Abstract:Photometric stereo methods based on Lambertian surface assumption are very efficient and have attracted increasing attention of researchers. Several promising methods developed in this area perform optimization based on such assumption. These methods directly optimize the illumination intensity and assume that the optimization for pixel intensity is equivalent to the optimization for the normal vector. However, such assumption is not reasonable because according to the Lambertian model, the intensity is determined by the vector product of normal vector and illumination vector. In this paper, we firstly show that the optimization of the normal vector, instead of the pixel intensity, can improve the performance. We then derive the relationship between the pixel intensity error and normal error. This derivation is then used to propose a new approach for photometric stereo, for the case when number of images are three. Such problem is rarely addressed in the literature. Our experimental results, both on the synthetic data and the real world data, also illustrate optimization of surface normal outperforms optimization of pixel intensity and validate our theoretical arguments.
