Abstract:Aims: ARCiS, a novel code for the analysis of exoplanet transmission and emission spectra is presented. The aim of the modelling framework is to provide a tool able to link observations to physical models of exoplanet atmospheres. Methods: The modelling philosophy chosen in this paper is to use physical and chemical models to constrain certain parameters while keeping free the parts where our physical understanding is still more limited. This approach, in between full physical modelling and full parameterisation, allows us to use the processes we understand well and parameterise those less understood. A Bayesian retrieval framework is implemented and applied to the transit spectra of a set of 10 hot Jupiters. The code contains chemistry and cloud formation and has the option for self consistent temperature structure computations. Results: The code presented is fast and flexible enough to be used for retrieval and for target list simulations for e.g. JWST or the ESA Ariel missions. We present results for the retrieval of elemental abundance ratios using the physical retrieval framework and compare this to results obtained using a parameterised retrieval setup. Conclusions: We conclude that for most of the targets considered the current dataset is not constraining enough to reliably pin down the elemental abundance ratios. We find no significant correlations between different physical parameters. We confirm that planets in our sample with a strong slope in the optical transmission spectrum are the planets where we find cloud formation to be most active. Finally, we conclude that with ARCiS we have a computationally efficient tool to analyse exoplanet observations in the context of physical and chemical models.

Abstract:Understanding of clouds is instrumental in interpreting current and future spectroscopic observations of exoplanets. Modelling clouds consistently is complex, since it involves many facets of chemistry, nucleation theory, condensation physics, coagulation, and particle transport. We develop a simple physical model for cloud formation and transport, efficient and versatile enough that it can be used in modular fashion for parameter optimization searches of exoplanet atmosphere spectra. The transport equations are formulated in 1D, accounting for sedimentation and diffusion. The grain size is obtained through a moment method. For simplicity, only one cloud species is considered and the nucleation rate is parametrized. From the resulting physical profiles we simulate transmission spectra covering the visual to mid-IR wavelength range. We apply our models towards KCl clouds in the atmosphere of GJ1214 b and towards MgSiO3 clouds of a canonical hot-Jupiter. We find that larger cloud diffusivity $K_{zz}$ increases the thickness of the cloud, pushing the $\tau=1$ surface to a lower pressure layer higher in the atmosphere. A larger nucleation rate also increases the cloud thickness while it suppresses the grain size. Coagulation is most important at high nuclei injection rates ($\dot\Sigma_n$) and low $K_{zz}$. We find that the investigated combinations of $K_{zz}$ and $\dot\Sigma_n$ greatly affect the transmission spectra in terms of the slope at near-IR wavelength (a proxy for grain size), the molecular features seen at ~1\micr (which disappear for thick clouds, high in the atmosphere), and the 10\micr silicate feature, which becomes prominent for small grains high in the atmosphere. The result of our hybrid approach -- aimed to provide a good balance between physical consistency and computational efficiency -- is ideal towards interpreting (future) spectroscopic observations of exoplanets.

Abstract:The goal of this white paper is to provide a snapshot of the data availability and data needs primarily for the Ariel space mission, but also for related atmospheric studies of exoplanets and brown dwarfs. It covers the following data-related topics: molecular and atomic line lists, line profiles, computed cross-sections and opacities, collision-induced absorption and other continuum data, optical properties of aerosols and surfaces, atmospheric chemistry, UV photodissociation and photoabsorption cross-sections, and standards in the description and format of such data. These data aspects are discussed by addressing the following questions for each topic, based on the experience of the "data-provider" and "data-user" communities: (1) what are the types and sources of currently available data, (2) what work is currently in progress, and (3) what are the current and anticipated data needs. We present a GitHub platform for Ariel-related data, with the goal to provide a go-to place for both data-users and data-providers, for the users to make requests for their data needs and for the data-providers to link to their available data. Our aim throughout the paper is to provide practical information on existing sources of data whether in databases, theoretical, or literature sources.

Abstract:Abstract. We introduce the Atmospherically Relevant Chemistry and Aerosol box model ARCA box (v.1.2.2). It is a zero-dimensional process model with a focus on atmospheric chemistry and submicron aerosol processes, including cluster formation. A novel feature in the model is its comprehensive graphical user interface, allowing for detailed configuration and documentation of the simulation settings, flexible model input, and output visualization. Additionally, the graphical interface contains tools for module customization and input data acquisition. These properties – customizability, ease of implementation and repeatability – make ARCA an invaluable tool for any atmospheric scientist who needs a view on the complex atmospheric aerosol processes. ARCA is based on previous models (MALTE-BOX, ADiC and ADCHEM), but the code has been fully rewritten and reviewed. The gas-phase chemistry module incorporates the Master Chemical Mechanism (MCMv3.3.1) and Peroxy Radical Autoxidation Mechanism (PRAM) but can use any compatible chemistry scheme. ARCA's aerosol module couples the ACDC (Atmospheric Cluster Dynamics Code) in its particle formation module, and the discrete particle size representation includes the fully stationary and fixed-grid moving average methods. ARCA calculates the gas-particle partitioning of low-volatility organic vapours for any number of compounds included in the chemistry, as well as the Brownian coagulation of the particles. The model has parametrizations for vapour and particle wall losses but accepts user-supplied time- and size-resolved input. ARCA is written in Fortran and Python (user interface and supplementary tools), can be installed on any of the three major operating systems and is licensed under GPLv3.
PyATMOS: A Scalable Grid of Hypothetical Planetary Atmospheres

Abstract:Cloud computing offers an opportunity to run compute-resource intensive climate models at scale by parallelising model runs such that datasets useful to the exoplanet community can be produced efficiently. To better understand the statistical distributions and properties of potentially habitable planetary atmospheres we implemented a parallelised climate modelling tool to scan a range of hypothetical atmospheres.Starting with a modern day Earth atmosphere, we iteratively and incrementally simulated a range of atmospheres to infer the landscape of the multi-parameter space, such as the abundances of biological mediated gases (\ce{O2}, \ce{CO2}, \ce{H2O}, \ce{CH4}, \ce{H2}, and \ce{N2}) that would yield `steady state' planetary atmospheres on Earth-like planets around solar-type stars. Our current datasets comprises of \numatmospheres simulated models of exoplanet atmospheres and is available publicly on the NASA Exoplanet Archive. Our scalable approach of analysing atmospheres could also help interpret future observations of planetary atmospheres by providing estimates of atmospheric gas fluxes and temperatures as a function of altitude. Such data could enable high-throughput first-order assessment of the potential habitability of exoplanetary surfaces and sepcan be a learning dataset for machine learning applications in the atmospheric and exoplanet science domain.

Abstract:Ares is an extension of the TauREx 3 retrieval framework for the Martian atmosphere. Ares is a collection of new atmospheric parameters and forward models, designed for the European Space Agency's (ESA) Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) Nadir and Occultation for MArs Discovery (NOMAD) instrument, Solar Occultation (SO) channel. Ares provides unique insights into the chemical composition of the Martian atmosphere by applying methods utilised in exoplanetary atmospheric retrievals, Waldmann et al. (2015), Al-Refaie et al. (2019). This insight may help unravel the true nature of $CH_{4}$ on Mars. The Ares model is here described. Subsequently, the components of Ares are defined, including; the NOMAD SO channel instrument function model, Martian atmospheric molecular absorption cross-sections, geometry models, and a NOMAD noise model. Ares atmospheric priors and forward models are presented, (i.e., simulated NOMAD observations), and are analysed, compared and validated against the Planetary Spectrum Generator, Villanueva et al. (2018).

Abstract:Atmospheric characterisation of exoplanets from the ground is an actively growing field of research. In this context we have created the ATMOSPHERIX consortium: a research project aimed at characterizing exoplanets atmospheres using ground-based high resolution spectroscopy. This paper presents the publicly-available data analysis pipeline and demonstrates the robustness of the recovered planetary parameters from synthetic data. Simulating planetary transits using synthetic transmission spectra of a hot Jupiter that were injected into real SPIRou observations of the non-transiting system Gl 15 A, we show that our pipeline is successful at recovering the planetary signal and input atmospheric parameters. We also introduce a deep learning algorithm to optimise data reduction which proves to be a reliable, alternative tool to the commonly used principal component analysis. We estimate the level of uncertainties and possible biases when retrieving parameters such as temperature and composition and hence the level of confidence in the case of retrieval from real data. Finally, we apply our pipeline onto two real transits of HD~189733 b observed with SPIRou and obtain similar results than in the literature. In summary, we have developed a publicly available and robust pipeline for the forthcoming studies of the targets to be observed in the framework of the ATMOSPHERIX consortium, which can easily be adapted to other high resolution instruments than SPIRou (e.g. VLT-CRIRES, MAROON-X, ELT-ANDES)

Abstract:We describe the contents and functionality of the NASA Exoplanet Archive, a database and tool set funded by NASA to support astronomers in the exoplanet community. The current content of the database includes interactive tables containing properties of all published exoplanets, Kepler planet candidates, threshold-crossing events, data validation reports and target stellar parameters, light curves from the Kepler and CoRoT missions and from several ground-based surveys, and spectra and radial velocity measurements from the literature. Tools provided to work with these data include a transit ephemeris predictor, both for single planets and for observing locations, light curve viewing and normalization utilities, and a periodogram and phased light curve service. Abstract:In this paper we present a grid of self-consistent 1D model atmospheres of cool stars, sub-stellar objects, and exoplanets in the effective temperature range 300K to 3000K, including cloud formation, chemical non-equilibrium effects, and stellar irradiation. The new grid extends the classical MARCS model atmosphere grid from 2008 towards lower effective temperatures and a broader range of object types. The new model atmosphere computations, MSG, are based on a combination of three well-tested codes, the classical MARCS 1D atmospheres, the StaticWeather cloud formation code, and the GGchem chemical equilibrium code. The combined code has been updated with new and more complete molecular and atomic opacities, cloud formation, and advanced chemical equilibrium calculations, and we also added new numerical methods at low temperatures to allow for a more robust convergence. The coupling between the MARCS radiative transfer and GGchem chemical equilibrium computations has effectively made it possible to reach convergence based on the electron pressure for warmer models and gas pressure for cooler models, enabling self-consistent modelling of stellar, sub-stellar, and exoplanetary objects in a very wide range of effective temperatures. We will make new cloud-free and non-irradiated models for solar metallicity and a selected variety of other chemical compositions immediately available from our home page (www.cels.nbi.ku.dk/english). Illustrative examples of cloudy and irradiated models as well as models based on non-equilibrium chemistry are also presented, and we will describe these in more detail and make them available upon completion at the same place for a larger range of parameter space. For solar metallicity models, the new additional molecular opacities only affect the structure of models cooler than = 2500\,K, and the effect becomes substantial for models below sim 1500\,K. Atomic line opacities are important for models warmer than sim 3000\,K. The line profile of the molecular opacities may have a larger effect on the model structure than previously anticipated, particularly in the uppermost layers at low gas pressure. The qualitative changes in the relative abundances of TiO, H$_2$O, CH$_4$, NH$_3$, and other molecules in our models follow the observationally defined M, L, T (and Y) sequences, but they also reveal more complex and depth-dependent abundance changes and therefore a spectral classification depending on more parameters. The self-consistent coupling to StaticWeather cloud computations allows for detailed comparison between nucleation and observed relative dimming of different spectral bands, with advanced applications for new identification methods of potential exoplanetary biology.

Arctos: Community-driven innovations for managing natural and cultural history collections

Abstract:More than tools for managing physical and digital objects, museum collection management systems (CMS) serve as platforms for structuring, integrating, and making accessible the rich data embodied by natural history collections. Here we describe Arctos, a scalable community solution for managing and publishing global biological, geological, and cultural collections data for research and education. Specific goals are to: (1) Describe the core features and implementation of Arctos for a broad audience with respect to the biodiversity informatics principles that enable high quality research; (2) Highlight the unique aspects of Arctos; (3) Illustrate Arctos as a model for supporting and enhancing the Digital Extended Specimen concept; and (4) Emphasize the role of the Arctos community for improving data discovery and enabling cross-disciplinary, integrative studies within a sustainable governance model. In addition to detailing Arctos as both a community of museum professionals and a collection database platform, we discuss how Arctos achieves its richly annotated data by creating a web of knowledge with deep connections between catalog records and derived or associated data. We also highlight the value of Arctos as an educational resource. Finally, we present the financial model of fiscal sponsorship by a nonprofit organization, implemented in 2022, to ensure the long-term success and sustainability of Arctos.
ExoplANETS-A: A virtual observatory database for host stars and planetary systems. The effect of XUV on planet atmospheres

Abstract:ExoplANETS-A is an EU Horizon-2020 project with the primary objective of establishing new knowledge on exoplanet atmospheres. Intimately related to this topic is the study of the host stars' radiative properties in order to understand the environment in which exoplanets lie. The aim of this work is to exploit archived data from space-based observatories and other public sources to produce uniform sets of stellar data that can establish new insight into the influence of the host star on the planetary atmosphere. We have compiled X-ray and UV luminosities, which affect the formation and the atmospheric properties of the planets, and stellar parameters, which impact the retrieval process of the planetary atmosphere's properties and its errors. Our sample is formed of all transiting-exoplanet systems observed by HST or Spitzer . It includes 205 exoplanets and their 114 host stars. We have built a catalogue with information extracted from public, online archives augmented by quantities derived by the Exoplanets-A work. With this catalogue we have implemented an online database that also includes X-ray and OHP spectra and TESS light curves. In addition, we have developed a tool, exoVOSA, that is able to fit the spectral energy distribution of exoplanets. We give an example of using the database to study the effects of the host star high energy emission on the exoplanet atmosphere. The sample has a planet radius valley that is located at 1.8 $ R_ oplus $, in agreement with previous studies. Multiplanet systems in our sample were used to test the photoevaporation model and we find that out of 14 systems, only one significant case poses a contradiction to it (K2-3). In this case, the inner planet of the system is above the radius gap while the two exterior planets are both below it. This indicates that some factor not included in the photoevaporation model has increased the mass-loss timescale of the inner planet. In summary, the exoplanet and stellar resources compiled and generated by ExoplANETS-A form a sound basis for current JWST observations and for future work in the era of Ariel

Abstract:Context. Interpreting the observations of exoplanet atmospheres to constrain physical and chemical properties is typically done using Bayesian retrieval techniques. Since these methods require many model computations, a compromise must be made between the model's complexity and its run time. Achieving this compromise leads to a simplification of many physical and chemical processes (e.g. parameterised temperature structure). Aims. Here, we implement and test sequential neural posterior estimation (SNPE), a machine learning inference algorithm for atmospheric retrievals for exoplanets. The goal is to speed up retrievals so they can be run with more computationally expensive atmospheric models, such as those computing the temperature structure using radiative transfer. Methods. We generated 100 synthetic observations using ARtful Modeling Code for exoplanet Science (ARCiS), which is an atmospheric modelling code with the flexibility to compute models across varying degrees of complexity and to perform retrievals on them to test the faithfulness of the SNPE posteriors. The faithfulness quantifies whether the posteriors contain the ground truth as often as we expect. We also generated a synthetic observation of a cool brown dwarf using the self-consistent capabilities of ARCiS and ran a retrieval with self-consistent models to showcase the possibilities opened up by SNPE. Results. We find that SNPE provides faithful posteriors and is therefore a reliable tool for exoplanet atmospheric retrievals. We are able to run a self-consistent retrieval of a synthetic brown dwarf spectrum using only 50 000 forward model evaluations. We find that SNPE can speed up retrievals between ∼2× and ≥10× depending on the computational load of the forward model, the dimensionality of the observation, and its signal-to-noise ratio (S/N). We have made the code publicly available for the community on Github.

Towards 3D Retrieval of Exoplanet Atmospheres: Assessing Thermochemical Equilibrium Estimation Methods

Abstract:Characterizing exoplanetary atmospheres via Bayesian retrievals requires assuming some chemistry model, such as thermochemical equilibrium or parameterized abundances. The higher-resolution data offered by upcoming telescopes enables more complex chemistry models within retrieval frameworks. Yet, many chemistry codes that model more complex processes like photochemistry and vertical transport are computationally expensive, and directly incorporating them into a 1D retrieval model can result in prohibitively long execution times. Additionally, phase-curve observations with upcoming telescopes motivate 2D and 3D retrieval models, further exacerbating the lengthy runtime for retrieval frameworks with complex chemistry models. Here, we compare thermochemical equilibrium approximation methods based on their speed and accuracy with respect to a Gibbs energy-minimization code. We find that, while all methods offer orders of magnitude reductions in computational cost, neural network surrogate models perform more accurately than the other approaches considered, achieving a median absolute dex error <0.03 for the phase space considered. While our results are based on a 1D chemistry model, our study suggests that higher dimensional chemistry models could be incorporated into retrieval models via this surrogate modeling approach.

ExoReL$^\Re$: A Bayesian Inverse Retrieval Framework For Exoplanetary Reflected Light Spectra

Abstract:The high-contrast imaging technique is meant to provide insight into those planets orbiting several astronomical units from their host star. Space missions such as WFIRST, HabEx, and LUVOIR will measure reflected light spectra of cold gaseous and rocky planets. To interpret these observations we introduce ExoReL$^\Re$ (Exoplanetary Reflected Light Retrieval), a novel Bayesian retrieval framework to retrieve cloud properties and atmospheric structures from exoplanetary reflected light spectra. As a unique feature, it assumes a vertically non-uniform volume mixing ratio profile of water and ammonia, and use it to construct cloud densities. In this way, clouds and molecular mixture ratios are consistent. We apply ExoReL$^\Re$ on three test cases: two exoplanets ($\upsilon$ And e and 47 Uma b) and Jupiter. We show that we are able to retrieve the concentration of methane in the atmosphere, and estimate the position of clouds when the S/N of the spectrum is higher than 15, in line with previous works. Moreover, we described the ability of our model of giving a chemical identity to clouds, and we discussed whether or not we can observe this difference in the planetary reflection spectrum. Finally, we demonstrate how it could be possible to retrieve molecular concentrations (water and ammonia in this work) below the clouds by linking the non-uniform volume mixing ratio profile to the cloud presence. This will help to constrain the concentration of water and ammonia unseen in direct measurements.

Abstract:A new model of the Martian surface radiative environment has been built : Atmospheric RAdiation Model for Ionizing spectra on martian Surface (ARAMIS). Based on Monte Carlo calculations, it offers high computational flexibility for surface spectra with several GEANT4 physics lists tested for different exposures and mission scenarios. ARAMIS performs Monte Carlo simulations independently of any exposure scenario to determine a surface response function that can then be convolved to any input spectrum, avoiding simulation repetition while maintaining results accuracy, using a parametric atmosphere geometry. In particular, the adopted approach enables secondary spectra to be discriminated by type and origin, in order to observe the impact of different primary flux components on the surface dose calculation. The ARAMIS model has been validated with experimental measurements from the RAD (Radiation Assessment Detector) instrument on board the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) Curiosity rover, and benchmarked against other models in the literature. Built using version 11.1.0 of the GEometry ANd Tracking (GEANT4) toolbox and established models of Galactic Cosmic Ray (GCR) or Solar Particle Event (SEP) spectra, the surface neutron and photon spectra provided by ARAMIS shows a better agreement than other models with high-energy experimental data, reducing model uncertainty for radiation protection calculations.

Abstract:Exoplanet atmospheric retrieval is a computational technique widely used to infer properties of planetary atmospheres from remote spectroscopic observations. Retrieval codes typically employ Bayesian sampling algorithms or machine learning approaches to explore the range of atmospheric properties (e.g., chemical composition, temperature structure, aerosols) compatible with an observed spectrum. However, despite the wide adoption of exoplanet retrieval techniques, there is currently no systematic summary of exoplanet retrieval codes in the literature. Here, we provide a catalogue of the atmospheric retrieval codes published to date, alongside links to their respective code repositories where available. Our catalogue will be continuously updated via a Zenodo archive.
