Abstract:Laser forming has become a viable process for the shaping of metallic and non-metallic sheet components, as a means of rapid prototyping and of adjusting and aligning. In order to advance the laser forming process further for practical application in industry, the research of laser forming was performed on common stainless steel 1Cr18Ni9Ti sheet with a Nd:YAG laser source in this paper. In order to obtain convergent and highly accurate results in a reasonable time, a rezoning technique for laser heat flow density is used to adapt the mesh in the FEM simulations of low-velocity laser forming process, single pulse jump light source is applied in place of continuous scan of laser beam. It includes the empirical investigations to determine processing parameters using the temperature gradient mechanism to form different angles with simple straight line laser scanning. The simulation results of temperature field and deformation field of laser forming of metal sheets accord with the experimental results, which showed that the bending angle increases approximately linearly as the scanning times increase. And the bending angle firstly increases with the laser power increasing and begins to decrease at a certain processing parameters, as there is a certain power parameter resulting in a maximum bending angle for a certain material and parameters. The bending angle increases as the laser beam diameter increase and begins to decrease at a certain processing parameters, as a maximum bending angle is acquired when the beam diameter is the same as the thickness of the metal sheet. Bigger sheet thickness leads to smaller bending angles, and thickness is the most important influencing factor of bending angles. The bending angle increases with the sheet width, but there is a width limit bigger than which the sheet width has little influence on bending angles.
