Abstract:Nb2O5 nanostructures were produced by a rational hydrothermal method, which were used as the cathode material in lithium-ion batteries. The Super-P and graphene compounds were used as the conductive agents. Owing to the excellent conductivity of graphene, it is favorable for the contacting area between electrolyte and the electrode material. The results showed that adding graphene can increase the conductivity of the entire electrode system. The specific capacity of Nb2O5 with 4 wt% graphene is 180 mAh g(-1), meanwhile the capacity retention rate is more than 85% after 100 charge and discharge cycles under a current rate of 5 C. Adding an appropriate amount of graphene as the conductive agent can greatly improve the conductivity of the electrode system, reduce the charge transfer resistance during the charge-discharge process to increase the specific capacity, and enable the battery to keep excellent cycle stability. This work demonstrates that the obtained Nb2O5, with Super-P and graphene compound conductive agents can greatly increase performances of lithium ion battery such as capacity, rate performance, and cycle performance and conductivity.
Fabrication of Nb2O5/Carbon Submicrostructures for Advanced Lithium-Ion Battery Anodes

Abstract:Nb2O5 possesses superior fast Li+ storage capability for LIB anodes, benefiting from its fast pseudocapacitive behavior and low volumetric change within the cycling processes. However, the poor electric conductivity for Nb2O5 restricts its reaction kinetics and rate property. Herein, Nb2O5/carbon (C) submicrostructures are fabricated by solvothermal method followed by calcination process. The Nb2O5/C submicrostructures exhibit outstanding rate behavior and cyclic performance (332 (194) mAh g(-1) after 1000 cycles at 1 (5) A g(-1)). The superior electrochemical property is attributed to the distinctive structure for Nb2O5/C submicrostructures, in which Nb2O5 nanoparticles uniformly distributed within Nb2O5/C composite can protect Nb2O5 nanoparticles from agglomeration, and the porous carbon matrix can enhance electron/ion conductivity. This work furnishes a novel strategy for fabricating Nb2O5/C submicrostructures with superior Li+ storage performance, which can be potentially used to design other metal oxide/C submicrostructures for second battery anode.

Abstract:Mesoporous NiCo2O4 nanoneedle arrays on graphene film grown directly on a three-dimensional Ni foam have been fabricated by a facile hydrothermal method, accompanied by annealing under air atmosphere. The BET specific surface area of NiCo2O4@graphene film@Ni foam is as high as 47.65 m(2) g(-1). The porous composites served as a binder-free anode material for lithium-ion batteries display an excellent and stable electrochemical performance with high specific capacities of 1232 mAh g(-1) at the current density of 500 mA g(-1) over 100 cycles and 1493 mAh g(-1) at the current density of 1500 mA g(-1) after 230 cycles with Coulombic efficiency higher than 97%. Moreover, a fairly high rate capacity of 586 mAh g(-1) retained even at a high current density of 8000 mA g(-1). The outstanding electrochemical performance should be attributed to synergetic effect of NiCo2O4 nanoneedle arrays with mesoporous nature and high specific area as well as graphene substrate supporting, which can accommodate the volume variation during the electrochemical reactions and facilitate the ion and electron transmission.

Abstract:Nanostructured NiO/C composite for lithium-ion battery anode was synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method and subsequent calcination. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) showed that the composite was composed of carbon and nanocrystalline NiO. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed a dense and uniform distribution of fine NiO particles, with particle sizes ranging from 7-20 nm, within the carbon matrix. The electrochemical results showed that NiO/C nanocomposite could achieve 792.0 mAh/g reversible capacity and 75.5% initial coulombic efficiency, and 58.1% capacity retention after 40 cycles at a current density of 60 mA/g in the voltage range of 0.01-3.0 V.

Abstract:High power lithium-ion batteries require highly conductive electrodes. For an active electrode material that has limited electron conductivity, it is critical to build a carbon network that is not only highly conductive itself but also highly compatible with the electroactive material for efficient interfacial charge transfer. Herein, we design a multi component carbon network that is optimized for electrical coupling with the electroactive Nb2O5 nanorods for efficient electron injection. The self-support electrode is constructed by using OD polypyrrole-derived (Ppy) carbon nanoparticles as glue to bind the Nb2O5 nanorods with 1D carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and 2D graphene nanosheets (GNSs). The OD carbon nanoparticles also cross-link 1D CNTs with 2D GNSs, which can effectively prevent the GNSs from aggregation and form the 3D CNT/GNS network that provides continuous electronic and ionic pathways. This 3D Nb205@C self-support electrode exhibits a high discharge capacity of 246.3 mA h g(-1) at 0.S C and 100 mA h g(-1) at 20 C and excellent Coulombic efficiency of 99.98% at 20 C. Even increasing the mass loading to 7.1 mg cm-2, the Nb2O5@C electrode can still reach a discharge capacity of 172.4 mA h g(-1) at 0.5 C after 100 cycles. A high power density of 1043 W kg(-1) can be achieved at an energy density of 104.3 W h kg-1 based on the electrode weight, which is among the highest values demonstrated so far for Nb2O5 electrodes. The results pave the way toward practical applications of Nb205 anodes in high-power lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Nb 2 O 5 nanosheets are successfully synthesized through a facile hydrothermal reaction and followed heating treatment in air. The structural characterization reveals that the thickness of these sheets is around 50 nm and the length of sheets is 500 ~ 800 nm. Such a unique two dimensional structure enables the nanosheet electrode with superior performance during the charge-discharge process, such as high specific capacity (~184 mAh·g −1 ) and rate capability. Even at a current density of 1 A·g −1 , the nanosheet electrode still exhibits a specific capacity of ~90 mAh·g −1 . These results suggest the Nb 2 O 5 nanosheet is a promising candidate for high-rate lithium ion storage applications.

Abstract:Uniform Nb2O5 nanospheres/surface-modified graphene (SMG) composites for anode materials in lithium ion batteries were synthesized by hydrothermal method. The microstructure and morphology of composites were investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscope techniques. The experimental results showed that Nb2O5 nanospheres were tightly and uniformly grown on the surface of SMG nanosheets. Nb2O5 nanospheres/SMG composites exhibited an impressive reversible capacity of 404.6mAhg−1 at the current density of 40mAg−1 after 100 cycles, and an excellent rate capacity of 345.5mAhg−1 at the current density of 400mAg−1.

Abstract:Nano-solid spherical Nb 2 O 5 /nitrogen-doped carbon (NC) composite is obtained by the hydrothermal method followed by a calcination procedure. The Nb 2 O 5 /NC composite exhibits good rate performance and sustainable cyclic stability (144 mAh g −1 at 1000 mAh g −1 upon 2000 charge–discharge cycles) as an anode material in Na-ion batteries (SIBs). The excellent performance of the Nb 2 O 5 /NC composite is attributed to its unique nanosphere structure, in which Nb 2 O 5 nanocrystals embedded in porous NC matrix can restrain agglomeration of Nb 2 O 5 nanocrystals and ensure electrolyte accessibility, and the NC matrix can provide effective active sites and increase ions/electrons transfer. This work offers a new method to fabricate nano-solid spherical Nb 2 O 5 /NC composite with good Na + storage property, which can be extended for synthesizing other metal oxide/NC composite as SIB anode.

Abstract:Nb2O5-carbon nanocomposite is synthesized through a facile one-step hydrothermal reaction from sucrose as the carbon source, and studied as an anode material for high-performance lithium ion battery. The structural characterizations reveal that the nanocomposite possesses a core-shell structure with a thin layer of carbon shell homogeneously coated on the Nb2O5 nanocrystals. Such a unique structure enables the composite electrode with a long cycle life by preventing the Nb2O5 from volume change and pulverization during the charge-discharge process. In addition, the carbon shell efficiently improves the rate capability. Even at a current density of 500 mA·g−1, the composite electrode still exhibits a specific capacity of ∼100 mAh·g−1. These results suggest the possibility to utilize the Nb2O5-carbon core-shell composite as a high performance anode material in the practical application of lithium ion battery.

Abstract:Nanocomposite particles of amorphous carbon-Li4Ti5O12 (C-LTO) and carbon nanotube-Li4Ti5O12 (CNT-LTO) were synthesized by solvothermal method and subsequent high-temperature calcination. X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) were applied to characterize the phase structure, particle morphology, and the coating structure. XRD analysis, TEM micrographs, HR-TEM images and SAED analysis revealed that both LTO particles exhibited a well- developed spinel nanocrystal structure with average sizes between 20-70 nm. The C-LTO particles exhibited roughly spherical shape coated by an amorphous carbon layer up to 10 nm in thickness. The CNT-LTO samples showed uniform square nanocrystals with edge length around 20 nm and nanoscale graphitic layers covering the surface, revealing the carbon nanotubes interconnection networks among the particle assemblies. Electrochemical studies of lithium insertion/extraction performance are evaluated by the galvanostatic charge/discharge tests, cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Both LTO particles showed the superior initial discharge capacity of more than 200 mAh/g at 1/10C rate. The irreversible capacity of the C-LTO particles at more cycles was due to large polarization resulted from excessive carbon and possible residual precursors. The CNT-LTO particles show larger reversible capacity and enhanced electrochemical Li+ insertion/extraction kinetics at different cycling rates. The comparative structural and electrochemical analyses demonstrated that both nanoscale graphitic covering layers and the CNT interconnection networks increase the electronic conductivity and improve the kinetics rates of lithium insertion/extraction in the CNT-LTO particles.

Abstract:Uniform nanocable-like Nb2O5/surface-modified carbon nanotubes (SMCNTs) composites for anode materials in lithium ion batteries were synthesized by hydrothermal method. It was indicated that Nb2O5 nanoparticles were tightly and uniformly cultivated on carbon nanotubes when CNTs were pretreated with concentrated H2SO4. As a result, Nb2O5/SMCNTs composite materials showed remarkable electrochemical performance as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. It delivered a high reversible capacity of 441 mA h g(-1) cycled at the current density of 40 mA g(-1) after 100 cycles and an excellent rate capacity of 185 mA h g(-1) at the high current density of 5000 mA g(-1) after 200 cycles. Abstract:In this study, we report that the NiFe2O4/C hollow spheres composed of mesoporous nanospheres have been fabricated through hydrothermal method, calcination treatment and subsequently carbon-coated process. The obtained composite possesses a high surface area (236.44m2g−1) and mesopores (2.3nm), which can efficiently increase the contact area for electrode/electrolyte and buffer the volume change during electrochemical cycling. Combining with the synergistic effect of NiO, Fe2O3 and carbon, the NiFe2O4/C electrode displays superior electrochemical properties in terms of high reversible capacity, good cycle stability, and excellent rate performance. A specific capacity as high as 1266mAhg−1 can be obtained after 100 cycles at the current density of 0.2Ag−1. Even at high current rate of 10Ag−1, the reversible capacity still remains at 633.3mAhg−1 after 250 cycles. Therefore, the mesoporous NiFe2O4/C electrode material may be a promising anode in lithium-ion battery applications.

Abstract:A NiCo2O4/C nanocomposite has been synthesized by a hydrothermal method followed by a calcination. X-ray powder diffraction and transmission electron microscopy measurements demonstrated the composite was composed of crystalline NiCo2O4 and amorphous carbon, and NiCo2O4 and carbon particles amalgamated together with good affinity. The electrochemical results showed as high as 914.5 mAh/g reversible capacity could be achieved at 40 mA/g current density in the potential range of 0.01-3.0 V. The initial coulombic efficiency of the composite was 79.2%, and the capacity retention was 78.3% up to 50 cycles. The superior electrochemical performance indicated that the NiCo2O4/C nanocomposite might be a promising alternative to conventional graphite-based anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. Abstract:Nano-porous silicon composite incorporated with graphite and pyrolyzed carbon was synthesized and investigated as a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries. The nano-porous Si/graphite composite was prepared via two-step ball-milling followed by etching process. Then carbon was incorporated by using different approaches. The nano-porous Si/graphite/C composite exhibits a reversible capacity of about 700mAh/g with no capacity loss up to the 120th cycle at a constant current density of 0.2mA/cm2. The superior electrochemical characteristics are attributed to the nanosized pores in Si particles, which suppress the volume effect, and buffering action as well as excellent electronic and ionic conductivity of carbon materials.
Binder-Free CoMn2O4 Nanoflower Particles/Graphene/Carbon Nanotube Composite Film for a High-Performance Lithium-Ion Battery

Abstract:Manganese-based bimetallic oxides show a high theoretical specific capacity, making them a potential next-generation lithium-ion battery anode material. However, as with metal oxide anode materials, aggregation, volume expansion, and poor conductivity are the main obstacles. In this manuscript, flexible CoMn2O4/graphene/carbon nanotube films were successfully prepared through a facile filtration strategy and a subsequent thermal treatment process. When used as anodes for lithium batteries, these films can be pressed onto nickel foam without other conductive additives and binders, which simplifies the manufacturing process. When used as an anode in the lithium-ion battery, CoMn2O4/GR/CNT film exhibits a high discharge capacity of 881 mAh g−1 after 55 cycles. This value is ~2 times higher than the discharge capacity of CoMn2O4. The three-dimensional GR/CNT carrier effectively dispersed CoMn2O4, preventing its aggregation and alleviating the problem of volume expansion.

Abstract:Nb₂O5@carbon hollow microspheres (Nb₂O5@CHMs) have been synthesized through a facile hydrothermal method. Results revealed that numerous urchin-shaped Nb₂O5 nanospheres were tightly and uniformly anchored on the surface of carbon hollow microspheres. Nb₂O5@CHMs with unique structure exhibited a high initial discharge capacity of 420.32 mA h·g-1 and an impressive reversible capacity of 350.15 mA h·g-1 after 100 cycles at the current density of 40 mA·g-1. The Nb₂O5@CHMs is a potential high-performance anode material for lithium ion batteries.

Abstract:Niobium oxide (Nb 2 O 5 ) is a promising material in photocatalytic, solar cell, electronic like electron field emitters, and especially lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) because of its adjustable morphologies, controllable crystal type, stable structure, and environmental friendliness. However, its low electrical conductivity lowers the rate performance and limits the practical applications in LIBs. Herein, we present a one-step solid-state synthesis of orthogonal Nb 2 O 5 nanocrystals/graphene composites (Nb 2 O 5 /G) as high-performance anode materials in LIBs. Benefiting from the nanoscale crystalline structure Nb 2 O 5 and highly-conductive graphene substrate, the as-prepared Nb 2 O 5 /G exhibits excellent electrochemical performances. Impressively, a reversible structural phase transition between orthogonal Nb 2 O 5 and tetragonal Li 1− x NbO 2 (0 < x < 1) was verified by ex-situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). After coupling with graphite cathode based on PF 6 -intercalation/deintercalation mechanisms, Nb 2 O 5 /G∥graphite dual-ion batteries (DIBs) full cell delivers good electrochemical performance in terms of cyclic performance and rate capability. We believe this work can provide a clear route towards developing advanced transition metal oxide/graphene composite anode and a comprehension of its electrochemical reaction mechanism.

Abstract:A three-dimensional ZnO/graphene/CNT (carbon nanotube) composite was prepared by a one-step sol-gel synthetic technique followed by vacuum-assisted filtration. High resolution transmission electron microscopy revealed the formation of highly-dispersed ZnO nanoparticles, uniformly laid on the crumpled graphene sheets and CNT. The as-prepared ZnO/graphene/CNT composite exhibited excellent cyclability and rate capability when used as anode for lithium ion batteries, affording 620mAhg−1 stable reversible discharge capacity after 100 cycles at 100mAg−1. The unique composite structure provided a large surface area and highly conductive network which maintains good electronic contact between particles, suppresses ZnO aggregation during the charge/discharge processes, and accommodates the large volume changes of ZnO upon cycling.

Abstract:The design and synthesis of anode materials with novel structures are one of crucial issues for developing next generation lithium-ion battery. In this work, carbon nanotube@zinc oxide (CNT@ZnO) composites are synthesized by a liquid-phase method using CNTs as a conductive support. The design of CNT@ZnO composites combines the advantages of both ZnO nanoparticles and CNTs. The optimized CNT@ZnO composite exhibits the superior cycling and rate performance. It could deliver a discharge capacity of 709.2 mAh g(-1) at 100 mA g(-1) after 50 cycles. The electrochemical results indicate that the as-synthesized CNT@ZnO composite is superior in enhancing the electrochemical performance of ZnO-based anode materials.

Abstract:Novel NiCoMnO4 nanosheets have been designed and fabricated via a facile hydrothermal derived process. The microstructure results reveal that the as-prepared material has a typical spinel structure and possesses a nanosheet morphology. Due to the unique chemical composition and nanostructure, the NiCoMnO4 nanosheets exhibit a very high reversible capacity of 1329.3mAhg−1 at 200mAg−1 after 100cycles and show excellent rate performance of 501.6mAhg−1 even at 5000mAg−1 when used as anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs).
