Study on the living arrangement and adult children′s support to older parents

Abstract:Objective To examine the living arrangements and adult children's support to their older parents in Beijing.Methods The descriptive analysis and Probit regression model were used to explore the relationship between older people's living arrangement and daily informal care,as well as financial support from the adult children.Results Co-residence would increase the probability of adult children's caregiving for their older parents,as well as the probability of their financial support.The proportion of older people who received daily infor-mal care in forms of co-residing and not co-residing with their adult children were 79.85 per cent and 47.31 per cent respectively ( P<0.001),and the proportion for the financial support was 32.69 per cent and 26.66 per cent respectively(P<0.001).With other factors being equal,compared with none co-residence,the probability that the older people who involved co-residence with adult children received the daily informal care and financial support increased 32.2 per cent(P<0.01)and 3.2 per cent(P<0.05)respectively.Conclusions Recently,co-residence which presents the function of family old-age support in terms of daily informal care and financial support has still been the most beneficial living arrangement for the older adults.
