Abstract:China has built up the longest, fastest and largest High-speed Rail (HSR) network in the world in only 7 years. Even though doubts and critics go along with its rapid development, Chinese HSR is still a successful case in terms of the implement of technology introduction, digestion and re-innovation strategy. Based on a long-term tracking study, the authors argue that, the achievements China has got in HSR industry since the introduction strategy in 2004 is significant. How does Chinese HSR industry grow so fast? How does the model of Indigenous Innovation with Chinese Characteristics influence the process? The answers to these questions would provide a reference framework for developing high technology in other industries and for implementing new catch-up strategies in other developing countries.

Abstract:Energy and environmental issues have become increasingly prominent in matters of transportation.Compared with road, air, and sea transportation, railway transportation has the advantages of a large transmission capacity, with rapid, safe, and on-time travel, requiring less land resources, with lower energy consumption, less environmental pollution, and the capacity to operate under most weather conditions.In particular, high-speed railway technology has been growing rapidly.Since the world's first high-speed railway was built in Japan in 1964, more than ten countries and regions have developed high-speed railways, operating over a total of more than 10 000 km. Abstract:After little more than a decade of development, China’s 29 000 km high-speed railway network is by far the largest in the world. This paper describes the technological advances and innovations regarding trains, stations, ballastless track, automatic train operation and signalling that made such rapid development possible, as well as setting new global standards for safety, efficiency and reliability. The engineering challenges of building and operating high-speed railways in diverse environments are also discussed, including areas with high winds, low temperatures, underground caverns and debris flows.

Abstract:The model of building core competence was proposed on the basis of establishment of innovation ecosystem. To exhibit the effectiveness of this model, the developing experience of China's high-speed railway industry was taken as an example. Based on an exploratory case study on the innovation ecosystem of China's high-speed railway industry, we identified three ecosystem stages, namely, the technology accumulation period, technology introduction period and independent innovation period. Through the three stages, China managed to achieve technology innovation and develop core technologies in this industry by firstly building an innovation ecosystem of the core competence of innovation stakeholders. In addition, theoretical and managerial implications were provided for building and managing innovation ecosystems in developing countries?dedicating a strong policy implication and guidance for developing countries to catch up and make independent innovations by following China's path.

Abstract:Conclusions The Beijing-Shanghai HSR is a flagship project amid the HSR engineering of China. It contributes to the building of the technological innovation platform and to that of the demonstration platform for project construction, operation and management. As it greatly improves the technology, equipment and standard systems for China's HSR, the project helps scale new heights for the nation's capacity for independent innovation. The high quality of the project has laid a robust foundation for its safe and efficient operation. Since its inauguration over a decade ago, the Beijing-Shanghai HSR has secured continuous growth in passenger traffic, consistent improvements in service quality, a strong commitment to safety and punctuality as well as sound performance in economic returns, setting a global benchmark for the commercial operation of HSRs.

Abstract:Significant progress has been achieved in the construction of transportation infrastructure in China, where a high-speed rail network of considerable scale and high operational speed has been formed. Against the backdrop of China's current keynote on "carbon peaking" and "carbon neutrality," the high-speed rail as a modern, green mode of transport, has become a key force in promoting green technological innovation and maintaining sustainable economic development. This paper focuses on the relationship between the opening of high-speed rail and urban green innovation and the mechanisms behind it. This study utilized panel data on Chinese cities from 2000 to 2018, taking the opening of high-speed rail as a quasi-natural experiment. It focuses on the impact and mechanism of the opening of the high-speed railway on urban green innovation by using the double-difference space Durbin model. Findings indicate that high-speed rail plays a significant role in promoting urban green innovation and that the spatial spillover effect is substantial. The results of the heterogeneity test indicate that high-speed rail can enhance urban green innovation in non-resource-based cities. The impact mechanism of high-speed railways on urban green innovation mainly comes from the flow of innovative personnel and capital, a strategy of local governments to strengthen environmental regulations and improve regional advantages. This paper also indicates that high-speed rail has an inverted U-shaped trend in promoting urban green innovation, and the optimal radius is 200 km from the nucleus city.

Abstract:Incorporated as a highly integrated system of science and technology that has been assimilated in the field of transportation, high-speed railways not only meet the green travel needs of people but also promote the development of correlated industries. Considering the differences in each stage, primarily based on the input-output table for 149 sectors from the Chinese economy taken from the year 2017, an input-output model has been developed and applied in order to measure the economic pull of high-speed railway construction investment for various industries. Moreover, the shift-share spatial structure model has also been taken into account to quantitatively analyze the effect of the high-speed railway operation on related industries, and the three high-speed railway hub cities of Zhengzhou, Xi’an, and Wuhan in China have been taken as the specimens for the application of this model. The results show that the construction and operation of a high-speed railway has an optimization effect on the development of related industries, which provides a basis for industrial layout and structural optimization. This research provides a reference for the formulation of high-speed rail industry policy, is of great significance for the maintenance of sustainable economic development, and thus, promotes the sustainable development of transportation systems, cities and society as a whole.

Abstract:The green economy is essential in supporting sustainable economic development and relies on talents and technologies. From the perspective of traditional economic theory, this study explores the impact of high-speed rail and innovation on the green economy from the perspectives of talent and technology. Using the data of 281 prefecture-level cities in China from 2008 to 2018, this study constructs empirical models to discuss the driving factors of the green economy. Empirical results show that high-speed rail and innovation can promote the development of a green economy, and the opening of high-speed rail can strengthen the positive association between innovation and a green economy. The accessibility of high-speed rail improves the flow of talent between different cities and greatly stimulates the positive impact of innovation on green economic activities. In the further test, this study explores the impact of high-speed rail and innovation on the green economy from different dimensions, including government policy, economic strength, and administrative level. During China's 12th Five-Year Plan, high-speed rail and innovation had a positive impact on the green economy, but the impact of innovation can still be significant after this period. Moreover, the opening of high-speed rail may motivate the migration of talents from developed cities to developing ones, while developed cities can rely on technological advantages to support green economic activities. Furthermore, low-administrative level cities will rely on attracting more talents to promote a green economy due to technological disadvantages. Innovation can play a critical role in enhancing the green economy of cities with high administrative levels. Talents and technology are both important to green economic activities, and the construction of high-speed rail changes the impact of technology on the green economy through the flow of talent. Our findings can explain why the opening of high-speed rail can promote the development of a green economy and effectively help governments achieve the goal of sustainable development.

Abstract:This study examines the impact of China’s high-speed rail (HSR) network on regional innovation cooperation examining the impact on intercity patent rights transactions in 2016 between 81,510 city-pairs. It shows that (1) China’s intercity technology transfer network assumes a national-scale ‘diamond structure’; (2) China’s HSR network had a robust positive effect on intercity technology transfer; and (3) these impacts are direct and indirect operating through impacts on geographical proximity, industrial proximity, innovative proximity and technology complementarity. These findings broaden our understanding of the association between transport infrastructure and innovation networks in large emerging economies.

Abstract:Transportation has long been shown to produce real impacts on productivity, urbanization, and economic growth, among others, companying with which innovation might take place. However, extant literature provides limited evidence on the companion innovation hypothesis of transportation improvement. The fast rollout of high-speed rail (HSR) in China is explored as a natural experiment to identify that hypothesis by matching it with three waves of innovation surveys on manufacturing firms from the Yangtze River Delta and Pearl River Delta, China’s two most developed regions. The empirical results, obtained using the difference in differences method, show that HSR connection promotes firm innovation in peripheral areas, which are larger in the Yangtze River Delta, which increases over time but switches from process innovation to product innovation and stands under various robustness checks. Further studies show that HSR connection promotes innovation by arousing entrepreneurs’ recognition of the importance of innovation and property rights protection, opening new sources for innovation and bringing about market size effects.

Abstract:This paper analyzes the impact of high-speed train construction on enterprise innovation and its specific mechanisms by establishing high-speed train-city-firm level panel data and constructing a multi-period DID model in China. The results show that, firstly, the construction of a high-speed train significantly improves the innovation level of enterprises, and the construction of the first high-speed train can increase the number of patents of local listed enterprises by about 11.5%. Second, the impact of high-speed train construction on the innovation level of listed enterprises is mainly through the internal human capital and external marketization of enterprises. Specifically, the high-speed train construction affects innovation by weakening the transportation distance; on the other hand, it improves the external market environment and enhances the market competition, making firms seek innovation actively.

Abstract:This research uses a two-way fixed effect model to examine the correlation between the development of high-speed rail and the growth of green technology innovation by adopting the panel data of 284 Chinese cities between 2004 and 2013. The empirical results show that the supply of high-speed rail services has a significant promoting influence on the advance of urban green technology innovation capabilities. In particular, cities located in central and western China, along with those cities with relatively little government support or relatively backward public cultural infrastructure, have more chances to benefit from the supply of high-speed rail services. In addition, by employing a mediating effect model, this article finds that the industrial collaborative agglomeration plays an important mediating role between high-speed rail and regional green technology innovation. Therefore, this article suggests that the Chinese central government should continue to accelerate the construction of the rapid transportation network and expand the coverage of high-speed rail services in China to increase the growth of green technology innovation and achieve steady and sustained economic growth in China. Meanwhile, local governments should actively guide the collaborative agglomeration of manufacturing and related producer service industries under local conditions to stimulate the expansion of the green technology innovation market.

Abstract:Abstract The construction of high-speed rail engineering brings not only the convenience of lifestyle, but also accelerates the flow of talents, capital and other resource elements, thus promoting the improvement of corporate performance. This paper takes the four vertical and four horizontal high-speed railway lines constructed in 2009-2014 as a quasi-natural experiment, adopts the double difference model, and introduces enterprise innovation management as an intermediary variable to examine and evaluate the economic effects brought by high-speed rail engineering construction to enterprises from a microscopic point of view. The results show that the construction of high-speed rail projects mainly improves the management performance of enterprises by promoting the flow of talents and stimulating the innovation management of enterprises. The conclusions of this paper help to deepen the analysis of the economic effects of high-speed rail construction, and provide a reference for the country to further accelerate the construction of high-speed rail and promote the regional economic development with the help of high-speed rail construction.

Abstract:With the advent of the era of high-speed rail, the development pattern of China's tourism industry has been quietly changed, and high-speed rail tourism industry has emerged. And the tourism development of high-speed rail in China under the background of the current "time-space compression", is facing great opportunities and challenges, embodied in the rapid development of high-speed railway to improve the accessibility of tourist destination, along the integration of the tourism resources, but also there is a high iron tourist publicity and lack of innovation, the corridor effect and siphon effect and a series of problems. Therefore, in order to achieve sustainable development in the context of space-time compression, various tourism destinations, tourism enterprises and other stakeholders should take the initiative to integrate into the network transportation system and break through the path constraints of conventional development through path innovation. This paper mainly puts forward Suggestions from three aspects: intelligent transportation, tourism space and high-speed railway characteristic tourism, providing references for realizing the path innovation of highspeed railway tourism development in China.

The influence of high-speed rails on urban innovation and the underlying mechanism

Abstract:Innovation is intrinsically dependent on the construction of local infrastructure. Using panel data on 285 cities in China, we empirically examined the impact of high-speed rails on urban innovation and the mechanism underlying this effect. We found that high-speed rails significantly increase urban innovation. In our analysis, high-speed rails were found to increase the agglomeration of innovation factors, including population and investment, which in turn increase urban technological innovation. The agglomeration of investment factors brought about by high-speed rails is the main source of the improvement in urban innovation. Through the use of a spatial panel model, we found that high-speed rails promote knowledge dissemination and technology spillovers among the cities along high-speed railways, thus improving their innovation levels. However, the existing effects of high-speed rails on innovation exhibit spatial heterogeneity. We confirmed the effect of high-speed rails on innovation and explored the mechanism underlying this effect by considering the effects of factor agglomeration and knowledge spillovers. Our conclusions can be used as a resource by policymakers to stimulate knowledge and technology diffusion, which in turn cultivates and stimulates urban innovation.
