An evaluation model of sustainability and its application

Abstract:The coordination of environmental and socio-economic development is a basic requirements of sustainable development. The establishment of suitable models of sustainablity evaluation will be helpful for the correct evaluation of the sustainability of specific development and the long-term decision making of the implementation of sustainable development strategy. Based on thorough theoretical basis, the paper establishes two frameworks of environmental and socio-economic development. Two indices, that is, the development period and coordination coefficient between environmental and socio-economic dimensions, are put forward to quantitatively evaluate the sustainability. These frameworks and indices are used in the analysis of the sustainability in China in the past 13 years. The results indicate that the socio-economic development and environmental protection are not coordinative in most years since 1980s. Since 1990s, the environmental quality has not been improved, though generally the socio-economic environmental quality is increasing. The fluctuation of environmental quality will affect the realization of the long-term objective of socio-economic development and environmental protection in China.
