Performance of an Unsaturated Expansive Soil Slope Subjected to Artificial Rainfall Infiltration

Abstract:A major infrastructure project, the South-to-North Water Transfer Project, has been proposed to carry potable water from the Yangtze River region in the south to many arid and semi-arid areas in the northern regions of China, including Beijing. The proposed 1200 km ‘middle route’ of the project is likely to be an open channel with a trapezoidal cross-section. At least 180 km of the proposed excavated canal will pass through areas of unsaturated expansive soils. An 11 m high cut slope in a typical expansive clay with medium plasticity in Zaoyang, close to the ‘middle route’ in Hubei, was selected for a comprehensive and well-instrumented field study of the effects of rainfall infiltration. Two artificial rainfall events were created during a month of field investigation and monitoring. Prior to the rainfall events, high soil suction was measured within the top 1 m of soil. This high initial soil suction created an upward flux of water and moisture. The abundant cracks and fissures near the ground surface played a key role in the soil suction–water interaction. After the rainfall, there was a delayed response of about 2 days before any significant changes of pore water pressure, earth pressure and ground movement were measured. A perched water table was deduced at a depth of about 1·5 m below the slope surface. Two distinct modes of down-slope deformations were observed: a cantilever deformation within the top 1·5 m at the midslope, and a deep-seated down-slope displacement at the toe of the slope. The observed continual soil swelling after the start of the rainfall appears to be governed by the low coefficient of permeability to water and the expansive nature of the soil. After heavy and prolonged rainfalls, earth pressure measurements suggest that passive failures may take place within the softened clay at shallow depths.
The Mega South-To-North Water Transfer Project in China - Unsaturated Soil Mechanics Aspects

Abstract:The design and construction of the middle-route of China's mega South-to-North Water Transfer Project (SNWTP) has been started. The 1,427 km middle-route project is expected to transport potable water from the Yangtze River to Beijing. A canal with a trapezoidal cross-section formed by cut and fill slopes is proposed. The potential instability of these slopes passing through about 340 km unsaturated expansive soil zones imposes a major geotechnical challenge on the design and construction of the middle-route. A typical expansive soil cut slope, with and without grass cover, was therefore selected for a comprehensive and well-instrumented field study of the effects of rainfall infiltration. Artificial rainfall events were created during the field study. The performance of the slope in response to the changes in two independent stress variables (i.e., net stress and suction) was studied. The responses of a bare area and a grassed area on the selected slope were monitored and the influences of vegetation were investigated.

Abstract:Ten experimental plots,with different slope and covering rate of vegetation,in Shen-Dong mine region were selected to conduct simulated rainfall.The intensity of simulated rainfall was designed to be 2.0 mm/min.Four of these plots were accumulated with abandoned soils in the different years of 1990~1991,1996~1997,2002~2003 and the one primary soil,the others were accumulated with abandoned soils in the year of 1990~1991.Ten curves of infiltration process content were acquired by processing data.The results showed that the soils accumulated in different years had different infiltration process,and with the increasing of accumulation time,the stable infiltrations were declined gradually to be similar to primary soil.Grade and length of slope affected the infiltration process respectively,while the change of grade and slope length had little influences on the stable infiltrations.

Abstract:The ground movement of Xiashan village landside of Zhejiang province, China, commenced in 1958 due to typhoon rainstorms followed by two subsequent slips in 1989 and 2001. The reactivation of the large-scale landslide has become a serious concern to the safety of a nearby reservoir and the local villagers. A pilot testing program was established in 2007 using a variety of landslide monitoring facilities. The slope is of a chair-shaped form with Quaternary residual soil overlying the Pliocene sedimentary and basalt layers. The pilot test program included GPS, inclinometers of conventional and fixed types, piezometer, and rain gauge. Two potential sliding planes were identified in the inclinometers showing the possible slip mode along more than one bedding plane. A shallow slip surface dipping a low angle (10°) lies in the residual soil, while a deep slip surface is located along the weak plane within the Pliocene strata. The piezometer reading indicated high groundwater level and a certain level of correlation with the displacement velocity. A critical groundwater depth was determined, and its usage as a warning threshold was discussed. In view of the very important location about an existing dam, it is strongly recommended that surface and internal drainage facilities be provided to ensure the long-term stability of the landslide.

Abstract:The monitoring and evaluation on silt arrester system of small watersheds involves monitoring indicators, data collection, analysis and evaluation etc. The Yellow River Water Conservancy Committee carried out a "small watersheds of the Loess Plateau model project" from 2005 to 2010 in the Yellow River sandy area. The project has 12 small watershed silt arresters, one of which is in Yonghe county of Shanxi province. This article takes the work of sediment transport monitoring in Yonghe silt arrester system as an example and describes the monitoring method, content, and finally analyzes the influence of silt arrester system construction and sediment transport on ecological environment.

Abstract:Longfengshan Eeath-Rock Dam has running for a long time; the muddy water phenomenon has occurred seriously in the gutter. The muddy water phenomenon changed cyclically during the day. The atomic absorption spectrometry and the X-fluorescence spectrometry has been developed to analyze the chemical composition of water and precipitates in the drainage. The chemical constituents' evolution law of the dam foundation precipitates is researched. Research results show that the water is results rich in Ca and the precipitates are rich in Fe and Mn. In the period of groundwater seepage in the dam foundation, groundwater has physico chemical reaction with the rock foundation, leading to chemical corrosion. The chemical corrosion of groundwater seepage is closely related to the nature of the foundation rock. Basic rock category, because of the rich in iron, manganese, and other dark elements, was prone to migrate in the acidic environment. Fe2O3 and MnO2 flocculation-like sediment would appear in the gutter, resulting in the muddle waters phenomenon in the gutter.

Abstract:<p>There are an increasing number of mega engineering projects of removing the top of hills to fill in the valley for new land creation in the Loess Plateau of China, which significantly changes the hydrological and geological equilibrium state of the site. The formation of a new hydrological equilibrium state is associated with the water movement in the compacted and intact loess layers. Most disasters occurring in the loess area are related to water. The soil-water retention curve (SWRC) is the key to the implementation of unsaturated soil mechanics in engineering practice and is required to numerically model the movement of water in the soil. In this study, the SWRCs and microstructure of intact and compacted specimens from Lanzhou and Yan'an, two typical cities that have new land creation projects, are investigated. The SWRC is obtained using the filter paper method. The mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) techniques are used to explore the microstructure. The results highlight that the intact loess has a higher air occlusion value (AOV) and a similar slope of SWRC in the transition zone compared with the remolded specimens that compacted at the natural water content. The normalized SWRC (i.e., degree of saturation versus suction/AVO) of the intact specimen is approximately the same as the remolded specimens compacted as the natural water content. The difference in the microstructure between intact and compacted specimens originates from different existing states of the clay particles and further contributes to the variation of the SWRC.</p>

Abstract:The variation of scour and silt in Dujiangyan has an essential influence on the maintenance,water-sand-division of project,the irrigation and the digging load of Fengqiwo section.The variation of scour and silt at the estuary of Neijiang river is larger than that at the middle and downstream.The river bed has been scoured and silted frequently,while the impact of digging is limited.The variation of scour and silt at the estuary is anti-correlative to that at the hydrology station,it could be attributed to the hysteresis of the gravel motion.The variation of scour and silt at the hydrology station is correlative to that at Wotie section,so that the flow capability is equilibrium with the sediment transport in the middle and downstream of Neijiang river.The scour is greater with the increase of the total effect force of river.The flood in 1977 resulted in the section change of the main channel from left to right.The section 18-1 is transitional,and the following 5 sections has no obvious scour and silt.Thus this river section is basically stable.The research results of this paper provide the scientific support for the long-term safe-running of Dujiangyan project.

Abstract:Construction gully slope to terrace (STT) is one of soil and water conservation measure in Gully Consolidation and Highland Protection (GCHP) Project. If the design is unreasonable, not only can't play its due role, but even more severe soil erosion will occur. In order to quantify the relationship between drainage system of STT and soil erosion, this paper took Fengbao gully head in Dongzhi Plateau as a prototype, and analyzed the hydraulic erosion process of gully head with and without drainage system. Based on the actual precipitation in the area where the prototype is located, three groups of slopes (scenario 1 is an untreated slope, scenario 2 is only STT treatment, and scenario 3 is a STT with a relatively complete drainage system). A series of scouring experiments (flow rates of 0.43, 0.32, 0.86, 1.62, 1.24 and 0.32 m 3 /h) were carried out on the physical model. The results show that secondary geological disasters such as landslides and diarrhea are more likely to occur on the STT without drainage system than on the untreated slope. Having a relatively perfect drainage system can reduce the sediment concentration to a great extent. The sediment concentration produced by each scouring experiment in scenario 1 is 270.27%, 1018.63%, 479.21%, 250.38%, 556.78% and 151.18% higher than that in scenario 3, respectively. The sediment concentration produced by each scouring experiment in scenario 2 is 486.03%, 1625.21%, 536.96%, 959.29%, 158.94% and 316.67% higher than that in scenario 3, respectively. The sediment concentration fluctuated continuously with time, with multiple peaks and valleys. It is considered that the first few years of construction, if the slope surface after leveling is still exposed, the drainage pipe is suspended to drain and collect water, and the pipeline mouth is directly washed away, which may cause more serious erosion. This study can provide a scientific basis for soil and water conservation and ecological environment construction in the Loess Plateau and the health management of the GCHP Project.

Ecological Characteristics of Soil Water and Its Relations to Landform and Vegetation in A Small Semiarid Watershed in A Loess Hilly Area of China

Abstract:There is an urgent need to study soil water resources and eco-hydrological characteristics in depth so as to carry forward ecological environmental construction in the Loess Plateau. Soil moisture was measured to a depth of 5 m on 11 sites with different landforms and land uses in a transect of the Zhonglianchuan watershed during 2002. The watershed is located in the northern Yuzhong County, Gansu Province, and is part of a semiarid and loess hilly area. There were different types of soil moisture variations in 2002 on the 11 sites. Soil moisture contents were low on all sites, and the average water contents at 2 to 5-m depth were usually lower than 10% by weight, and the lowest water contents were found in slope land under Medicago sativa and Caragana korshinskii vegetation. The dry soil layer is common in this area, not only under planted vegetation but also under natural vegetation. The soil moisture in a slope segment or area can be increased by collecting and harvesting surface runoff from upslope areas. One effective way to collect runoff is by constructing level terraces, alternating with sloping lands. The proportion of various grasslands, acreage of alfalfa, and sustainable development of the region should be further studied in order to successfully convert cultivated land into grassland.
Study on the Simulation of Runoff and Sediment Yield on the Disturbed Lands During the Shenfu-Dongsheng Coalfield Exploitation

Abstract:The exploitation of the Shenfu-Dongsheng coalfield badly disturbed the intrinsic soil structure and destroyed the ground vegetation,which caused the severe soil and water losses.By using the field water discharge scouring experiment,the principle of soil erosion and sediment yield on the disturbed surface was studied.The results showed that on the slope of 5°,there was a power regression between sedimend yield and runoff amount for flow discharge of 15 L/min,20 L/min and 25 L/min,and a linear regression for 10 L/min.There was a linear regression between sediment yield and runoff amount for all flows on the slope of 11°.On 17° there was a logarithmic regression between sediment yield and runoff amount for 10 L/min and 15 L/min,and a linear regression for 20 L/min and 25 L/min.There was a logarithmic regression between sediment yield and slope gradient under 10 L/min and 25 L/min,and a linear regression under 15 L/min and 20 L/min.Compound relationships between sediment yield,runoff amount, flow discharge,and slop gradient were established.The results are very important to illustrate human activity influence on erosion sediment production and effectively reconstruct eco-environment.

Abstract:The Loess Plateau of China has experienced a lengthy drought and severe soil erosion. Changes in precipitation and land use largely determine the dynamics of runoff and sediment yield in this region. Trend and mutation analyses were performed on hydrological data (1981-2012) from the Yanwachuan watershed in the Loess Plateau Gully Region to study the evolution characteristics of runoff and sediment yield. A time-series contrasting method also was used to evaluate the effects of precipitation and soil and water conservation (SWC) on runoff and sediment yield. Annual sediment yield declined markedly from 1981 to 2012 although there was no significant change in annual precipitation and annual runoff. Change points of annual runoff and annual sediment yield occurred in 1996 and 1997, respectively. Compared with that in the baseline period (1981-1996), annual runoff and annual sediment yield in the change period (1997-2012) decreased by 17.0% and 76.0%, respectively, but annual precipitation increased by 6.3%. Runoff decreased in the flood season and normal season, but increased in the dry season, while sediment yield significantly declined in the whole study period. The SWC measures contributed significantly to the reduction of annual runoff (137.9%) and annual sediment yield (135%) and were more important than precipitation. Biological measures (forestland and grassland) accounted for 61.04% of total runoff reduction, while engineering measures (terraces and dams) accounted for 102.84% of total sediment yield reduction. Furthermore, SWC measures had positive ecological effects. This study provides a scientific basis for soil erosion control on the Loess Plateau.

Abstract:Field experiments were conducted on various runoff plots within the Zhangjiachong watershed, located in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area, to study rainfall‐runoff processes and sediment yields under different slope land use patterns. A hillslope run‐on model considering vegetation interception was used to simulate runoff generation and concentration. A slope erosion model including raindrop erosion, sheet erosion, and rill erosion was developed to estimate sediment yield and concentration. The parameters of both models were calibrated and validated using observed runoff and sediment yield data. The results show that the runoff simulations in the validation have relative errors below 20% for all runoff plots, except those planted with crops. The saturated hydraulic conductivity of soil was found to be ca. 10% higher on slope lands with hedgerows than those without. In addition, it was about 15% higher on slope lands with crops than on slope lands with tea plants and citrus. The sediment yield was shown to be influenced by both precipitation characteristics and antecedent sediment conditions. There was a significant relationship between sheet erosion, rill erosion, and vegetation coverage, while the amount of raindrop erosion was similar across different runoff plots. The proportions of sheet and rill erosion on slope land with crops were minimal whether hedgerows existed or not. The proportions of the three main forms of soil erosion on slope lands with tea plants and citrus were more or less the same under concentrated rainfall. For more evenly distributed rainfall, raindrop erosion was the primary form on slope lands with hedgerows‐tea plants and citrus. The proportions of sheet and rill erosion significantly increased on slope lands without hedgerows.

Abstract:More than two million people live on the floodplains along the middle and lower streams of the Yellow River. The rapid development of industry and agriculture on both sides of the Yellow River has caused serious pollution of the floodplain soil. Erosion by water has led to the destruction of the floodplain which has not only compressed people's living space but also resulted in a large amount of sediment containing heavy metals entering the river, aggravating water pollution. To further study the law governing the release of pollutants in soil, this work, based on field surveys of the Yellow River floodplain slopes from Wantan town to Liuyuankou, was focused on determining the failure mechanism and laws for the floodplain slope through the combination of a flume experiment and numerical calculations. The results showed that the floodplain slopes, composed of clay and silty sand, presented an interactive structure. Under the action of water erosion, the slope was first scoured to form a curved, suspended layer structure, and then the upper suspended layer toppled. The bank stability coefficient decreased by about 65% when the scour width increased from 0.07 m to 0.42 m, and the water content increased from 20% to 40%. For the failure characteristics, the angle of the failure surface was negatively correlated with the scour width, and the distance from the top failure surface to the bank edge was about 2.5 times that of the scour width.

Abstract:Based on the analysis of the water and sediment variation at Wuzhou station form 1955 to 2010 and the river bed deformation below Changzhou dam from 2002 to 2011,it is concluded that the runoff change was relatively stable,but the river sediment experienced three periods,and the sediment discharge and sediment concentration decreased sharply after 2003.Though the change happened before and after the construction of the Changzhou dam,the Changzhou dam was not the main reason for the decreased sediment concentration.And the dramatic deformation below Changzhou dam was more possibly caused by sand mining and channel regulation.
Simulation and scenario analysis of soil erosion in the Miyun Reservoir watershed

Abstract:The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) was applied to the Miyun Reservoir watershed to simulate soil erosion. Two tributaries within this watershed, the Chao and Bai rivers, were simulated separately and hydrological and soil erosion processes were calibrated and validated using observed data from downstream gauging stations. Data analyses and simulation results indicate that soil erosion in both sub-watersheds predominantly occurs during flood seasons, and soil erosion is closely correlated with the spatial distribution of rainfall. Although the Bai sub-watershed has a larger drainage area than the Chao sub-watershed, the former contributes less sediment to the Miyun Reservoir than the latter because two upstream reservoirs (Yunzhou and Baihepu) intercept upstream sediment. Several rainfall scenarios were set up to simulate the influence of changing rainfall patterns; as a result, key areas of soil erosion were identified.

Abstract:Abstract Hydrological processes play important roles in soil erosion processes of the hillslopes. This study was conducted to investigate the hydrological processes and the associated erosional responses on the purple soil slope. Based on a comprehensive survey of the Wangjiaqiao watershed in the Three Gorges Reservoir, four typical slope gradients (5°, 10°, 15°and 20°) were applied to five rainfall intensities (0.6, 1.1, 1.61, 2.12 and 2.54 mm·min -1 ). The results showed that both surface and subsurface runoff varied greatly depending on the rainfall intensity and slope gradient. Surface runoff volume was 48.1 to 280.1 times of that for subsurface runoff. The critical slope gradient was about 10°. The sediment yield rate increased with increases in both rainfall intensity and slope gradient, while the effect of rainfall intensity on the sediment yield rate was greater than slope gradient. There was a good linear relationship between sediment yield rate and Reynolds numbers, flow velocity and stream power, while Froude numbers, Darcy-Weisbach and Manning friction coefficients were not good hydraulic indicators of the sediment yield rate of purple soil erosion. Among the three good indicators (Re, v and w), stream power was the best predictor of sediment yield rate (R 2 = 0.884). Finally, based on the power regression relationship between sediment yield rate, runoff rate, slope gradient and rainfall intensity, an erosion model was proposed to predict the purple soil erosion (R 2 = 0.897). The results can help us to understand the relationship between flow hydraulics and sediment generation of slope erosion and offer useful data for the building of erosion model in purple soil.

Abstract:Landslides in loess slopes are mainly triggered by heterogeneity in hydrogeology. The southern Jingyang Plateau (China) was selected to characterize the geological structure and groundwater synergetic mechanisms that trigger landslides through groundwater–soil interactions. The study investigated hydrogeological and irrigation factors, the groundwater-perching effect of paleosols, the groundwater-conducting effect of fissures, and the damming effect of slide mass accumulation. A two-dimensional steady unsaturated numerical seepage model of a vertical section was established to simulate landslide evolution induced by irrigation and fissures. Long-term irrigation causes springs and weak zones to develop when the water table rises above the slope foot. Perched groundwater can lead superfluous water to migrate to the slope edge. The downward expansion of fissures and water migration can mutually cause extension of weak zones beneath fissures. A slip zone may appear when the weak zone connects to weaknesses at the slope foot, which forms a larger foot along the slope. Landslides occur frequently under the combined action of hydrostatic pressure from water-filled cracks, dynamic water pressure from a rising water table, and depressed sliding resistance caused by water enrichment in soil. After sliding, the slide mass will accumulate at the slope foot, blocking the original groundwater drainage point, so the water level may rise again, leading to subsequent landslides developing with new fissures and continued irrigation. Investigations in areas irrigated by groundwater wells showed that pumping can lower the water table in the soil and eliminate weak zones at the slope foot, effectively reducing the occurrence of landslides.
