Abstract:Hepatocellular carcinoma is one of the most common gastrointestinal malignancies. Anti-angiogenesis therapies have recently demonstrated promise in the treatment of malignancies, although early treatment benefits may be accompanied by metastasis over time. Additional and more effective anti-angiogenic treatment modalities are therefore needed. We previously found that Yes-associated protein 1 (YAP1) expression is increased in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), particularly around tumor-associated blood vessels, suggesting a role in angiogenesis. The YAP1 inhibitor verteporfin is presently in anti-angiogenic clinical trials for the treatment of various cancers. Depleted YAP1 from vascular endothelial cells effectively reduced proliferation and tube formation, validating its utility as an anti-angiogenesis target. We also showed that YAP1 depletion or inhibition in vascular endothelial cells leads to increased release of exosomes containing the long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) MALAT1 into the tumor microenvironment. Direct exosomal transfer of MALAT1 to hepatic cells leads to increased hepatic cell invasion and migration via activation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2) signaling. These observations may explain the occurrence of distant tumor metastasis with YAP1-associated anti-angiogenic therapy over time. It provides insight into new pathways and treatment paradigms that may be targeted to increase the long-term success of anti-angiogenic therapies.

Abstract:This article (1) has been retracted at the request of the editors. The two cell lines used throughout the study, QGY-7703 and LO2, have been reported to be misidentified (2, 3). The authors performed STR profiling of their cell cultures following publication of the article. The QGY-7703 and LO2 cell lines could not be authenticated, and the QGY-7703 cell line was confirmed to be contaminated with HeLa cells.A copy of this Retraction notice was sent to the last known email addresses for 11 of the 11 authors (1). Abstract:Following the publication of this paper, it was drawn to the Editor's attention by a concerned reader that certain of the Transwell migration and invasion assay data shown in Fig. 4D on p. 2145 were strikingly similar to data that had already been published in different form in another article written by different authors at a different research institute [Feng L, Ma J, Li H, Liu Y and Hu W: MiR‐184 retarded the proliferation, invasiveness and migration of glioblastoma cells by repressing stanniocalcin‐2. Pathol Oncol Res 24: 853‐860, 2018]. Abstract:Following the publication of the above article, a concerned reader drew to the Editor's attention that certain of the immunohistochemical data shown in Fig. 1C on p. 236, and immunofluorescence data featured in Figs. 2G and 5G on p. 237 and 239 respectively, were strikingly similar to data that had appeared in other articles written by different authors at different research institutes which had already been published. In view of the fact that certain of the data in the above article had already been published at the time of the paper's submission, the Editor of International Journal of Oncology has decided that this paper should be retracted from the publication.
