Abstract:Edges and surfaces play indispensable roles in affecting the chemical-physical properties of materials, particularly in two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) with reduced dimensionality. Herein, we report a novel edge/surface structure in multilayer 1T-TiSe2, i.e., the orthogonal (1 × 1) reconstruction, induced by the self-intercalation of Ti atoms into interlayer octahedral sites of the host TiSe2 at elevated temperature. Formation dynamics of the reconstructed edge/surface are captured at the atomic level by in situ scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and further validated by density functional theory (DFT), which enables the proposal of the nucleation mechanism and two growth routes (zigzag and armchair). Via STEM-electron energy loss spectroscopy (STEM-EELS), a chemical shift of 0.6 eV in Ti L3,2 is observed in the reconstructed edge/surface, which is attributed to the change of the coordination number and lattice distortion. The present work provides insights to tailor the atomic/electronic structures and properties of 2D TMDC materials.

Abstract:Intercalation is an effective method to modify physical properties and induce novel electronic states of transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) materials. However, it is difficult to reveal the microscopic electronic state evolution in the intercalated TMDs. Here we successfully synthesize the copper-intercalated 1T-TaS 2 and characterize the structural and electronic modification combining resistivity measurements, atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (ADF-STEM), and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The intercalated Cu atom is determined to be directly below the Ta atom and suppresses the commensurate charge density wave (CCDW) phase. Two specific electronic modulations are discovered in the near-commensurate (NC) CDW phase: the electron doping state near the defective star of Davids (SDs) in metallic domains and the spatial evolution of the Mott gap in insulating domains. Both modulations reveal that intercalated Cu atoms act as a medium to enhance the interaction between intralayer SDs, in addition to the general charge transfer effect. It also solidifies the Mott foundation of the insulating gap in pristine samples. The intriguing electronic evolution in Cu-intercalated 1T-TaS 2 will motivate further exploration of novel electronic states in the intercalated TMD materials.

Abstract:Equilibrium geometries, stabilities, and electronic properties of TinAl (n = 1-13) clusters have been studied by using density-functional theory with local spin density approximation and generalized gradient approximation. The ground-state structures of TinAl clusters have been obtained. The resulting geometries show that the aluminum atom remains on the surface of clusters for n < 9, but is slowly getting trapped beyond n = 9, meanwhile, the Al atom exhibits a valent transition from monovalent to trivalent. The geometric effects and electronic effects clearly demonstrate the Ti4Al cluster to be endowed with special stability. The studies on the bonds indicate the change from ionic to metalliclike.

Abstract:The layered structure dichalcogenide Ti${\mathrm{S}}_{2}$ was studied in thin-film and bulk models, with the use of the self-consistent linearized augmented-plane-wave (LAPW) scheme. Band-structure calculations were performed on the single sandwich (S-Ti-S), the double sandwich ${(\mathrm{S}\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{T}\mathrm{i}\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{S})}_{2}$, and the bulk to reveal the strength and effect of interlayer interactions on the electronic structure. Comparisons are made with existing bulk band models. The fully intercalated LiTi${\mathrm{S}}_{2}$ compound was studied by the same LAPW methods. Changes in the electronic density of states and charge density induced by the alkali intercalate are described.

Abstract:MXenes represent a large family of functionalized two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal carbides and carbonitrides. However, most of the understanding on their unique structures and applications stops at the theoretical suggestion and lack of experimental support. Herein, the surface structure and intercalation chemistry of Ti3C2X are clarified at the atomic scale by aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The STEM studies show that the functional groups (e.g., OH(-), F(-), O(-)) and the intercalated sodium (Na) ions prefer to stay on the top sites of the centro-Ti atoms and the C atoms of the Ti3C2 monolayer, respectively. Double Na-atomic layers are found within the Ti3C2X interlayer upon extensive Na intercalation via two-phase transition and solid-solution reactions. In addition, aluminum (Al)-ion intercalation leads to horizontal sliding of the Ti3C2X monolayer. On the basis of these observations, the previous monolayer surface model of Ti3C2X is modified. DFT calculations using the new modeling help to understand more about their physical and chemical properties. These findings enrich the understanding of the MXenes and shed light on future material design and applications. Moreover, the Ti3C2X exhibits prominent rate performance and long-term cycling stability as an anode material for Na-ion batteries.

Abstract:MXenes, the two-dimensional layered materials, are widely used in electrochemical storage devices and exhibit excellent electrochemical performances. Aluminum-ion batteries are favored by researchers around the world due to our urgent need for emerging clean energy; the study of cathode materials is most important in aluminum-ion battery research. Herein, we have prepared a two-dimensional layered composite of D-Ti3C2Tx@S@TiO2 by a simple method, which shows excellent electrochemical performance in aluminum-ion batteries. The discharge specific capacity is 151.3 mA h g(-1) after 120 cycles, which is about 80.0 mA h g(-1) higher than that of Ti3C2Tx in aluminum-ion batteries, and the capacity retention rate is 72.3%. The Coulomb efficiency is about 85% during steady cycling. The reasons for its excellent electrochemical performances are explored herein, and it is proved by DFT calculations that Ti3C2S is more stable than Ti3C2OH in aluminum-ion batteries. The elemental sulfur reacted with the exposed Ti-ions to form some Ti-S bonds, which play a supporting role in maintaining the original structure of the material and preventing the superposition of layers between the materials. Some TiO2 nanoparticles were grown in situ on the surface of the material by further oxidation treatment, which improved the stability of the material. In addition, we studied the charge/discharge mechanism of the aluminum-ion battery using Ti3C2Tx as the cathode material based on the changes in the contents of Al and Cl, and the change in the valence of Ti-ions. The results show that [AlCl4](-) was intercalated/de-intercalated in the layers of the cathode material during the charge/discharge processes.

Abstract:The investigation of phase structures and defects in material at the atomic scale is now deep going into their physical essence, such as structural stability of the phases, atomistic relax at the interfaces, and so on. In this paper, we choose TiAl-based alloys as an example, because they arc primary candidates for high-temperature structural materials for their low density, high strength and good anti-oxidation property. Based on HREM observation, nano-beam EELS and EDS analysis and ab initio pseudopotential calculation for the cohesive energy of compound, the Ti2A1 phase has been identified. Using HREM observation and molecular dynamics calculation, the atomic structures of symmetrical and asymmetrical tilting grain boundaries have been characterized.

Abstract:Combining advanced transmission electron microscopy with high-precision first-principles calculation, atomic-scale structures of the LaAlO3/TiO2 interface are investigated and bridged to their electronic property at the atomic level. Experimentally, the deposited TiO2 thin film is demonstrated to have an anatase phase and bond directly to the LaAlO3 substrate in an epitaxial, coherent, and atomically abrupt fashion. The atomic-resolution microscopic images reveal that the interface can be terminated with either AlO2 or LaO layer, which is predicted in theory to exhibit a semiconducting or metallic nature at interface, respectively. By applying several analytic methods, we characterize carefully the electronic structure and determine interfacial bonding to be of a mixed covalent-ionic character. The combined experimental and theoretical studies performed shed light on the complex atomic and electronic structures of the buried interface, which are fundamental for understanding the promising properties of functional films for future electronics.

Abstract:The increase in the mechanical performance of Al-Cu alloys through TiC particle reinforcement represents a significant improvement in the field of aluminum alloy strengthening. However, the precipitation behavior at the aluminum matrix and TiC interface requires further exploration. In this study, the induced precipitation mechanisms at the TiC interface and the impact of interface precipitates on bonding were investigated through scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and first-principles calculations. The results indicate that θ'-Al 2 Cu exhibits heterogeneous nucleation on the TiC substrate, and the (100) Al/(110) θ'-Al 2 Cu /(100) TiC interface structure possesses the lowest formation energy. Consequently, the precipitation of θ'-Al 2 Cu at the Al/TiC interface demonstrates thermodynamic preference and energy stability. Tensile simulations reveal that the presence of interface precipitates effectively enhances the strength of the interface structure. Electronic structure analysis indicates a "barrel effect" in the stretched interface model, with fracture occurring in the weakest-bonded Al lattice near the phase interface. Additionally, θ'-Al 2 Cu, acting as an interface adhesive, enhances the chemical bond strength between Al and TiC interface atoms. This work provides novel insights into particle-induced interface precipitation behavior and interface fracture mechanisms.

Abstract:The thermally-induced structural transformation of layered hydrogen trititanate (H2Ti3O7) to TiO2(B) has been systematically studied by means of in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) over a wide temperature range from 170 to 450°C. Our data indicate a structural transition realized via continuous loss of interlayer water, which results in a series of non-stoichiometric hydrogen titanate compounds (3TiO2·δH2O). Electrochemical analysis of hydrogen titanates for lithium-ion intercalation shows that reversible specific capacity increases as calcination temperature increases, whereas cycling stability decreases during the continuous dehydration process.
Elucidating Interfacial Dynamics of Ti-Al Systems Using Molecular Dynamics Simulation and Markov State Modeling

Abstract:Due to their remarkable mechanical and chemical properties, Ti-Al based materials are attracting considerable interest in numerous fields of engineering, such as automotive, aerospace, and defense. With their low density, high strength, and resistance to corrosion and oxidation, these intermetallic alloys and compound metal-metallic composites have found diverse applications. The present study delves into the interfacial dynamics of these Ti-Al systems, particularly focusing on the behavior of Ti and Al atoms in the presence of TiAl$_3$ grain boundaries under experimental heat treatment conditions. Using a combination of Molecular Dynamics and Markov State Model analyses, we scrutinize the kinetic processes involved in the formation of TiAl$_3$. The Molecular Dynamics simulation indicates that at the early stage of heat treatment, the predominating process is the diffusion of Al atoms towards the Ti surface through the TiAl$_3$ grain boundaries. The Markov State Modeling identifies three distinct dynamic states of Al atoms within the Ti/Al mixture that forms during the process, each exhibiting a unique spatial distribution. Using transition timescales as a qualitative measure of the rapidness of the dynamics, it is observed that the Al dynamics is significantly less rapid near the Ti surface compared to the Al surface. Put together, the results offer a comprehensive understanding of the interfacial dynamics and reveals a three-stage diffusion mechanism. The process initiates with the premelting of Al, proceeds with the prevalent diffusion of Al atoms towards the Ti surface, and eventually ceases as the Ti concentration within the mixture progressively increases. The insights gained from this study could contribute significantly to the control and optimization of manufacturing processes for these high-performing Ti-Al based materials.

Abstract:To reveal the complexities of microstructures at the Al/Ti interface, Al/Ti/Al sandwich structures are produced through thermal pressing and annealing treatment. The multi-scale interface structures, elemental diffusion, grain characteristics, and micromechanics are explored by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and nano-indentation. The results indicate only TiAl 3 is generated at the interface, and the interlayer thickness and TiAl 3 grain size increase with rising temperature. On the microscale, a compact interlayer is visible at 500 and 550 °C, whereas massive Al-enriched bulks are dispersed in the interlayer as the temperature increases to 650 °C. Abnormal micro-defects at 600 and 650 °C are partially formed with the thickening of the interlayer and the segregation of Mg and Si. Unexpectedly, interfacial microvoids, amorphous layers, and oxides are detected, which hinder the growth of the interlayer. On the nanoscale, misfit dislocations and lattice distortions are noticed at the interface. More interestingly, the Ti–Al solid solution structures with severe lattice misfits are generated on the three-dimensional (3D) Ti/TiAl 3 interface, which is considered to be a novel strategy for enhancing the strength-plasticity synergy of composite structures.

Abstract:The eutectoid reaction often produces lamellar structure of two alternating phases, which exhibits promising mechanical properties because of high density interfaces. However, the atomic-level understanding of these interfacial structures remains controversial. Here we report the atomic structure of γ/α2 interface in a fully lamellar TiAl alloy investigated by the aberration corrected transmission electron microscopy and density functional theory (DFT) simulations. The results reveal that the orientation relationship between α2/γ interface in TiAl alloy always follows (0001)α2||{111}γ and 〈11–20〉α2||〈1–10〉γ with a semi-coherent lattice match due to the ultralow interfacial energy predicated by DFT calculation.

Electronic and structural properties of the layered ternary carbide Ti3AlC2

Abstract:The electronic and structural properties of the layered ternary compound Ti3AlC2 have been determined using the ab initio pseudopotential method based on density functional theory. We have obtained the equilibrium lattice parameters, the equilibrium atomic positions in the unit cell, and interatomic distances. The calculated bulk modulus is 190 GPa and is comparable to that of TiC. The band structure, density of states (DOS) and effective charges are presented and compared with those of TiC. The band structure indicates that Ti3AlC2 is an electronic conductor. The electronic structure discloses that the bonding in Ti3AlC2 is anisotropic and metallic-covalent-ionic in nature. Compare to the structure of TiC, the presence of Al changes the Ti-C-Ti-C covalent bond chain into a Ti-C-Ti-C-Ti-Al bond chain through its reaction with Ti, forming the layered structure. Effective charge calculations suggest the ionic formula of Ti3AlC2 to be (Ti1.18+)(Ti0.59+)(2)(Al0.52-)(C0.92-)(2).
Experimentally informed structure optimization of amorphous TiO2 films grown by atomic layer deposition

Abstract:Amorphous titanium dioxide TiO2 (a-TiO2) has been widely studied, particularly as a protective coating layer on semiconductors to prevent corrosion and promote electron-hole conduction in photoelectrochemical reactions. The stability and longevity of a-TiO2 is strongly affected by the thickness and structural heterogeneity, implying that understanding the structure properties of a-TiO2 is crucial for improving the performance. This study characterized the structural and electronic properties of a-TiO2 thin films (~17nm) grown on Si by Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD). Fluctuation spectra V(k) and angular correlation functions were determined with 4-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy (4D-STEM), which revealed the distinctive medium-range ordering in the a-TiO2 film. A realistic atomic model of a-TiO2 was established guided by the medium-range ordering and the previously reported short-range ordering of a-TiO2 film, as well as the interatomic potential. The structure was optimized by the StructOpt code using a genetic algorithm that simultaneously minimizes energy and maximizes match to experimental short- and medium-range ordering. The StructOpt a-TiO2 model presents an improved agreements with the medium-range ordering and the k-space location of the dominant 2-fold angular correlations compared with a traditional melt-quenched model. The electronic structure of the StructOpt a-TiO2 model was studied by ab initio calculation and compared to the crystalline phases and experimental results. This work uncovered the medium-range ordering in a-TiO2 thin film and provided a realistic a-TiO2 structure model for further investigation of structure-property relationships and materials design. In addition, the improved multi-objective optimization package StructOpt was provided for structure determination of complex materials guided by experiments and simulations.

Modeling the effects of varying Ti concentration on the mechanical properties of Cu-Ti alloys

Abstract:The mechanical properties of Cu-Ti alloys have been characterized extensively through experimental studies. However, a detailed understanding of why the strength of Cu increases after a small fraction of Ti atoms is added to the alloy is still missing. In this work, we address this question using density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations with modified embedded atom method (MEAM) interatomic potentials. First, we performed calculations of uniaxial tension deformations of small bicrystalline Cu cells using DFT static simulations. We then carried out uniaxial tension deformations on much larger bicrystalline and polycrystalline Cu cells using MEAM MD simulations. In bicrystalline Cu, the inclusion of Ti increases the grain boundary separation energy and maximum tensile stress. The DFT calculations demonstrate that the increase in tensile stress can be attributed to an increase in the local charge density arising from Ti. MEAM simulations in larger bicrystalline systems have shown that increasing the Ti concentration decreases the density of stacking faults. This observation is enhanced in polycrystalline Cu, where the addition of Ti atoms, even at concentrations as low as 1.5 at.%, increases the yield strength and elastic modulus of the material compared to pure Cu. Under uniaxial tensile loading, the addition of small amounts of Ti hinders the formation of partial Shockley dislocations in the grain boundaries of Cu, leading to reduced local deformation. These results shed light on the role of Ti in determining the mechanical properties of polycrystalline Cu and will enable the engineering of grain boundaries and the inclusion of Ti to improve degradation resistance.

Abstract:In this work, Al/Ti composite structures are obtained by isothermal compression at 550 °C and then annealed at 500–650 °C, respectively. The element diffusion behavior, TiAl3 nucleation mechanism and atomic-scale structure at the Al/Ti interface are systematically investigated by different material characterization methods. It is found that with the increasing annealing temperature, the average grain size of TiAl3 increases from 0.47 to 2.27 μm and the diffusion rates of Al and Ti significantly accelerate, accompanied by the change of interlayer thickness from 0.4 to 74.6 μm. The diffusion of Al and Ti along the grain boundary of TiAl3 is observed directly, but Al is dominant diffusion element. The nucleation density of TiAl3 at the Ti/TiAl3 interface is higher than that at Al/TiAl3 interface. Moreover, the growth of the TiAl3 layer is hindered by the enrichment of Si, V, and Mg. The atomic arrangement at the three-dimensional Ti/TiAl3 interface is disturbed by the aggregation of Si, Al, and V, thus forming the short-range ordered Ti–Al(Si, V) structures with serious lattice mismatch. With an increase in the annealing temperature, the incoherent Al/TiAl3 interface with obvious misfit dislocations transforms into the semi-coherent one with low lattice mismatch.

Abstract:We have systematically investigated the structural property and electrical structures of the transition metal intercalated titanium disulfide compound Fe$_x$TiS$_2$ ($0\leq x\leq0.33$) from angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy with tunable polarized synchrotron radiation. The effect of intercalation on the energy bands and density of states of the host material around two high-symmetry points ($\Gamma, L$) is studied. Charge transfer from the Fe atoms to the dichalcogenide layers leads to the movement of the Ti 3d-derived electron pocket. Two hybridized states are observed around $\sim500$ meV and Fermi level. Knowledge of hybridization among the Fe $3d$, Ti $3d$, and S $3p$ states is very important to understand the physical of Fe$_x$TiS$_2$ system.
