Abstract:Efficient and cost-effective solar steam generation requires self-floating evaporators which can convert light into heat, prevent unnecessary heat loss and greatly accelerate evaporation without solar concentrators. Currently, the most efficient evaporators (efficiency of ∼80% under 1 sun) are invariably built from inorganic materials, which are difficult to mold into monolithic sheets. Here, we present a new polymer which can be easily solution processed into a self-floating monolithic foam. The single-component foam can be used as an evaporator with an efficiency at 1 sun comparable to that of the best graphene-based evaporators. Even at 0.5 sun, the efficiency can reach 80%. Moreover, the foam is mechanically strong, thermally stable to 300 °C and chemically resistant to organic solvents.

Abstract:Solar‐powered interfacial evaporation has emerged as an innovative and sustainable technology for clean water production and it has motivated the design and fabrication of monolithic three‐dimensional steam generators and related hybrid applications. However, the existing porous and hydrophilic 3D scaffolds fabricated via conventional processing techniques remain one of the main roadblocks toward scalable and mass applications. Herein, a series of closed‐cell 3D polymer foams are developed via a "rotating" gas‐foaming technique. Monopile supporting structures with reticulated and hydrophilic gas pockets are formed in the 3D foams, resulting in controlled shapes and heights, ultralight weight, efficient water diffusion and optimized solar and environmental energy input. Gratifyingly, the 3D foam with a selected height of 12 cm attains an outstanding water evaporation rate of 5.8 kg m−2 h−1 under 1 sun. Furthermore, selected photothermal, adsorbent and photocatalytic materials on the 3D foam introduce water remediation beyond clean water production, exhibiting organic pollutant removal efficiencies over 90% in indoor and outdoor experiments. This work demonstrates an ease‐of‐mold approach to shape‐controlled fabrication of polymer foams and highlights their intriguing properties for solar‐powered hybrid applications such as organic pollutant removal in wastewater. Abstract:Solar-driven interfacial steam generation is a promising technique for clean water production because it can minimize thermal loss by localizing solar-to-heat conversion at the air/liquid interface. Here we report an integrated solar evaporator by partially growing 2D polypyrrole microsheets within a melamine foam through chemical vapor polymerization. These microsheets can induce multiple light reflections within the foam, enable omnidirectional light absorption, provide abundant surfaces to promote heat transfer, and achieve spatially defined hydrophobicity to facilitate vapor escape. Meanwhile, the inherent hydrophilicity of the bottom part of the foam promotes spontaneous upward water transport and suppresses heat loss. The composite foam exhibits an excellent apparent evaporation rate of ∼2 kg/(m<sup>2</sup>·h) and solar-to-vapor efficiency of ∼91%. Abstract:The foam-structured reactor is one which has hitherto been regarded as of great potential for industrial applications in the field of solar thermochemistry. The utilization mode of ceramic foam has, generally, a significant impact on energy conversion and storage efficiency. This study establishes a numerical model, coupled with computational fluid dynamics and dry reforming of methane reaction kinetics, to find the optimal structural parameters of the ceramic foam. A local thermal non-equilibrium model coupled with the P1 approximation has been developed to address the heat-transfer problems, and the non-Darcy flow effect has been considered to calculate the momentum dissipation in the porous zone. Based on ample simulation examples, the effects of porosity and foam cell size on the reaction temperature, surface heat loss, thermal efficiency, CH4/CO2 conversion, H2/CO yield, carbon deposition, and solar-to-chemical efficiency are illustrated in detail. The results indicate that using the ceramic foam with high porosity and large cell size is able to attain the best thermochemical characteristics, of which the validity can be assured, insofar as the various operating conditions in this study are concerned. Furthermore, as compared to the best single-layer structure, the application of the optimized double-layer foam structure is a more effective solution, which is able to further improve the energy storage efficiency by a remarkable 9.23%.

Abstract:Solar steam generation is a promising way for the harvesting and conversion of solar illumination. Heat localization systems have opened a new route to enhance the solar steam efficiency with localizing the absorbed solar energy and minimizing the heat losses. Many carbon-based, organic and plasmonic absorbers have been developed to achieve high-efficiency vapor evaporation in the past years. To provide a low cost and operability strategy, the carbonized rice husk, a biogenic carbon, is first used to construct a three-dimensional (3D) foam absorber in this paper. By employing surfactant foaming method, many micron pore channels are formed to ensure convenient water transfer. Meanwhile, due to the multiple internal reflections of light-rays in these cross pores, the light absorption can be enhanced up to similar to 92%. Under a solar intensity of 1 kW m(-2), the foam absorber achieves a solar steam conversion efficiency at similar to 71%. This work not only represents an original exploration concerning with carbonized rice husk absorber, but also provides a possible strategy for the exploitation of other powdery solar-thermal agents in this field.
