Abstract:In this paper, we review some recent studies on compressible turbulence conducted by the authors’ group,which include fundamental studies on compressible isotropic turbulence（CIT） and applied studies on developing a constrained large eddy simulation（CLES） for wall-bounded turbulence. In the first part, we begin with a newly proposed hybrid compact–weighted essentially nonoscillatory（WENO） scheme for a CIT simulation that has been used to construct a systematic database of CIT. Using this database various fundamental properties of compressible turbulence have been examined, including the statistics and scaling of compressible modes, the shocklet–turbulence interaction, the effect of local compressibility on small scales, the kinetic energy cascade, and some preliminary results from a Lagrangian point of view. In the second part, the idea and formulas of the CLES are reviewed, followed by the validations of CLES and some applications in compressible engineering problems.

Abstract:The paper briefly reviews the progress in turbulence research in the 20th century and a number of issues are addressed based on achievements. The modern theroy of Navier-Stokes equation provides the theoretical basis for the development of turbulence research. The significance and bottle neck of DNS and the physical experiment in exploring turbulent flows are analyzed. The active manipulation of turbulence is directly guided by the knowledge of large-scale coherent structures. The existing problems in the large-eddy simulation are also pointed out. Scalar turbulence, which behaves quite different from fluid turbulence in many aspects, has drawn much attention in recent years. Besides the analysis of the difficulties in turbulence research, a number of examples are also presented to show how to use modern theory, computer and high technology to explore the nature of turbulence.

Abstract:In an endeavor to establish a connection between the mean velocity profile in compressible wall-bounded turbulence and its incompressible analogue, a refined version of the Trettel and Larsson’s (TL) transformation is systematically derived and rigorously assessed across diverse flow scenarios. Incorporating the recently proposed intrinsic compressibility effects and modeling the multi-layer structure of mixing lengths, the proposed transformation demonstrates exceptional performance in collapsing 57 canonical flow cases, including cooled channel and pipe flows, channel flows with pseudo heat sources, as well as adiabatic and diabatic boundary layer flows. Furthermore, the transformation seamlessly extends to low Reynolds number cooled channel and pipe flows, achieving a level of accuracy unparalleled by other transformations in the current state-of-the-art.

Abstract:Due to complexity of turbulence in curved duct and difficulty of free surface treatment,it is not easy to simulate three-dimensional motion of turbulence in curved duct precisely.In the case of turbulence in curved circular duct,VOF method is applied to track the flow surface and RNG k-e turbulent model is adopted to simulate the turbulence characteristics.The curvilinear free surface,velocity,turbulent kinetic energy and turbulent dissipation rate are obtained.The computational results are in good agreement with the experimental data on the basis of the comparison between them.

Abstract:Turbulence generated by vibrating grid is a kind of special turbulence,without mean flow and being isotropic in certain region.The turbulence can be easily controlled and is suitable for studying hydraulic problems involved in environmental engineering.This paper reviews the main research achievements of vibrating grid turbulence obtained recently and their applications.The main aspects of research are: 1.characteristics of turbulence structure;2.sediment transport in zero mean flow;3.mass transfer at the interface of air-fluid,solid-fluid or two fluid layers with different densities.The main conclusion and measurement methods are presented.Some new methods and research tendencies are also mentioned.

Abstract:One of the effective approaches to simulating laminar-turbulent transition flows is the transition/ turbulence modeling based on Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations.In this paper,its development is reviewed.First,we analyze the limitations of the so called low-Reynolds number turbulence models for transitional flows.These models,with modified damping functions for the viscous sublayer,seem to have some ability for transition prediction,while it is argued that it is just a chance coincident in numerical simulation. Second,the correlation-based transition models are discussed.These models,always constructed by considering the intermittency factor,take into account the physical mechanism of transition in some extent,thus can model the transition procedure in several simple flows.Unfortunately,it is not easy to make these models compatible with modern CFD methods because of the non-local variables in model equations.Thirdly,based completely on local variables,some recently proposed transition models related to the new transport equations of laminar kinetic energy,transitional momentum thickness,Reynolds number and other characteristic parameters are analyzed.Finally,the future challenges are pointed out.
Breakthrough in Modeling Turbulence for Aerody-namics Computations

Abstract:It is known that turbulence model is the most diffi-cult bottleneck for achieving high quality aerodynamics computations , or computational fluid dynamics ( CFD) . Here, we report the results of a 973 project, targeting in improving the understanding of mean flow properties of turbulence from a synthesized cooperation of theoreti-cal, experimental and computational efforts .Theoreti-cally , we have developed a new approach , called struc-tural ensemble dynamics ( SED) , which has achieved a breakthrough in finding solutions to modeling wall-bounded flows relevant to aerodynamics computations . The SED generalizes the Landau's mean-field theory to non-equilibrium situations by developing a concept of order function which obeys proper Lie-group symmetry. The theory predicts a multi-layer structure for general wall-bounded flows and develops a series of methods quantifying the multi-layer structure , yielding analytic prediction for mean velocity , mean kinetic energy and mean temperature .The predictions are in very good a-greement with empirical data from high precision experi-mental measurements and numerical simulations; the accuracy is unprecedented (99%).The most outstand-ing achievement is the identification of universal Kar-man constant, 0.45, for canonical wall-bounded flows ( channel, pipe and turbulent boundary layer ).The 973 project has also established a series of research platforms for performing compressible turbulence experi-ments and computations , and for aerodynamics CFD computations .These efforts have paved the way to de-veloping more sophisticated ( faster and more accurate ) CFD tools.
Progresses in Turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard Convection over Rough Surfaces

Abstract:Turbulent convection over a rough surface is a common scenario that one often encounters in nature and in many industrial processes. It is of great interest and especially useful to reveal the properties of this type of flow. In this paper, we present an overview of recent progresses in turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection over rough surfaces, including how surface roughness enhances/reduces the global heat transfer through the system, whether roughness could be used as a route to the ultimate regime of thermal convection. We also point out the main remaining issues and challenges and giving an outlook on the future development. Rough surface to affect the turbulent transport need to further research, based on exquisite measurement of boundary layers. Rough surface causes plumes generating and separating, and at the same time evolution of one-roll state and multi-roll state in the large scale circulation, is seldom studied. Structure of rough surface lead to symmetry influence on flow structure, which requires further probe.

Abstract:Understanding, modeling and control of the high-speed wall-bounded transition and turbulence not only receive wide academic interests but also are vitally important for high-speed vehicle design and energy saving because transition and turbulence can induce significant surface drag and heat transfer. The high-speed flows share some fundamental similarities with the incompressible counterparts according to Morkovin's hypothesis, but there are also significant distinctions resulting from multi-physics coupling with thermodynamics, shocks, high-enthalpy effects, and so on. In this paper, the recent advancements on the physics and modeling of high-speed wall-bounded transitional and turbulent flows are reviewed; most parts are covered by turbulence studies. For integrity of the physical process, we first briefly review the high-speed flow transition, with the main focus on aerodynamic heating mechanisms and passive control strategies for transition delay. Afterward, we summarize recent encouraging findings on turbulent mean flow scaling laws for streamwise velocity and temperature, based on which a series of unique wall models are constructed to improve the simulation accuracy. As one of the foundations for turbulence modeling, the research survey on turbulent structures is also included, with particular focus on the scaling and modeling of energy-containing motions in the logarithmic region of boundary layers. Besides, we review a variety of linear models for predicting wall-bounded turbulence, which have achieved a great success over the last two decades, though turbulence is generally believed to be highly nonlinear. In the end, we conclude the review and outline future works.

Abstract:The present paper aims at improving the modeling of turbulence for the upward turbulent bubbly flow through the use of experimental databases that contain data on small and large vertical ducts. First, the role of bubble-induced turbulence was analyzed, which indicated the dominant role of the bubble-induced turbulence in the duct center for relatively high void fraction cases. Therefore, the turbulence therein was mainly focused on, which indicated that the stronger turbulence could be induced by bubbles in large ducts with similar void fractions as compared to that in small ducts. Next, the turbulence of upward turbulent bubbly flow near the wall is discussed to understand the interaction between the wall-induced and bubble-induced turbulence. It showed that the existence of a wall could suppress the bubble-induced turbulence given the same void fraction, and the existence of bubbles could also suppress the solely wall-induced turbulence as compared to the single-phase turbulent flow, even though the total turbulence is enhanced. The above characteristics indicated that the current turbulence modeling method needs to be modified, especially when the bubble-induced turbulence plays a dominant role.
Unraveling the secrets of turbulence in a fluid puff

Abstract:Turbulent puffs are ubiquitous in everyday life phenomena. Understanding their dynamics is important in a variety of situations ranging from industrial processes to pure and applied science. In all these fields, a deep knowledge of the statistical structure of temperature and velocity space/time fluctuations is of paramount importance to construct models of chemical reaction (in chemistry), of condensation of virus-containing droplets (in virology and/or biophysics), and optimal mixing strategies in industrial applications. As a matter of fact, results of turbulence in a puff are confined to bulk properties (i.e. average puff velocity and typical decay/growth time) and dates back to the second half of the 20th century. There is thus a huge gap to fill to pass from bulk properties to two-point statistical observables. Here we fill this gap exploiting theory and numerics in concert to predict and validate the space/time scaling behaviors of both velocity and temperature structure functions including intermittency corrections. Excellent agreement between theory and simulations is found. Our results are expected to have profound impact to develop evaporation models for virus-containing droplets carried by a turbulent puff, with benefits to the comprehension of the airborne route of virus contagion.

Abstract:This paper reviews the problems and successes of computing turbulent flow. Most of the flow phenomena that are important to modern technology involve turbulence. The review is concerned with methods for turbulent flow computer predictions and their applications, and describes several of them. These computational methods are aimed at simulating either as much detail of the turbulent motion as possible by current computer power or, more commonly, its overall effect on the mean-flow behaviour. The methods are still being developed and some of the most recent concepts involved are discussed.Some success has been achieved with two-equation models for relatively simple hydrodynamic phenomena; indeed, routine design work has been undertaken during the last three decades in several applications of engineering practise, for which extensive studies have optimised these models.Failures are still common for many applications particularly those that involve strong curvature, intermittency, strong buoyancy influences, low-Reynolds-number effects, rapid compression or expansion, strong swirl, and kinetically-influenced chemical reaction. New conceptual developments are needed in these areas, probably along the lines of actually calculating the principal manifestation of turbulence, e.g. intermittency. A start has been made in this direction in the form of ‘multi-fluid’ models, and full simulations.The turbulence modelling approaches presented here are, Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS), two-fluid models, Very Large Eddy Simulation (VLES), Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes (URANS), Detached Eddy Simulation (DES) and some interesting, relatively recent, hybrid LES/RANS techniques.A large number of relatively recent studies are considered, together with reference to the numerical experiments existing on the subject.The authors hope that they provide the interested reader with most of the appropriate sources of turbulence modelling, exhibiting either as much detail as it is possible, by means of bibliography, or illustrating some of the most recent developments on the numerical modelling of turbulent flows. Thus, the potential user has the appropriate information, for him to select the suitable turbulence model for his own case of interest.

Abstract:Understanding inhomogeneous and anisotropic fluid flows require mathematical and computational tools that are tailored to such flows and distinct from methods used to understand the canonical problem of homogeneous and isotropic turbulence. We review some recent developments in the theory of inhomogeneous and anisotropic turbulence, placing special emphasis on several kinds of quasilinear approximations and their corresponding statistical formulations. Aspects of quasilinear theory that have received insufficient attention in the literature are discussed, and open questions are framed.
