Abstract:Biosensors have been found with numerous applications in many areas including genetic analysis, detection of infectious diseases, environmental monitoring and forensic analysis. We have witnessed rapid advances in this field, especially with the emergence of nanotechnology in the past decade. This special issue of Biotechnology Journal focuses on biosensors. By definition, biosensors are a type of devices that transduce biological recognition reactions to various physical signals including optical, electrochemical, acoustic and mechanical. Biosensors have been found with numerous applications in many areas including genetic analysis, detection of infectious diseases, environmental monitoring and forensic analysis. We have witnessed rapid advances in this field, especially with the emergence of nanotechnology in the past decade. As examples, nanomaterials and nanostructured surfaces have been proven of high utility in recognition-based capturing and signal amplification, which have remarkably increased the sensitivity for detecting a wide range of biomarkers for cancers, as well as targets other applications. To reflect important progress and provide a broader perspective in this exciting field, we organized this Special Issue by inviting active biosensor researchers to contribute a collection of research articles and reviews. Biosensors have been found with numerous applications in many areas including genetic analysis, detection of infectious diseases, environmental monitoring and forensic analysis. We have witnessed rapid advances in this field, especially with the emergence of nanotechnology in the past decade. This issue contains three invited reviews. Tan et al. summarize recent advances in phage display technology for bioanalysis 1. Lee et al. review microtechnology-based organ systems and whole-body models for drug screening 2. Kuroda et al. describe the use of material-binding proteins and peptides for biosensing and summarized rapid and sensitive detection of airborne asbestos fibers 3. In ten research articles, two papers focus on the optimization of biosensors for better sensitivity, one explores the graphene interface for DNA analysis 4 and the other studies the electrode interface for electrochemical detection 5. Endo et al. developed printable photonics-based photonic crystal films for label-free optical detection of C-reactive protein using antigen-antibody reaction 6. An electrochemical sensing system employing fructosamine 6-kinase was developed for glycated albumin measurement without relying on proteolytic digestion 7. In an interesting study, Iijima et al. demonstrate that bio-nanocapsule-based scaffold improves the sensitivity and ligand-binding capacity of mammalian receptors on the sensor chip 8. Hokuto et al. employed bio-LSI systems for simultaneous immunosensing of different analytes in multiple specimens based on an imaging of enzyme activity 9. Two studies explored the use of aptamers for developing biosensors 10, 11. Xiao and Xiang proposed a simple fluorescence method for quantification of total phosphorothioate content in bacterial DNA 12. Finally, Chaumpluk et al. designed a simple bendable paper-based lab-on-a-chip for the detection of aflatoxic strains of Aspergillus sp.in herbal specimens 12.
