Abstract:A highly sensitive, calibration-free method, wavelength modulation - direct absorption spectroscopy (WM-DAS), is proposed by extracting the characteristic frequencies of modulated laser intensity. This method combines the advantages of measuring absolute absorbance profile from calibration-free DAS with the enhanced noise rejection and high sensitivity of WMS. The preliminary validation experiment of H2O transitions shows that the WM-DAS method improves the accuracy of the absorbance profile measurement with a best-fit standard residual of 4.9 × 10-5. This new method might inspire new approaches to high-precision measurement of spectral line parameters and gas information with weak absorptions or industrial applications.

Abstract:The wavelength modulation-direct absorption spectroscopy (WM-DAS) was used to measure the spectroscopic parameters for 8 H2O absorption transitions near 1.39 mu m at 300-900 K. A reference light path was introduced to eliminate the effect of ambient gas and inherent fluctuation of laser intensity. Experimental results at high temperatures for the transition at 7185.597 cm(-1) showed that the WM-DAS enhanced noise rejection by extracting the characteristic frequencies of modulated laser intensity. The SNR was enhanced to 1800 for the peak absorbance of 20% and remained 380 around the peak absorbance of only 0.5% by using this method, showing its huge potential in situ gas sensing in harsh engineering fields. The Voigt, Rautian, Galatry and quadratic speed-dependent Voigt profiles were used to recover the absorbance and determine the best-fit spectroscopic parameters and their temperature dependence. The measured N-2-broadening coefficients compare well with the available values listed in the HITRAN/HITEMP database. The Dicke narrowing and speed-dependent coefficients were also determined with analyses of the uncertainties in these measured parameters.

Abstract:The absorbance is of great importance in the tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) as it contains information of both gas properties and spectroscopic parameters. A novel, calibration-free wavelength modulation-direct absorption spectroscopy (WM-DAS) is proposed and experimentally verified in this two-part paper. This method combines the capability of absorbance measurement from DAS and the advantages of enhanced noise rejection and high sensitivity from WMS. In this Part I, we focus on the full theoretical basis and procedures of this method from the following three aspects: the high-accuracy characterizations of laser frequency and intensity, noise rejection ability by extracting the characteristic spectra through the fast Fourier transform (FFT) of the light intensity, and the simultaneous fitting strategy for both baseline and absorbance. The preliminary validation experiment of CO transition at 4300.6999 cm−1 in a static gas cell shows the high accuracy of the proposed method.
High Precision Calibration of Spectral Parameters of CO at 1567 Nm Based on Wavelength Modulation-Direct Absorption Spectroscopy

Abstract:Direct absorption spectrum (DAS) can be used to measure the molecular absorptivity function and determine the spectral parameters of the gas by fitting the measured absorptivity function. Wavelength modulation-direct absorption spectroscopy (WM-DAS) is based on DAS and combines with the idea of harmonic analysis in wavelength modulation spectrum (WMS). The measurement accuracy of absorptivity function can be effectively improved by using Fourier transform. In this paper, the absorptivity function of CO R5-R11 near infrared weak absorption line at 1567 nm is accurately reproduced by using the WM-DAS method combined with long optical path gas absorption cell at room temperature and low pressure. The standard deviation of the fitting residual reaches 3 x 10(-5), and then the spectral parameters such as collision broadening, Dicke narrowing and speed-dependent collision broadening coefficients are measured in high precision. These parameters are compared with the results from the high sensitivity continuous wave cavity ring down spectroscopy (CW-CRDS). The experimental results show that the signal-to-noise ratio of the absorptivity function measured by CW-CRDS is about 2.5 times that of the long-path WM-DAS, and the measured spectral parameters are highly consistent. The relative errors of the collision broadening coefficients obtained by using the Voigt profiles of the two methods are less than 1%. At the same time, the detection limit of CO at 1567 nm based on the WM-DAS method is about 80 ppb, and the corresponding absorption coefficient is 2 x 10(-10) cm(-1), which is slightly higher than that from the CW-CRDS method. However, the WM-DAS method has the advantages of fast measurement speed, simple system and low cost, and is expected to provide a new method of measuring the weak absorption lines.
High Precision Measurement of Spectroscopic Parameters of CO at 2.3 Μm Based on Wavelength Modulation-Direct Absorption Spectroscopy

Abstract:Wavelength modulation-direct absorption spectroscopy (WM-DAS) combines the advantages of DAS and WMS, which can directly measure the absorbance and improve the measurement signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). It can be used to measure the spectroscopic parameters of gas molecular spectral lines. Firstly, the WM-DAS method is used to measure the absorbance of CO molecule 4 300. 700 cm(-1) spectral lines under the condition of 24. 151 mu mol center dot L-1 CO concentration, room temperature and pressure, combined with Herriott cell with an effective optical path length of about 45 m. The absorbance is optimally fitted by Voigt profile (VP)and the results show that the standard deviation of the absorbance fitting residual from WM-DAS is reduced by more than half compared with that from the traditional DAS method, which proves that the anti-interference ability of the WM-DAS method is stronger than that of the DAS method. Then, this method combined with an absorption cell with an optical path of about 50 cm was used to measurethe absorbance of 8 weak absorption spectral lines of CO at 4 278 similar to 4 304 cm(-1) under different pressures. The CO standard gas with a concentration of 0. 411 mu mol center dot L-1 was used in the experiment. The measured absorbance was fitted by VP, Rautionprofile (RP) and quadratic-speed-dependent-Voigt profile (qSDVP) to obtain the collision broadening coefficient gamma(0) (T-0), the Dicke narrowing coefficient beta(0) (T-0) and the speed-dependent collision broadening coefficient gamma(2) (T-0) in qSDVP, respectively, and the uncertainty of the measurement results was analyzed. The measured gamma(0) (T-0) obtained by Voigt profile fitting agree well with those from the HITRAN database, with a relative error of less than 1%. The measurement results of beta(0) (T-0) and gamma(2) (T-0) provide an important data for further perfecting molecular spectral database and high-precision measurement of gas parameters.
A Wide-Range and Calibration-Free Spectrometer Which Combines Wavelength Modulation and Direct Absorption Spectroscopy with Cavity Ringdown Spectroscopy

Abstract:A wide-range, calibration-free tunable diode laser spectrometer is established by combining wavelength modulation and direct absorption spectroscopy (WM-DAS) with continuous wave cavity ringdown spectroscopy (CW-CRDS). This spectrometer combines the benefits of absolute concentration measurements, wide range, and high speed, using WM-DAS with enhanced noise reduction in CW-CRDS. The accurate baseline ringdown time, τ0, is calculated by the absorption peak (measured by WM-DAS) and the ringdown time containing gas absorption information (measured by CW-CRDS at the center wavelength of the spectral line). The gas concentration is obtained without measuring τ0 in real time, thus, greatly improving the measuring speed. A WM-DAS/CW-CRDS spectrometer at 1.57 μm for CO detection was assembled for experimental validation of the multiplexing scheme over a concentration ranging from 4 ppm to 1.09% (0.1 MPa, 298 K). The measured concentration of CO at 6374.406 cm−1 shows that the dynamic range of this tunable diode laser absorption spectrometer is extendable up to five orders of magnitude and the corresponding precision is improved. The measurement speed of this spectrometer can extend up to 10 ms, and the detection limit can reach 35 ppb within 25 s.

Abstract:A novel method with high accuracy and easy implementation was proposed based on the sinewave-scanned direct absorption spectroscopy (DAS) in this paper. A fitting routine in the time domain was developed to simultaneously deduce the baseline and more importantly, absorbance through the explicit baseline expression offered by the sinewave scan. This method effectively solves the difficulties of baseline determination and provides more accurate wavelength calibration compared with conventional DAS. The accuracy and performance with narrow scans and high frequency were experimentally verified using CO transition at 4300.699 cm-1, from which the inferred line strength agrees well with HITRAN 2016. Meanwhile, a more accurate N2 collisional broadening was provided and the speed-dependent collisional broadening coefficient of this transition was reported for the first time.
Analysis of Multi-Component Broadband Absorbers Based on Wavelength Modulation United Absorption Spectroscopy

Abstract:Wavelength Modulation United Absorption Spectroscopy (WM-UAS), which is virtually an extension of Wavelength Modulation Spectroscopy (WMS), for measuring multi-component broadband absorbers is proposed and demonstrated in this paper. "Broadband absorbers" indicates matters that do not exhibit resolved absorption spectra within a certain wavelength range. WM-UAS requires the assistance of a kind of probe substance which exhibits a series of narrow absorption profiles to measure broadband absorbers. An improved WMS technique is first introduced, with which the limitation of low absorbance in conventional WMS is broken through. On this basis, the mathematical expression for WM-UAS is deduced step-by-step. Simulations and experiments are conducted so that the procedures as well as the validity of WM-UAS is presented. In the experiment, water vapor is selected as the probe substance while methanol vapor and ethanol vapor are simultaneously measured. According to Allan deviation analysis, the optimal average time of the system is 150.18 s and the corresponding detection limit is 19.38 ppm.m for ethanol and 14.85 ppm.m for methanol. Abstract:We present a tunable diode laser spectrometer with a novel, rapid time multiplexed direct absorption- and wavelength modulation-spectroscopy operation mode. The new technique allows enhancing the precision and dynamic range of a tunable diode laser absorption spectrometer without sacrificing accuracy. The spectroscopic technique combines the benefits of absolute concentration measurements using calibration-free direct tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (dTDLAS) with the enhanced noise rejection of wavelength modulation spectroscopy (WMS). In this work we demonstrate for the first time a 125 Hz time division multiplexed (TDM-dTDLAS-WMS) spectroscopic scheme by alternating the modulation of a DFB-laser between a triangle-ramp (dTDLAS) and an additional 20 kHz sinusoidal modulation (WMS). The absolute concentration measurement via the dTDLAS-technique allows one to simultaneously calibrate the normalized 2f/1f-signal of the WMS-technique. A dTDLAS/WMS-spectrometer at 1.37 µm for H2O detection was built for experimental validation of the multiplexing scheme over a concentration range from 50 to 3000 ppmV (0.1 MPa, 293 K). A precision of 190 ppbV was achieved with an absorption length of 12.7 cm and an averaging time of two seconds. Our results show a five-fold improvement in precision over the entire concentration range and a significantly decreased averaging time of the spectrometer.

Artificial Absorption Creation for More Accurate Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy Measurement

Abstract:A novel strategy for more accurate tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) measurement is presented. This method is immune to non-absorption transmission losses, and allows dead zone removal for ultra-low concentration detection, and reference point selection at atmospheric pressure. The method adjusts laser emission and creates artificial absorption peaks according to requirements. By creating an artificial absorption peak next to the real absorption zone, calibration is not necessary. The developed method can be applied to not only wavelength modulation spectroscopy (WMS) but also direct absorption (DA). In WMS, the method does not need two harmonic signals, resulting in higher reliability, better performance, and no electro-optical gain uncertainty. At the same time, non-absorption transmission losses effect is suppressed from 70% to 0.425% with DA and from 70% to 0.225% with WMS method. When the artificial absorption peak coincides with the real one, the dead zone of measurement can be removed to give a lower detection limit, and water vapor still can be detected when concentration is lower than 0.2ppm in our experiment. Reference point selection uncertainty with the DA method, especially when the signal-to-noise ratio is low and absorption line is broad, can also be facilitated. And the uncertainty of reference point selection is improved from 6% to 0.8% by measuring reference point amplitude. The method is demonstrated and validated by WMS and DA measurements of water vapor (1atm, 296K, 1368.597nm). The measurement results obtained using the new method reveal its promise in TDLAS.
Monitoring of ambient carbon monoxide concentrations based on wavelength modulation direct absorption spectroscopy

Abstract:Wavelength modulation-direct absorption spectroscopy (WM-DAS) has the advantages of both direct absorption spectroscopy (DAS) measurable absorptivity function and wavelength modulation spectrum (WMS) with high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). In this paper, the WM-DAS spectrum is used to measure the absorptivity of 4300.7 cm –1 line of CO molecule and the detection limit is as low as 4 × 10 –7 (200 s) at 0.5 m optical path, room temperature and low pressure. Then, through combining the WM-DAS spectrum with a 120 m long optical path Herriott cell, at room temperature and atmospheric pressure, the standard deviation of the fitting residual error of the absorptivity function is reduced down to ~5.1 × 10 –5 (1 s). Finally, different concentrations of CO are continuously monitored by long-path WM-DAS measurement system, and compared with the results obtained from the cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CRDS). The experimental results show that the measurement results from the long-path WM-DAS and CRDS method are the same. The detection limit of CO concentration in long-path WM-DAS system is as low as 0.9 ppb (200 s), and the WM-DAS system is simple and the measurement speed is much faster than CRDS. At the same time, the long-path WM-DAS system is used to continuously monitor the atmospheric trace CO concentration and trend for one month, and the measured results are highly consistent with those from the China Environmental Monitoring Station.

Abstract:A novel high-spectral-resolution lidar (HSRL) technique for atmospheric aerosol remote sensing,which uses multi-longitudinal-mode laser as the transmitting light source,is proposed.A field-widened Michelson interferometer (FWMI) is used as the spectral discriminator,and the periodic frequency discrimination characteristic in the process of FWMI designing should match with the mode interval of multi-longitudinal-mode laser to ensure consistent fine spectral discrimination for the return signal from each longitudinal mode laser.The principle and the realization way of the proposed multi-longitudinal-mode HSRL are illustrated in detail and the main factors which constrain the frequency discrimination characteristic of the FWMI in multi-longitudinal-mode HSRL are discussed quantitatively.The performance of the proposed technique is verified further at the wavelength of 1064 nm by computer simulation.The multi-longitudinal-mode HSRL technique can avoid the dependence of the current HSRLs on the single multi-longitudinal-mode lasers remarkably.The proposed technique can not only decrease the cost,volume and weight of the laser in HSRL,but also improve its stability notably,which is of great significance for airborne and satellite-borne HSRL development in our country.
Analysis of Calibration-Free Wavelength-Scanned Wavelength Modulation Spectroscopy for Practical Gas Sensing Using Tunable Diode Lasers

Abstract:A novel strategy has been developed for analysis of wavelength-scanned, wavelength modulation spectroscopy (WMS) with tunable diode lasers (TDLs). The method simulates WMS signals to compare with measurements to determine gas properties (e. g., temperature, pressure and concentration of the absorbing species). Injection-current-tuned TDLs have simultaneous wavelength and intensity variation, which severely complicates the Fourier expansion of the simulated WMS signal into harmonics of the modulation frequency (f(m)). The new method differs from previous WMS analysis strategies in two significant ways: (1) the measured laser intensity is used to simulate the transmitted laser intensity and (2) digital lock-in and low-pass filter software is used to expand both simulated and measured transmitted laser intensities into harmonics of the modulation frequency, WMS-nf(m) (n = 1, 2, 3, ...), avoiding the need for an analytic model of intensity modulation or Fourier expansion of the simulated WMS harmonics. This analysis scheme is valid at any optical depth, modulation index, and at all values of scanned-laser wavelength. The method is demonstrated and validated with WMS of H2O dilute in air (1 atm, 296 K, near 1392 nm). WMS-nf(m) harmonics for n = 1 to 6 are extracted and the simulation and measurements are found in good agreement for the entire WMS lineshape. The use of 1 f-normalization strategies to realize calibration-free wavelength-scanned WMS is also discussed.
Experimental and Simulated Study of Line-Shape Models for Measuring Spectroscopic Parameters Using the WM-DAS Method - Part I: Collisional Broadening and Absorption Coefficients of H2O-Ar System

Abstract:Wavelength modulation-direct absorption spectroscopy (WM-DAS) was used to investigate absorption line-shape models by measuring the H2O transition at 7299.431 cm(-1) in the nu(1) + nu(3) vibrational band perturbed by Ar. The partially Correlated quadratic Speed-dependent Hard-Collision profile (pCqSDHCP) was found to give the best fit with the smallest residuals. The Ar-induced broadening, narrowing coefficients and the absorption coefficients were measured using various profile models with comparisons to pCqSDHCP. The room-temperature pressure dependence of the measured parameters and their differences over the range from 0.3 kPa to 80 kPa (Lorentzian-to-Doppler broadening ratios from 0.06 to 3.5) were studied. The pCqSDHCP was also simulated and fit by the other simplified profiles to further explore the pressure dependence, which compares well with the experimental results. The pressure dependence of the broadening and absorption coefficients for Voigt profile (VP) were analyzed to provide the optimal pressure range when using VP to measure the spectroscopic parameters. The experimental and simulated results allow us to quantify the systematic errors in the pressure broadening and line intensity associated with simplified line shape models. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Molecules without well-resolved absorption spectra within a certain spectral range can be called broadband absorbers. Inspired by Wavelength Modulation Spectroscopy (WMS), we came up the idea of Wavelength Modulation United Absorption Spectroscopy (WM-UAS) for measuring broadband absorbers. WM-UAS commonly involves two gases, one is the probe gas, another is the target broadband absorber. The only request for implementing WM-UAS is that, within the spectral envelope of the broadband absorber, there exists more than one well-resolved absorption peak of the probe gas. To validate the effectiveness of WM-UAS, methanol was experimentally measured with water vapor as the probe gas. According to Allan deviation analysis, the detection limit was estimated as 1.7 ppm during the optimal average time of 5.4 s. For standard methanol vapor with a concentration of 100.9 ppm, the measurement error was about 1.3%@5.4 s, and for high purity nitrogen, the measurement result was 3.56 ppm@5.4 s. Abstract:Integrated absorbance (IA) can be used to infer gas temperature and concentration directly, in this paper, we proposed a new method that uses the 1st harmonic to measure the IA under low absorption conditions (<10%). Subsequently, a large number of numerical simulations are used to validate the reliability and accuracy of this method, and several absorption lines of CO2 and H2O molecules near 6981 cm(-1) are selected to determine the IA and species concentration in experiments. Abstract:Tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) for trace gas sensing has been investigated widely. Conventional wavelength-modulation spectroscopy (WMS) in TDLAS usually involves linear triangle patterns for tunable laser scanning. Here, a novel modified laser scanning technique is proposed and experimentally demonstrated in the WMS-based TDLAS gas sensor. The half-wave scan is primarily introduced to drive the laser diode to cover 1/2 range of the Lorentz-like gas absorption line. By monitoring waveform derivation of second harmonics, real-time status of the laser output could be exhibited and the output wavelength constancy can be controlled. It is also verified that second harmonics feature basically linearly with wavelength drifts, allowing the in-situ regulation of laser wavelength stability. Moreover, the nonlinear half-wave scan is introduced and designs a nonlinear function across the scanning pattern. It enlarges the temporal window around strong absorption and consequently acquires additional valuable waveform data. With the limited sampling rate for TDLAS signal processing, by using the nonlinear half-wave scan, second harmonics fluctuate merely 1/3 of that in the conventional WMS-2f linear scan. The proposed modified laser scanning technique is employed in a methane sensor, realizing about 3 ppm minimum detection limit and 9.6 ppm measurement accuracy. This technique is beneficial and universal for real-time monitoring and in-situ control of laser sources and improvement in accuracy and stability for current WMS-based TDLAS gas detection.

A high-accurate and universal method to characterize the relative wavelength response (RWR) in wavelength modulation spectroscopy (WMS).

Abstract:Considering the importance of the laser wavelength response and the difficulty in its real-scenario measurement in WMS, a high-accuracy and universal method was developed to characterize the relative wavelength response (RWR) by analyzing the laser current response. A coupling term that depends on both the current scan and the modulation characteristic was introduced to describe the coupling effect between the wavelength scan and modulation. The accuracy of the proposed method was verified with different laser working conditions and scan waveforms. All fitting residuals of the RWR result from the proposed method are smaller than 0.1% of the total scan range and the fitting residual of the ramp scanned WMS is twice smaller than the minimum value from literature. The better calibration-free 2f/1f fitting and more accurate CO2 concentration results also suggest the high accuracy and superiority of the proposed method. Finally, based on the precise prediction of RWR with small scan and modulation indices, the spectral parameters, including line strength and self-collisional broadening coefficient, of CO2 transition at 6976.2026 cm(-1) were successfully measured using WMS. Abstract:A general model for 1f-normalized wavelength modulation absorption spectroscopy with nf detection (i.e., WMS-nf) is presented that considers the performance of injection-current-tuned diode lasers and the reflective interference produced by other optical components on the line-of-sight (LOS) transmission intensity. This model explores the optimization of sensitive detection of optical absorption by species with structured spectra at elevated pressures. Predictions have been validated by comparison with measurements of the 1f-normalized WMS-nf (for n = 2–6) lineshape of the R(11) transition in the 1st overtone band of CO near 2.3 μm at four different pressures ranging from 5 to 20 atm, all at room temperature. The CO mole fractions measured by 1f-normalized WMS-2f, 3f, and 4f techniques agree with calibrated mixtures within 2.0 %. At conditions where absorption features are significantly broadened and large modulation depths are required, uncertainties in the WMS background signals due to reflective interference in the optical path can produce significant error in gas mole fraction measurements by 1f-normalized WMS-2f. However, such potential errors can be greatly reduced by using the higher harmonics, i.e., 1f-normalized WMS-nf with n > 2. In addition, less interference from pressure-broadened neighboring transitions has been observed for WMS with higher harmonics than for WMS-2f.
Analysis of Relative Wavelength Response Characterization and Its Effects on Scanned-Wms Gas Sensing*

Abstract:Our recently proposed three-step method showed the promising potential to improve the accuracy of relative wavelength response (RWR) characterization in the wavelength-modulation spectroscopy (WMS) over the commonly used summation method. A detailed comparison of the three-step method and the summation method, for the wavelength-scanned WMS gas-sensing, was performed with different laser parameters (modulation indexes and scan indexes) and gas properties (pressures and concentrations). Simulation results show that the accuracy of the predicted gas parameters is strongly limited by the RWR characterization with large modulation index and high gas pressure conditions. Both fitting residuals of RWR and errors of predicted gas parameters from the recently proposed three-step method are nearly 2 orders of magnitude smaller than those from the summation method. In addition, the three-step method is further improved by introducing a coupling term for the 2nd harmonic amplitude. Experiments with CO2 absorption transition at 6976.2026 cm−1 were conducted and validated the simulation analysis. The modified-three-step method presents an improved accuracy in RWR description with at least 5% smaller fitting residual for all conditions compared with the three-step method, although the deviation of the deduced CO2 concentrations between these two methods does not exceed 0.2%.
