From Afforestation to Ecological Restoration and then to Natural Rehabilitation:The Development of the Principles of Ecological Rehabilitation in the Practice of Plant Landscaping

Abstract:When the relationship between human and nature has changed gradually from opposition to mutualism,the practice of plant landscaping in China has also entered a new stage that focuses on the issue of ecological restoration.This paper first reviewed the history of the practice of plant landscaping in the early years after the foundation of the new China and pointed out that these planted grass and trees should be considered as substitutional vegetation.Then,this paper analyzed several critical problems in the practice of plant landscaping,e.g.the excess of invasive plants,the weakness of biodiversity,the the overlook of principles of the succession of the community.This study then argued that the practices of plant landscaping in China should shift to the way based on the principle of natural rehabilitation.The principle mainly includes sustainable development,seed bank theory,potential vegetation theory,etc.Finally,the critical problems during the practice of plant landscaping in China are concluded together with recommended solutions.
