Abstract:Intercropping is a long-established grain production system with more than 28 million hectares sown annually in China, due to the effective utilization of arable land and resources. It plays a very important role in ensuring grain supply and enhancing farmers’ income (Li, et al., 2007). Maize/soybean intercropping system has been broadly adopted and has more than 100 d of co-growth causes intensive interspecific competition for radiation and water, etc. Radiation interceptions within the intercropped plants have been investigated with extensive field experiments or modeling with simplified canopy architecture (Tsubo and Walker, 2002; Awal et al., 2006). Functional-structural plant modeling (FSPM) is a very useful tool to study the radiation distribution within 3-D canopies.
