Abstract:Our understanding of IPv6 usage is quite limited. In this paper, we carry out a detailed analysis of Netflow records collected from a China Tier-1 ISP. Many aspects related to traffic attributes and deployment issues are investigated: application types, transitional technologies, interface identifier assignment schemes, etc. Dominating of video streaming and P2P traffic as well as the widely use of random identifiers for privacy are most peculiar characteristics in China's IPv6 networks. To have a better understanding of how IPv6 network is used, we studied users' behavior from several perspectives, such as the traffic volume produced by each user, number of applications he uses and the frequency he uses IPv6 networks. Results show that IPv6 is only effectively used by a small fraction of the users. On the whole, our study suggests that from our vantage point, China's IPv6 network is in the transitional phase from the initial experimental period to practical application. ©2009 IEEE.

Facing the progress and status of the convergence of the three-networks, This document presents a distributed and SIP protocal based VoIP system prototype. Due to combinating of merits of SIP and IP, this model not only provides the interoperation with the existed network, but also provides an extendable plat for the NGN. Abstract:Based on the upgrade of IPv6 technology and demonstration project on the China Next Generation Internet (CNGI-CERNET2) infrastructure, this paper designs a deployment plan for the 4over6 transition system deployed in large scale in pure IPv6 backbone and one hundred universities. This technology has taken into consideration the requirements of SPs with slight modification of the Backbone. The technology has high scalability. It is easy to configure the 4over6-supported equipment and cost little to maintain the equipment. And it doesn't waste the original investment to the network infrastructure. The system supports redundancy backup, which makes it reliable. Besides, it can realize IPv4 connection across IPv6 networks and support classic IPv4 applications like WEB, P2P etc. This deployment plan provides solid support for the transition of backbone.

Abstract:IPv6 comprises multiple advanced network technologies and outdoes the current IPv4 with significant advantages,however it takes long to replace IPv4 with IPv6.The key to a successful IPv6 transition is its compatibility with the large installed base of IPv4 users,applications,hosts,routers and devices. To remain compatible with IPv4 in the deployment of IPv6 will streamline the task of IPv6 transition in the Internet.In this paper,we introduce the background of IPv6 transition, analyze and present the strengths and weaknesses of different transition mechanisms and technologies in detail,classify and compare them as well as their applications.With CNGI context,we discussed the inter-network of IPv4 network based on IPv6 backbone.In the end,future trend of possible research on transition mechanisms and technologies is discussed.

Abstract:Internet has grown rapidly in China since 1995. Thenumber of Internet users in China has been doublednearly every six months since, reaching 46 million up tonow. Abstract:Researchers at the Tsinghua University in Beijing propose a mechanism for letting IPv4 networks communicate with each other across an IPv6 backbone via a Border-Gateway Protocol (BGP)-based control plane for advertising tunnels and IPv4 network prefixes. They've deployed a prototype implementation on the native-IPv6 China Education and Research Network 2 (CERNet2) backbone as the major part of the China Next-Generation Internet (CNGI) project, using current packet encapsulation technology and an extension of BGP, and the IETF is currently considering their 4over6 mechanism as well.

Abstract:Many proposals have been presented for preventing IP spoofing from occurring in network. An outstanding of them is the SAVI (Source Address Validation Improvement) proposal which was advocated by IETF SAVI workgroup for solving this problem from user access switch. SAVI Working Group is developing standardize mechanisms that prevent nodes attached to the same IP link from spoofing each other’s IP addresses, and achieve IP source address validation at a finer granularity. Abstract:OpenStack is a free and open-source software cloud computing platform. It is primarily deployed as an infrastructure as a service (IaaS) solution. However, OpenStack is designed mainly for IPv4, it internally uses [RFC1918] addresses and heavily relies on NAT to map RFC1918 addresses to public IPv4 addresses known as floating IP addresses for the external access. Due to the different nature of IPv6 and IPv4, the IPv6 support for the OpenStack is still in the early stage. In this document, two mechanisms are presented to provide IPv4/IPv6 dual stack external access for the OpenStack, one scenario is internal IPv4 and uses stateful IPv4/IPv6 translator for the external IPv6 access, and another scenario is internal IPv6 and uses stateless IPv4/IPv6 translation for the external IPv4 access. Both mechanisms have been deployed in CERNET and providing services to the global IPv4/IPv6 Internet.

Abstract:IPv6 has long been expected to solve IPv4's problems once for all, but in reality it seems impractical to replace the immense IPv4 infrastructures of the Internet. Mainly to overcome IPv6's incompatibility with IPv4, we propose a new Internet architecture called IPui. It extends and enhances IPv4 by absorbing the essence of IPv6 and by eliminating some limitations of both IPv4 and IPv6. In essence, it employs a two-tier architecture that is compatible with IPv4 and thus supports incremental deployment: in the center is the unchanged IPv4 architecture; around the edge of the IPv4 infrastructures it introduces a new tier. Emerging as well as traditional applications are well supported by the three new features of the IPui architecture: multi-end connection that supports multi-end applications, multi-homing process that facilitates mobile hosts as well as multi-homed hosts, and global layer-4 anycast that simplifies content delivery networks.

Abstract:As IPv6 networks rapidly deployed, native IPv6 backbones (such as CNGI) are emerging. However, vast applications and services still stay in IPv4 network. Thus, interconnection of IPv4 networks over IPv6 backbones is required. Unfortunately, there are no suitable transition mechanisms available to satisfy this requirement. We propose a 4over6 framework for IPv4 network interconnection over IPv6 backbone without explicit tunneling. The 4over6 mechanism is discussed and analyzed. Prototype implementation verifies the theory of the framework. ISP independent deployment scheme then is proposed which reduces the routing overhead and increases the practicability of 4over6 deployment. Being transparent to IPv4 and IPv6 networks, the light weight scalable 4over6 framework is fit for large-scale complexity network interconnection with automatic discovery and control.

Abstract:IPv4 address exhaustion is a reality. The IETF has been investigating several tunnel-based solutions1 to ease the introduction of IPv6, while continuously offering IPv4 services during the transition period. Dual-Stack Lite2 (DS-Lite), which defines a model for providing IPv4 access over an IPv6 network, 3 aims to better align the costs and benefits of deploying IPv6 in operator’s networks. The DS-Lite model proposes a network address and port translation (NAPT) function in the operator’s network to dynamically assign public IPv4 addresses and ports to internal IPv4 packets.Lightweight 4over64 (Lw4o6) is an optimization of DS-Lite designed to reduce NAPT states in the operator’s network. The underlying idea of Lw4o6 is to relocate the NAPT function from the tunnel concentrator (lwAFTR) to the initiators (lwB4s). The lwB4 element is provisioned with a public IP address and a port set.

Abstract:IPv6 offers significant advantages over IPv4. However IPv4 and IPv6 protocols are expected to coexist during a long period. Currently, there are many IPv4/IPv6 transition/coexistence technologies, which can be generally devided into two kinds: translation and tunneling. In some typical transition scenarios, both tunneling and translation are needed. However, either translation or tunneling has limitation and application scope. In addition to the IP versions of source networks and destination networks, the IP version of transport network (the middle part along end-to-end path) also plays an important role during IPv4/IPv6 transition/coexistence. Therefore, we need to decide which transition methods should be used in different typical transition scenarios and how transition and tunneling collaborate for solving transition/coexistence problems. This draft presents an IPv4-IPv6 transition/coexistence framework named PET (short for Prefixing, Encapsulation and Translation), which is a network side solution. PET includes fundamental elements needed in transition scenarios, which provides the flexibility for network operators to decide the proper transition technology. In addition, this draft also addresses how to deploy PETs and analyze the advantages and disadvantages of typical transition technologies that PET may adopt.
