Abstract:Augmented reality (AR) technology has been applied in various areas, such as large-scale manufacturing, national defense, healthcare, movie and mass media and so on. An important way to realize AR display is using computer-generated hologram (CGH), which is accompanied by low image quality and heavy computing defects. Meanwhile, the diffraction of Liquid Crystal on Silicon (LCoS) has a negative effect on image quality. In this paper, a modified algorithm based on traditional Gerchberg-Saxton (GS) algorithm was proposed to improve the image quality, and new method to establish experimental system was used to broaden field of view (FOV). In the experiment, undesired zero-order diffracted light was eliminated and high definition 2D image was acquired with FOV broadened to 36.1 degree. We have also done some pilot research in 3D reconstruction with tomography algorithm based on Fresnel diffraction. With the same experimental system, experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of 3D reconstruction. These modifications are effective and efficient, and may provide a better solution in AR realization.

Abstract:One of the challenges that has been faced by holographic 3D display is the lack of 3D contents. To deal with the shortage of 3D contents, a 2D-to-3D algorithm is presented for the holographic 3D display. The 2D images are firstly classified into 3 categories by the features. The depth maps for different categories are obtained by different calculation models accordingly. The computer-generated holograms (CGHs) are calculated by the layer-based angular-spectrum approach. These CGHs can be reconstructed with obvious 3D depth cues in simulations and experiments.

Abstract:A computer-generated holographic(CGH)algorithm based on layer structure using angular spectrum propagation theory was proposed in order to improve the calculation speed and the reconstruction quality.The 3D scene was stratified,and the sub holograms of each layer were obtained by angular spectrum diffraction method.The hologram of the whole 3D scene was generated by the superposition of these sub holograms.Because there was no paraxial approximation in angular spectrum diffraction method,the algorithm could be applied to different kinds of 3D models.Besides,the computational complexity of the algorithm depended on the number of layers rather than the complexity of 3D scenes,so the computation speed could be increased by 2-3 orders of magnitude.The algorithm provides an effective solution for dynamic 3D display.

Abstract:A time-division multiplexing method for computer-generated holograms(CGHs) is proposed to solve the problem of the limited space-bandwidth product. A three-dimensional(3-D) scene is divided into multiple layers at different depths. The CGH corresponding to each layer is calculated by an angular-spectrum algorithm that is effective at a wide range of propagation distances. All of the CGHs are combined into several group-CGHs.These group-CGHs are sequentially uploaded onto one spatial light modulator at a high frame rate. The spacebandwidth product can be benefited by the time-division processing of the CGHs. The proposed method provides a new approach to achieve high quality 3-D display with a fast and accurate CGH computation.

Abstract:We present two simple yet effective methods to realize holographic three-dimensional (3D) display by partitioned Fresnel diffraction (PFreD) and partitioned Fraunhofer diffraction (PFraD). After a 3D object is divided into a set of layers in axial direction, these layers are calculated into corresponding sub-holograms. These two methods are used to develop a tiling approach to hologram construction and reconstruction. Both simulations and experiments are carried out to verify the feasibility of the proposed methods. The similarities and differences between PFreD and PFraD are analyzed in details for better understanding. These two methods may provide promising solutions in future holographic 3D realization with their own characteristics and scope of application.

Abstract:In this paper. a method is proposed to implement noises reduced three-dimensional (3D) holographic near-eye display by phase-only computer-generated hologram (CGH). The CGH is calculated from a double-convergence light Gerchberg-Saxton (GS) algorithm, in which the phases of two virtual convergence lights are introduced into GS algorithm simultaneously. The first phase of convergence light is a replacement of random phase as the iterative initial value and the second phase of convergence light will modulate the phase distribution calculated by GS algorithm. Both simulations and experiments are carried out to verify the feasibility of the proposed method. The results indicate that this method can effectively reduce the noises in the reconstruction. Field of view (FOV) of the reconstructed image reaches 40 degrees and experimental light path in the 4-f system is shortened. As for 3D experiments, the results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can present 3D images with 180cm zooming range and continuous depth cues. Abstract:Holographic display has attracted considerable attention for its high-contrast, low power consumption, wide color gamut and potentials for three-dimensional (3D) display. Although computer-generated hologram (CGH) has the potential for reconstructing all the 3D information of an object, complicated 3D modeling and time-consuming computation are big challenges faced by current 3D holographic display. A simple yet effective method to realize holographic 3D display by shifted Fraunhofer diffraction has been presented in this paper. After a 3D object is divided into a set of layers in axial direction, these layers are calculated into corresponding sub-holograms by Fraunhofer diffraction. The hologram uploaded on SLM consists of sub-holograms in a tiling approach. Both simulations and experiments are carried out to verify the feasibility of shifted Fraunhofer diffraction. Detailed analysis of computational cost has also been carried out, and the comparison between shifted Fresnel diffraction and shifted Fraunhofer diffraction in the proposed method has been analyzed. The Analysis results shows that the process of 3D modeling is simple, that is the computational complexity is accordingly reduced compared with shifted Fraunhofer diffraction. The experimental results demonstrate that our method can reconstruct multi-plane 3D object with continuous depth map. It is expected that the proposed method may provide a better solution in future holographic 3D display research.
Speckle Reduction by Macro-Pixel Separation Based on Double-Phase Holographic Display

Abstract:To obtain surreal and richer visual experience, augmented reality (AR) technology has been widely used in various areas. As a popular solution of AR, display using computer generated hologram (CGH) is often accompanied by blurring which is caused by uncontrolled interference. In this paper, a modified algorithm based on double-phase hologram (DPH) algorithm is proposed to reduce speckle noise in holographic reconstruction. The macro-pixels in the original hologram are separated into multiple sub-holograms, and these sub-holograms are displayed alternately in high frequency, which reduces the speckle noise generated from the interference between adjacent macro-pixels. Meanwhile, the method is less time-consuming than the traditional Gerchberg-Saxton algorithm because no iteration is needed. The simulation and the optical experiment based on liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) have been conducted, and the results confirm the feasibility of the proposed method to improve the image quality.

Abstract:Fast calculation and correct depth cue are crucial issues in the calculation of computer-generated hologram (CGH) for high quality three-dimensional (3-D) display. An angular-spectrum based algorithm for layer-oriented CGH is proposed. Angular spectra from each layer are synthesized as a layer-corresponded sub-hologram based on the fast Fourier transform without paraxial approximation. The proposed method can avoid the huge computational cost of the point-oriented method and yield accurate predictions of the whole diffracted field compared with other layer-oriented methods. CGHs of versatile formats of 3-D digital scenes, including computed tomography and 3-D digital models, are demonstrated with precise depth performance and advanced image quality.

The hologram uploaded on SLM consists of sub-holograms side-by-side. Both simulations and experiments are carried out to verify the feasibility of the proposed method. The difference between Fresnel diffraction and Fraunhofer diffraction in the proposed method is analyzed. Aiming at the problems exposed in the experiments, reconstructed results are discussed and further improved by optimizing arrangement of sub-holograms. The process of 3D modeling is simple and the computational complexity is accordingly reduced. This method may provide a promising solution in future holographic 3D realization.

Abstract:An iterative angular-spectrum method for phase-only holograms is presented. Convolution errors are considered and eliminated during the iteration. Full-color holographic reconstructions with an average promotion of 3.53 dB in peak signal-to-noise ratio are realized.

Abstract:Depth cues and full-parallax are crucial issues in the calculation of computer-generated holograms (CGHs) for perfect holographic three-dimensional (3-D) display. In order to accelerate the speed of generating CGHs and improve the display quality, three layer-oriented methods are investigated in this paper. The first method is based on angular-spectrum, which can provide accurate depth cues. The second method is based on inverse Fresnel diffraction layered holographic stereogram to provide accurate depth information as well as correct occlusion effect. The third method is proposed to generate zoomable 3-D CGHs using layer-based shifted Fresnel diffraction. Numerical simulations and optical experiments have demonstrated that the proposed methods can reconstruct quality 3-D images.

Abstract:We propose a holographic 3D display system which can produce images with adjustable viewing parameters and eliminated zero-order interruption. The 3D scene is generated from a 3D CAD tool, and point source algorithm is used to generate the holograms. A two-step model is introduced in the computing to generate precise Fourier holograms. A phase-only spatial light modulator (SLM) is used in the optical reconstruction, which can replay clear images for 3D diffusive objects. During optical reconstructing, the viewing angle and image size of the system can be adjusted by changing the parameters of the replay lens. A filter is introduced in the replay system to eliminate the zero-order interruption and increase the 3D image quality. Optical experiments are performed, and the results show that our proposed holographic display system can produce noiseless 3D image reconstructions.

Abstract:The reconstruction quality of computer-generated holographic display is subject to distortions, which are caused by manufacture defects and misalignments of optical elements. Distortion correction based on precision optics is costly and time-consuming. In this paper, a numerical distortion-correction method based on the angular spectrum algorithm is proposed. A wavefront acquisition system using a camera and the four-step phase-shifting algorithm is employed for calculating the distorted distributions. A wavefront correction system using the spatial light modulator is developed for eliminating distorted distributions. Effective distance, calculation time and iterations, and limitations of the method are discussed. The proposed method is robust in reducing distortions in computer-generated holographic display.

Abstract:We propose an efficient algorithm for calculating photorealistic three-dimensional (3D) computer-generated hologram with Fourier domain segmentation. The segmentation of the spatial frequency processes the depth information from multiple parallel projections, recombining the wave fields of different viewing directions in the Fourier domain. Segmented angular spectrum with layer based processing is introduced to calculate the partitioned elements, which effectively extends the limited region of conventional angular spectrum. The algorithm can provide accurate depth cues and is compatible with computer graphics rendering techniques to provide quality view-dependent properties. Experiments demonstrate the proposed method can reconstruct photorealistic 3D images with accurate depth information.

Abstract:The angular spectrum method (ASM) is widely used in the design of computer-generated holograms (CGH) due to its strict adherence to the Helmholtz equations and the potential for accelerated computation using fast Fourier transform (FFT). However, when dealing with long distance propagation conditions, the reduction of effective spectral components and spectral aliasing will introduce significant computation errors, leading to a substantial degradation in holographic imaging quality. To achieve high-quality holographic imaging design in long distance, we introduce a novel angular spectrum computation method, the calculation process is divided into two steps: (1) First propagate a longer distance from the CGH plane to an intermediate plane. (2) Then continue to propagate to the observation plane after incorporating a spread spectrum phase factor to amplify the effective non-aliased bandwidth in the intermediate plane and eliminating the aliasing artifacts. Furthermore, the non-uniform fast Fourier transform (NUFFT) algorithm is adopted which allows for the flexible adjustments of the sampling interval and quantity in the spatial frequency domain, all while maintaining compliance with the Nyquist sampling theorem even in the context of bandwidth amplification. Both simulations and optical experiments are conducted to validate the feasibility and effectiveness of our proposed method.

Abstract:A new holography display technology based on a phase-only spatial light modulator (SLM) is proposed. The normal use of laser diode (LD) light source led to the inevitable speckle noise introduced by the coherence of the laser beam. Algorithms and special diffractive optical elements have been proposed to reduce the speckle noise. In this paper, a selected light-emitted diode (LED) light source was used in the holographic display system to replace the LD light source. The temporal coherence and spatial coherence of the LED were studied. Though the temporal coherence of LED is short, the spatial coherence of the light field can be improved by optimizing the optical paths such as decreasing the emitting area of the light source and so on. A high-power LED with a narrow band-width was selected. An algorithm to generate computer-generated hologram for the SLM was proposed. The phase-only holograms for the display were computed using the coherent light algorithm. Then the phase holograms were uploaded to the SLM. LED was used as the light source to illuminate the SLM uniformly, and the reconstructions can be observed by naked eye. It is demonstrated that LED is an acceptable light source for holographic display. The reconstruction results showed that the speckle noise and multiple reflections were eliminated when LED was used as the light source.

Abstract:We propose an efficient algorithm using layered holographic stereogram for three-dimensional (3D) computer-generated holograms. The hologram is spatially partitioned into multiple holographic elements (hogels) to provide the occlusion effect and motion parallax by use of multiple viewpoint rendering. Each hogel is calculated with inverse Fresnel diffraction by slicing the viewing frustum according to the depth image. The sliced layers can provide accurate depth cues for reconstruction since the geometric information of the 3D scene is faithfully matched. The algorithm is compatible with computer graphics rendering techniques and robust for holograms with different parameters. When the hogel size equals 1 mm, the signal-to-noise ratio of the diffraction calculation is above 39 dB with a propagation distance longer than 10 mm. Numerical simulations and optical experiments have demonstrated that the proposed method can reconstruct quality 3D images with reduced computational load. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America
