Abstract:The Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission, operated by The National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA), was launched in January 2015. Many validation and evaluation works conducted at global and regional scales demonstrate that the SMAP surface soil moisture (SSM) product meets the mission requirement of 0.04 m3/m3. Meanwhile, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's (JAXA) Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2 (AMSR2), the successor of the AMSR-E which was launched in 2002, has provided the brightness temperature (TB) and SSM products from 2012. If the state of the art SSM product of SMAP can be used to calibrate and then improve the AMSR2/AMSR-E SSM product, a long term SSM product, starting from 2002, with accuracy around 0.04, can be generated and many water cycle related research can be benefited.
