Abstract:Single-pixel imaging (SPI) has recently attracted considerable attention in magnetic resonance imaging and remote sensing for its data compression capability and broad operational wavelength range. However, the frame rates of single-pixel cameras are largely limited by the response time of digital micromirror devices (DMDs). To circumvent this challenge, a novel SPI technique called time-stretch-based single-pixel imaging (TSSPI) is proposed, which can increase the imaging speed of single-pixel cameras based on DMD by over 3 orders of magnitude. In the TSSPI system, photodetection bandwidth and pulse repetition rate are critical parameters influencing the quality of reconstructed images. In this paper, we quantitatively analyze their effects on reconstruction accuracy through simulation and experiment for the first time. Photodetectors with various bandwidths are separately used to acquire the same number of measurements for image reconstruction and the peak signal-to-noise ratios of the reconstructed images are calculated to evaluate the reconstruction accuracy. We experimentally demonstrate that the ratio between photodetection bandwidth and pulse repetition rate has a strong impact on reconstruction quality. A threshold for this ratio is estimated and high-quality image reconstruction can be achieved only above this threshold. In our experiment, a 400-MHz detection bandwidth is demonstrated to be an optimized parameter set which can balance the trade-off between the system cost and the reconstruction accuracy with respect to a 50-MHz pulse repetition rate. Abstract:The single-pixel imaging (SPI) technique is able to capture two-dimensional (2D) images without conventional array sensors by using a photodiode. As a novel scheme, Fourier single-pixel imaging (FSI) has been proven capable of reconstructing high-quality images. Due to the fact that the Fourier basis patterns (also known as grayscale sinusoidal patterns) cannot be well displayed on the digital micromirror device (DMD), a fast FSI system is proposed to solve this problem by binarizing Fourier pattern through a dithering algorithm. However, the traditional dithering algorithm leads to low quality as the extra noise is inevitably induced in the reconstructed images. In this paper, we report a better dithering algorithm to binarize Fourier pattern, which utilizes the Sierra-Lite kernel function by a serpentine scanning method. Numerical simulation and experiment demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is able to achieve higher quality under different sampling ratios.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a high-speed single-pixel imaging (SPI) system based on all-optical discrete cosine transform (DCT) and demonstrate its capability to enable noninvasive imaging of flowing cells in a microfluidic channel. Through spectral shaping based on photonic time stretch (PTS) and wavelength-to-space conversion, structured illumination patterns are generated at a rate (tens of MHz) which is three orders of magnitude higher than the switching rate of a digital micromirror device (DMD) used in a conventional single-pixel camera. Using this pattern projector, high-speed image compression based on DCT can be achieved in the optical domain. In our proposed system, a high compression ratio (approximately 10: 1) and a fast image reconstruction procedure are both achieved, which implicates broad applications in industrial quality control and biomedical imaging.

Abstract:Traditional single-pixel imaging (SPI) encounters challenges such as high sampling redundancy and poor imaging quality, constraining its widespread application. Despite a range of orthogonal modulation modes have been employed in structured illumination to enhance imaging performance, some encoding issues still persist in information sampling, impeding the further progression of SPI. We propose an SPI method based on orthogonal Hermite–Gaussian (HG) moments, achieving improved imaging reconstruction through differential modulation of HG basis patterns and linear weighting of acquired intensity. Both simulations and experiments confirm superior imaging quality and computation efficiency of proposed Hermite–Gaussian single-pixel imaging (HG-SI), especially at low-measurement levels. Moreover, we incorporate compressed sensing algorithms within the framework of HG-SI, integrating moments-based sampling strategies to optimize imaging capability under sparse measurements. Our research underscores the effectiveness of HG modulation in SPI reconstruction, enabling high-quality outcomes via compressed sampling. This advancement propels the investigation of optical field modulation modes within SPI and holds promise in offering a universal solution for weak-intensity and non-visible light microscopy.

Abstract:Single-pixel imaging (SPI) technology has garnered great interest within the last decade because of its ability to record high-resolution images using a single-pixel detector. It has been applied to diverse fields, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), aerospace remote sensing, terahertz photography, and hyperspectral imaging. Compared with conventional silicon-based cameras, single-pixel cameras (SPCs) can achieve image compression and operate over a much broader spectral range. However, the imaging speed of SPCs is governed by the response time of digital micromirror devices (DMDs) and the amount of compression of acquired images, leading to low (ms-level) temporal resolution. Consequently, it is particularly challenging for SPCs to investigate fast dynamic phenomena, which is required commonly in microscopy. Recently, a unique approach based on photonic time stretch (PTS) to achieve high-speed SPI has been reported. It achieves a frame rate far beyond that can be reached with conventional SPCs. In this paper, we first introduce the principles and applications of the PTS technique. Then the basic architecture of the high-speed SPI system is presented, and an imaging flow cytometer with high speed and high throughput is demonstrated experimentally. Finally, the limitations and potential applications of high-speed SPI are discussed.

Abstract:Single-pixel imaging (SPI) is a novel technique that captures 2D images using a photodiode, instead of conventional 2D array sensors. SPI has high signal-to-noise ratio, wide spectral range, low cost, and robustness to light scattering. Various algorithms have been proposed for SPI reconstruction, including linear correlation methods, the alternating projection (AP) method, and compressive sensing (CS) based methods. However, there has been no comprehensive review discussing respective advantages, which is important for SPI's further applications and development. In this paper, we review and compare these algorithms in a unified reconstruction framework. We also propose two other SPI algorithms, including a conjugate gradient descent (CGD) based method and a Poisson maximum-likelihood-based method. Both simulations and experiments validate the following conclusions: to obtain comparable reconstruction accuracy, the CS-based total variation (TV) regularization method requires the fewest measurements and consumes the least running time for small-scale reconstruction, the CGD and AP methods run fastest in large-scale cases, and the TV and AP methods are the most robust to measurement noise. In a word, there are trade-offs in capture efficiency, computational complexity, and robustness to noise among different SPI algorithms. We have released our source code for non-commercial use. Abstract:Single-pixel imaging (SPI) is an emerging technique which has attracts wide attention in various research fields. However, restricted by the low reconstruction quality and large amount of measurements, the practical application is still in its infancy. Inspired by the fact that natural scenes exhibit unique degenerate structures in the low dimensional subspace, we propose to take advantage of the local prior in convolutional sparse coding to implement high fidelity single-pixel imaging. Specifically, by statistically learning strategy, the target scene can be sparse represented on an overcomplete dictionary. The dictionary is composed of various basis learned from a natural image database. We introduce the above local prior into conventional SPI framework to promote the final reconstruction quality. Experiments both on synthetic data and real captured data demonstrate that our method can achieve better reconstruction from the same measurements, and thus consequently reduce the number of required measurements for same reconstruction quality.

Abstract:Single-pixel imaging (SPI), which is generally based on computational imaging, has the advantages of a wide bandwidth and the ability to image objects beyond the visual field. However, the major challenge in developing SPI is the large number of illumination patterns that are required. Unlike traditional SPI that relies on random measurement patterns, the SPI method proposed in this letter involves a two-step phase shift that reduces greatly the required number of illumination patterns. Theoretical analysis shows that 6724 illumination patterns are required to reconstruct a 128 × 128-pixel image whose peak signal-to-noise ratio exceeds 30, and these can be projected in 0.3362 s with a digital micromirror device working at full speed. Compared to SPI with a four-step phase shift, half the number of illumination patterns are required. Verification experiments show that the reconstructed images can be obtained even at a sampling ratio of 20%. The proposed SPI with a two-step phase shift is an effective means of requiring fewer illumination patterns and has great potential in dynamic detection.

Abstract:Usually, Single-Pixel Imaging (SPI) achieves high spatial resolution by degrading time precision, and improving the spatial and temporal resolutions concurrently is very challenging. To tackle this problem, we introduce Stockwell transform as well as its basis into SPI area. Compared with other ones resulted from Fourier or Hadamard, etc, they can represent scenes with fewer bases, making the number of imaging reduced for getting the same quality image. Based on the Stockwell bases, an adaptive differential modulation technique is designed, which uses the inverse Stockwell transform of low-resolution images to guide the selection of Stockwell basis in the next time. Compared with the state-of-the-art methods, Stockwell bases and the guidance of basis selection make the imaging efficiency and resolution improved. Especially, the guidance trick possibly benefits a large number of SPI methods, making the basis in each imaging optimized. Finally, a great number of experimental results have shown that the proposed method achieves the utmost performance among the compared techniques.

Abstract:In single-pixel imaging (SPI), a large number of illuminations is usually required to capture one single image. Consequently, SPI may only achieve a very low frame rate for a fast-moving object and the reconstructed images are contaminated with blur and noise. In previous works, some attempts are made to perform motion estimation between neighboring frames in a SPI video to enhance the image quality. However, the motion estimation and quality enhancement from one single image frame in dynamic SPI was seldom investigated. In this work, it assumed that some prior knowledge about the type of motion the object undergoes is known. A motion model of the target object is constructed and the motion parameters can be optimized within a search space. Our proposed scheme is different from common motion deblur techniques for photographs since the motion blur mechanism in SPI is significantly different from a conventional camera. Experimental results demonstrate that the reconstructed images with our proposed scheme in dynamic SPI have much better quality.

Abstract:The speed and quality of single-pixel imaging (SPI) are fundamentally limited by image modulation frequency and by the levels of optical noise and compression noise. In an approach to come close to these limits, we introduce a SPI technique, which is inherently differential, and comprises a novel way of measuring the zeroth spatial frequency of images and makes use of varied thresholding of sampling patterns. With the proposed sampling, the entropy of the detection signal is increased in comparison to standard SPI protocols. Image reconstruction is obtained with a single matrix-vector product so the cost of the reconstruction method scales proportionally with the number of measured samples. A differential operator is included in the reconstruction and following the method is based on finding the generalized inversion of the modified measurement matrix with regularization in the Fourier domain. We demonstrate 256 × 256 SPI at up to 17 Hz at visible and near-infrared wavelength ranges using 2 polarization or spectral channels. A low bit-resolution data acquisition device with alternating-current-coupling can be used in the measurement indicating that the proposed method combines improved noise robustness with a differential removal of the direct current component of the signal.

Abstract:Single-pixel cameras based on the concepts of compressed sensing (CS) leverage the inherent structure of images to retrieve them with far fewer measurements and operate efficiently over a significantly broader spectral range than conventional silicon-based cameras. Recently, photonic time-stretch (PTS) technique facilitates the emergence of high-speed single-pixel cameras. A significant breakthrough in imaging speed of single-pixel cameras enables observation of fast dynamic phenomena. However, according to CS theory, image reconstruction is an iterative process that consumes enormous amounts of computational time and cannot be performed in real time. To address this challenge, we propose a novel single-pixel imaging technique that can produce high-quality images through rapid acquisition of their effective spatial Fourier spectrum. We employ phase-shifting sinusoidal structured illumination instead of random illumination for spectrum acquisition and apply inverse Fourier transform to the obtained spectrum for image restoration. We evaluate the performance of our prototype system by recognizing quick response (QR) codes and flow cytometric screening of cells. A frame rate of 625 kHz and a compression ratio of 10 recognition rate of the QR code. An imaging flow cytometer enabling high-content screening with an unprecedented throughput of 100,000 cells/s is also demonstrated. For real-time imaging applications, the proposed single-pixel microscope can significantly reduce the time required for image reconstruction by two orders of magnitude, which can be widely applied in industrial quality control and label-free biomedical imaging.

Abstract:Based on image encoding in a serial-temporal format, optical time-stretch imaging entails a stringent requirement of state-of-the-art fast data acquisition unit in order to preserve high image resolution at an ultrahigh frame rate — hampering the widespread utilities of such technology. Here, we propose a pixel super-resolution (pixel-SR) technique tailored for time-stretch imaging that preserves pixel resolution at a relaxed sampling rate. It harnesses the subpixel shifts between image frames inherently introduced by asynchronous digital sampling of the continuous time-stretch imaging process. Precise pixel registration is thus accomplished without any active opto-mechanical subpixel-shift control or other additional hardware. Here, we present the experimental pixel-SR image reconstruction pipeline that restores high-resolution time-stretch images of microparticles and biological cells (phytoplankton) at a relaxed sampling rate (≈2–5 GSa/s)—more than four times lower than the originally required readout rate (20 GSa/s) — is thus effective for high-throughput label-free, morphology-based cellular classification down to single-cell precision. Upon integration with the high-throughput image processing technology, this pixel-SR time-stretch imaging technique represents a cost-effective and practical solution for large scale cell-based phenotypic screening in biomedical diagnosis and machine vision for quality control in manufacturing.

Abstract:The multisensor system based on single-pixel imaging (SPI) can realize the simultaneous measurement and imaging of various optical information (such as spectrum, polarization, etc.), in which a single-pixel sensor can measure one kind of optical information. Spectral imaging technology can simultaneously obtain rich information such as spatial structure and fine spectral characteristics of the target scene. The architecture and implementation of most spectral imaging systems are complex, which limits or affects their indicators, parameters, and applications to varying degrees. Here, we propose a novel multispectral SPI method based on spatial and spectral dimension decoupling. This method uses spatial dimension compression coding modulation, and spectral dimension modulation through ingenious optical system design. It utilizes a single-pixel detector array combined with traditional spectral filtering technology to directly and parallel collect spatial image compression coding information from various spectral channels. This method reduces the information-carrying capacity of a single photon and reduces the requirements for the detection signal-to-noise ratio. The experiment demonstrated 15 channels of visible and near-infrared spectral SPI and demonstrated real-time multispectral SPI with an imaging speed of 5 Hz, which can be extended to spectral imaging with higher spectral resolution and more spectral channels. This work can facilitate the use of multisensor arrays for more convenient research such as spectral information acquisition.

Abstract:Single-pixel imaging (SPI) uses a single-pixel detector to create an image of an object. SPI relies on a computer to construct an image, thus increasing both the size and cost of SPI and limiting its application. We developed instant single-pixel imaging (ISPI), an on-chip SPI system that implements real-time imaging at a rate of 25 fps. ISPI uses the instant ghost imaging algorithm we proposed which leverages signal differences for image creation. It does not require a computer, which greatly reduces its cost and size. The reconstruct time of ISPI for image creation is almost zero because little processing is required after signal detection. ISPI paves the way for the practical application of SPI.

Abstract:The recently proposed Radon single pixel imaging (RSPI) is based on Radon transform and considered to be a prospective technique in many fields, such as computed tomography, feature detection, classification and so on. And because of the fact that the exact implementation of inverse discrete Radon transformation does not exist, an approximate algorithm, filtered back projection, is employed to reconstruct the result images in RSPI. However, the presence of disturbing streak artifacts emerging from high-contrast structures hinders the high-quality reconstructions, especially at low sampling rates. In order to get rid of this dilemma, a novel single pixel imaging technique, which employs a few projection angle patterns to achieve sparse projection angle sampling and utilizes compressive sensing to reconstruct the result images, is proposed. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the image quality reconstructed by the proposed technique is much higher than that of RSPI at low sampling rates. Additionally, the proposed technique also has advantages in a lot of fields such as tomographic reconstruction at low radiation.

Abstract:Single-pixel imaging (SPI) enables the use of advanced detector technologies to provide a potentially low-cost solution for sensing beyond the visible spectrum and has received increasing attentions recently. However, when it comes to sub-Nyquist sampling, the spectrum truncation and spectrum discretization effects significantly challenge the traditional SPI pipeline due to the lack of sufficient sparsity. In this work, a deep compressive sensing (CS) framework is built to conduct image reconstructions in classical SPIs, where a novel compression network is proposed to enable collaborative sparsity in discretized feature space while remaining excellent coherence with the sensing basis as per CS conditions. To alleviate the underlying limitations in an end-to-end supervised training, for example, the network typically needs to be re-trained as the basis patterns, sampling ratios and so on. change, the network is trained in an unsupervised fashion with no sensing physics involved. Validation experiments are performed both numerically and physically by comparing with traditional and cutting-edge SPI reconstruction methods. Particularly, fluorescence imaging is pioneered to preliminarily examine the in vivo biodistributions. Results show that the proposed method maintains comparable image fidelity to a sCMOS camera even at a sampling ratio down to 4%, while remaining the advantages inherent in SPI. The proposed technique maintains the unsupervised and self-contained properties that highly facilitate the downstream applications in the field of compressive imaging.
