Abstract:With the increasing of Multimedia applications over Internet,TCP-friendly congestion control scheme for (multimedia) streaming becomes a hot spot.This mechanism based on RTP/RTCP protocol.Congestion stated is notified to the sender using ECN.RED queue management is used in the router.TCP-friendly rate adjustment algorithm is adopted in the end host.ECNBCC is TCP-friendly and can respond to early congestion of network to reduce the packet loss rate and delay.This mechanism can also be applied to congestion control of wireless multimedia streaming.

Abstract:With the increasing applications of real-time multimedia on Internet, an ECN-based TCP-friendly Congestion Control (ETCC) scheme was proposed, in which both end host and router were involved. RED was adopted in the router, and early congestion state was notified to the sender using ECN. Sending rate could be adjusted according to the rate scheme in the end host. The simulation showed that ETCC could adjust sending rate smoothly, decrease delay and packet loss ratio while maintaining good TCP-friendliness.

Abstract:This paper introduces a XCP framework based reliable multicast transport protocol XRMCCP (XCP framework based Reliable Multicast Congestion controlled protocol) that has been designed to be simple, scalable and reliable for high bandwidth-delay product (BDP) networks. We observe that TCP Friendly Throughput Equation (TFTE), which many current multicast transport protocols use to estimate available rates of multicast sessions, has limits of performance in high BDP networks. XRMCCP generalizes XCP framework to support one-to-many transport congestion control. The scalability issue is addressed with an exponential timers scheme that is also used to estimate the number of receivers involved in the communication. The paper presents a number of simulation results on its performance. Besides, some design choices are evaluated.

Abstract:In this paper we study the key issues of the real-time video transfer system when applying multicast technology.First we introduce an application-level high-performance multicast transport protocol RTMTP to offer guarantees of real-time and stable video transmission.Second,we improve the management of flow control by adding the component Video Repeater,avoiding the traditional way in which centralized and inflexible methods are applied.Third,packet forwarding is achieved through hierarchical service control of Repeaters.Finally,the implementation of a solution is issued and the performance of a sample system based on it is tested.

Abstract:The rapid growth of internet promotes evolution of network applications. As different network application has different set of requirements for network technology, many protocols have been developed. Most of these protocols overlap and are redundant in function, which result in lower performance. This paper presents an IPv6 QoS-based simple streaming transport protocol (SSTP), which aims at next generation networks and takes into account of the feature of the multimedia stream transmission. The protocol has been implemented and deployed in a multimedia stream playing system. This paper not only introduces the background and design methodology of SSTP, but also describes SSTP in detail. At last, this article compares the performance of SSTP and RTP/RTCP, and gives the consideration about. improvement of SSTP.

Abstract:Delivering real-time video over the Internet is an important component of many Internet multimedia applications. Transmission of real-time video has bandwidth, delay, and loss requirements. However the current Internet does not offer any quality of service (QoS) guarantees to video transmission over the Internet. In addition, the heterogeneity of the networks and end systems makes it difficult to multicast Internet video in an efficient and flexible way. Thus, designing protocols and mechanisms for Internet video transmission poses many challenges. In this paper, we take a holistic approach to these challenges and present solutions from both transport and compression perspectives. With the holistic approach, we design a framework for transporting real-time Internet video, which includes two components, namely, congestion control and error control. Specifically congestion control consists of rate control, rate-adaptive encoding, and rate shaping; error control consists of forward error correction (FEC), retransmission error resilience, and error concealment. For the design of each component in the framework, we classify approaches and summarize representative research work. We point out there exists a design space which can be explored by video application designers and suggest that the synergy of both transport and compression could provide good solutions.

Abstract:Stream synchronization is the key problem in real-time multimedia communication.Some present strategies for synchronization control are introduced,and a solution to synchronization control problem based on RTP/RTCP is designed and implemented.The process and algorithm of the audio-video synchronization are analyzed in detail.The solution is applied to VoIP,and satisfactory results are achieved.

Abstract:An architecture for real-time video transfer system named CRR is presented. In this architecture we design an application-level high-performance multicast protocol RTMTP, employing a logical timer and a smart packet-dropping method to offer guarantees of real-time video transmission. Second, we improve the management of flow control by adding a layered feedback-adjust mechanism, avoiding the traditional way in which centralized and inflexible methods are applied. Third, layered QoS and forwarding transparency are achieved through layered service control of repeaters. Finally, the implementation of CRR architecture is issued and the performance of a sample system based on it is tested.

Abstract:Design of the multimedia transport protocol in heterogeneous wired-cum-wireless environment faces great challenges because of two contradictory objectives. On the one hand, the multimedia application requires smooth transfer rate, i.e., stability objective; on the other hand, vertical handoff in heterogeneous networks requires fast response at transfer rate, i.e., flexibility objective. To address this problem, this paper proposes to use passive bandwidth measurement at the receiver in the design of rate control algorithm for multimedia transport protocol. Moreover, a window based exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) filter with two weights is introduced to achieve stability and flexibility at the same time. Based on these considerations, a multimedia transport protocol (MMTP) is proposed. Its stability and flexibility as well as its fairness are verified by simulations.

Abstract:Based on distributed coordination function (DCF) of IEEE 802.11, a new real-time wireless media access control (MAC) protocol in Ad hoc was proposed. This protocol divided the message into three kinds: non-periodic real-time, periodic real-time and non real-time. Through using different inter-frame space (IPS) to distinguish different information, the new MAC adapts RTS/CTS to transmit frames with different priorities, and real-time message suffers less delay. Simulation validates the proposed approach; the enhanced method reduces the delay of non real-time message to 0.0001 s.

Abstract:TFRC protocol is suitable for video transmission in a wire network, and quality assessment is also essential in a video transmission system. In this paper, a real-time video transmission system based on TFRC protocol is proposed, and the evaluation model about the system is improved in the framework of Evalvid. It assesses the quality and efficiency of the video transmission according to the actual video file, and analyzes losses frame in different video types during transmission as well as the video quality in receiver. The results of simulation experiment in NS-2 show that when real-time video transmitted in wire network environment using this system, the receiver can get satisfactory video quality by reason of the TFRC protocol friendliness and the smoothness of sending rate. Based on the characteristic of high error rate in wireless network, the novel TCP friendly congestion control algorithm TFRC-JI proposed in our previous work [1] was adopted, which introduces the latency vibration to distinguish the link congestion from code error, thus different speed control mechanism is feedback to the transmitting end. Simulation experiment results indicated that compared with the traditional TFRC, the TFRC-JI suites well for real-time service transmission.

Abstract:This paper addresses the resource allocation problem for multiple media streaming over the Internet. First, we present an end-to-end transport architecture for multimedia streaming over the Internet. Second, we propose a new multimedia streaming TCP-friendly protocol (MSTFP), which combines forward estimation of network conditions with information feedback control to optimally track the network conditions. Third, we propose a novel resource allocation scheme to adapt media rate to the estimated network bandwidth using each media's rate-distortion function under various network conditions. By dynamically allocating resources according to network status and media characteristics, we improve the end-to-end quality of services (QoS). Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed schemes

Abstract:Usually,the data of streaming media are transmitted through RTP/RTCP on UDP protocol,which performs poor on wireless network channel with high-error-rate and dramatic-fluctuated-bandwidth.A 2-TCP transmit mode and the performance of the 2-TCP is tested and analyzed.with separated TCP connections for RTSP and RTP is proposed.An efficient authorization protocol is designed,which is suitable for the popular distributed architecture of the streaming media server.The security and robustness of the authorization protocol are analyzed,and the performance of the 2-TCP is tested and analyzed.

Abstract:The current stability of the Internet depends on the end-to-end congestion control of TCP based on the Additive Increase Multiplicative Decrease (AIMD) algorithms. The current TCP congestion control is appropriate for applications such as bulk data transfer, but not for real-time applications as multimedia communications. Most of existing congestion control works are suitable for the best effort flows, but not for the flows with QoS requirements. In this paper, the congestion control issue of different classes of data flows in the Internet between sender and receiver is investigated. By adopting equation-based rate control (EBRC) for differentiated services instead of traditional TCP congestion control for best-effort service, a new congestion control mechanism for multimedia communications with QoS requirements can be achieved. A dynamic partial buffer sharing scheme (DPBS) for packet loss control and a method of calculating the packet loss rate by receiver are proposed. Finally, the system architecture of the new congestion control mechanism is described.

Abstract:The video quality in networked vision system is easily affected by the network congestion in the real-time video transmission process. When the machine vision network is congested, the video sending strategy must be adjusted to deal with changes in the network environment. To solve this problem, a rate control strategy based on RTCP control message is proposed. Experimental results show that this strategy can effectively reduce the packet loss rate of data during video transmission, adapt to network carrying capacity, and improve the transmission quality of real-time vision information.

Abstract:This paper proposes and investigates a protocol or real-time multicast applications called MSR. Two essential features in MSR are its traffic shaping and scalable retransmission schemes. To minimize packet loss and delay in the network, MSR spaces out the transmission of bursty data at the source. Reliability is further enhanced with a scheme in which the receivers make use of NAC messages to request for retransmission of packets from the sender. To avoid the well-known NACK is issued among a group of receivers. Unlike previous multicast protocols which attempt to achieve 100 percent reliability by requiring a correct copy of a packet to reach all receivers before the retransmission process stops, a key feature in our scheme is that the level of reliability can be scaled in accordance with the maximum tolerable end-to-end delay, defined as the difference between the instant at which the real-time data must be presented to the user and the instant at which it is created at the sender. MSR attempts to make optimal use of measured parameters such as delay, round-trip delay, loss rate, etc. to scale the retransmission process and provide single NACK mechanism. We adopt the framework of the standard RTP and RTCP for the implementation of MSR. This paper present a proof to show that the time-out mechanism in MSR, which is required to effect retransmission request, would work even if the clocks of the sender and receivers are not synchronized, a situation not uncommon in the Internet. Many multimedia streaming protocols currently used on the Web either uses a 100 percent reliable protocol like TCP or unreliable protocol like UDP. The former sacrifices the 'real-timeness' and the latter sacrifices the quality of the presentation. Our rough performance analysis indicates that there is perhaps a better intermediate solution using a scalable protocol like MSR.
