Unlike most previous studies, this study uses field data, so findings can help improve practical maintenance efficiency. Abstract:Polygonal wear is one of the most critical failure modes of high-speed train wheels that would significantly compromise the safety and reliability of high-speed train operation. However, the mechanism underpinning wheel polygon is complex and still not fully understood, which makes it challenging to track its evolution of the polygonal wheel. The large amount of data gathered through regular inspection and maintenance of Chinese high-speed trains provides a promising way to tackle this challenge with data-driven methods. This article proposes a data-driven approach to predict the degree of the polygonal wear, assess the reliability of individual wheels and the health index of all wheels of a high-speed train for maintenance priority ranking. The synthetic minority over-sampling technique—nominal continuous is adopted to augment the maintenance dataset of imbalanced and mixed features. The autoencoder is used to learn abstract features to represent the original datasets, which are then fed into a support vector machine classifier. The approach is coherently optimized by tuning the model hyper-parameters based on Bayesian optimization. The effectiveness of our proposed approach is demonstrated by the wheel maintenance data obtained from the year 2016 to 2017. The results can also be used to support practical maintenance priority allocation.

Abstract:In order to study the wheel polygon wear problems in high-speed trains, an iterative model of wheel wear was established based on 1) the train-track rigid-flexible coupling dynamics model, 2) Kik-Piotrowiski + Fastsim wheel-rail contact model, and 3) Archard wear model to predict the developing process of wheel polygon. Taking a certain type of high-speed train in China as an example, the developing process of the 20-order wheel polygon is simulated. Compared with the Hertz model, the results of the Kik-Piotrowiski model are more consistent with the actual situation, and the prediction of the wheel polygon is more accurate. The results show that with the increase of vehicle running speed, the dominant order of the final wheel polygon decreases gradually, while the excitation frequency always locates between 550 and 600 Hz, which verifies the 'frequency fixed' mechanism. By comparing the development of wheel polygon wear results under three working conditions 1) flexible wheelset + flexible rail, 2) rigid wheelset + flexible rail, and 3) flexible wheelset + rigid rail), and by analysing the harmonic response of rail, it is concluded that the third-order bending modal vibration of rail plays an important role in the forming of wheel polygon. .

Abstract:The polygonization of high-speed train wheels is commonly considered as a serious threat to reliability of high-speed trains all over the world. Traditional studies in polygonization of wheels focus on modeling its mechanism via physics-based models. However, to the knowledge of the authors, the polygonization process has not been fully explained by existing studies due to the complex degradation mechanism and varying operation environment which is difficult to monitor and measure. In this article, the data-driven multi-state system (MSS) models are developed for the reliability assessment of high-speed train wheels based on the analysis of actual operation data. The results can be used to support practical maintenance decision making. Another contribution of this paper is to prove that the environmental factors exert significant impacts on the reliability of Chinese high-speed train wheels. This finding has been included in the development of the MSS models. The results by these models are used to suggest a more reasonable maintenance schedule for Chinese high-speed train wheels. The obtained maintenance intervals are expected to assist the railway companies to reduce the operational risk as well as improve the maintenance efficiency.

Abstract:The increasing need for repairs of polygonized wheels on high-speed railways in China is becoming problematic. At high speeds, polygonized wheels cause abnormal vibrations at the wheel-rail interface that can be detected via axle-box accelerations. To investigate the quantitative relationship between axle-box acceleration and wheel polygonization in both the time and frequency domains and under high-speed conditions, a dynamics model was developed to simulate the vehicle-track coupling system and that considers both wheel and track flexibility. The calculated axle-box accelerations were analyzed by using the improved ensemble empirical mode decomposition and Wigner-Ville distribution time-frequency method. The numerical results show that the maximum axle-box accelerations and their frequencies are quantitatively related to the harmonic order and out-of-roundness amplitude of polygonized wheels. In addition, measuring the axle-box acceleration enables both the detection of wheel polygonization and the identification of the degree of damage.

Abstract:This present study investigates wheel polygonisation growth on China's high-speed trains from the perspective of multiple wheelsets/track coupling vibration. Two theoretical models were established: a simplified linear model for polygonal wear trend analysis in the frequency domain, and a detailed nonlinear model for reproducing polygonisation in the time domain. The simulation results suggest that both the amplitude–frequency and phase-frequency characteristics play vital roles in the development of polygonal wear. The rail localised bending resonances between adjacent wheels are the main contributors to the high-order wheel polygonisation. The third and second order rail localised bending modes induce a high amplitude of wear fluctuation at 645 and 400 Hz, respectively, while leading to the phase difference between the wear response and original excitation being closest to 180° at 565 and 330 Hz. Accordingly, wheel polygonisation with frequencies of 572 and 342 Hz achieved the largest wear growth rate. Then, the rail localised bending vibration was captured on-site through a train passing test. And a long-term tracking test of high-speed train was utilised to validate the evolution process of the wheel polygonisation, it was determined that the simulated development of wheel polygonal wear and axlebox acceleration reached agreements with the measured results.

Abstract:With the continuous development of high-speed railroad technology, the operating speed and mileage of moving trains continue to increase, and the phenomenon of wheel-rail contact fatigue and wear is gradually highlighted, and the problem of wheel polygon wear is also prevalent in the operating site. Wheel polygon wear will deteriorate the wheel-rail contact relationship, so that the wheel-rail force surge, the safety and stability of the train caused serious impact. Therefore, wheel polygons become a key problem to be solved, but the formation and development mechanism of wheel polygons has not been fully clarified so far. This paper establishes a dynamic model of the moving train considering the elastic roadbed, and studies the dynamic performance of the moving train with the changing law of the moving train, respectively, in terms of wheel-rail vertical force, car body vibration acceleration, and wheelset vibration acceleration, to explore the influence of wheel polygons on the performance of the moving train. The results show that with the increase of wheel polygon order and wear depth, the safety of the moving vehicle gradually decreases and the wheel-rail vertical force gradually increases, and the wheelset vibration acceleration is more sensitive to the increase of order from 1 to 13.

Abstract:With increases in train speed and traffic density, problems due to wheel polygons and those caused by wheel–rail impacts will increase accordingly, which will affect train operational safety and passenger ride comfort. This paper investigates the effects of polygonal wheels on the dynamic performance of the track in a high-speed railway system. The wheel–rail interaction forces caused by wheel polygons are determined using a dynamic vehicle–track model, and the results are entered into a slab track finite element model. The influence of the harmonic order and out-of-roundness (OOR) amplitude of wheel polygons on the transient dynamic characteristics of the track(von Mises equivalent stress, displacement, and acceleration) is examined under high-speed conditions. The results indicate that the vibration acceleration and von Mises equivalent stress of the rail increase in proportion to the harmonic order and the OOR amplitude and velocity of a polygonized wheel. The vibration displacement of the rail first increases and then decreases with a change in the harmonic order, and reaches a maximum at the ninth order. The dynamic responses of the concrete slab layer, cement-asphalt layer, and support layer increase linearly with the harmonic order and amplitude of wheel polygons and decrease from top to bottom. Through a combination of numerical simulations and real-time monitoring of rail vibrations, this study provides guidance on potential sensor locations to identify polygonized wheels before they fail.

Abstract:Timely monitoring of wheel polygon is of great importance for the formulation of railway wheel maintenance strategies. In this study, a novel data-driven method for onboard and quantitative detection of wheel polygon is presented. First, the axle box acceleration (ABA) signal preprocessing method and stationarity test are introduced to select the relatively stationary signal from the measured data of ABA. Next, an iterative algorithm is developed to accurately extract the quasi-stationary ABA signals, representing each wheel rotation period. Then, an improved frequency domain integration method is developed to quantitatively capture the orders and roughness levels of the wheel polygon. Finally, the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method is verified using the field-measured data of ABA and the wheel polygon in one cycle of wheel re-profiling. The results show that the proposed method can quantitatively capture the dominant characteristics of single- and multi-orders wheel polygons at different operating mileages with minimum and maximum absolute errors of 0.04 dB re 1 μm and −2.33 dB re 1 μm, respectively. The comparative analysis demonstrates that the proposed method outperforms the traditional time and frequency domain integration algorithms in the detailed characterisation of wheel polygon roughness levels.

Abstract:The high-frequency excitation generated by the wheel polygon seriously affects the safety of the train. In order to explore the evolution mechanism of wheel polygonisation, a long-term prediction model of wheel circumferential wear on both sides of the wheelset is proposed. Based on a new updating strategy, the model is implemented by combining the coupled vehicle/track dynamic model and the wheel circumferential wear model. The wheel circumferential wear model is implemented by local tangential contact model FaStrip and USFD (a wear model proposed by The University of Sheffield). By analysing the measured data, five wheel circumferential states are summarised, which are employed as wheel non-circular excitations to analyse the evolution of the wheel polygons on both sides of the wheelset. The results show that the same order of the polygonal wheels on both sides of the wheelset is the main reason for the evolution of the order of polygonal wheels in integer multiples. When the circumferences of the wheels on both sides are in an asymmetric state, the wheels on both sides will interact with each other, and the final circumferences of the wheels will gradually evolve into mixed polygonal circumferences related to the initial orders.

Abstract:Advances in Mechanical Engineering, Volume 14, Issue 8, August 2022. High-level wheel polygon wear is common in high-speed EMUs. Wheel polygon wear causes high-frequency vibration of vehicles and track systems, which seriously affects the safe operation of vehicles. Some key influencing factors are of great significance for restraining wheel polygon wear. In this paper, a long-term wear iterative model is established by combining the coupled vehicle/track dynamic model with the Archard wear model, which is used to simulate the whole development process of high-speed train wheel polygon. The development process of wheel polygon is simulated when the vehicle runs at 300 km/h. The simulating results are consistent with the actual situation. It is found that changing the speed of the vehicle can prevent the rapid development of the wheel polygon of a fixed order, so as to slow down the development of the wheel polygon. As the wheel hardness increases, the roughness level gradually decreases. If there is corrugation in the rail, it will greatly accelerate the development of wheel polygon, especially when the wavelength of rail corrugation can divide the wheel circumference. In addition, with the increase of rail corrugation amplitude, the promoting effect will gradually increase.

Abstract:Wheel and rail wear seriously affects the safety and reliability of train operations. In this study single-carriage and double-carriage models considering the connecting unit of a high-speed train are developed to investigate the normal forces, lateral forces, and lateral displacements of wheelsets. Based on the results from these models, the Archard wear model is employed to predict the wheel wear. In addition, based on the daily measured data, a nonlinear autoregulatory (NAR) model and a wavelet neural network (WNN) model are developed to predict the wheel wear over a longer time period. The simulation results show that, compared with the single-carriage model, the normal forces, lateral forces, and lateral displacements of the wheelsets close to the connecting unit in the double-carriage model increase to a certain extent dependent on the speed. The wheel wear predictions show that the wheel wear on the wheelsets near the connecting unit is slightly larger than on the wheelsets far from the connecting unit. Based on the mean square error, the NAR model has somewhat better performance in the wheel wear prediction than the WNN model. The research results represent an important contribution to the maintenance and safe operation of high-speed trains.

Abstract:Serious wheel polygonal wear usually causes drastic wheel/rail interactions, which threats the running safety of railway vehicles. This paper presents an investigation into the effect of polygonal wear of heavy-haul locomotive wheels on the dynamic performance and wheel/rail interactions through extensive on-site tests and numerical simulations, in which a special attention is paid to locomotive vibrations and dynamic wheel/rail tangential forces. The measured results conducted on two objective locomotives were firstly compared, including the characteristics of wheel polygonal wear and locomotive vibrations in vertical, longitudinal and lateral directions. A 3D heavy-haul train-track coupled dynamic model was then formulated to investigate wheel/rail dynamic interaction induced by polygonal wear of locomotive wheels. A low adhesion zone (LAZ) and a PI-based anti-slip control algorithm were embedded into the dynamic model to analyse the effects of wheel polygonal wear on wheel/rail longitudinal and lateral interactions under normal and low adhesion conditions. The results show that the severe wheel polygonal wear affects not only the vertical but also the longitudinal performance of the wheel/rail system notably. The wheel high-order polygonal wear has a conspicuous effect on longitudinal, lateral and vertical vibrations of locomotive system components.

Abstract:This work details research on the formation mechanism of wheel polygonalization in high-speed trains and its effect factors by numerical modeling in order to prevent the increasingly prevalent problem of wheel polygonal wear. The lateral self-excited vibration model of a wheel was developed using the LuGre friction model and self-excited vibration theory. The properties of wheel self-excited vibration and the crucial condition of Hopf bifurcation were investigated; the process of wheel polygonal wear was simulated and the results were validated using field tracking data. The results demonstrated that periodic self-excited vibration generated by Hopf bifurcation is a required condition for polygonal wheel attrition at a given speed. The wheel's polygonal wear has the following characteristics: "Constant speed—Self-excited—Fixed frequency—Divisible." The order of the polygon is determined by the ratio of the wheel lateral self-excited vibration frequency to its rotational frequency. Wheel polygonal wear was caused by the vertical dynamic force of the wheel rail. The findings of the study can serve as a theoretical foundation for the prediction and reduction of wheel polygonal wear.

Abstract:As train running speeds increase, the wheel–rail interactions of high‐speed trains are becoming more complicated, and predicting and monitoring wheel wear are becoming increasingly important for the safe operation of high‐speed trains. Therefore, identifying the critical factors that affect the wear of wheel–rail interactions and developing novel methods to predict wheel wear are of great importance. In this work, SIMPACK is used to establish a dynamic model of a high‐speed train and to investigate the normal and lateral contact forces of the wheel–rail interfaces and the wear of the wheels for a train passing through a specially designed route that consists of straight‐line, smooth‐curved, and circular tracks. The wheel wear is predicted by means of the Archard wear model based on the SIMPACK analysis, and the wear is validated by a backpropagation neural network (BPNN) classification based on daily measured data provided by the Beijing Railway Administration. The results from the SIMPACK dynamic simulation and the BPNN classification show that the position of a wheel in a bogie has a significant effect on the wheel wear, but the position of a carriage in a train does not have a significant effect on the wheel wear. The findings from this study are very useful for the maintenance and safe operation of high‐speed trains.

Abstract:The standard model-based approach for predicting wheel wear consists of four main sub-modules: a macro vehicle-track model, a normal wheel-rail contact model, a tangential wheel-rail contact model, and a wear model. In terms of the normal contact model, the few existing studies using non-Hertzian methods to calculate wheel wear rarely consider wheelset yaw, although it is an unavoidable phenomenon when a train is running. Aiming at this issue, a non-Hertzian normal wheel-rail contact model considering wheelset yaw is proposed based on ANALYN and Sun's approximate expression (i.e., ANALYN-YAW). In terms of the wear model, the currently available models were developed for specific wheel/rail materials and under fixed conditions. To extend these models to a new situation, an automatic adjustment strategy based on Kriging surrogate model and particle swarm optimization algorithm (KSM-PSO) is introduced to adjust the wear rate of the wear model developed by the University of Sheffield (USFD model). Finally, an ANALYN-YAW-FaStrip-adjusted USFD-based wheel wear prediction model is proposed, and a comparison of results from simulation and field tests is presented and shows that the predicted result of the ANALYN-YAW-FaStrip-adjusted USFD model is more plausible than that of the ANALYN-FaStrip-adjusted USFD model and the Hertzian-FaStrip-adjusted USFD model.

Wheel polygonal wear is one of the most serious problems in the railway industry nowadays. To study the mechanism of wheel polygonal wear, the wear prediction model was established. The three-dimensional wheel profile model and the improved USFD wear prediction algorithm were used to research the wear state of the wheel. The vehicle system dynamic characteristics and wheel wear state under different running speeds are studied. The results show that the vibration state of the wheel will be affected by the vertical and lateral coupling vibration of the wheel when considering the three-dimensional wheel polygonal wear. Due to the influence of coupled vibration, the wheel will appear larger wheel-rail force fluctuation points at different phase angles. The large wheel-rail force fluctuation at these different phase angles is one of the reasons for the formation of wheel polygonal wear. At the same time, the natural mode of the vehicle system will also affect the order of the wheel polygon and the amplitude of the wheel polygon. This study provides a new idea for the research of the wheel polygon mechanism.

Optimization of rail profile design for high-speed lines based on Gaussian function correction method

As high-speed trains operate at a higher speed, the problem of rail wear is more serious. In this paper, a new Gaussian function correction (GFC) method is proposed to design the new rail profile, two parameters are introduced to control the removal area. Then a high-speed train vehicle dynamic model is established, the Kriging surrogate model (KSM) is used to reduce the number of simulations and the Non dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II (NSGA-II) algorithm is used to optimize the rail profile. Finally, the dynamic characteristics and wheel/rail wear evolution of the optimized profile are analyzed. The results show that the dynamic performance of the optimized rail profile has been improved. The maximum wear depth of the optimized rail profile is reduced by 15.63% when passing a total weight of 16 Mt. The wheel wear depth of S1002CN profile contact with CHN60OPT is reduced by 4.8%. The proposed GFC method can quickly generate a new rail profile and has good engineering significance for rail grinding. The GFC-KSM-NSGA- II method can be used to optimize the rail profiles for high-speed lines, and it can further guide the operation and maintenance.

Abstract:An algorithm to predict train wheel diameter based on Gaussian process regression (GPR) optimized using a fast simulated annealing algorithm (FSA-GPR) is proposed in this study to address the problem of dynamic decrease in wheel diameter with increase in mileage, which affects the measurement accuracy of train speed and location, as well as the hyper-parameter problem of the GPR in the traditional conjugate gradient algorithm. The algorithm proposed as well as other popular algorithms in the field, such as the traditional GPR algorithm, and GPR algorithms optimized using the artificial bee colony algorithm (ABC-GPR) or genetic algorithm (GA-GPR), were used to predict the wheel diameter of a DF11 train in a section of a railway during a period of major repairs. The results predicted by FSA-GPR was compared with other three algorithms as well as the real measured data from RMSE, MAE, R2 and Residual value. And the comparisons showed that the predictions obtained from the GPR optimized using FSA algorithm were more accurate than those based on the others. Therefore, this algorithm can be incorporated into the vehicle-mounted speed measurement module to automatically update the value of wheel diameter, thereby substantially reducing the manual work entailed therein and improving the effectiveness of measuring the speed and position of the train.
