs) trigger the formation of cloud ice crystals in the atmosphere. Therefore, they strongly influence cloud microphysical and optical properties and precipitation and the life cycle of clouds. Improving weather forecasting and climate projection requires an appropriate formulation of atmospheric INP concentrations. This remains challenging as the global INP distribution and variability depend on a variety of aerosol types and sources, and neither their short-term variability nor their long-term seasonal cycles are well covered by continuous measurements. Here, we provide the first year-long set of observations with a pronounced INP seasonal cycle in a boreal forest environment. Besides the observed seasonal cycle in INP concentrations with a minimum in wintertime and maxima in early and late summer, we also provide indications for a seasonal variation in the prevalent INP type. We show that the seasonal dependency of INP concentrations and prevalent INP types is most likely driven by the abundance of biogenic aerosol. As current parameterizations do not reproduce this variability, we suggest a new mechanistic description for boreal forest environments which considers the seasonal variation in INP concentrations. For this, we use the ambient air temperature measured close to the ground at 4.2 m height as a proxy for the season, which appears to affect the source strength of biogenic emissions and, thus, the INP abundance over the boreal forest. Furthermore, we provide new INP parameterizations based on the Ice Nucleation Active Surface Site (INAS) approach, which specifically describes the ice nucleation activity of boreal aerosols particles prevalent in different seasons. Our results characterize the boreal forest as an important but variable INP source and provide new perspectives to describe these new findings in atmospheric models.

Abstract:Measured aerosol size distributions from three measurement stations and modeled air mass trajectory data were combined to study aerosol dynamics in the boreal forest zone in Northern Scandinavia. Three approaches were used: investigation of new particle formation events, analysis of air masses arriving from ocean to continent, and study of changes in the aerosol size distributions when air masses travel from one measurement site to another. The statistical analysis of air masses travelling either from the Atlantic Ocean to measurement sites or from one site to another showed that on average the condensational growth was present during the summer season, and it was not restricted only to the days when evident new particle formation was observed. The rate of this average apparent growth of particle diameter was 3-7 times smaller than the growth rate of nucleation mode particles during the new particle formation events.
Diurnal and annual characteristics of particle mass and number concentrations in urban, rural and Arctic environments in Finland

Abstract:In order to be able to detect annual and diurnal variation the nucleation, Aitken and accumulation mode aerosol number concentrations were investigated. In this study particulate matter and aerosol number concentrations based on three years (1999–2001) measurements in four different places, Helsinki, Hyytiälä, Pallas and Värriö in Finland were utilized. Mean PM10 concentration was found to be in urban, urban background, disturbed rural and rural conditions 18.7, 15.3, 10.2 and 6.9μgm−3. PM2.5 concentrations in urban, urban background and rural conditions were 9.6, 8.2 and 5.8μgm−3. PM1 concentration in rural area were 4.1μgm−3. Total number concentrations between 10 and 500nm in urban, rural and arctic background were 16660, 2110 and about 920cm−3, respectively. Annual cycle of different particle sizes was also investigated. Particle mass was found to have maximum during the spring and autumn. Nucleation mode particle concentrations had their maximum both in urban and rural conditions in spring and autumn. For Aitken mode a similar variation was found. Accumulation mode particles were found to have the highest concentrations during summer and the lowest concentrations during winter. In urban conditions local sources drive over natural variability, but a natural cycle can still be seen. Diurnal variation was found to be associated with traffic in urban conditions. In rural conditions, diurnal variation of nucleation mode particles were connected to new particle formation. It was also found, that there is no correlation between ultrafine (<90nm) and larger (>90nm) particles.
