Abstract:A robust estimator, called simplified MF-estimator, to determine 3-D motion parameters is investigated in the paper. According to the Bayesian decision rule, it partitions a given data set into a subset containing good observations and a subset containing bad observations. The estimator can implement a least-squares estimator on the good data, and down-weight the outliers. To speed convergence of the algorithm, an annealing schedule is used. Finally, a great number of simulations are conducted to show robustness of this algorithm.

Abstract:Based on the center deviation characteristics of motion vector, we propose a fast searching strategy for motion estimation. It uses the direction and intensity information to choose the proper searching mode. The proposed method needn't any extra requirement of memory to save searching records. For the small memory consumption and fast searching strategy, the arithmetic can be used in wireless communications to resolve the limit of memory and meet the requirement of real-time processing.

Abstract:In mobile multimedia communications, there is a heavy demand for low computational complexity of video coding due to the limited mobile terminals’ processing power, battery life and memory capacity. Motion estimation is the most intensive computational process in video coding. It affects not only the encoder’s performance, but also the reconstructed video quality. In this paper, based on the analysis of the characteristics of error surface and motion vector field, we propose a fast search strategy for motion estimation is proposed. Simulation results show that compared with MVFAST, no any extra memory is required in the proposed algorithm, the computational complexity will decrease over 35% at the expense of only slight degraded image quality.

Abstract:H.264 adopts multiple reference frames for motion estimation. This now feature significantly improves the prediction accuracy of intercoding blocks, but it results in a considerable increase in encoder complexity. The reference software JM adopts the full search scheme of which the increased computation is in proportion to the number of searched reference frames. However the reduction of prediction residues is highly dependent on the nature of sequences, not on the number of searched frames. We propose a fast multiframe selection algorithm to deduct unnecessary reference frame searches, where the nearest reference frame (ref(0)) is first searched, and the motion vectors from ref(0) compose motion field distribution. Based on the spatial and temporal consistencies of the motion field, only a small number of MBs select multiframe motion estimation. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can reduce more than 50% motion estimation computation cost on average and still maintain similar coding efficiency. Abstract:A fast two-step search algorithm for half-pixel motion estimation is proposed based on the fact that the SAD distortion function increases monotonously as the search location moves away from the sub-pixel minimum within ± 1 pixel neighborhood of the result of integer-pixel search.Experimental results show that significant reduction in computation is achieved by using the propose method,without visible loss in video fidelity.

Comparing with the architecture of candidate blocks, this scheme not only enhances the throughput, but also simplifies the architecture of hardware greatly. Abstract:The block motion estimation is a very time consuming part in the H.264 video coding standard. Although many fast motion estimation algorithms have been proposed to reduce the huge calculation complexity instead of full search, the motion estimation time still can not satisfy the critical real-time application. This paper proposes a new fast motion estimation algorithm, which improves on the UMHexagonS algorithm. Firstly, the introduction of a new square pattern takes the place of the 5 x 5 spiral search to reduce the search point. Secondly, the multi-hexagon-grid search is replaced by a multi-octagon-gird search in order to reduce the computational complexity and effectively predict the optimal motion vector. Thirdly, by increasing the conditions and type of patterns, the proposed algorithm can adaptively adopt directional search patterns for different block types to accelerate the search speed. The simulation experimentation results show that the proposed algorithm can reduce 30%-40% of the computational complexity compared with the UMHexagonS algorithm without loss of its coding accuracy.

Abstract:In this paper,based on the study of the principles of simplified UMHexagonS algorithm,some improved ways are proposed,such as using a new way instead of selecting only one predictor in the init selection step used by other predictive motion estimation that in the init predictor selection step,all of the predictors are used for the next step as different center points of different predictive areas.Furthermore,we use different search patterns for different motion type and so on.Simulation results show that with similar or even better rate-distortion performance,the proposed method decreases about 10%-40% of search points and reduces motion estimation time by about 6% to 20% on average when compare with those of simplified UMHexagonS algorithm.

Abstract:H.264 codec allows seven block sizes to perform the motion compensation,and refers to several frames for searching the best motion vector to achieve lower bitrate and higher quality.Since the reference software uses the full search scheme to obtain the best performance,it will spend a lot of searching time.The motion vectors in near blocks and pints in same blocks between sequent frames are correlated.Considering this characteristics,this paper proposes efficient searching algorithms by extending famous DS algorithm to multiple reference frames.Experimental results show that such method can reduce the complexity considerably while maintaining similar PSNR and bit rate.

Abstract:Fractional pixel motion estimation is applied in H.264 to achieve more accurate motion vectors and higher compression efficiency. It, however, distinctly increased complexity in the procedure of motion estimation. In this paper, we propose an adaptive and fast fractional pixel search algorithm (AFFPS) to reduce the computation load of motion estimation in H.264. Since the sum of absolute difference (SAD) surface is unimodal within the range of ±1 pixel, it can be approximated by line functions in a small area around the optimum motion vector. A novel bypass strategy for fractional pixel search based on these line functions is first proposed to skip unnecessary fractional pixel search. Then, an all-zero block (AZB) detection-based strategy is proposed to terminate ineffective fractional pixel search early. The proposed fractional search algorithm is presented, which adopts the two strategies and greatly improves the center-biased fractional pixel search (CBFPS) method. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can reduce more than 71% of the fractional pixel search points and still maintain similar coding efficiency.

Abstract:The video coding standards H.264 have adopted Simplified UMHexagonS Algorithm as an Improved and Simplified Fast Motion Estimation Method for integer pel motion estimation.In this paper,based on the study of the principles of Simplified UMHexagonS algorithm,an improved method is proposed: First we check two kinds predictors,then search in different predictions domain,and after cross search which satisfy intensive search condition we add a converge judgement.Results show that the improved Simplified UMHexagonS algorithm can reduce search points and reconstructed quality compared with those of the origoinal Simplified UMHexagonS Algorithm.

Abstract:Motion estimation is one of the key technologies in inner-frame estimation encoding of video compression. In all kinds of compression standard, motion estimation based on block is used widely. But motion estimation often takes long time, so it influences compression performance bigly. The characteristics of video sequence and the existing fast search algorithms are analyzed, and then an improved fast search algorithm is brought forward. Experimental results show that this algorithm improves the compression performance.

Abstract:Variable size motion estimation with multiple reference frames has been adopted by the new video coding standard H.264. It can achieve significant coding efficiency compared to coding a macroblock (MB) in regular size with single reference frame. On the other hand, it causes high computational complexity of motion estimation at the encoder. Rate distortion optimized (RDO) decision is one powerful method to choose the best coding mode among all combinations of block sizes and reference frames, but it requires extremely high computation. In this paper, a fast inter mode decision is proposed to decide best prediction mode utilizing the spatial continuity of motion field, which is generated by motion vectors from 4times4 motion estimation. Motion continuity of each MB is decided based on the motion edge map detected by the Sobel operator. Based on the motion continuity of a MB, only a small number of block sizes are selected in motion estimation and RDO computation process. Simulation results show that our algorithm can save more than 50% computational complexity, with negligible loss of coding efficiency.

Abstract:Compared with H.264, the High Efficiency Video Coding standard has higher compression efficiency and better transmission performance, and will be used in wider field. TZ search method is adopted to perform integer pixel search in HEVC. Its performance is very perfect but very time-consuming. In this paper, we use hexagon search method in place of TZ search method to speed up motion estimation process. Simulation results show that this scheme accelerates 2-6 times and the performance loss is negligible in sequences with slow movements.

Abstract:In order to increase the H.264 encoder efficiency,three optimization methods for the UMHexagons based on deep research of the algorithm are proposed.Firstly,a new early termination(ET) threshold is introduced.Secondly,the hybrid search pattern in the coarse search step is partitioned and improved according to the direction characteristic of the motion vector,then various search patterns are used for different macro blocks in the next search step.All of the optimization not only reduce the complexity of the original algorithm but also save motion estimatiom time largely.The experiments with some standard video sequences of different types show that the improved algorithm can decrease approximately 17.93% motion estimation time compared with the UMHexagons,and cause little effect on the bitrate and picture quality.

Abstract:In this paper, a fast multi reference frame motion estimation algorithm is proposed to reduce the computational complexity for high efficiency video coding (HEVC). Firstly, according to the reference frame distribution, we define the motion complexity for a frame. Based on the motion complexity, an initial reference frame set (RFS) is constructed to reduce the number of the reference frame for motion estimation. Then for each prediction unit (PU), the average distortion per pixel together with the motion vector difference (MVD) in the first reference frame is employed to shrink the RFS in order to early terminate the motion estimation process. In addition, to enhance the robustness of the proposed scheme, an expansion method for RFS is proposed to guarantee the video quality. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed scheme can significantly save the encoding time. For Low Delay testing configuration, over 30% of time saving can be achieved on average with ignorable performance loss.
Direction-Field Based Fast Block Matching Motion Estimation Technology

Abstract:In a video encoder, the most time-consuming component is the motion estimation (ME) algorithm. To reduce the computational complexity of the ME algorithm, a direction field based fast search algorithm is proposed. The search range was reduced by using the previous motion vector (MV) information. The search times were also decreased by adding the initial predictor MV candidate. Thus, a large number of searching points are skipped according to the information of current direction field. The experimental results demonstrate that the performance of the proposed algorithm is comparable with the other algorithms such as FS, APDZS, MVFAST, and PMVFAST, in terms of both PSNR-Y and bit stream length, with less searching computational complexity.

Abstract:This paper gives out a fast motion estimation algorithm for H.264/AVC, which has almost the same quality performance as that of the Full Search scheme and also provides a strategy to balance the quality performance and the search speed. Integer-pel search is the most time consuming module for motion estimation. In this paper a hybrid Unsymmetrical-cross Multi-hexagon-grid Search (UMHexagonS) algorithm is introduced, which well solves the false motion vector estimation problem because of the local-minimum. As results, it saves more than 90% on search time whereas the averaging PSNR loss is less than 0.056dB for all tested sequences with different motion extent compared with the Fast Full Search scheme. Fractional-pel fast search is not negligible when the integer motion estimation has been extensively speeded up. By utilizing the property of uni-modal error surface inside the fractional-pel search window, a novel Center Biased Fractional-pel Search (CBFPS) algorithm is proposed in this paper, which can save 30–50% computation compared with the Full Fractional-pel Search scheme. Early termination is another problem discussed in this paper, to construct a complete motion estimation method, giving a uniform method which can cover a wide range of applications, terminating the program at early and right stage is certainly required. A model based on the Normative SAD Difference (NSD) is given to assist the termination decision-making, and a tradeoff between the search speed and the reconstructed quality can be achieved by changing a modulation factor.

Abstract:The video coding standards H.264 have adopted Unsymmetrical cross Multi Hexagon grid Search (UMHexagonS) algorithm for integer pels motion estimation.UMHexagonS algorithm shows very good capability in keeping the rate distortion performance,as well as a great computation reduction up to 90% compared to Fast Full Search can be achieved.However,further investigation on fast motion estimation method is still necessary.In this paper,based on the study of the principles of the UMHexagonS algorithm,an improved method is proposed,in which the idea of a new adaptive factor is introduced in initial search point prediction step for early termination.Simulation Results show that the improved UMHexagonS algorithm can averagely reduce more than 10% of search points with minimal loss in bitrate and reconstructed quality compared with those of the original UMHexagonS algorithm.
