Abstract:Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), which has been widely studied in scientific field, is an important component of computer science education. Generally, the existing HCI courses adopt Problem-Based Learning (PBL) or Case-Based Learning (CBL) as the primary teaching method. An Interest-Based Learning (IBL) is suggested in this paper. Our motivation for proposing this method is to address the issue that students may be lack of interest in continuous and innovative research after completing our HCI courses. In this method, students are asked to propose their own HCI projects related to their common personal interests, such as playing piano or cooking. The merit of our proposed methodology is to utilize students' individual wisdom and experience accumulated in their daily life before. Thus, they will have strong desires to make their work showing their personality in class and getting constant study and unceasing effort after class. In the three-year follow-up surveys, the student feedback shows that their interest is indeed increased by the introduction of IBL teaching method in class. Another noteworthy fact discovered is that some students did take selfinitiative to continue the perfection of their projects, even after the end of our course.
