Abstract:Although local existence of multidimensional planar shock waves has been established in the well-known papers [A. Majda, The Existence of Multi-Dimensional Shock Fronts, Mem. Amer. Math. Soc. 43, Providence, RI, 1983; A. Majda, The Stability of Multi-Dimensional Shock Fronts, Mem. Amer. Math. Soc. 41, Providence, RI, 1983; A. Majda and E. Thomann, Multidimensional shock fronts for second order wave equations, Comm. Partial Differential Equations, 12 (1987), pp. 777--828; G. Métivier, Stability of multidimensional shocks, in Advances in the Theory of Shock Waves, Progr. Nonlinear Differential Equations Appl. 47, Birkhäuser, Boston, MA, 2001, pp. 25--103], there are few results on the global existence of those waves except the ones for the unsteady potential flow equation in $n$-dimensional spaces ($n\ge 5$) or in special unbounded space-time domains with Dirichlet boundary value conditions of potentials. In this paper, we are concerned with both the local and global multidimensional conic shock wave problem of an unsteady potential flow equation when a pointed piston (i.e., the piston at the initial time degenerates into a single point) or an explosive wave expands fast in 2-dimensional or 3-dimensional polytropic gases. Mathematically, this problem is reduced to a boundary value problem of a multidimensional unsteady potential equation in a region which is bounded by two infinite cones, and thus the domain boundary includes a twofold conic point with strong singularity and the corresponding second order hyperbolic equation has no initial data in this domain. Meanwhile, the resulting nonlinear boundary conditions are of almost Neumann-type on the conic shock surface and of Neumann-type on the expanding surface of the piston, respectively. As observed in physical experiments or numerical computations, we shall show that this multidimensional shock wave solution not only exists locally but also exists globally in the whole time space and tends to a self-similar solution as $t\to\infty$.
