Abstract:The sensitivity encoding (SENSE) reconstruction reconstruction of parallel imaging can suffer from amplified noise at high reduction factors due to the ill-conditioned system matrix. Regularization alleviates this problem by imposing priors on the reconstructed image. These priors typically introduce both intrastructure smoothness and interstructure smoothness. The former mainly reduces noise, while the latter can also decrease intensity changes between different structures and cause structure loss. In this study, coherence regularization was proposed to impose only intrastructure smoothness in order to enhance the preservation of the image structure. Its energy functional was formed by examining the connection between regularization and the diffusion equation of adaptive image filtering. The coherence regularization extracts image structure information directly from the noisy data by adapting diffusion equation-related image-filtering methods. In this study, a nonlocal operator derived from the nonlocal mean filter was used for structure detection. Based on this structure information, only intrastructure intensity changes are penalized while the interstructure intensity changes are preserved. Both phantom simulation and in vivo experiments demonstrate that the coherence regularization would be able to effectively suppress noise in SENSE reconstruction at high reduction factors while suffering from much less image degradation, compared to Tikhonov and total variation methods. Abstract:Quantum coherence, like entanglement, is a fundamental resource in quantum information. In recent years, remarkable progress has been made in formulating resource theory of coherence from a broader perspective. The notions of block-coherence and POVM-based coherence have been established. Certain challenges, however, remain to be addressed. It is difficult to define incoherent operations directly, without requiring incoherent states, which proves a major obstacle in establishing the resource theory of dynamical coherence. In this paper, we overcome this limitation by introducing an alternate definition of incoherent operations, induced via coherence measures, and quantify dynamical coherence based on this definition. Finally, we apply our proposed definition to quantify POVM-based dynamical coherence.

Abstract:In this paper we define a new coherence index, named the global 2-coherence, of a given dictionary and study its relationship with the conventional mutual coherence and the restricted isometry constant. By exploring this relationship, we obtain more general results on sparse signal reconstruction using greedy algorithms in the compressive sensing (CS) framework. In particular, we obtain an improved bound over the best known results on the restricted isometry constant for successful recovery of sparse signals using orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP).

Abstract:We study the relation between the coherence of assistance and the regularized coherence of assistance introduced by Chitambar et al. [E. Chitambar et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 070402 (2016)]. The necessary and sufficient conditions that these two quantities coincide are provided. Detailed examples are analyzed and the optimal pure state decompositions such that the coherence of assistance equals the regularized coherence of assistance are derived. Moreover, we present the protocol for obtaining the maximal relative entropy coherence, assisted by another party under local measurement and one-way communication in one copy setting.

Abstract:In Bora et al. (2017), a mathematical framework was developed for compressed sensing guarantees in the setting where the measurement matrix is Gaussian and the signal structure is the range of a generative neural network (GNN). The problem of compressed sensing with GNNs has since been extensively analyzed when the measurement matrix and/or network weights follow a subgaussian distribution. We move beyond the subgaussian assumption, to measurement matrices that are derived by sampling uniformly at random rows of a unitary matrix (including subsampled Fourier measurements as a special case). Specifically, we prove the first known restricted isometry guarantee for generative compressed sensing with subsampled isometries and provide recovery bounds, addressing an open problem of Scarlett et al. (2022, p. 10). Recovery efficacy is characterized by the coherence, a new parameter, which measures the interplay between the range of the network and the measurement matrix. Our approach relies on subspace counting arguments and ideas central to high-dimensional probability. Furthermore, we propose a regularization strategy for training GNNs to have favourable coherence with the measurement operator. We provide compelling numerical simulations that support this regularized training strategy: our strategy yields low coherence networks that require fewer measurements for signal recovery. This, together with our theoretical results, supports coherence as a natural quantity for characterizing generative compressed sensing with subsampled isometries.

Abstract:Optical coherence is becoming an efficient degree of freedom for light field manipulations and applications. In this work, we show that the image information hidden a distance behind a random scattering medium is encoded in the complex spatial coherence structure of a partially coherent light beam that generates after the random scatterer. We validate in experiment that the image information can be well recovered with the spatial coherence measurement and the aid of the iterative phase retrieval algorithm in the Fresnel domain. We find not only the spatial shape but also the position including the lateral shift and longitudinal distances of the image hidden behind the random scatterer can be reconstructed, which indicates the potential uses in three-dimensional optical imaging through random scattering media.

Low Complexity Regularized Phase Retrieval

Abstract:In this paper, we study the phase retrieval problem in the situation where the vector to be recovered has an a priori structure that can encoded into a regularization term. This regularizer is intended to promote solutions conforming to some notion of simplicity or low complexity. We investigate both noiseless recovery and stability to noise and provide a very general and unified analysis framework that goes far beyond the sparse phase retrieval mostly considered in the literature. In the noiseless case we provide sufficient conditions under which exact recovery, up to global sign change, is possible. For Gaussian measurement maps, we also provide a sample complexity bound for exact recovery. This bound depends on the Gaussian width of the descent cone at the soughtafter vector which is a geometric measure of the complexity of the latter. In the noisy case, we consider both the constrained (Mozorov) and penalized (Tikhonov) formulations. We provide sufficient conditions for stable recovery and prove linear convergence for sufficiently small noise. For Gaussian measurements, we again give a sample complexity bound for linear convergence to hold with high probability. This bound scales linearly in the intrinsic dimension of the sought-after vector but only logarithmically in the ambient dimension.

Abstract:We show a monotonic relationship between performances of various computer vision tasks versus degrees of coherence of illumination. We simulate partially coherent illumination using computational methods, propagate the lightwave to form images, and subsequently employ a deep neural network to perform object recognition and depth sensing tasks. In each controlled experiment, we discover that, increased coherent length leads to improved image entropy, as well as enhanced object recognition and depth sensing performance.

Abstract:The recovery of sparsest overcomplete representation has recently attracted intensive research activities owe to its important potential in the many applied fields such as signal processing, medical imaging, communication, and so on. This problem can be stated in the following, i.e., to seek for the sparse coefficient vector of the given noisy observation over a redundant dictionary such that, where is the corrupted error. Elad et al. made the worst-case result, which shows the condition of stable recovery of sparest overcomplete representation over is where . Although it's of easy operation for any given matrix, this result can't provide us realistic guide in many cases. On the other hand, most of popular analysis on the sparse reconstruction relies heavily on the so-called RIP (Restricted Isometric Property) for matrices developed by Candes et al., which is usually very difficult or impossible to be justified for a given measurement matrix. In this article, we introduced a simple and efficient way of determining the ability of given D used to recover the sparse signal based on the statistical analysis of coherence coefficients, where is the coherence coefficients between any two different columns of given measurement matrix . The key mechanism behind proposed paradigm is the analysis of statistical distribution (the mean and covariance) of . We proved that if the resulting mean of are zero, and their covariance are as small as possible, one can faithfully recover approximately sparse signals from a minimal number of noisy measurements with overwhelming probability. The resulting theory is not only suitable for almost all models - e.g. Gaussian, frequency measurements-discussed in the literature of compressed sampling, but also provides a framework for new measurement strategies as well.

Abstract:The eigenstructure-based coherence attribute is a type of efficient and mature tool for mapping geologic edges such as faults and/or channels in the 3D seismic interpretation. However, the eigenstructure-based coherence algorithm is sensitive to low signal-to-noise ratio seismic data, and the coherence results are affected by the dipping structures. Due to the large energy gap between the low- and high-frequency components, the low-frequency components play the principal role in coherence estimation. In contrast, the spectral variance balances the difference between the low- and high-frequency components at a fixed depth. The coherence estimation based on amplitude spectra avoids the effect of the time delays resulting from the dipping structures. Combining the spectral variance with the amplitude spectra avoids the effect of dipping structures and enhances the antinoise performance of the high-frequency components. First, we apply the short-time Fourier transform to obtain the time-frequency spectra of seismic data. Next, we compute the variance values of amplitude spectra. Then, we apply the fast Fourier transform to obtain the amplitude spectra of spectral variance. Finally, we calculate the eigenstructure coherence by using the amplitude spectra of spectral variance as the input. We apply the method to the theoretical models and practical seismic data. In the Marmousi velocity model, the coherence estimation using the amplitude spectra of the spectral variance as input shows more subtle discontinuities, especially in deeper layers. The results from field-data examples demonstrate that the proposed method is helpful for mapping faults and for improving the narrow channel edges' resolution of interest. Therefore, the coherence algorithm based on the spectral variance analysis may be conducive to the seismic interpretation.

Abstract:We address the exact recovery of the support of a k-sparse vector with Orthogonal Matching Pursuit (OMP) and Orthogonal Least Squares (OLS) in a noiseless setting. We consider the scenario where OMP/OLS have selected good atoms during the first l iterations (l<k) and derive a new sufficient and worst-case necessary condition for their success in k steps. Our result is based on the coherence \mu of the dictionary and relaxes Tropp's well-known condition \mu<1/(2k-1) to the case where OMP/OLS have a partial knowledge of the support.

Abstract:We study the coherence in time and space of electromagnetic fields propagated through complex media. Whether for localization, imaging or telecommunication, the development of dedicated numerical techniques is generally based on the exploitation of simplified models considering either coherent or diffuse fields. The optimization of such applications in conditions of partial coherence can therefore be particularly challenging, requiring the development of hybrid algorithms adaptable to prior knowledge on the processed fields. The objective of this work is to provide numerical techniques for decomposing an electromagnetic field into subspaces that can then be filtered according to their level of spatial and temporal coherence. In contrast to the studies carried out on space-space transfer matrices notably used for the calculation of Wigner-Smith operators, these decompositions are carried out on space-time matrices in order to facilitate the study of temporal dispersion. The theory is developed for illustrative purposes using experimental results from a leaky resonant system but seem to be applicable to any scattering and reverberating media capable of transforming localized and coherent excitations into complex and diffuse distributions. To conclude this work, the proposed technique is exploited to improve image reconstruction in a millimeter-wave computational imaging demonstration. In the studied context and from a more general perspective, we propose a technique to select the most suitable subspaces for each application operating under conditions of partial coherence, whether these correspond in the most extreme cases to ballistic paths or to diffuse fields.

Abstract:Quantum coherence is the most distinguished feature of quantum mechanics. It lies at the heart of the quantum-information technologies as the fundamental resource and is also related to other quantum resources, including entanglement. It plays a critical role in various fields, even in biology. Nevertheless, the rigorous and systematic resource-theoretic framework of coherence has just been developed recently, and several coherence measures are proposed. Experimentally, the usual method to measure coherence is to perform state tomography and use mathematical expressions. Here, we alternatively develop a method to measure coherence directly using its most essential behavior-the interference fringes. The ancilla states are mixed into the target state with various ratios, and the minimal ratio that makes the interference fringes of the "mixed state" vanish is taken as the quantity of coherence. We also use the witness observable to witness coherence, and the optimal witness constitutes another direct method to measure coherence. For comparison, we perform tomography and calculate l_{1} norm of coherence, which coincides with the results of the other two methods in our situation. Our methods are explicit and robust, providing a nice alternative to the tomographic technique.

Abstract:A sensor pixel integrates optical intensity across its extent, and we explore the role that this integration plays in phase space tomography. The literature is inconsistent in its treatment of this integration-some approaches model this integration explicitly, some approaches are ambiguous about whether this integration is taken into account, and still some approaches assume pixel values to be point samples of the optical intensity. We show that making a point-sample assumption results in apodization of and thus systematic error in the recovered ambiguity function, leading to underestimating the overall degree of coherence. We explore the severity of this effect using a Gaussian Schell-model source and discuss when this effect, as opposed to noise, is the dominant source of error in the retrieved state of coherence.

Abstract:Coherence analysis is a powerful tool in seismic interpretation for imaging geological discontinuities such as faults and fractures. However, subtle faults or fractures of one stratum are difficult to be distinguished on coherence sections (time slices or profiles) due to interferences from adjacent strata, especially these with strong reflectivity. In this paper, we propose a coherence enhancement method which applies local histogram specification (LHS) techniques to enhance subtle faults or fractures in the coherence cubes. Unlike the traditional histogram specification (HS) algorithm, our method processes 3D coherence data without discretization. This method partitions a coherence cube into many sub-blocks and self-adaptively specifies the target distribution in each block based on the whole distribution of the coherence cube. Furthermore, the neighboring blocks are partially overlapped to reduce the edge effect. Applications to real datasets show that the new method enhances the details of subtle faults and fractures noticeably.

Abstract:This article proposes a new higher-order-statistics-based coherence-estimation algorithm, which we denote as HOSC. Unlike the traditional crosscorrelation-based C1 coherence algorithm, which sequentially estimates correlation in the inline and crossline directions and uses their geometric mean as a coherence estimate at the analysis point, our method exploits three seismic traces simultaneously to calculate a 2D slice of their normalized fourth-order moment with one zero-lag correlation and then searches for the maximum correlation point on the 2D slice as the coherence estimate. To include more seismic traces in the coherence estimation, we introduce a supertrace technique that constructs a new data cube by rearranging several adjacent seismic traces into a single supertrace. Combining our supertrace technique with the C1 and HOSC algorithms, we obtain two efficient coherence-estimation algorithms, which we call ST-C1 and ST-HOSC. Application results on the real data set show that our algorithms are able to reveal more details about the structural and stratigraphic features than the traditional C1 algorithm, yet still preserve its computational efficiency.
