Abstract:Eutrophication, mainly caused by the oversupply of nitrate (NO3−) and phosphate, has become a serious environmental problem in Xiangshan Bay (east China), but the sources of the nitrate are poorly understood. In this study, the estuarine distributions of dual stable isotopes (δ15N and δ18O) of NO3− measured in May 2012 were used in combination with concurrent measurements of salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen, and nutrients (nitrate, nitrite, ammonium, and phosphate) to investigate NO3− sources and the processes that control NO3− distributions within the bay. In the lower bay, high concentrations of NO3− (up to 60.6 μmol L−1), an N/P ratio of 52, and low values of nitrate δ15N (δ15NNO3 = 5.7‰–6.7‰) and δ18O (δ18ONO3 = 1.8‰–3.5‰) indicate that NO3− in this area was likely from the Changjiang and Qiantangjiang rivers as well as local nitrification-associated inputs. In the upper bay, constituent concentrations and high values of δ15NNO3 (up to 8.8‰) and δ18ONO3 (up to 6.8‰) suggest that NO3− distributions here were controlled mainly by the mixing of coastal and fresh waters, phytoplankton assimilation, and inputs of riverine NO3−, possibly derived from manure and sewage. Spatial variations of Δ(15,18), the nitrate δ15N-to-δ18O anomaly, is possibly resulted from the different water residence times across the bay, which could in turn lead to different degrees of nitrification or variable amounts of NO3− from atmospheric deposition.

Abstract:Increased reactive nitrogen (Nr, NO3− + NH4++ + dissolved organic nitrogen) emission from the Asian continent poses profound threats to ecosystem safety from terrestrial throughout the ocean proper. To quantify atmospheric Nr input, diagnose its sources, and evaluate influence on marine nitrogen cycle of the South China Sea (SCS), an oligotrophic marginal sea adjacent to the emission hot spot China, we conducted measurements of concentrations of nitrate and ammonium as well as other major ions and dual isotopes of nitrate (δ15NNO3 and δ18ONO3) in atmospheric deposition collected from Dongsha Island off southern China. The δ15NNO3 and δ18ONO3 for dry deposition averaged at −2.8‰ and +58.8‰, ranging from −7.5 to +3.7‰ and from ∼ +17 to +88‰, respectively. Wet deposition, although with limited samples, showed a similar flux-weighted mean in δ15NNO3 (−2.6‰) yet a significantly higher mean in δ18ONO3 (+78.8‰). The dual isotope ratios showed an anti-correlation and an inverse seasonality; the δ15NNO3 values were higher in summer compared to those in winter, while the δ18ONO3 values were higher in winter than those in summer. In winter, not only dual isotopic compositions of nitrate but also the ammonium and nitrate dry deposition fluxes were relatively uniform, demonstrating a persistent influence of fossil fuel combustion sourced from Asian continental outflows via the northeasterly monsoon winds. More variable isotopic values in summer likely suggest varying sources and dynamical formation processes of dry deposition nitrate. Biomass burning and lightning are suggested to be responsible for the observed higher δ15NNO3 values in summer. Atmospheric nitrate and ammonium deposition together was estimated to be ∼50 mmol N m−2 year−1, with the dominance of nitrate in dry deposition but ammonium slightly higher in wet deposition. If not including this additional fertilization of atmospheric inorganic nitrogen deposition to enhance the carbon sequestration, CO2 release out of the SCS would be double than that of the present amount, 460 ± 430 mmol C m−2 year−1. Our study demonstrates that atmospheric deposition may serve as an important external Nr supplier to the SCS; however it is difficult to separate the isotopic signal from N2 fixation (−2–0‰) due to their similarity in δ15NNO3. More studies related to isotopic composition of nitrogen speciation in atmospheric Nr deposition, their relative contributions and source identification, and the role of typhoons in the SCS are required.
Nitrate Source Apportionment in a Subtropical Watershed Using Bayesian Model

Abstract:Nitrate (NO3-) pollution in aquatic system is a worldwide problem. The temporal distribution pattern and sources of nitrate are of great concern for water quality. The nitrogen (N) cycling processes in a subtropical watershed located in Changxing County, Zhejiang Province, China were greatly influenced by the temporal variations of precipitation and temperature during the study period (September 2011 to July 2012). The highest NO3- concentration in water was in May (wet season, mean±SD=17.45±9.50 mg L(-1)) and the lowest concentration occurred in December (dry season, mean±SD=10.54±6.28 mg L(-1)). Nevertheless, no water sample in the study area exceeds the WHO drinking water limit of 50 mg L(-1) NO3-. Four sources of NO3(-) (atmospheric deposition, AD; soil N, SN; synthetic fertilizer, SF; manure & sewage, M&S) were identified using both hydrochemical characteristics [Cl-, NO3-, HCO3-, SO42-, Ca2+, K+, Mg2+, Na+, dissolved oxygen (DO)] and dual isotope approach (δ15N-NO3- and δ(18)O-NO3-). Both chemical and isotopic characteristics indicated that denitrification was not the main N cycling process in the study area. Using a Bayesian model (stable isotope analysis in R, SIAR), the contribution of each source was apportioned. Source apportionment results showed that source contributions differed significantly between the dry and wet season, AD and M&S contributed more in December than in May. In contrast, SN and SF contributed more NO3- to water in May than that in December. M&S and SF were the major contributors in December and May, respectively. Moreover, the shortcomings and uncertainties of SIAR were discussed to provide implications for future works. With the assessment of temporal variation and sources of NO3-, better agricultural management practices and sewage disposal programs can be implemented to sustain water quality in subtropical watersheds.

Abstract:The coastal atmospheric environment is one of the most complex environments on earth. It is shaped by terrestrial, marine, and atmospheric processes and acts as an external nutrient source for coastal waters. At present, there are few observations of inorganic nitrogen isotopes of China coastal aerosols, let alone the Yellow Sea. In this study, a weekly collection of total suspended particulate aerosols was conducted on the Qianliyan Island in 2018 for the measurements of inorganic nitrogen species (NO3- and NH4+) and their isotopic ratios (delta N-15-NO3-, delta O-18-NO3-, and delta N-15-NH4+). At the Qianliyan Island, the average NO3- and NH4+ concentrations were 2.49 +/- 2.12 and 3.33 +/- 2.68 mu g center dot m(-3), respectively; the average delta N-15-NO3-, delta O-18-NO3-, and delta N-15-NH4+ were 2.4 parts per thousand +/- 5.7 parts per thousand, 78.7 parts per thousand +/- 8.0 parts per thousand, and -2.6 parts per thousand +/- 6.3 parts per thousand, respectively. The major nitrate formation pathways were center dot OH oxidation and N2O5 hydrolysis paths, and the dominant sources of inorganic nitrogen aerosols were coal combustion (29% +/- 7%), marine (19% +/- 15%), and fertilizer (16% +/- 13%). Aerosol delta N-15-NO3- and delta O-18-NO3- were obviously higher in winter and lower in summer; conversely, aerosol delta N-15-NH4+ was slightly higher in summer and slightly lower in winter. The difference in nitrogen sources was considered to be the best explanation for the aerosol delta N-15-NO3- and delta N-15-NH4+ differences between summer and winter, of which coal combustion contributed the most. The seasonal difference in nitrate formation paths was considered to be the best explanation for the difference of Qianliyan aerosol nitrate delta O-18-NO3- between summer and winter. Aerosol inorganic nitrogen deposition flux was estimated to be 3.4 nmol N center dot m(-2)center dot s(-1), which induced less than 1% to marine primary production, and aerosol inorganic nitrogen deposition, compared with N-2 fixation, contributed some 80% of delta N-15-NO3- depression of the summer Yellow Sea thermocline.
Size Distributions and Dry Deposition Fluxes of Water-Soluble Inorganic Nitrogen in Atmospheric Aerosols in Xiamen Bay, China

Abstract:Size-segregated aerosol particles were collected using a high volume MOUDI sampler at a coastal urban site in Xiamen Bay, China, from March 2018 to June 2020 to examine the seasonal characteristics of aerosol and water-soluble inorganic ions (WSIIs) and the dry deposition of nitrogen species. During the study period, the annual average concentrations of PM1, PM2.5, PM10, and TSP were 14.8 ± 5.6, 21.1 ± 9.0, 35.4 ± 14.2 μg m−3, and 45.2 ± 21.3 μg m−3, respectively. The seasonal variations of aerosol concentrations were impacted by the monsoon with the lowest value in summer and the higher values in other seasons. For WSIIs, the annual average concentrations were 6.3 ± 3.3, 2.1 ± 1.2, 3.3 ± 1.5, and 1.6 ± 0.8 μg m−3 in PM1, PM1-2.5, PM2.5–10, and PM>10, respectively. In addition, pronounced seasonal variations of WSIIs in PM1 and PM1-2.5 were observed, with the highest concentration in spring-winter and the lowest in summer. The size distribution showed that SO42−, NH4+ and K+ were consistently present in the submicron particles while Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+ and Cl− mainly accumulated in the size range of 2.5–10 μm, reflecting their different dominant sources. In spring, fall and winter, a bimodal distribution of NO3− was observed with one peak at 2.5–10 μm and another peak at 0.44–1 μm. In summer, however, the fine mode peak disappeared, likely due to the unfavorable conditions for the formation of NH4NO3. For NH4+ and SO42−, their dominant peak at 0.25–0.44 μm in summer and fall shifted to 0.44–1 μm in spring and winter. Although the concentration of NO3–N was lower than NH4–N, the dry deposition flux of NO3–N (35.77 ± 24.49 μmol N m−2 d−1) was much higher than that of NH4–N (10.95 ± 11.89 μmol N m−2 d−1), mainly due to the larger deposition velocities of NO3–N. The contribution of sea-salt particles to the total particulate inorganic N deposition was estimated to be 23.9—52.8%. Dry deposition of particulate inorganic N accounted for 0.95% of other terrestrial N influxes. The annual total N deposition can create a new productivity of 3.55 mgC m−2 d−1, accounting for 1.3–4.7% of the primary productivity in Xiamen Bay. In light of these results, atmospheric N deposition could have a significant influence on biogeochemistry cycle of nutrients with respect to projected increase of anthropogenic emissions from mobile sources in coastal region.
Nitrogen Deposition in Precipitation to a Monsoon-Affected Eutrophic Embayment: Fluxes, Sources, and Processes

Abstract:Daya Bay in the South China Sea (SCS) has experienced rapid nitrogen pollution and intensified eutrophication in the past decade due to economic development. Here, we estimated the deposition fluxes of nitrogenous species, clarified the contribution of nitrogen from precipitation and measured ions and isotopic composition (delta N-15 and delta O-18) of nitrate in precipitation in one year period to trace its sources and formation processes among different seasons. We found that the deposition fluxes of total dissolved nitrogen (TDN), NO3-, NH4+, NO2-, and dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) to Daya Bay were 132.5, 64.4 17.5, 1.0, 49.6 mmol m(-2.)yr(-1), respectively. DON was a significant contributor to nitrogen deposition (37% of TDN), and NO3- accounted for 78% of the DIN in precipitation. The nitrogen deposition fluxes were higher in spring and summer, and lower in winter. Nitrogen from precipitation contributed nearly 38% of the total input of nitrogen (point sources input and dry and wet deposition) in Daya Bay. The delta N-15-NO3- abundance, ion compositions, and air mass backward trajectories implicated that coal combustion, vehicle exhausts, and dust from mainland China delivered by northeast monsoon were the main sources in winter, while fossil fuel combustion (coal combustion and vehicle exhausts) and dust from PRD and southeast Asia transported by southwest monsoon were the main sources in spring; marine sources, vehicle exhausts and lightning could be the potential sources in summer. delta O-18 results showed that OH pathway was dominant in the chemical formation process of nitrate in summer, while N2O5 + DMS/HC pathways in winter and spring.
Identification of the nitrate pollution in surface water of Dongshan Bay based on stable isotope technology

Abstract:Identifying and quantifying water nitrate pollution is crucial for managing aquatic environment of a bay. Dongshan Bay, a significant semi-enclosed bay in the southeastern coastal area of Fujian Province, features mangrove and coral reef ecosystems at its estuary and bay mouth, respectively. Dongshan Bay is impacted by human activities such as mariculture. We quantified and analyzed nitrate pollution status in the surface waters of Dongshan Bay by measuring physicochemical parameters, stable isotopes (δ15N-NO3-, δ18O-NO3- and δ15N-NH4+) of the surface waters, and using statistical methods including the MixSIAR isotope mixing model. The results showed that the concentrations of chlorophyll a and dissolved inorganic nitrogen in the surface waters exhibited a noticeable gradient change, decreasing from the estuary of the Zhangjiang River to the mouth of Dongshan Bay. The maximum concentrations of chlorophyll a, NH4+, NO3- and NO2- were 45.2 μg·L-1, 52.67 μmol·L-1, 379.2 μmol·L-1 and 3.93 μmol·L-1, respectively. The nitrogen and oxygen isotope values of NH4+ and NO3- in the surface waters showed significant spatial variations. According to the MixSIAR model results, nitrogen sources in the surface waters of Dongshan Bay were mainly freshwater inputs of the Zhangjiang River estuary, aquaculture wastewater, and groundwater. The freshwater input from the Zhangjiang River estuary contributed the most (25.2%), while aquaculture wastewater, groundwater and urban sewage accounted for 24.6%, 19.0%, and 15.1%, respectively. It is evident that freshwater input from the Zhangjiang River estuary is the primary source of nitrate in the surface waters of Dongshan Bay.

Abstract:Measurements were conducted during 2004–2005 and 2009–2010 to characterize atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition to the Jiulong River Estuary – Xiamen Bay area in southeast China. Isotopic analysis and long-term data (1990–2009) for inorganic N extracted from the national acid deposition dataset were used to determine the dominant source of atmospheric nitrate and N component dynamics. The results showed that the mean dissolved total N concentration in rain water for the three coastal area sites was 2.71 ± 1.58 mg N L−1 (n = 141) in 2004. The mean dissolved inorganic N at the Xiamen site was 1.62 ± 1.19 mg N L−1 (n = 46) in 2004–2005 and 1.56 ± 1.39 mg N L−1 (n = 36) in 2009–2010, although the difference is not significant, nitrate turnover dominates the N component in the latter period. Total deposition flux over Xiamen was 30 kg N ha−1 yr−1, of which dry and wet deposition contributed 16% and 84%, respectively. Nitrate in wet deposition with low isotopic value (between −3.05 and −7.48‰) was likely to have mostly originated from combustion NOx from vehicle exhausts. The inorganic N in acid deposition exhibited a significant increase (mainly for nitrate) since the mid-1990s, which is consistent with the increased gaseous concentrations of NOx and expanding number of automobiles in the coastal city (Xiamen). The time series of nitrate anions and ammonium cations as well as pH values during the period 1990–2009 reflected an increasing trend of N emission with potential implication for N-induced acidification.
Wet-only Deposition of Atmospheric Inorganic Nitrogen and Associated Isotopic Characteristics in a Typical Mountain Area, Southwestern China.

Abstract:To quantify and compare atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition and its N isotopic ratio are critical for constraining N sources and effective reduction of reactive N emissions. In this study, a total of 223 rainwater samples were collected by wet-only auto-samplers, and wet-only deposition and isotopic composition (δ15N) of reduced (NH4+-N) and oxidized (NO3--N) N were measured at three typical mountain sites, including an urban (Wanzhou, WZ), a town (Gaoyang, GY) and a rural (Dade, DD) site in Chongqing, southwestern China in 2016. The wet-only inorganic N deposition (DIN, sum of NO3--N and NH4+-N) were 17.50, 8.63 and 12.16kgNha-1yr-1 at WZ, GY and DD site, respectively. Annual δ15N-NH4+ values of rainwaters were negative at the urban site (-3.12±3.21‰, WZ) and positive at both town and rural site (0.65±12.51‰, GY; 2.16±6.11‰, DD). Annual δ15N-NO3- values, on the contrary, were positive at the urban site (0.33±7.87‰, WZ) and negative at both town and rural site (-5.59±2.20‰, GY; -0.39±8.89‰, DD). These results reveal the urban site was wet-only DIN hotspot and had a different N source compared with the town-rural site in the mountain area. Moreover, precipitation DIN had a potentially negative risk on both aquatic and forest ecosystems.
Key biogeochemical processes and source apportionment of nitrate in the Bohai Sea based on nitrate stable isotopes

Abstract:Excessive nitrate input is one of the primary factors causing nearshore eutrophication. This study applied the nitrate stable isotope techniques to analyse the biogeochemical processes and sources of nitrate in the Bohai Sea (BHS). The results showed that intensive NO3- assimilation probably occurred at surface in summer, while nitrification primarily occurred in the Yellow River diluted water. In autumn, regional assimilation and nitrification were still identified. For avoiding the interference from assimilation, the isotopic fractionations were further calculated as correction data for the quantitative analysis of nitrate sources. The river inputs were identified as the primary source of nitrate in the BHS in summer and autumn, accounting for >50 %, and the atmospheric deposition was the secondary source. This study provides quantitative data for evaluating the significance of river inputs to the nearshore nitrate, which will be beneficial to policy formulation on the BHS eutrophication control.
Isotope Constraints on Seasonal Dynamics of Dissolved and Particulate N in the Pearl River Estuary, South China

Abstract:Isotope measurements were performed on dissolved NO3-, NH4+, and suspended particulate total N along a salinity gradient in the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) to investigate seasonal changes in main N sources and its biogeochemical processing under the influence of monsoon climate. Our data revealed that municipal sewage and remineralized soil organic N were the major sources of DIN (NO3- and/or NH4+) in freshwater during winter and summer, respectively, whereas phytoplankton biomass was a major component of PN in both seasons. In low-salinity waters (<2-3), nitrification was proved to be a significant NO3- source via NH4+ consumption, with N isotope effects of -15.3 parts per thousand in summer and -23.7 parts per thousand in winter for NH4+ oxidation. The contribution of nitrification to the total NO3- pool was smaller in summer than in winter, most likely due to freshwater dilution. At midsalinities (3-20), delta N-15 values of PN were similar to those of NO3- and NH4+ in summer, reflecting a strong coupling between assimilation and remineralization. In winter, however, higher delta N-15(NH4) but lower delta N-15(NO3) than delta N-15(PN) were observed, even though delta N-15(PN) was similar between summer and winter. Intense sediment-water interaction and resuspension of sediments during winter appeared largely responsible for the decoupling. At high salinities, the greater enrichment in delta O-18(NO3) than in delta N-15(NO3) (up to 15.6 parts per thousand) in winter suggests that atmospheric deposition may contribute to NO3- delivery during the dry season. Overall, these results show the importance of seasonal variability in physical forcing on biological N sources and its turnover processes in the highly dynamic river-dominated estuary.
Identifying Diffused Nitrate Sources in a Stream in an Agricultural Field Using a Dual Isotopic Approach.

Abstract:Nitrate (NO3(-)) pollution is a severe problem in aquatic systems in Taihu Lake Basin in China. A dual isotope approach (δ(15)NNO3(-) and δ(18)ONO3(-)) was applied to identify diffused NO3(-) inputs in a stream in an agricultural field at the basin in 2013. The site-specific isotopic characteristics of five NO3(-) sources (atmospheric deposition, AD; NO3(-) derived from soil organic matter nitrification, NS; NO3(-) derived from chemical fertilizer nitrification, NF; groundwater, GW; and manure and sewage, M&S) were identified. NO3(-) concentrations in the stream during the rainy season [mean±standard deviation (SD)=2.5±0.4mg/L] were lower than those during the dry season (mean±SD=4.0±0.5mg/L), whereas the δ(18)ONO3(-) values during the rainy season (mean±SD=+12.3±3.6‰) were higher than those during the dry season (mean±SD=+0.9±1.9‰). Both chemical and isotopic characteristics indicated that mixing with atmospheric NO3(-) resulted in the high δ(18)O values during the rainy season, whereas NS and M&S were the dominant NO3(-) sources during the dry season. A Bayesian model was used to determine the contribution of each NO3(-) source to total stream NO3(-). Results showed that reduced N nitrification in soil zones (including soil organic matter and fertilizer) was the main NO3(-) source throughout the year. M&S contributed more NO3(-) during the dry season (22.4%) than during the rainy season (17.8%). AD generated substantial amounts of NO3(-) in May (18.4%), June (29.8%), and July (24.5%). With the assessment of temporal variation of diffused NO3(-) sources in agricultural field, improved agricultural management practices can be implemented to protect the water resource and avoid further water quality deterioration in Taihu Lake Basin.

Abstract:The South China Sea (SCS) is a crucial region for studying atmospheric aerosols, given its unique geographical location and the interaction of various natural and anthropogenic sources. In this study, we measured the isotopic characteristics of sulfate and nitrate in PM2.5 and utilized a Bayesian isotope mixing model (SIAR) to analyze their sources and formation pathways. Sulfur isotopic values in sulfate (δ34S-SO42−) were 8.7 ± 1.8‰, while nitrogen and oxygen isotopic values in nitrate (δ15N-NO3− and δ18O-NO3−) were −0.9 ± 2.4‰ and 52.3 ± 7.3‰, respectively. The results revealed that sulfate was primarily influenced by marine biogenic sulfur emissions (mostly dimethyl sulfide, DMS), fossil fuel combustion, and biomass burning. Nitrate formation was dominated by the NO2 + •OH pathway (accounting for 69.8–85.7%), with significant contributions from vehicle emissions, biomass burning, and lightning. These findings offer key insights into the complex interactions between natural and anthropogenic aerosol sources in the SCS, contributing to a broader understanding of marine aerosol chemistry.

Abstract:The supply of nitrogen (N) from various external and internal sources into the euphotic zone, e.g., atmospheric N deposition (AND), upwelling, lateral intrusion, and remineralization, modulates the biogeochemical and climatic roles of oligotrophic oceans and complicates N dynamics in the upper water column (≤200 m). However, our ability to resolve the mechanisms controlling upper-ocean N cycling is limited by the lack of high-resolution vertical observations. Here, we analyzed concentrations and dual isotopes of nitrate (NO3–) in the upper 200 m of the oligotrophic South China Sea. By examining dual isotopic signatures of NO3– (δ15NNO3 and δ18ONO3) and multiple associated parameters vertically throughout the upper water column, we resolved the dominant N sources and processes, including AND/N2-fixation, assimilative fractionation, and nitrification, and quantitatively evaluated their contributions in the vertical distribution of NO3–, which can be separated into the Δδ18ONO3-positive (δ18ONO3−obs−δ18ONO3−200m>0) and Δδ18ONO3-negative layers (δ18ONO3−obs−δ18ONO3−200m<0) according to the deviation in δ18ONO3 at a given depth (δ18ONO3-obs) from that at 200 m (δ18ONO3-200m). In the Δδ18ONO3-positive layer, the NO3– assimilated by phytoplankton was largely sourced from nitrification (39 ± 11%) and AND/N2 fixation (17-28%), whereas these two processes accounted for 17 ± 10% and 7 ± 6% of the total NO3– pool in the Δδ18ONO3-negative layer. Considering a substantial contribution of the regenerated (nitrification-sourced) NO3– to the total NO3– pool especially in the Δδ18ONO3-positive layer, caution should be taken that the new production assessed by the rates of NO3– uptake may be significantly overestimated in the SCS. These findings not only highlight the importance of these biogeochemical processes to NO3– dynamics in the upper water column of marginal seas, but also with important implications for the estimation of biological carbon pump and/or the f-ratio.
Continental Emissions Influence the Sources and Formation Mechanisms of Marine Nitrate Aerosols in Spring Over the Bohai Sea and Yellow Sea Inferred From Stable Isotopes

Abstract:Abstract The influence of continental emissions on the origin and formation mechanisms of atmospheric particulate nitrate (ρ‐NO 3 − ) aerosols in the marine boundary layer remains unclear. Here, synchronous observations of nitrogen isotope ratios ( δ 15 N–NO 3 − ) and oxygen isotope anomaly (Δ 17 O–NO 3 − ) in ρ‐NO 3 − were conducted across the Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea in Eastern China. Nitrate concentrations, δ 15 N–NO 3 − and Δ 17 O–NO 3 − exhibited a pronounced north‐to‐south latitudinal gradient. Combined with backward air mass trajectory analysis, the high nitrate concentration and isotopic characteristics in the northern sea area were found to be affected by the continental outflow near China while the low values in the southern sea area were more related to the oceanic inflow. Stable isotope analysis in R (SIAR) indicated that near the northern sea area, the nitrate radicals (NO 3 ) reacted with hydrocarbons (HC) or dimethyl sulfides (DMS) pathway (NO 3 + HC/DMS) played a leading role in nitrate production, whereas the NO 2 + OH pathway dominated near the southern sea area. Nitrate in the northern seas originated mainly from nitrogen oxides (NO x = NO + NO 2 , the gaseous precursor of nitrate) emitted from continental sources, especially coal combustion and biomass burning. While closer to the southern seas, the proportion of NO x generated in the marine environment (from ship and biogenic emissions) increased. Overall, the differential relative contributions of continental and marine atmospheric chemistry and NO x sources lead to the spatial distribution characteristics of atmospheric nitrate concentrations and isotopic values over the Yellow and Bohai Seas.

Abstract:To elucidate the sources and transformations of nitrogen in the South China Sea (SCS), the nitrogen isotopic composition of nitrate (${\updelta }^{ 1 5} {\text{N}}_{{{\text{NO}}_{ 3} }}$) was measured in seawater samples from the water column of this marginal sea and the adjacent western North Pacific Ocean (WNP). Comparison of the isotopic signatures from these two locations suggests that the main source of nitrogen into the SCS was nitrate that entered from the WNP through the Luzon Strait. Values of ${\updelta }^{ 1 5} {\text{N}}_{{{\text{NO}}_{ 3} }}$ were generally lower in the SCS than in the WNP, and the ${\updelta }^{ 1 5} {\text{N}}_{{{\text{NO}}_{ 3} }}$ maximum observed in the SCS intermediate water was lower than the corresponding WNP maximum. This pattern is attributed to mixing within the SCS in combination with the outflow of SCS intermediate water to the WNP. A mass balance model indicates that atmospherically derived N (a combined input of new nitrogen from marine N2 fixation and atmospheric deposition) supplied approximately 6% of the particulate nitrogen exported from the euphotic zone to the deep SCS. This supply of isotopically light nitrogen cannot, however, explain the low and downward-decreasing δ15N that has been previously observed in sinking particles of the deep SCS. We propose that an alternative explanation might be a downward-increasing ratio of isotopically light NH4 +-N to organic N due to the degradation of organic N within the sinking particles (i.e., relative enrichment of the NH4 +) and also particle incorporation of excreted ammonium from zooplankton.
Nitrogen Speciation in Various Types of Aerosols in Spring over the Northwestern Pacific Ocean

Abstract:The cumulative atmospheric nitrogen deposition has been found to profoundly impact the nutrient stoichiometry of the eastern China seas (ECSs: the Yellow Sea and East China Sea) and the northwestern Pacific Ocean (NWPO). In spite of the potential significance of dry deposition in those regions, shipboard observations of atmospheric aerosols remain insufficient, particularly regarding the compositions of water-soluble nitrogen species (nitrate, ammonium and water-soluble organic nitrogen – WSON). We conducted a cruise covering the ECSs and the NWPO during the spring of 2014 and observed three types of atmospheric aerosols. Aluminum content, air mass backward trajectories, weather conditions, and ion stoichiometry allowed us to discern dust aerosol patches and sea-fog-modified aerosols (widespread over the ECSs) from background aerosols (open ocean). Among the three types, sea-fog-modified aerosols contained the highest concentrations of nitrate (536 ± 300 nmol N m−3), ammonium (442 ± 194 nmol N m−3) and WSON (147 ± 171 nmol N m−3); furthermore, ammonium and nitrate together occupied ∼ 65 % of the molar fraction of total ions. The dust aerosols also contained significant amounts of nitrate (100 ± 23 nmol N m−3) and ammonium (138 ± 24 nmol N m−3) which were obviously larger than those in the background aerosols (26 ± 32 for nitrate and 54 ± 45 nmol N m−3 for ammonium), yet this was not the case for WSON. It appeared that dust aerosols had less of a chance to come in contact with WSON during their transport. In the open ocean, we found that sea salt (e.g., Na+, Cl−, Mg2+), as well as WSON, correlated positively with wind speed. Apparently, marine dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) was emitted from breaking waves. Regardless of the variable wind speeds from 0.8 to as high as 18 m s−1, nitrate and ammonium, by contrast, remained in narrow ranges, implying that some supply and consumption processes of nitrate and ammonium were required to maintain such a quasi-static condition. Mean dry deposition of total dissolved nitrogen (TDN) for sea-fog-modified aerosols (1090 ± 671 µmol N m−2 d−1) was 5 times higher than that for dust aerosols (190 ± 41.6 µmol N m−2 d−1) and around 20 times higher than that for background aerosols (56.8 ± 59.1 µmol N m−2 d−1). Apparently, spring sea fog on the ECSs played an important role in removing atmospheric reactive nitrogen from the Chinese mainland and depositing it into the ECSs, thus effectively preventing its seaward export to the NWPO.
Comparison of Nitrate Isotopes Between the South China Sea and Western North Pacific Ocean: Insights into Biogeochemical Signals and Water Exchange

Abstract:Reconstructing past changes in the oceanic nitrate inventory with sedimentary N records in the South China Sea (SCS), which is the terminal of North Pacific Intermediate Water (NPIW), has regional and global implications. However, water-column nitrate cycling that affects N isotope preservation remains poorly understood in the SCS. We present a new data set of nitrate isotopes (delta 15NNO3 ${\delta }<^>{15}{\mathrm{N}}_{{\text{NO}}_{3}}$ and delta 18ONO3 ${\delta }<^>{18}{\mathrm{O}}_{{\text{NO}}_{3}}$) to elucidate nitrate dynamics in the SCS and the adjoining western North Pacific Ocean (wNPO). Greater increases in delta 18ONO3 ${\delta }<^>{18}{\mathrm{O}}_{{\text{NO}}_{3}}$ than in delta 15NNO3 ${\delta }<^>{15}{\mathrm{N}}_{{\text{NO}}_{3}}$ are observed in the SCS euphotic zone, suggesting a combined effect of partial nitrate assimilation and nitrification. In the subsurface and thermocline waters of both regions, upward disproportional decreases in delta 15NNO3 ${\delta }<^>{15}{\mathrm{N}}_{{\text{NO}}_{3}}$ and delta 18ONO3 ${\delta }<^>{18}{\mathrm{O}}_{{\text{NO}}_{3}}$ accompanied by elevated nitrate anomalies (N*) indicate an accumulation of external N. Such changes are less significant in the SCS due to higher nitrate concentrations therein, although external N influxes are comparable in both regions. High delta 15NNO3 ${\delta }<^>{15}{\mathrm{N}}_{{\text{NO}}_{3}}$ and delta 18ONO3 ${\delta }<^>{18}{\mathrm{O}}_{{\text{NO}}_{3}}$ values in the wNPO intermediate water result from the lateral transport of NPIW with isotopically more enriched nitrate from the remote denitrification zones followed by mixing with overlying water containing isotopically depleted nitrate. As NPIW flows into the SCS, its isotopically enriched signal is further diluted by strong vertical mixing with overlying and underlying waters in the interior. Compared to its source water from the wNPO, the SCS deep water has consistent nitrate isotopic compositions but significantly lower N*, indicating increased benthic denitrification at the wNPO margins with an estimated rate of 0.26-0.41 mmol N m(-2) day(-1).
Using Dual Isotopes of Nitrate to Identify the Source of Nitrogen Pollution in the Songhua River Basin, Northeast China

Abstract:Nitrogen pollution is a severe problem in the Songhua River Basin (SHR) in China. Samples were collected from 36 sections of the SHR during the high, low, and flat seasons of the river, and the main sources of nitrogen in the water were qualitatively analyzed with isotope data for nitrogen and oxygen of nitrate. The contribution rates of each major pollution source were quantitatively analyzed using the Iso Source mass balance model. The results from these experiments indicate that the values for δ15N-NO3 and δ18O-NO3 in the flat flow season range from 1.52‰ to 14.55‰ and −14.26‰ to 2.03‰, respectively. The values for δ15N-NO3 and δ18O-NO3 in the low flow season range from 6.66‰ to 15.46‰ and −5.82‰ to 65.70‰, respectively. In the low flow season, nitrogen comes from the input of domestic and manure sewage (53%) and soil organic N (45%). The values of δ15N-NO3 and δ18O-NO3 in the high flow season range from 2.07‰ to 14.24‰ and −3.99‰ to 8.03‰, respectively. In the high flow season, nitrogen comes from soil organic nitrogen (41%), domestic and manure sewage (32%), and nitrogen fertilizer (27%), which are the main sources of nitrogen pollution in the SHR. The conclusions from the qualitative and quantitative analysis of nitrogen sources in the SHR can provide a scientific basis for the source control and treatment of nitrogen pollution.

Abstract:Monthly analytical results for more than two years long of δ15N and δ18O of nitrate in wet deposition are reported for a tropical city of Zhanjiang in the southernmost mainland China, in an effort to elucidate NOx sources and its oxidation pathways to nitrate. The results showed that monthly variations of δ18ONO3- responded well to changes in sunshine hours, with lower δ18ONO3- values corresponding to longer sunshine hours. This pattern suggests that NOx oxidation via the OH radical was the predominant pathway, which, by estimate, accounted for 87% in winter and 94% in summer, for nitrate formation. Remarkably, we found that the δ18ONO3- here are prominently low relative to previous studies, likely due to that annual sunshine hours in this tropical city is relatively long. Moreover, available data of reported δ18ONO3- in wet deposition showed an increasing trend with latitude, reflecting a shift of the predominant NOx oxidation pathways from those via the OH radical in low latitudes to those via O3 in high latitudes, corresponding to the decrease of sunshine hours. A temporarily co-variation of δ15NNO3- and δ18ONO3- was observed, exhibiting higher values in dry winter and lower values in wet summer, which was attributed to the washout effect on the dual isotopes. During wet seasons, complete nitrate washout suggests that δ15NNO3- in precipitation should be similar to the nitrate formed in the atmosphere, and thereby can be used for source apportionment. A Bayesian model showed that the source of atmospheric nitrate deposition is mainly natural (61%) in Zhanjiang, with less anthropogenic contribution.
