Quantum Correction and the Moduli Spaces of Calabi-Yau Manifolds

Abstract: We define the quantum correction of the Teichm\"uller space $\mathcal{T}$ of Calabi-Yau manifolds. Under the assumption of no weak quantum correction, we prove that the Teichm\"uller space $\mathcal{T}$ is a locally symmetric space with the Weil-Petersson metric. For Calabi-Yau threefolds, we show that no strong quantum correction is equivalent to that, with the Hodge metric, the image $ \Phi(\mathcal{T})$ of the Teichm\"uller space $\mathcal{T}$ under the period map $\Phi$ is an open submanifold of a globally Hermitian symmetric space $W$ of the same dimension as $\mathcal{T}$. Finally, for Hyperk\"ahler manifold of dimension $2n \geq 4$, we find both locally and globally defined families of $(2,0)$ and $(2n,0)$-classes over the Teichm\"uller space of polarized Hyperk\"ahler manifolds.
Calabi-Yau Geometry and Higher Genus Mirror Symmetry

Abstract:We study closed string mirror symmetry on compact Calabi-Yau manifolds at higher genus. String theory predicts the existence of two sets of geometric invariants, from the A-model and the B-model on Calabi-Yau manifolds, each indexed by a non-negative integer called genus. The A-model has been mathematically established at all genera by the Gromov-Witten theory, but little is known in mathematics for B-model beyond genus zero. We develop a mathematical theory of higher genus B-model from perturbative quantization techniques of gauge theory. The relevant gauge theory is the Kodaira-Spencer gauge theory, which is originally discovered by Bershadsky-Cecotti-Ooguri-Vafa as the closed string field theory of B-twisted topological string on Calabi-Yau three-folds. We generalize this to Calabi-Yau manifolds of arbitrary dimensions including also gravitational descendants, which we call BCOV theory. We give the geometric description of the perturbative quantization of BCOV theory in terms of deformation-obstruction theory. The vanishing of the relevant obstruction classes will enable us to construct the higher genus B-model. We carry out this construction on the elliptic curve and establish the corresponding higher genus B-model. Furthermore, we show that the B-model invariants constructed from BCOV theory on the elliptic curve can be identified with descendant Gromov-Witten invariants on the mirror elliptic curve. This gives the first compact Calabi-Yau example where mirror symmetry can be established at all genera. iv

Abstract:We show how the Landau-Ginzburg/Calabi-Yau correspondence for the quintic three-fold can be cast into a global mirror symmetry framework. Then we draw inspiration from Berglund-H\"ubsch mirror duality construction to provide an analogue conjectural picture featuring all Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces within weighted projective spaces and certain quotients by finite abelian group actions.
The S" fixed points in Quot-schemes

Abstract:We describe the S*-action on the Quot-scheme Quot (8”) associated to the trivial bundle &"= CP x C". In particlular, the topology of the S*-fixed-point components in Quot (8”) and the S*-weights of the normal bundle of these components are worked out. Mirror Principle, as developed by three of the current authors in the series of work [LL-Y1, I, II, III, IV], is a method for studying certain intersection numbers on a stable map moduli space. As an application, in Mirror Principle III, Sec 5.4, an outline was given in the case of genus zero with target a flag manifold. The results on S'fixed points in this paper are used here to do explicit Mir-ror Principle computations in the case of Grassmannian manifolds. In fact, Mirror Principle computations involve only a certain distinguished subcol-lection of the S*-fixed-point components. These components are identified and are labelled by Young tableaus. The S*-equivariant Euler class es1 of the normal bundle to these components is computed. A diagrammatic rule that allows one to write down es1 directly from the Young tableau is given. From this, the aforementioned intersection numbers on the moduli space of stable maps can be worked out. Two examples are given to illustrate our method. Using the method, the A-model for Calabi-Yau complete intersections in a Grassmannian manifold can now also be computed explicitly. This work is motivated by the intention to provide further details of mirror principle and to understand the relation of mirror principle to physical theory. Some related questions are listed for further study.

Abstract:This note briefly reviews the Mirror Principle as developed in the series of papers (19)(20)(21)(22)(23). We illustrate this theory with a few new examples. One of them gives an intriguing connection to a problem of counting holomorphic disks and annuli. This note has been submitted for the proceedings of the Workshop on Strings, Duality and Geometry the C.R.M. in Montreal of March 2000.

Abstract:We construct a global B-model for any quasi-homogeneous polynomial f that has properties similar to the properties of the physic's B-model on a Calabi-Yau manifold. The main ingredients in our construction are K. Saito's theory of primitive forms and Givental's higher genus reconstruction. More precisely, we consider the moduli space M-mar degrees of the so-called marginal deformations of f . For each point sigma is an element of M-mam degrees mar we introduce the notion of an opposite subspace in the twisted de Rham cohomology of the corresponding singularity f(sigma) and prove that opposite subspaces are in one-to-one correspondence with the splittings of the Hodge structure in the vanishing cohomology of f(sigma). Therefore, according to M. Saito, an opposite subspace gives rise to a semi-simple Frobenius structure on the space of miniversal deformations of f(sigma). Using Givental's higher genus reconstruction we define a total ancestor potential A(sigma) ((h) over bar, q) whose properties can be described quite elegantly in terms of the properties of the corresponding opposite subspace. For example, if the opposite subspace corresponds to the splitting of the Hodge structure given by complex conjugation, then the total ancestor potential is monodromy invariant and it satisfies the BCOV holomorphic anomaly equations. The coefficients of the total ancestor potential could be viewed as quasi-modular forms on M-Mar degrees in a certain generalized sense. As an application of our construction, we consider the case of a Fermat polynomial W that defines a Calabi-Yau hypersurface X-w in a weighted-projective space. We have constructed two opposite subspaces and proved that the corresponding total ancestor potentials can be identified with respectively the total ancestor potential of the orbifold quotient X-W/(G) over tilde (W) and the total ancestor potential of FJRW invariants corresponding to (W, G(W)). Here G(W) is the maximal group of diagonal symmetries of W and (G) over tilde (W) is a quotient of G(W) by the subgroup of those elements that act trivially on X-W. In particular, our result establishes the so-called Landau-Ginzburg/Calabi-Yau correspondence for the pair (W, G(W)).

Abstract:We study some arithmetic properties of the mirror maps and the quantum Yukawa couplings for some 1-parameter deformations of Calabi-Yau manifolds. First we use the Schwarzian differential equation, which we derived previously, to characterize the mirror map in each case. For algebraic K3 surfaces, we solve the equation in terms of theJ-function. By deriving explicit modular relations we prove that some K3 mirror maps are algebraic over the genus zero function fieldQ(J). This leads to a uniform proof that those mirror maps have integral Fourier coefficients. Regarding the maps as Riemann mappings, we prove that they are genus zero functions. By virtue of the Conway-Norton conjecture (proved by Borcherds using Frenkel-Lepowsky-Meurman's Moonshine module), we find that these maps are actually the reciprocals of the Thompson series for certain conjugacy classes in the Griess-Fischer group. This also gives, as an immediate consequence, a second proof that those mirror maps are integral. We thus conjecture a surprising connection between K3 mirror maps and the Thompson series. For threefolds, we construct a formal nonlinear ODE for the quantum coupling reduced modp. Under the mirror hypothesis and an integrality assumption, we derive modp congurences for the Fourier coefficients. For the quintics, we deduce, (at least for 5×d) that the degreed instanton numbersnd are divisible by 53 — a fact first conjectured by Clemens.

Abstract:A bstract We study a class of quantum integrable systems derived from dimer graphs and also described by local toric Calabi-Yau geometries with higher genus mirror curves, generalizing some previous works on genus one mirror curves. We compute the spectra of the quantum systems both by standard perturbation method and by Bohr-Sommerfeld method with quantum periods as the phase volumes. In this way, we obtain some exact analytic results for the classical and quantum periods of the Calabi-Yau geometries. We also determine the differential operators of the quantum periods and compute the topological string free energy in Nekrasov-Shatashvili (NS) limit. The results agree with calculations from other methods such as the topological vertex.

Quantum BCOV theory on Calabi-Yau manifolds and the higher genus B-model

Abstract: Bershadsky-Cecotti-Ooguri-Vafa (BCOV) proposed that the B-model of mirror symmetry should be described by a quantum field theory on a Calabi-Yau variety, which they called the Kodaira-Spenser theory (we call it the BCOV theory). This is the first of three papers in which we construct and analyze the quantum BCOV theory. In this paper, we construct the classical field theory on a Calabi-Yau variety of arbitrary dimension; define what it means to give a quantization; analyze the relation Givental's symplectic formalism for Gromov-Witten theory; prove uniqueness of the quantization on an elliptic curve; and prove the Virasoro constraints on an elliptic curve. The second paper (arXiv:1112.4063) proves that the partition function of the quantum BCOV theory on the elliptic curve is equivalent to the Gromov-Witten theory of the mirror elliptic curve. The third paper, in progress, constructs the quantum BCOV theory on a general Calabi-Yau.

Symmetry Integrability and Geometry Methods and Applications

Abstract:This is a brief summary of our works [arXiv:1112.4063, arXiv:1201.4501] on constructing higher genus B-model from perturbative quantization of BCOV theory. We analyze Givental's symplectic loop space formalism in the context of B-model geometry on Calabi-Yau manifolds, and explain the Fock space construction via the renormalization techniques of gauge theory. We also give a physics interpretation of the Virasoro constraints as the symmetry of the classical BCOV action functional, and discuss the Virasoro constraints in the quantum theory.

Abstract:In this paper we briefly discuss some of our recent results in the study of moduli space of Riemann surfaces. It is naturally divided into two parts, one about the differential geometric aspect, another on the topological aspect of the moduli spaces. To understand the geometry of the moduli spaces we introduced new metrics, studied in detail all of the known classical complete metrics, especially the Kähler-Einstein metric. As a corollary we proved that the logarithmic cotangent bundle of the moduli space is strictly stable in the sense of Mumford. The topological results we obtained were motivated by conjectures from string theory. We will describe in this part our proofs by localization method of the Mariño-Vafa formula, its two partition analogue as well as the theory of topological vertex and the simple localization proofs of the ELSV formula and the Witten conjecture. The applications of these formulas in Gromov-Witten theory and string duality will also be mentioned.

Abstract:We develop the quantum Kodaira-Spencer theory on the elliptic curve and establish the corresponding higher genus B-model. We show that the partition functions of the higher genus B-model on the elliptic curve are almost holomorphic modular forms, which can be identified with partition functions of descendant Gromov-Witten invariants on the mirror elliptic curve. This gives the first compact Calabi-Yau example where mirror symmetry is established at all genera.

Abstract:We study moduli spaces of nonlinear sigma-models on Calabi-Yau manifolds, using the one-loop semiclassical approximation. The data being parameterized includes a choice of complex structure on the manifold, as well as some ``extra structure'' described by means of classes in H^2. The expectation that this moduli space is well-behaved in these ``extra structure'' directions leads us to formulate a simple and compelling conjecture about the action of the automorphism group on the K\"ahler cone. If true, it allows one to apply Looijenga's ``semi-toric'' technique to construct a partial compactification of the moduli space. We explore the implications which this construction has concerning the properties of the moduli space of complex structures on a ``mirror partner'' of the original Calabi-Yau manifold. We also discuss how a similarity which might have been noticed between certain work of Mumford and of Mori from the 1970's produces (with hindsight) evidence for mirror symmetry which was available in 1979. Modular Calabi-Yau Fourfolds and Connections to M-Theory Fluxes

Abstract:In this work, we study the local zeta functions of Calabi-Yau fourfolds. This is done by developing arithmetic deformation techniques to compute the factor of the zeta function that is attributed to the horizontal four-form cohomology. This, in turn, is sensitive to the complex structure of the fourfold. Focusing mainly on examples of fourfolds with a single complex structure parameter, it is demonstrated that the proposed arithmetic techniques are both applicable and consistent. We present a Calabi-Yau fourfold for which a factor of the horizontal four-form cohomology further splits into two pieces of Hodge type $(4,0)+(2,2)+(0,4)$ and $(3,1)+(1,3)$. The latter factor corresponds to a weight-3 modular form, which allows expressing the value of the periods in terms of critical values of the L-function of this modular form, in accordance with Deligne's conjecture. The arithmetic considerations are related to M-theory Calabi-Yau fourfold compactifications with background four-form fluxes. We classify such background fluxes according to their Hodge type. For those fluxes associated to modular forms, we express their couplings in the low-energy effective action in terms of L-function values.

On the B-twisted Topological Sigma Model and Calabi-Yau Geometry

Abstract:We provide a rigorous perturbative quantization of the B-twisted topological sigma model via a first order quantum field theory on derived mapping space in the formal neighborhood of constant maps. We prove that the first Chern class of the target manifold is the obstruction to the quantization via Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism. When the first Chern class vanishes, i.e. on Calabi-Yau manifolds, the factorization algebra of observables gives rise to the expected topological correlation functions in the B-model. We explain a twisting procedure to generalize to the Landau-Ginzburg case, and show that the resulting topological correlations coincide with Vafa's residue formula.

Abstract:This paper presents the current status on modularity of Calabi-Yau varieties since the last update in 2003. We will focus on Calabi-Yau varieties of dimension at most three. Here modularity refers to at least two different types: arithmetic modularity and geometric modularity. These will include: (1) the modularity (automorphy) of Galois representations of Calabi-Yau varieties (or motives) defined over Q or number fields, (2) the modularity of solutions of Picard--Fuchs differential equations of families of Calabi-Yau varieties, and mirror maps (mirror moonshine), (3) the modularity of generating functions of invariants counting certain quantities on Calabi-Yau varieties, and (4) the modularity of moduli for families of Calabi-Yau varieties.

Abstract:First, I will quickly recall some of the basic elements of the minimal model program. Then, I concentrate on the interactions between the minimal model program and some moduli problems. In particular, I explain the construction of moduli spaces of varieties of general type via the minimal model program. Abstract. The Hecke symmetry is a salient feature of Shimura varieties. In the more recent past these symmetries have led to the notion of leaves, a global structure on the reduction of modular varieties of PEL type defined by Oort, and conjecturally for all Shimura varieties with good reduction. The Hecke symmetry also led to the notion of canonical coordinates on leaves, generalizing the classical Serre-Tate coordinates. We will discuss some recent works related to the Hecke symmetry : (1) -adic and p-adic monodromy of leaves, and irreducibility of leaves (joint work with F. Oort). One of the methods for showing that the p-adic monodromy is big is inspired by H. Hida. (2) CM lifting modulo Hecke symmetry (joint work with B. Conrad and F. Oort). Abstract. In this lecture we explain how to attach a p-adic representation to a vector bundle with strongly semistable reduction of degree zero on a p-adic curve. We also discuss higher dimensional generalizations. This is a report on joint work with Annette Werner. Abstract. Since the proof of Iwasawa's main conjecture in the classical case (the- orem of Mazur and Wiles), automorphic forms on GL(2) have played an essential role to understand GL(1)-problems. After the breakthrough by A. Wiles ((1)), there has been a substantial progress in the class field theory for GL2. In this talk, open problems in classical Iwasawa theory are discussed from this perspective, based on Galois deformations.
Closed-String Mirror Symmetry for Log Calabi-Yau Surfaces

Abstract:This paper establishes closed-string mirror symmetry for all log Calabi-Yau surfaces with generic parameters, where the exceptional divisor are sufficiently small. We demonstrate that blowing down a $(-1)$-divisor removes a single geometric critical point, ensuring that the resulting potential remains a Morse function. Additionally, we show that the critical values are distinct, which implies that the quantum cohomology $QH^{\ast}(X)$ is semi-simple.
